Fw: Government snooping: David Davis MP on Tuesday

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Marie Campbell - 38 Degrees <action(a)38degrees.org.uk> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Friday, 8 June 2012, 13:12 Subject: Government snooping: David Davis MP on Tuesday Dear friend, Our right to privacy is under threat. The government has confirmed it wants new powers to snoop on all of us whenever we use the internet. Soon they’ll start pushing the plans through Parliament. [1] We can stop these Big Brother plans - if enough MPs feel enough pressure to vote against them. So now’s the time to get clued up. We need to work out how to persuade every MP to vote to protect our privacy. David Davis MP is a senior Conservative, a former shadow Home Secretary and a long-time supporter of civil liberties. He’s hugely opposed to the government’s plans. He’s agreed to hold an online question and answer session with 38 Degrees members. It’s a chance to hear more about the snooping plan and how we can stop it. The live internet briefing will take place on Tuesday 12th June at 7pm. You can take part from in front of your computer, all you’ll need is an internet connection. Click to reserve your place and get instructions on how to join in: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/David-Davis-live-briefing If we’re trying to persuade MPs, where better to get insider knowledge than direct from an MP? And David Davis isn’t just any MP – he’s a prominent Conservative and a former minister. [2] He’s been on the receiving end of many 38 Degrees campaigns before. He'll be able to tell us what works and how to best respond to government spin. David Cameron claims his new plans to invade our privacy will make us safer. But really this is about Big Brother powers to spy on all of us, not just serious criminals. It’s the difference between treating all of us as citizens, and treating us as suspects. [3] 38 Degrees members know better than anyone that the internet can be a force for good. It would be a disaster if the government got more powers to spy on it. So let's come together on the internet next week and prepare to stand up for our privacy online. Click here to reserve your place and get instructions on how to join: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/David-Davis-live-briefing Thanks for being involved, Marie, David, Becky, Hannah, James, Cian, Belinda and the 38 Degrees team PS: 38 Degrees members and David Davis MP probably wouldn't agree about absolutely everything. But 38 Degrees works with politicians of any stripe or party where they agree with our campaign aims. On the question of internet privacy, David Davis is on our side – so please join in next Tuesday and hear what he has to say: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/David-Davis-live-briefing NOTES [1] Draft Communications Bill paper issued by government: http://www.dehavilland.co.uk/PoliticalUploads/Draft_Communications_Data_Bil… Telegraph: Queen's Speech 'Surveillance of the entire nation' http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/9255201/Queens-Speech-… [2] Wikipedia page for David Davis MP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Davis_%28British_politician%29 [3] Liberty briefing on the new snooping plans http://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/campaigns/no-snoopers-charter/no-sno… Unsubscribe: If you no longer wish to be part of our movement and receive our emails you can unsubscribe here. Steve Keen ..Why Economics is Bunk..
by robert searle 09 Jun '12

120605 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01j5h51/Analysis_Steve_Keen_Why_Econo… The above is the link to the BBC IPlayer recording of yesterday’s discussion at the London School of Economics with Steve Keen. I think everyone will be delighted with his performance as he put our views across very effectively. I was not clear about the exact mechanics of his positive proposals. There seems to be a recognisable similarity with Major Douglas’s proposal which, although based on a mistaken analysis, would have, I think, succeeded in ameliorating the deflation of the 1930s, but there is now another factor which did not matter much then, the colossal gross savings rate. This needs to be taken into account in one’s model of the economy. Low interest rates exaggerate the actuarial value of pension fund liabilities, and pension funds seek more injections of savings into the pension schemes to compensate. As I have already reported recently Barclays put an additional amount into their schemes which raised the total by over ten per cent. The other 90 per cent had taken 60 years to accumulate. Steve revealed very forcefully the woeful state of Britain’s debt burden, using figures which compliment those I used in my recent review in ‘British and Overseas’ of Tim Congdon’s new book. Steve dates his concern to 2005. I suspect the rest of us cannot remember when we first challenged orthodoxy, it was so long ago. However though he may rate to us as a beginner, he is a very, very welcome one. His success shows he may have that something extra, a skill in putting the points across clearly and concisely. May be it helps to be Australian. Geoff

