Fw: Steiner & Keynes - Brothers in World Economy. Associate! June 2012

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Associative Economics Bulletin <ame(a)cfae.biz> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Tuesday, 5 June 2012, 21:37 Subject: Steiner & Keynes - Brothers in World Economy. Associate! June 2012 Is this email not displaying correctly? Click here to view in your browser. 05 Jun, 2012 16:55 Age: 17 min Steiner & Keynes - Brothers in World Economy. Associate! June 2012 Download sample page below In this issue we undertake an ambitious theme: the idea that Rudolf Steiner and John Maynard Keynes are brothers in the building of a world economy. Since they never met, this may be a bit of a stretch. But they were surely known to one another. Admittedly, Rudolf Steiner’s ideas have scarcely found the kind of fame, let alone favour, enjoyed by Keynes, largely consequent on the refusal of Steiner’s ideas at the end of WW1. (Not that Keynes’s were any more welcome at that moment!) It may be fanciful, therefore, to habilitate Steiner via Keynes. And yet maybe not. Keynes was guided by some sense for world economy that he could not perhaps define and might even refuse. Nevertheless, we propose the ‘story’ makes sense and warrants rehearsing, which we do in these pages. In the first piece we look not at the practical aspect of Steiner’s image of world economy – that being the regular content of this journal ever since its beginning in May 1980 (Happy Birthday!). We look instead at Steiner’s understanding of how economic life came into being. A Sign of Our Time reprises a theme covered several times in these pages over the years: Keynes, the Intuitive Hero. ‘Hero’ in the sense of an individual of significant stature, whose originality of thought also informed many practical aspects of modern economic life. The piece on Keynes, Newton and Joan of Arc aims to show that western finance is not all about negative materialism, and that English economists are not all caught in the ‘ultimate abstractions’ of which Steiner is so critical. Arthur Edwards’s essay shows that Keynes’ approach – an approach we are all capable of – spans from insight to serious financial practice. This month’s AEX Pages provide a Keynes-Schumacher update and raise questions concerning the term ‘threefolding’. Aptly, Accounting Corner completes the issue with a piece on Global Limits. Fw: [MacroScan] What's New on Macroscan (May 1, 2012 to May 31, 2012)
by robert searle 01 Jun '12

01 Jun '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: E R F <erf(a)vsnl.com> To: MacroScan Mailing List <macroscan(a)lists.riseup.net> Sent: Friday, 1 June 2012, 14:21 Subject: [MacroScan] What's New on Macroscan (May 1, 2012 to May 31, 2012) What's New on Macroscan (May 1, 2012 to May 31, 2012) www.macroscan.org or www.macroscan.net CURRENT ISSUES ILO Leadership Election Must Not be Another Charade May 21st 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar The ILO is uniquely positioned among the multilateral organisations to play an extremely significant role in forging a global consensus around viable alternative economic trajectories. The election of a developing country candidate as its new Director-General would have important consequences that go beyond symbolism. Time to End the Madness May 16th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar Irrational insistence on fiscal conservatism has led to widespread growth slowdown not only in the European countries, but also in emerging economies like China and India. The political backlash in major eurozone economies rekindles hope that governments embracing growth stunting fiscal tightening would soon switch back to sound economic policy-making. Is a Universal Pension Scheme Feasible in India? May 16th 2012, Jayati Ghosh In an economy like ours, a universal pension scheme must be part of a broader development strategy that focuses on public investment in physical and social infrastructure, which will ensure supply of necessary goods and services while increasing demand from the population in a stable and inclusive way. The Roaring 2000s May 11th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar The coincidence of the profit and the output booms during the two post-liberalisation booms in India's organised manufacturing sector since the early 1990s suggests that in periods of rising demand, the organised manufacturing sector in India has been a major beneficiary of reform through a rise in mark up. The complaints of the leaders of this sector are therefore not to be taken too seriously. For a Universal Old-age Pension Scheme May 10th 2012, Prabhat Patnaik The basic argument behind the demand for a universal, non-means-related, non-contributory pension scheme is derivable from the rights-based approach and stands unimpaired. For raising the resources necessary for such a publicly-funded pension scheme, tax proposals similar to those in international discussions can be worked out for India as well. Paralysis in Policy Assessment May 8th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar The kind of policy paralysis that the UPA government is identified with refers to the failure of the government to deliver fully on its commitment to so-called economic reform. But the true paralysis lies in its inability to address deprivation by allocating additional resources and improving delivery to accelerate advance on the human development front. A Communist's Life under Capitalism May 8th 2012, Prabhat Patnaik The contradictions confronting the personal life of a Communist activist having to work within a capitalist society have not attracted much classical Marxist theorizing. But the question of how a communist living under capitalism must both engage in quotidian life and yet be outside of it needs to be addressed for the formulation of an appropriate Communist praxis in today's world. The Continuing Need for Industrial Policy May 7th 2012, Jayati Ghosh The 13th UNCTAD conference held recently in Qatar discussed industrial policies as the significant yet unsung