Dear Friends It's been over a year since a message went out on this list, due to my focusing on work with groups not only in London, but all over the UK. The reason for sending this message now is that during last week I have been attending a series of seminars promoted by Rev Peter Challen of the London Global Table, together with the School of Commoning, working with key organisations. The main speaker is James Quilligan, an independent, erudite, US academic. Commoning poses questions about what we can hold in common, eg intellectual property, land? and possibly money. In this time of financial crisis the task is to consider what can be done to change the model of ownership - and this is where the model of currency that Local Exchange Trading employs, ie "mutual credit" has been acknowledged as having important implications. The meetings from tonight onwards, which are open (at only £5) are listed below, see also links below to the School of Commoning and the whole list. Simpol International - News Update Simultaneous Policy: using our votes for global co-operation Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 Dear friend, Simpol's profile continues to grow. Simpol is a unique campaign that allows us to use our right to vote in a new way that drives all politicians to cooperate globally to solve global problems like climate change, chaotic global financial markets, and global poverty. Please join in the following to fiind out more: Hear integral teacher, Terry Patten, interview Simpol's founder, John Bunzl about Simpol and global activism on May 13th This coming Sunday at 10am (U.S. Pacific Time) or 6pm UK time, integral teacher, Terry Patten, will interview John as part of Terry's excellent 'Beyond Awakening' online interview series. Watch John Bunzl's TEDx presentation, "Thinking like Einstein" Think globally? You may think you do. But what does global thinking really entail? And why is it vital if we're to solve global problems? See John's May 5th TEDx presentation here http://new.livestream.com/tedx/GoodenoughCollege2012/ John's talk starts 14:30 minutes in to the video. It was part of Goodenough College's TEDx event entitiled 'The Future of Humanity: The big picture'. Check out the other talks too! If you haven't already signed on to the campaign, please do so on our brand new global website at http://www.simpol.org. Supporting Simpol is free and takes just a moment. Many thanks and best wishes, John Bunzl – Founder & Trustee International Simultaneous Policy Organisation (ISPO) http://www.simpol.org Blog: http://simpolinternational.blogspot.com/ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/johnbunzl YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/johnbunzl It’s often said that the world’s problems will be solved only when there is sufficient political will. And as citizens, we naturally expect our politicians to manifest this political will. But today’s global problems transcend national borders and require governments to act together. However, instead of co-operating, governments are predictably more concerned with competing with each other to keep their national economies ‘internationally competitive.’ But this is a vicious circle; a game no nation can win and one we all will ultimately lose. John Bunzl has engaged in a full-hearted, committed exploration of how to transcend this destructive cycle. This has been a journey into expanded consciousness as well as a journey into committed activism John and Terry will be discussing the globally-oriented, highly creative model of political engagement that John and his organization Simpol offer as a solution to such questions as: how can we, as citizens, drive our governments to cooperate to solve global problems? How can we go beyond protest, lobbying and email petitions to embrace a new, powerful and effective form of global political activism? How can we reengage with national electoral politics in a completely new, integral way that’s non-partisan, politically effective, and takes the whole world into account? Greek Elections
by Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis 07 May '12

07 May '12

7 months after the occupy Syntagma Square movement, the elections have shown that the Greek citizens believe that an alternative political program is possible. It is important to note that during this period, in one year, unemployment in Greece rose 10 per cent. Have a look at this graph<http://www.google.com/publicdata/explore?ds=z8o7pt6rd5uqa6_&ctype=l&strail=…> . These results will have a significant impact in Europe. Greece might be thrown away from Europe but Greece's paradigm will provoke internal popular movements in other European countries. One thing is certain. The economy as we know it in Europe cannot continue to work in the same way. It would work if people accepted the austerity measures, if people accepted to work more and be paid less. The question then is: Will the new popular governments be able to propose an alternative economic model? Will they erase the old ways for new ones? The p2p movement needs to offer new alternative ways. Right now, we have either the possibility of nationalization of the economy or capitalism. We need a p2p way of controlling the economy. . -- Sincerely yours, Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Bill McKibben - 350.org <organizers(a)350.org> To: robert searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Saturday, 5 May 2012, 2:03 Subject: Not a normal day. Greetings! For some people on our email list, dawn has arrived on Saturday and Climate Impacts Day has already begun. So this is a short reminder that 5/5 is no normal day — it’s the day that people around the world are coming together to Connect the Dots about climate change. I’ve just heard that the very first action, in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean where the sun rises first, was a great success: people there dove down for an underwater rally on their threatened coral reef. So even if it’s raining where you are, know that some people have already gotten entirely wet to sound the alarm! Here's the place to find the nearest action — and when you’re done go back to the computer to watch the images scroll in from around the planet (and make sure to upload your own photos). This is like a giant seminar on the topic: What does global warming look like in its early stages? And if we can put a human face on climate change it will help immeasurably in all our campaigning in the years ahead. You’re that human face. Thanks so much for heading out to help. Bill McKibben P.S. Don’t forget to upload your photos from your events to ClimateDots.org! There are full instructions on the website, but the basic idea is to attach your single best photo and email it to photos(a)350.org — and make sure to put the location of the photo in the subject line and the the story behind the photo as the text of the email. ________________________________ 350.org is building a global movement to solve the climate crisis. