"Ned" Snowden: Hedge-Levellers, Frame-Breakers and Whistleblowers
by Tom Walker 25 Jun '13

25 Jun '13

In a comment<http://www.juancole.com/2013/06/government-whistleblower-snowden.html#comme…> a couple of weeks ago at Juan Cole's *Informed Comment* blog, Warren Lunsford called Edward Snowden a "Luddite": In this Snowden disclosures it appears we are finding standard Marketing Science applied to National Security and Federal Criminal Investigations of Enemies of our County. I would think Snowden is a Luddite. Just as a group of early 19th century English workmen destroyed laborsaving machinery as a protest, we find Snowden attempting the same activity against the application of Modern Technology for National Security. Lunsford was right but for the wrong reasons. There is indeed an important parallel between Snowden's actions and the frame-breaking of the Luddites (as well as the hedge-levelling of the commoners resisting enclosure). But Lunsford got his chronology backward. The enclosures of the commons and the mechanization of industry were usurpations that disrupted long established regimes of property and legality. The real innovation here was the *criminalization* of protest against actions that previously would have themselves been regarded as violations. The law doth punish man or woman That steals the goose from off the common, But lets the greater felon loose That steals the common from the goose. Nicholas Blomley (2007)<http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=94…> wrote about "the consequential and often contradictory role of material objects in producing enclosure" emphasizing "the important work that hedges did, physically, symbolically and legally, in the dispossession of the commoner." I would argue, as did Marx, of course, that machinery performs a similar function of physical, symbolic and legal dispossession of labor power from the worker as does information technology dispossess citizens of their privacy. This is not to say that machines or IT, any more than hedges, are *culpable* for the dispossession. That would be to reduce them to their physical aspect alone. Rather it is the interaction of this physical aspect with its symbolic and legal interpretations that resulted and results in dispossession. -- Cheers, Tom Walker (Sandwichman)

Fwd: Homegrown Cities project

thanks for supporting the project below!! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Matias // URBZ <matias(a)urbz.net> Date: Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 7:47 PM Subject: Homegrown Cities project To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net, Nikos Salingaros <salingar(a)gmail.com> Cc: rahul srivastava <rahul(a)urbanology.org>, arnould(a)urbz.net Dear Michel and Nikos, We hope this mail finds you well. We are reaching out to you today because we just launched a crowd-funded project and need your help spreading the word, through your email list and social networks. We are proposing a new model for "slum rehabilitation" in Mumbai. The idea is to build on, and enhance existing construction practices in slum-notified areas. In contrast with wholesale redevelopment projects, which dominate the field, we believe that the "solution" is much closer to the "problem" than policy-makers and urban planners seem to imagine. We want to demonstrate that it is possible to collaborate with local masons, craftsmen and residents, and add value to their work, by opening venues with collaboration with architects, engineers and material producers. Our starting point is a pilot project in a slum-notified area in Mumbai. We will build a fantastic small house and sell it at the price of any other houses in the neighbourhood. And then we will get the ball rolling, repeating the scheme in the initial area and others. The long-term goal is to create housing cooperatives that bring together the people who have benefited from the scheme. These will become agents in the development and improvement of neighbourhood-wide infrastructure and amenities. We have written about the project on urbz.net<http://urbz.net/the-homegrown-cities-project/>, created a support page on facebook<https://www.facebook.com/HomegrownCities>and opened a crowd-funding page on indiegogo <http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/homegrown-cities>. The service, which is apparently closely integrated with Google+, is said to be in private beta testing within Google right now. According to Chitu, the service also allows you to catalog your belongings, review them (which could be cool for purchases) and send requests to borrow stuff from friends. There also seems to be something akin to a wish list and a feature that will allow you to share a list of items you don’t want to share but just want to give away. All of this sharing, of course, happens on Google+. [image: google_mine]<http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/google_mine.png> The service, the report says, is available on the web and through an Android app. The app also supposedly includes a 3D viewer that’ll show you your objects, though it’s not clear how you would get these models into the app. Google is obviously not the only company interested in this kind of real-world tracking. Mine <http://getmine.com/>, a startup that launched last December<http://techcrunch.com/2012/12/10/blippy-redux-mine-launches-a-service-for-s…> and that probably doesn’t have the exact same name by coincidence, is also working on giving its users the ability to track the things they own, but with a focus on what they’ve bought online. This service, though, seems to be more focused on e-commerce than on the sharing economy. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

It includes both the embedded subtitled video from OuIshare’s Youtube channel and our translation of the mini essay that Michel wrote on the subject for the ECC website<http://commonsandeconomics.org/2013/05/25/four-scenarios-for-the-collaborat…> . AFL-CIO "What Do I Think?"
by Tom Walker 20 Jun '13

20 Jun '13

I received a bulk email today from the AFL-CIO advertising their online discussion site in preparation for a September AFL-CIO convention. The moderator for today's discussion was former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and the theme question was: "The rich keep getting a bigger share of the economic pie while everyone else’s share keeps shrinking. What should be done to reverse this trend?" http://www.aflcio.org/About/Exec-Council/Conventions/2013/Discussion-Page#q… My suggestion was "Stop growing "the pie." Restore the commons instead." I added a reply linking to my elaboration of the concept of "labour power as a common pool resource": http://commonsandeconomics.org/groups/stream-2-labor-and-care/forum/topic/l… Bob Reich replied to my comment: > They go together. Economic growth doesn't have to result in more > consumption of material goods. It can also result in a better environment, > better public health, better education. All growth does is create the > economic capacity to do these things. How we use growth -- either for more > consumer goods of for more public goods (the commons) is a political choice. To which I replied: > There is a very large literature that disagrees with that assumption, Bob. > A good place to start would be with Jonathan Rowe's "Our Common Wealth" or > the 1995 Atlantic Magazine article on the GDP Jonathan co-authored. Also > the commons is not just another term for public goods. See Elinor Ostrom's > Nobel Prize winning work on the commons. I suppose it's a step in the right direction that the AFL-CIO *says,* "It’s time we started hearing from YOU. Join the conversation online and tell us what you really think about the future of the labor movement. We’ll use your ideas to shape our agenda for the convention." But judging from Bob Reich's reflex reply to my comment, I have to be skeptical about the extent to which ideas deviating from the conventional wisdom will shape the AFL-CIO agenda -- Cheers, Tom Walker (Sandwichman)