force behind the much trumpeted emergence of some developing economies as major players in the global stage. Despite liberalisation in the '90s, much of India's success too lies in the industrial policies that preceded it. Moreover, India has much to learn from its counterparts like Brazil on how to utilise industrial policies even in largely market-driven economies. FEATURES Of Profits and Growth May 29th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar and Jayati Ghosh The period between 2002-03 and 2008-09 saw India's economy grow at an unprecedented rate, with manufacturing too witnessing a revival. However, the rate of growth of the manufacturing sector would be reduced due to the effects of the recent developments of reduction and even reversal of foreign capital inflows, the liquidity crunch and the large scale corruption in India. Growing Differences in State Per Capita Incomes May 15th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar and Jayati Ghosh The period of economic liberalisation has been marked by growing differences in per capita incomes across states, although the trend has varied across decades. In this article, the authors examine the evidence on per capita Net Domestic Product at the state level since 1980, and consider some possible explanations for the observed trends. WEB RESOURCES Review of Agrarian Studies (RAS) May 28th 2012 The Review of Agrarian Studies is the peer-reviewed journal of the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (www.agrarianstudies.org) a charitable trust based in India and established in 2003. The major objectives of the Foundation are to facilitate and sponsor multi-disciplinary theoretical and empirical enquiry in the field of agrarian studies in India and elsewhere in less-developed countries. The Foundation does so in association with a wide section of people interested in the agrarian question, including persons associated with academic institutions, social and political activists, members of mass organizations working in the countryside, and other professionals and scholars. Fw: A million strong.
by robert searle 01 Jun '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Will Bates - 350.org <organizers(a)350.org> To: robert searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, 31 May 2012, 19:38 Subject: A million strong. Dear friends, This is huge. Two weeks ago we joined a diverse coalition to launch an all-out offensive to end fossil fuel subsidies, and we weren't quite sure how it would turn out. Well, we've currently got 958,422 signatures on our combined global petition -- almost a million people strong! Will you help us get to a million by the end of the week? Sign on here: www.350.org/rio Once we get a million signatures, we'll move on to phase two: a surround-sound campaign to put the pressure on world leaders at the G20 Summit in Mexico and at the "Rio+20 Earth Summit" coming up in Brazil. We'll be honest: we won't win the campaign to end fossil fuel subsidies with a petition alone -- and we won't be able to wrap this up by the end of the Rio Earth Summit. But being a million strong is a powerful starting point, and our massive numbers will send an unignorable message to world leaders. The truth is that ending these subsidies will take an ongoing and escalating campaign -- which is why we're digging deep on multiple fronts. As I type this, 350.org staff and volunteers are putting together a cutting-edge social media plan, planning a series of hard-hitting actions in countries around the world, and working on game-changing research that will expose just how massive the issue of subsidies is. Our work on subsidies will continue in the weeks and months ahead -- but with the global summits in Mexico and Rio happening in just a few weeks, we have a unique moment to shine a light on a topic that all too often gets hidden and ignored. And we can't ignore it any longer -- the issue of subsidies is just too important. New research shows that getting rid of fossil fuel subsidies would lead to massive reductions in the emissions that are super-heating our planet -- and could help level the economic playing field and trigger a clean energy revolution around the world. One more thing: we’re saving June 18 for something special. It'll be the day when we’ll deliver our collective petition to world leaders, but also a day where we’ll try something a bit different -- and a day to take our message to the halls of power in a brand new way. We'll keep you posted on the next steps, but for now please help us reach the 1 million mark before the week is up: www.350.org/rio. Here's a quick run-down of some of the projects that are currently in our pipeline (pardon the pun):In July, our new Resilience website will beta launch. This site will build upon the depth of daily information and insight found at energybulletin.net to provide visitors with concrete resources and connections to local groups that are doing the hard work of building food, energy, and economic resilience. In the coming weeks we'll reach out to ask YOU for the groups and projects that most inspire you.In August, our second Community Resilience Guide —Power from the People — will be published. Written by Greg Pahl, with a foreword by Van Jones, Power from the People explores how homeowners, co-ops, nonprofit institutions, governments, and businesses are putting power in the hands of local communities through distributed energy programs and energy-efficiency measures. In September, we'll publish "Drill, Baby, Drill?" — another landmark report by PCI Fellow David Hughes — that will take a critical look at all unconventional oil and gas resources, and the claims that the US is embarking on a new golden age of domestic energy security. The report will be accompanied by an animated video that pokes holes (and fun) at the fossil fuel industry's claims about the abundance and benefits of this extreme energy. Senior Fellow Richard Heinberg and team are currently working on a script idea that will remind Simpsons fans of Troy McClure. In October, we'll launch our Energy