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: The Buckminster Fuller Institute <contact(a)bfi.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Friday, 4 May 2012, 20:07 Subject: 2012 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Finalists Announced ______________________________________________________________________________________________ May 4, 2012 NEW YORK CITY —The Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) is proud to announce the finalists for the 2012 Buckminster Fuller Challenge, each providing a workable solution and whole systems approach to the world's most significant challenges. The Buckminster Fuller Challenge, named "Socially-Responsible Design's Highest Award" by Metropolis Magazine, is the annual global competition recognizing bold, visionary, tangible initiatives that take a comprehensive, anticipatory, design science approach to radically advance human well being and the health of our planet's ecosystems. Among other criteria, entrants are judged on the feasibility of their initiative, whether it is able to withstand rigorous empirical testing, its ability to not only sustain, but enhance the environment, and its ability to scale and adapt to a broad range of conditions. 2012 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Finalists Are: * Eco-Fuel Africa Limited, a budding enterprise led by a dynamic Ugandan entrepreneur, Sanga Moses, leverages simple technologies to address multiple critical social and environmental problems, boosting rural incomes, combating deforestation, sequestering CO2, reducing indoor air pollution, enhancing the fertility of depleted farming soils, and radically improving overall health and wellbeing of the community. * Future of Fish, applies rigorous design thinking with a comprehensive systems view to the massive crisis of over-harvesting that threatens the world's wild marine fisheries with collapse, and addresses complex systems challenges that have broad applicability. * The Living Building Challenge, launched by a pioneer in green architecture, is a philosophy, advocacy tool, and performance standard - setting the highest standard of environmental in buildings, reframing how buildings and infrastructure function within ecosystems. * The Water Retention Landscape of Tamera, combines a profound spiritual connection to the land with scientific rigor and a high degree of creativity and innovation to shape a landscape an maximize the retention of rainwater and circulate it in such a way that biodiversity, food production, and human wellbeing are all harmoniously enhanced.______________________________________________________________________________________________ The finalists represent a pool of top entries that hail from architecture, non-profit organizations, and startups. They are social entrepreneurs, architects, and seasoned comprehensive designers. The projects have undergone a rigorous review for adherence to the entry criteria and interviews with the individual or team behind the strategy. They were advanced from a pool of 122 entries from around the world that were then narrowed down to 18 semi-finalists. A panel of 9 distinguished jurors— all internationally recognized leaders in design and sustainability, met for intense and lively deliberations to select the finalists. "It is phenomenally important what BFI is doing, and it was really, absolutely fascinating to learn about each of these projects and it is incredibly encouraging to see this comprehensive design science thinking showing up in the applications, and for BFI to shine a light on them!" Kenny Ausubel, 2012 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Juror The Challenge winner will be announced during a day event with Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design on Wednesday, June 6 in New York City. The event will feature presentations by the finalists, a panel discussion, a tour of 41 Cooper Square, and an award ceremony with keynote speaker John Todd. Special guests Kenny Ausubel, Co-CEO & Founder of Bioneers, Helen and Newton Harrison of The Harrison Studio, leading pioneers of the eco-art movement, and Janice Perlman, Founder and President of The Mega-Cities Project, will participate in a panel discussion. "Fun, and Games"
by robert searle 05 May '12

05 May '12

Most of my posting occurs on MBs Facebook site. The following is a cut and paste " fun, and games" scenario on MTT, and TFE....This may continue... http://www.facebook.com/surprisinglyfree#!/groups/156161594445160/ Robert, there seems to be a fundamental belief that "too much" money creation causes inflation, which could be cured by taxation. However, money does not exist in a vacuum. It is spent, which means adding money creates demand for goods and services, while subtracting money reduces demand. Bottom line: Changing the money supply affects more than inflation; it affects the economy. A better inflation fighter is to change the demand for money itself. I think if we had a near perfect knowledge of the economy, and powerful instant direct controls (as opposed to tax, and interest which are indirect controls, and could be phased out) we would be able to move forwards without serious fears about inflation . Ofcourse, for the time being sufficient new money could be created electronically.Indeed, this is what happened to a certain extent with the Vietnam War if I am correct..... Thursday at 10:21 · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell Further, there has been no relationship between federal deficits and inflation. The answer is we cannot with complete confidence. However, to be fair it is possible with some confidence to create new money (ie.QE) using the aid of conventional data (eg.Consumer Prices Index). But at the end of day unless we have a credible 24/7 understanding of the actual economy in real time inflation risk assessments will largely be questionable. This is why Transfinancial Economics is of huge importance. It is the REVOLUTION per se in economics because for the first time it would offer a more "scientific" understanding of the ACTUAL mechanics of our Free Market Economy. 23 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Robert Searle Personally, I think there is great truth in your article, and as I said before it is very clear. But we cannot know with ABSOLUTE CONFIDENCE that things could really go wrong. This is the problem. This is why Transfinancial Economics is so important, and absolutely vital if humanity is to progress successfully into the future.... 