----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Positive Money <info(a)positivemoney.org.uk> To: Robert <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, 19 April 2012, 11:03 Subject: New Documentary & New Book about Money Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Dear Robert, After nearly two years of hard work, there's some real momentum building in the movement to democratise money and reform our privatised, debt-based money system. The next couple of months will see the launch of a new UK-focussed documentary about money (see below), the release of our report on the shift of power from Parliament to the big banks, the release of James Robertson's latest book, entitled 'Future Money', and the birth of a sister to Positive Money in Ireland (below). Ben will be speaking at the JustBanking conference in Edinburgh this Friday, which also features Prof Richard Werner, Prof Steve Keen, Josh Ryan-Collins, Molly Scott Cato and the Bank of England's Adam Posen. It seems a few tickets are still available here. We're also seeing more economists talk about the ability that banks have to create money. At the Institute for New Economic Thinking conference in Berlin last weekend, even the Chairman of the FSA was talking about 'credit creation' (the economist jargon for banks creating money). Next week we'll be making an announcement about something that will really speed up the campaign, and we'll be asking for your help too. For now, here's the latest news: 1) 97% Owned - the New UK Documentary about Money on 1st May The first UK-focused documentary about money, money creation and the privatised, debt-based money system will be released on 1stMay! The documentary features interviews with Ben Dyson of Positive Money, Josh-Ryan Collins of the New Economics Foundation, Ann Pettifor, the Jubilee Debt Campaign and other people involved in monetary reform. You can watch the trailer here: The documentary will be available free online or on DVDs in two versions (60 minute version focused on money creation and potential reforms and full, extended 2 hour 20minute version). You'll be able to get DVDs from Positive Money - watch this space. There'll also be a screening in London towards the end of May, and hopefully screenings around the country. More on that soon... 2. New book 'Future Money - Breakdown or Breakthrough' James Robertson is the author of the excellent book 'Creating New Money', which served as the basis for much of our work on reforming the monetary system. His new book has been published TODAY and is highly recommended. “…the money system now is like the result of someone “seeking to build a substantial house by working spasmodically on odd portions of the structure on quite isolated plans, fashioning minute details of some upper parts, when he has not set up, nor indeed even planned out, the substructure which is their sole foundation…” If you’d like to order a printed version, you can do so via Green Books (and support an independent publisher as well, rather than Amazon!) 3) New video - Banking behind Housing Crisis – Toby Lloyd Watch Toby Lloyd, from housing charity Shelter, who was speaking at Positive Money conference about the consequences of the current system of money creation by banks on rising house prices, redistribution of wealth upwards, higher inequality and a culture of unearned wealth. Watch here 4) TEDx Talk – Changing The Rules of Banking This is worth watching! Excellent TEDx talk by Simon Dixon on why changing the rules of banking is so important. Watch here 5) 'Sensible Money' in Ireland A sister campaign has been launched in Ireland. Paul Ferguson and James McKumiskey would like to hear from anyone else in Ireland who would like to get involved in growing this initiative. You can contact them at info(a)sensiblemoney.ie, and check out the growing website at http://www.sensiblemoney.ie/ 6) Help needed: Translators We need people who can help to transcribe (i.e. type up) and translate the new documentary 97% Owned (see above) so that we can provide subtitles for the hard of hearing or non-English speakers on YouTube (and get this message out to the rest of the world). For transcription, you simply need to type out what is said for a 15 minute segment of the film (which would take about 1 hours' work, depending on how fast you type). If you want to do this you'll also get to view the film earlier than anyone else! For translation, we'll give you a full transcript of the film and you simply need to translate the text into your home language. If you want to help, please let us know via email on info(a)positivemoney.org.uk 7) Upcoming Meetups & Events EDINBURGH: CONFERENCE "Just Banking" - Edinburgh 19-20 April BIRMINGHAM: Is banking to blame for poverty and debt?, Sat 21st April (…see video invitation by Dick Rogers) NEWCASTLE: Why Debt Is Not a Choice - Tue 24th April SHEFFIELD Positive Money Meetup – Mon 30th April LONDON: Is Banking To Blame for Poverty & Debt? - Mon 2nd April 8) Latest from the Blog “Mickey Mouse Models” of Economics ‘Decades’ of Cuts and Tax Rises Ahead? Support Ourproject.org & Comunes.org / Apoya a Ourproject.org y a Comunes.org / Apoia a Ourproject.org
by donate＠ourproject.org 16 Apr '12

16 Apr '12

Muchas gracias. Un cordial saludo, El equipo detrás de Ourproject.org y Comunes.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [ENGLISH]: Dear members of Ourproject.org: We are contacting you in order to update you on a new way of collaborating in the growth of our community. As you know, Ourproject has lived an extraordinary growth from its birth 10 years ago, as today we already have 1.079 projects which all together receive around a million visits per month. Everything with no ads and sharing their work with free licenses, following the spirit of this community. This growth has required to increase the capacity of the servers and infrastructure of Ourproject and the other projects under the umbrella of our non-profit Comunes.org. In this line, we joined other similar collectives to form a Collective Data Centre, with enough resources for all of us: http://comunes.org/787/building-a-collective-data-centre/ Besides, it’s time to offer new and more advanced services that we have been developing in the last five years, such as: http://kune.ourproject.org http://kune.cc However, this implies a continuous economic effort. Furthermore, the time has come to renew our servers, that have already shown serious signals and issues: http://comunes.org/909/help-servers-hardware/ that you may have suffered, with more frequent problems in the service. We should take into account that during these 10 years we have been assuming the efforts from our personal economic contributions. That is why we have decided to create a new method of participation and co-funding for the old and new members of Ourproject. It consists of regular, variable and fully optional economic contributions (each one to the extent of their capabilities, avoiding fixed quotas), that would allow us to sustain the expenses, so everyone in the community can help sustaining this common ecosystem. Thus, we have prepared a donation page: http://comunes.org/donate/ in which you could, if you want to, collaborate with regular monthly quotas. These contributions will be used just for the maintenance of the servers and infrastructure, and we’ll keep with the spirit of Ourproject and Comunes by not seeking profit in any way, and not placing ads anywhere. Every economic move done with these contributions will be clearly exposed to the community, transparently, in a highlighted part of our pages. Thanks a lot for your support, The team behind Ourproject.org and Comunes.org

