Fw: [MacroScan] What's New on Macroscan (April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012)
by robert searle 02 May '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: E R F <erf(a)vsnl.com> To: MacroScan Mailing List <macroscan(a)lists.riseup.net> Sent: Wednesday, 2 May 2012, 9:08 Subject: [MacroScan] What's New on Macroscan (April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012) ________________________________ What's New on Macroscan (April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012) www.macroscan.org or www.macroscan.net ________________________________ CURRENT ISSUES Affordable Medicine: A big step forward Apr 27th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar The recent judgement by India's Controller of Patents granting Compulsory License to an Indian pharmaceutical company for the production of a cancer drug, the patent for which is held by German pharmaceuticals and chemicals giant Bayer, is not just historic but path breaking. The Dollar Drain Apr 16th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar With the government announcing the new liberalised norm for remittances for Indian residents, there has been a spurt in capital outflow from the country. The rising Indian appetite to invest abroad could prove a problem if uncertainty with regard to rupee rises, as such uncertainty could trigger capital flight in a liberalised environment. ________________________________ FEATURES Factor Shares in the Indian Economy Apr 17th 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar and Jayati Ghosh The functional distribution of national income is relatively ignored by researchers interested in income distribution in India. An analysis of CSO's data on factor shares in the past three decades shows that the the period of most rapid acceleration of growth was also the period of the sharpest fall in the share of the unorganised sector in GDP. Although this change is to be welcomed, the concern is that it has not been accompanied by any increase in the organised sector's share in total employment. Post-Crisis Reform: A lost opportunity? Apr 3rd 2012, C.P. Chandrasekhar and Jayati Ghosh In its recently released annual report, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas makes a case for breaking up banks considered too big to fail. But the failure to do that is only one possible way in which the opportunity provided by the crisis to reform and regulate finance has been lost. ________________________________ POLICY WATCH Food and Agriculture: Trends in India into the early Twelfth Plan period Apr 23rd 2012, Rahul Goswami The transformation taking place in India's agriculture and crop cultivation choices is brought about by a few key factors that have begun to heavily influence the patterns of crop cultivation, the movement of food through India and the effect of these on nutrition on different income classes in rural and urban habitats. In this view, foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail and the influence of the retail food industry is linked with climate change impacts and the proposed genetic engineering solutions; the combining of agriculture, health and nutrition is aided by pro-technology policies and consumption geared for urbanising India; and the domination by the USA of the crop science, research agenda and market reform process is still evident. These factors are responsible for the repetition of the misdiagnosis of impending hunger in the country by the Government of India as being a consequence of a lack of food, to be tackled today, and tackled exclusively by technological means. ________________________________ ANNOUNCEMENTS Applications are invited from students enrolled in Ph.D. programmes for participating in a one week summer workshop organised by the Azim Premji University in collaboration with the Institute for New Economic Thinking, 9-15 July 2012, Bangalore. [Applications must be submitted by May 20, 2012] Apr 20th, 2012. Call for Papers for the 2012 European Group for Public Administration (EGPA) Annual Conference in the area of 'Public Administration, Technology & Innovation' (PATI) and Special call for papers on 'Management and Innovation in State-owned Enterprises', 5-8 September 2012, Bergen, Norway. [Deadline for abstracts: 1 June, 2012] Apr 12th, 2012. ________________________________ MacroScan is a website managed by professional economists seeking to provide an alternative to conservative and mainstream positions in economics. Fw: Fair play for Yulia
by robert searle 01 May '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Dalia Hashad - Avaaz.org <avaaz(a)avaaz.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Tuesday, 1 May 2012, 2:18 Subject: Fair play for Yulia Dear friends, Right now, Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine’s imprisoned opposition leader is on her 11th day of hunger strike. In weeks, Ukraine is hosting Euro 2012 and President Yanukovych wants to use it as a diplomatic opportunity to whitewash his regimes wrongdoing. Germany is considering boycotting the games as long as Tymoshenko is in jail. Let’s call on all heads of state not to go and put democracy and human rights first. Sign the petition, now: Right now, Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine’s imprisoned opposition leader and most popular Ukrainian politician, is on her 11th day of hunger strike -- risking death to protest her brutal mistreatment and denial of urgent medical care. But, we have a chance to help save her and help restore the Ukraine’s best hope for democracy. In weeks, all eyes will be on Ukraine as the country co-hosts the Euro 2012 football championships -- one of the world’s biggest sporting events. President Yanukovych is desperate to use the event to whitewash his regime's crimes and help consolidate his power and image with global leaders by having them as his guests at the games. Tymoshenko is asking world leaders not to legitimize him by attending the games. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she is considering boycotting the games so long as Tymoshenko is imprisoned. And today other countries announced they are considering doing the same. Let’s pile on the pressure and tell all our world leaders not to go. Time is running out quickly -- sign the petition now and send it to everyone: http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_yulia_timoshenko_a/?vl Yulia Tymoshenko, the former prime minister and a leader of Ukraine’s Orange revolution was jailed last year -- and sentenced to seven years for abuse of office in what critics called a politically motivated show trial designed to keep Ukraine’s top political leader out of the next few election cycles. Denied urgent medical treatment for a serious spinal injury and charging prison guards with violent assault, Tymoshenko went on hunger strike on the 20th of April. Days ago, photos were leaked showing severe bruising on Tymoshenko’s body. Ukraine has been home to serious political scandal, violent human rights abuses and is even planning to force its students to move out of their dorms and provide free labour during the games. Getting the games to the Ukraine is a political coup in President Yanukovych’s plan to revamp his image. A heads of state boycott of matches in Ukraine would be a diplomatic derailment of his PR plans. The major football club Bayern Munich is asking UAEFA for action and several EU heads of state are refusing to attend high-level meetings in the Ukraine unless action is taken. The pressure is mounting and the world’s leaders are paying attention. Our massive outcry now to world leaders who are already wavering could end Tymoshenko's abuse and push for human rights and democracy in Ukraine. Sign the urgent petition now:http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_yulia_timoshenko_a/?vl Today, Tymoshenko, Ukraine's most popular politician, is in her prison cell in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv -- one of the cities hosting Euro 2012 games. Let’s stand with her now and join together to make sure the world does not pander to this regime and that Ukraine’s democracy doesn’t die in prison. With hope and determination, Dalia, Sam, Alice, Antonia, Ricken, Laura, Anu, and the whole Avaaz team More Information: Angela Merkel plans Euro 2012 boycott if Yulia Tymoshenko kept in jail (The Guardian) http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/apr/29/angela-merkel-boycott-euro-2012… and Tymoshenko: Merkel Rediscovers a Soft Spot for Human Rights (Spiegel) http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,830551,00.html EU leaders shun Ukraine over Tymoshenko case (AFP) http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jzsbhRYUT921nc9o-aS5YHuK… Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness: 'Respect for Every Player Who Takes a Stand on Ukraine' (Spiegel) http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,830553,00.html European Union Protests Ukraine’s Treatment of Jailed Ex-Premier (New York Times) http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/world/europe/europe-protests-ukraines-tre… Jailed former Ukraine prime minister must be released (Amnesty) http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/jailed-former-ukraine-prime-mini… Support the Avaaz Community!