22 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Robert Searle This is why my project on TFE is far more important than MMT which has only an INCOMPLETE understanding of the economy. 17 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell Not being familiar with "Transfinancial Economics" I looked it up. I noticed this line: " . . . taxing authorities would need to be replaced with an “inflation authority” which controls the economy by deciding who can receive system credits, and in what amount." That is in agreement with Monetary Sovereignty. Federal taxes and borrowing would be eliminated. Also, on several occasions, I have suggested federal ownership of all banks, which is similar to your non-debt economy. However, in the U.S., we have many other governments -- state, county, city, parks -- and none of them are Monetarily Sovereign, so cannot simply create dollars (credits) at will. The federal government can and should provide dollars to these "sub-governments." They, however, demand some measure of autonomy, which includes taxing and borrowing. 16 hours ago via · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell Mr. Reisberg, The graph shows no relationship between federal spending and inflation. If federal spending caused inflation, we should see a relationship between increases in federal spending and increases in inflation. And we should see a relationship between decreases in federal spending and decreases in inflation. We see no such relationships. Now it is possible to see if there is a relationship exists between inflation and other kinds of spending (Mortgage, consumer credit, business, state government), but I'm not sure that's what you're asking. 13 hours ago via · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell If the government had not spent, we would have had a depression: 1817-1821: U. If you believe federal spending increases inflation, then over time increases in federal spending should show a pattern of increased inflation. If you don't see that pattern, and you still believe (with no supporting evidence) federal spending causes inflation, you then you also would have to believe increases in federal spending correspond by coincidence, with some anti-inflationary effect. Right? So you have not been much help in my "quest for truth." You asked what would have happened if the government had not spent, and I showed you the answer: Depression. Sorry, if those data are not what you wanted. 12 hours ago via · LikeUnlike * Roland Berie Tschäff is right Rodger Malcolm Mitchell, your methodology does not tease out the contribution to inflation/deflation of government spending. I would go a step farther and say it's an exercise in futuility because some government spending may add to inflationary pressures, think of all the oil consumed by the military, while other government spending might reduce inflationary pressure, think how a fire department keeps us from rebuilding our cities. 12 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell I'm satisfied. You both are saying there is no methodology that will demonstrate whether or not, or how much, federal spending contributes to inflation. I believe you both to be dead wrong. If A causes B, then the evidence for that would be, increases in A causing increases in B, and decreases in A causing decreases in B. But I'm happy to leave it, right where it began: There is no evidence to show that federal spending causes inflation. That's what I said in the first place. 12 hours ago via · LikeUnlike * Genaro Grasso Grasso Genaro Deficits can also be a result of inflation, as the government has to spend more to buy the same goods and taxes always are payed with a delay at before prices. What mechanism would you suggest for deficits to create inflation, if there are idle resources? It is the other way round, to buy smething that is more expensive, you need to take a bigger credit (in the bank for consumers or investors, in the FED for the government). 10 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell Right Genaro, In today's world economy, where products and services easily are purchased from all over the world, it is quite difficult to cause inflation when there are idle resources -- and easy to cure it. Inflation has been the debt-hawk mantra for many years. They still talk about Weimar and Zimbabwe as examples, of course, having no idea what caused those inflations. Meanwhile, inflation fear leads to recessions all over the world. 9 hours ago via · LikeUnlike * Rodger Malcolm Mitchell So, go ahead and isolate. Prove your point, whatever it may be. It's a bit disingenuous to say I'm wrong but you don't know how to demonstrate it. What makes your intuition definitive? 9 hours ago via · LikeUnlike * Genaro Grasso Grasso Genaro Government spending is supposed to be inflationary because aggregate demand is too big and there's no productive capacity. If government spending is increasing ad other components also, rhwb your hypothetical inflation-deflation bias does not exist. 7 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Genaro Grasso Grasso Genaro I know, but theory is important to get correlations right. Let's say we try to study the fiscal and monetary policy impact on the solution to the great depression( as Christina Romer did). If we're not counting that they used monetary policies to spend in deficits, you may be counting as monetary policy something that was fiscal, and, therefore, you might say that fiscal policies aren't important, as Romer did. 6 hours ago · LikeUnlike * Genaro Grasso Grasso Genaro What I'm saying is that, in theory, fiscal deficits make preassures in markets with growing private sector spending because there is no capacity left to produce them, and then prices must go up. We could then a) study the utilisation capacity and the relationship of full utilisation of it and inflation (you will see there that full utilisation is never reached), b) you could use only the years when there was fiscal policy in a context of private spending expansion. There there won't be any deflation because the state and the people would be "in competence" for a limited market, and you could estimate the impact. I know the experience, and this is the price one has to pay for trying to introduce a "new" paradigm. Unsuprisingly, I have yet to see any comments about Transfinancial Economics.... 32 minutes ago · LikeUnlike * Robert Searle Ofcourse, in advanced stage TFE we would know at the point of transaction whether there are any inflationary pressures at work, and where they originate in REAL TIME. This is revolutionary......and goes beyond MMT, and indeed, Social Credit as well........