Fw: [gang8] Fwd: The Soros view of the euro - Comments

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: G W Gardiner <geoffrey.gardiner(a)btinternet.com> To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, 8 June 2012, 18:09 Subject: Re: [gang8] Fwd: The Soros view of the euro - Comments My recollection is that post 1945 the British government banned borrowing for the purchase of financial assets and the ban was removed very slowly until Thatcher had a clean sweep of controls. I remember being worried that she was making a repeat of 1929 possible. In the fifties some of the bank managers I knew, who had got their posts during the war when 80 per cent of bank lending was to the government, were happy to let things continue that way. As it always the case, both extremes are bad. Geoff From: Gunnar Tomasson Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2012 4:02 PM To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [gang8] Fwd: The Soros view of the euro - Comments I agree, Michael. The system-wide equality between assets and liabilities is one thing. From a policy point of view, there are two key points. 1. Ensure that the system-wide ratio between financial and non-financial components do not grow to a point where it threatens system-wide stability. In my Icelandic presentation in 1982, I likened it to the ratio between a ship’s superstructure and the ship itself. Excessive growth of the superstructure will at some point overturn the ship. 2. Establish and enforce a Glass-Steagall-like firewall between provision of financial services to the financial and non-financial sectors. Institutions can become too-big-to-fail only if the non-financial sector is hostage to the uncertain financial investment/speculative outcomes. There will always be investment/speculative outcomes which threaten to bankrupt financial institutions. To bail them out without re-installing a Glass-Steagall-like firewall is to set the stage for an encore down the road. Fw: [Radical Economics] May, 2012, Employment Numbers

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Donald Vreeland <dutchvreeland(a)yahoo.com> To: Donald Vreeland <dutchvreeland(a)yahoo.com> Sent: Wednesday, 6 June 2012, 23:21 Subject: [Radical Economics] May, 2012, Employment Numbers The website www.bls.gov released the May, 2012 U. S. employment numbers on 1 June, 2012. I directly quote the numbers in my website and then comment. Note that over 41% of the employable U. S. population is not working, not 8.3% of the official rate or about 17% more inclusive unemployment rate (unverifiable). Furthermore, the number of full time workers could increase byover 114% which in real numbers is over 128 million people idle or working part time.Full time positions declined by 533,000. Also only 36.2% of the whole population work full time and about 1/5th of all workers are part time. This notes tremendous slack in U. S. economy. Further, I include the changes from the last post of this site. www.bls.gov For those who haven't read it, the sections "Further Discussions" are short works of only a few paragraphs. http://explode.freeshell.org.html My main economic reform treatise is: http://explode.freeshell.org/econ.html It scares me to claim that I've solved poverty with the reform - sounds too arrogant to say (that). Read my site and decide. Regards, dv. Fw: Why We Need Robin: 71% of people think banks not paying fair share

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Robin Hood Tax Campaign <donotreply(a)robinhoodtax.org.uk> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Friday, 8 June 2012, 11:33 Subject: Why We Need Robin: 71% of people think banks not paying fair share Dear Supporter, Want to know what momentum looks like? Then take a look at how much has happened with the Robin Hood Tax lately – and register today for our campaign training sessions in London and Manchester. * Support from the UK public is at an all-time high. More than 70% of people think the banks aren't paying their fair share and that the Coalition isn’t doing enough to prove ‘We’re all in this together’. And more than two-thirds of people think the financial sector’s funding of the Tories affects Government policy. A Robin Hood Tax would ensure the banks contribute billions for a fairer world. * More than 4,000 of you have contacted your MPs in the past two months. That’s just incredible – and means this brilliant idea is becoming impossible to ignore. * Thousands of nurses in the US recently marched in support of a Robin Hood Tax. These heroic healthcare workers used the build-up to the Chicago G8 Summit to call for a Robin Hood Tax to ‘heal America’. * Experts from the UN called on European leaders to introduce a Robin Hood Tax – and the Scottish and Welsh First Ministers are on board too. All because of pressure from people like you. * The campaign is now active in more than 30 countries. You’re fighting for justice from Mexico to Malawi, and a new US campaign is launching soon too. * A new report suggests a Robin Hood Tax could boost growth in Europe. So that’s another of our critics’ complaints discredited, then. * And we’ve been making ourselves heard at the RBS and Barclays AGMs. Our message? Time for the banks to pay their fair share.Things are hotting up, and June is going to be busy. World leaders are getting together in Europe, Mexico and Brazil to discuss the tax. We’ll be making your voices heard at all three meetings. In the meantime, register today to join our campaign training sessions in London and Manchester. You really can help us turn this brilliant idea into a brilliant reality, The Robin Hood Tax team. PS. We’d love to know whether the campaign is working for you. Please fill in this short survey and let us know how we’re doing. Copyright © 2010 The Robin Hood Tax Click here to unsubscribe from Robin Hood Tax updates