Reality Campaign — a multi-prong initiative to increase energy literacy among environmental activists and the general public, and promote energy conservation as a primary strategy to respond to what Michael Klare calls "the Age of Extreme Energy". The centerpiece of the campaign will be a stunning photo & essay book PCI is publishing in partnership with the Foundation for Deep Ecology. The campaign will include a great many creative surprises and ways for you to get involved. So stay tuned. Each of these projects is a labor of love, passion, and urgency. They also rely heavily on our great partners and supporters — including every one of you who sends us financial support, offers constructive criticism and positive feedback, takes action in your own community, and helps spread the word.In solidarity, Asher MillerExecutive Director READ A LONGER VERSION OF THIS NEWSLETTER ONLINE ________________________________ latest publications Read, watch or listen to the latest content by our Fellows, Board, Advisers and Staff anytime on our website. Fw: I cannot watch another child killed in Syria
by robert searle 01 Jun '12

01 Jun '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Alice Jay - Avaaz.org <avaaz(a)avaaz.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, 31 May 2012, 21:32 Subject: I cannot watch another child killed in Syria Dear friends, This picture shows the bloodied bodies of dozens of innocent children, brutally murdered by the Syrian regime. As a parent, these images are almost unbearable, but I know we must not look away -- and that we can help end this slaughter. Our governments are deciding what to do right now. But they will settle for hand wringing diplomacy unless we demand firm action. Sign the urgent petition to send in thousands of UN monitors to protect the Syrian people in every region now: The pictures from Al Houla, Syria, last Friday are almost too brutal to look at. I have a 5 year old daughter and I know it's only luck of birth that separates her from this horror. But my shock led me to write this today as I know there is something we can all do together to stop this. Dozens of children lie covered with blood, their faces show the fear they felt before death, and their innocent lifeless bodies reveal an unspeakable massacre. These children were slaughtered by men under strict orders to sow terror. Yet all the diplomats have come up with so far is a few UN monitors 'observing' the violence. Now, governments across the world are expelling Syrian ambassadors, but unless we demand strong action on the ground, they will settle for these diplomatic half-measures. The UN is discussing what to do right now. If there were a large international presence across Syria with a mandate to protect civilians, we could prevent the worst massacres while leaders engage in political efforts to resolve the conflict. I cannot see more images like these without shouting from the rooftops. But to stop the violence, it is going to take all of us, with one voice, demanding protection for these kids and their families. Click to call for UN action now and send this to everyone: http://www.avaaz.org/en/syria_will_the_world_look_away_c/?vlA child's death is tragic in any circumstance. The UN says 108 people were killed in the onslaught, 49 of them children under the age of 10, and the youngest was a 2 year old girl. 90% of the population of Al Houla has now fled their homes. As I put my daughter to bed last night, I tried to consider what the mothers and fathers and grandparents of these children feel. The sheer pain and desperation is unimaginable, but there will also be deep anger and hate for those that did this. Until all of us stop these attacks on the people of Syria, the cycle of violence will not end. Let's not forget -- this bloodbath began over a year ago with thousands of people peacefully protesting on the streets -- calling, like their brothers and sisters across the region, for freedom and democracy. But the regime responded with brutality and violence -- murdering, torturing, abducting and laying siege to entire cities. The international community did not intervene, letting geopolitical concerns obstruct our responsibility to protect. Then, in desperation to protect their families and fight back against the repression, some took up arms. Now it is an armed conflict -- and if the world continues to do nothing it will become a full blown sectarian war that may last for generations and breed the kind of terrorist attacks we have yet to imagine in our worst nightmares. When dozens of children are murdered in cold blood by the army and their militias -- it is time for serious action. Assad, his henchmen and his murderous army must be held to account and the people of Syria protected. Nothing the international community has done yet has pried Assad from his murderous grip on power. The few UN monitors on the ground were powerless to stop the Al Houla killings -- they only served to count the tiny bodies. But if we sent in hundreds of monitors to each of the fourteen regions of Syria, Assad's assassins would think twice. The world looked away with Srebrenica, and with Rwanda. If all of us respond today -- we can make sure that these children's tragic deaths act as the tipping point for all of us everywhere to say NO MORE! But if we turn away, so will our leaders. Let's join voices from every corner of the earth and make it impossible for our leaders to ignore our cry. In respect for these dear children and their families, click to join the global call to demand a massive UN presence on the ground now! http://www.avaaz.org/en/syria_will_the_world_look_away_c/?vlThe Avaaz community has stood with the people of Syria for fifteen months, denouncing the Syrian regime, calling for sanctions, supporting communities across the country with aid, and giving equipment to citizen journalists to get the word out about the violence. Let's today make the Al Houla massacre the watershed moment for change and insist that our governments no longer stand by shaking their heads and turning their backs.