Fw: Stop Syria's death dealer
by robert searle 08 Jun '12

08 Jun '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Alice Jay - Avaaz.org <avaaz(a)avaaz.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Friday, 8 June 2012, 1:20 Subject: Stop Syria's death dealer Avaaz.org - The World in Action Dear friends, Today another 27 children's bodies were found massacred in Syria. India and the US can cut off the arms supply to Syria's brutal regime by threatening to boycott Syria’s main weapons supplier, Russian arms company Rosoboronexport. This financial pressure could end the massacres. Sign the petition now to stop Russia’s deadly supply to Syria! Today another 27 children's bodies were found massacred in Syria. To stop this horror, we need to cut off the flow of arms to the regime. There is one way to do it, but it's going to take all of us working together to make it happen. Here’s how: India and the US are key clients to Syria’s main weapons supplier -- the state-owned Russian company Rosoboronexport. If we can get the two countries to threaten to halt all deals unless the Russians stop supporting Syria's murder machine, the arms dealers could be forced to stop their Syria sales. Both the US and India want to stop the violence in Syria, but diplomacy is failing. This is their best chance -- let's give them a massive mandate to act. The US has already persuaded the company to stop light weapons sales to Syria. Now if we can build up the pressure on India and get both countries to speak out, Rosoboronexport could be forced to cut Syria's arms supply completely. Click here to sign the urgent petition to stop dealing death to Syria and tell everyone -- our call will be delivered to both countries and Rosoboronexport at a massive arms fair in Paris in 3 days: http://www.avaaz.org/en/us_and_india_stop_syrias_merchants_of_death/?vl International political solutions are failing to stop the bloodshed in Syria -- just last week the world was stunned by the brutal al Houla massacre where 49 children were executed, and today there is another mass killing. Why? Assad is protected by his old friend Russia, which has blocked international action while profiting in arms sales -- Rosoboronexport is Russia's biggest arms dealer, bringing the government billions in revenue per year. President Assad is only clinging to power through military might and sowing fear. If we can convince Russia that supporting the Syrian regime is not worth it, and end arms sales to Assad, his killing arsenal will wane and his command will slip away. India and the US make up over 50% of Russia’s arms sales, and they both want strong action on Syria. The US has led efforts to stop the violence, and a group of US Senators is right now calling on the Pentagon to cancel a massive helicopter contract with Rosoboronexport. India already voted to stop the violence in Syria at the UN Security Council. Now, experts say if there’s even a hint that the Indian government might reconsider its patronage of Rosoboronexport because of Syria, sales to the regime could end, and the Russians could ditch their support for Assad. Rosoboronexport could be held legally responsible for war crimes for sending weapons to the Syrian regime, but due to huge profits and a sense of impunity, they continue their bloody business as usual. Diplomatic pressure is mounting on Russia right now, but it is this financial threat that could be the deciding card. We have to act now and make sure hundreds of thousands of us speak out before Rosoboronexport arrives in Paris next week. Click to call on the US and India to stop Russia’s deadly deals now and forward to everyone: http://www.avaaz.org/en/us_and_india_stop_syrias_merchants_of_death/?vl Over the past year, Avaaz members have supported the Syrian spring and an end to the violence -- we have broken the blackout, exposed hidden atrocities and provided critical lifelines to Syrians under siege. Today we are delivering our petition to the UN to call for more monitors. Now, let's do all we can to cut off the weapons at the source that are killing the Syrian people. In short, the core team has prepared a set of Strategy documents that we want to discuss with the community, to improve and strengthen them. Then, once we have a rough consensus about it, we want to work together putting it in practice. Knowledge and Technology for a Free Knowledge Society is what the FKI works for. We aim to facilitate and enable the study, sharing and collaborative development of free knowledge. Our offering is a shared vision and common platform for education, collaboration and advocacy in free knowledge and free technology. The platform is completely based on free software and free knowledge and is organised in a bottom-up manner. We distinguish three types of opportunities that may be of interest to participants: learning opportunities: use any of the existing resources participate in working groups take part in courses economic opportunities: by co-organising courses, work as assistant or partner developing projects along one of the business models join the Free Technology Guild to share and realise projects together advocacy/activism opportunities: propose actions and campaigns participate in existing campaigns blog and share your knowledge The FKI's initial mission has been to apply the principles of copyleft and free software to other domains of knowledge. While its focus has been mostly on Education, Software and Standards, we feel it is time to expand into other domains. We invite interested people to join us in new domains like hardware and energy, and to suggest other domains of interest. Besides asking for your comments on our draft Strategy documents, we invite you to share any thoughts and ideas that can help us reach our common goal. Maybe you consider we're missing out on something important, or you would like us to perform a certain role or service. Let us know! And stand prepared to help us fulfilling it :) The main Strategy documents can be found here: [1]. If you register an account on the wiki you can leave comments at the discussion page. You're also very welcome to use the FKI discussion list [2] to discuss these and other issues. Thank you all in advance, The FKI Team [1] http://freeknowledge.eu/wiki/index.php/Strategy [2] http://mail.freeknowledge.eu/mailman/listinfo/discussion

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Positive Money <info(a)positivemoney.org.uk> To: Robert <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, 7 June 2012, 19:03 Subject: Join the Cast of 97% Owned, and other news Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Dear Robert, We're here with many positive news again: the money reform documentary "97% Owned" has been viewed on YouTube over 100,000 times in the first 4 weeks. For a YouTube video that doesn't include a cat falling off something, that's an impressive start! We're also starting to plan our 2012 conference - and we need your thoughts on how we should run it this time (see the survey below). Around the country more local events and campaigns are taking shape, and the issue of privatized money creation is even gaining more attention in the media (see BBC Radio 4 and Russia Today below). 1) Join us for a Cast & Crew Screening of “97% Owned” on June 26th in London Did you have a chance to see the excellent documentary “97% Owned” yet? It’s the first documentary to tackle the issue of money creation from a UK-perspective and presents serious research and verifiable evidence on our economic and financial system. In London the Cast and Crew Screening of “97% Owned” Documentary will take place on 26th June. If you would like to spend an evening with the Producers & Interviewees and join the debate, tickets are still available, but it's first come first served so book now. Outside of London? Free and ticketed screenings around the country are happening over the next few months, so check out the dates . If you don’t see any close to you, you can organize one too. Please get in touch and let us know by replying to this email. We'd love to help out. 2) YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE: We're planning our annual conference... We're planning our annual conference and want to know what you want to see. Please take 2 minutes to respond to 7 easy questions to help Positive Money ensure that this year's conference is even more successful than the previous two 3) We've found our Creative Genius(es) Thank you to everyone who helped us looking for the creative genius to join our staff! We are happy to inform you that we have now found somebody. We'll let you know more once he starts (in the middle of June). And a big thanks also to everybody who is helping to fund his work! We are still looking for funding to cover his salary in the long term. The offer of R H Southern Trust to match all monthly donations for the next 12 months now applies until we've raised a full salary for our video, graphics and animation work. So if you donate £10 a month by direct debit or standing order, the RH Southern Trust will donate an additional £120 to Positive Money, doubling your donation! If you would you like to financially support the creation of new videos, infographics etc. to educate a few million people about the flaws in our debt-based monetary system, in an entertaining and compelling way, you can donate here. 4) Positive Money Supporters are Out in Force: Supporters in Manchester used the opportunity to spread the message about the flaws of our monetary system on the 'Austerity' & 'Debt Jubilee' street party in Manchester on 26th May. InNewcastle the group of supporters was campaigning with banners and flyers atthe Green Festival on 2 and 3 June 2012. Read about their experiences here. Also in Northern Ireland we have had interesting activities recently. The Belfast supporters gave a presentation on the problems of our current system to the members of Green Party Northern Ireland. They were very interested in the campaign and willing to help spread this information. Thanks to this we may be able to get meetings with other Green Party members across the U.K. 5) Upcoming Events: Mon 18 June, Sheffield: “97% Owned” Documentary Screening Mon 25 June, Richmond (North Yorks): “97% Owned” Screening Tue 26 June, London: “97% Owned” Documentary – Cast and Crew Screening Sun 1 July, London: “97% Owned” Documentary Screening 6) Latest from the Blog: Treasury Spreads Misinformation BBC Radio 4 Analysis: Why Economics Is Bunk (This time some reality-based information from BBC!