Fw: Is the Euro an Error? Associate! April 2012
by robert searle 16 Apr '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Associative Economics Bulletin <ame(a)cfae.biz> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Monday, 16 April 2012, 9:45 Subject: Is the Euro an Error? Associate! April 2012 Associative Economics: Is the Euro an Error? Associate! April 2012 Is this email not displaying correctly? Click here to view in your browser. Is the Euro an Error? Associate! April 2012 See link below In this issue of Associate! we consider the problems facing the eurozone, meaning the 17 countries that have adopted the euro as a shared currency and sole legal tender. This is a hugely complicated topic, so we concentrate on one aspect, albeit one that goes to the heart of the problem: Is the euro a political or an economic currency? We lead with two incisive comments by Anthony Coughlan and Tim Congdon on this matter, chosen to emphasise the question of the euro’s economic credentials. Sign of our Time has two elements. The first is a quotation fromRichard Cobden, an early proponent of inter-country economic cooperation through free trade, but not the strident sort it has now become. On Cobden’s death in 1865, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Drouyn de Lhuys, said: “He is above all in our eyes the representative of sentiments and those cosmopolitan principles before which national frontiers and rivalries disappear; whilst essentially of his country, he was still more of his time, an international man.” The second, by Giscard d’Estaing on the ecu (now euro) as a parallel currency, shows that even a staunch advocate of political union can see the merit of economic cooperation and the possibility of a currency serving economic cohesion without the need for amalgamated sovereignty. In the feature, Optimising the Euro, we consider what it means for the euro to be an economic currency. We do so by reference first to Keynes’s (1940) image of the sterling area pound and the conceptually related proposal for an International Clearing Union. We then examine the idea of an optimal currency area by reviewing a seminal article by Robert Mundell in the light of associative economics. AEX Pages mainly concerns book reviews this time. "gotuxosi"
by Carmen Irurzun Anton 16 Apr '12

Dear P2P I joined (somehow, as I don´t know anything yet) your project recently - I was given a password: "gotuxosi", and, the more I read about your initiatives the more I like the mentality underlying it all. I got to know Michael Bawens´writings in Al-Jazeera, and it was like having a manuscript in your hand , and being given the alphabet which gives sense to a series of signs -facts - that were there all the time but you lacked the means to "read" them. My main profession has been teaching (languages, to adults as well as teenagers, to executives as well as barely literate, but also mathematics, chemistry or philosophy to seconday and high-school pupils), but I have always been interested in the limits of human communication and conceptions, how we "see" and "don´t see" the surrounding reality, and "hear" and "don´t hear" what people are telling us (the way, as Harley Shands put it, we use words to explain the world, but at the same time words frame the way we see the world we want to explain). And especially in the inter-gender relationship, where so many interested frames have been put in that blurr the visibility. I started an investigation - a book- but I had to let it aside for lack of time. When I browsed into your website, I wondered if I could be of any use to the P2P Project: I am willing, although I can offer limited time. You will let me know, won´t you? Best regards Carmen Irurzun

crowd sourced permaculture tools and database ?
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 11 Apr '12

11 Apr '12

Does anyone know of a tool to collaboratively *map synergies between plants+animals,* *and add various data on the plants and their synnergies,* at various levels ( top soil up till trees ) ? ideally, a ( distributed ? ) internet based platform and software tool, to be used from a internet browser, with a open and free license on the data and software used, much like wikipedia. When searching via google<https://www.google.be/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ix=sea&ie=UTF-8&ion=1#h…> , I find the following person, who has a similar approach, and attempts to converge interest for project development : http://www.foodandtechconnect.com/site/2011/04/20/polyculturetech-part-i-th… excerpt : *"what would a design tool for curating meaningful ecological relationships look like?* *A decade ago, inspired by this question, I conceived of a web-based application for designing Permaculture guilds. I solicited a team of developers, secured funding, and began project managing the development of the application, which was dubbed (now embarrassingly) the Permaculture Information Web. And thus were planted the seeds of awesomeness. But in time, I meandered off to grad school, funding dried up, and the project has since been cryogenically frozen. That is, until there’s interest in unfreezing it.* *In the interest of a potential resuscitation, here’s the vision.* *My intention for the application is to enable gardeners and farmers, rural and urban, to design and grow Permaculture guilds. The interface of the application would be similar to those of concept-mapping tools, which allow users to explicitly define and interact with relationships between components. Although it’s not quite a design app, I’m thinking in terms of Thinkmap’s Visual Thesaurus <http://www.visualthesaurus.com/>, an online, interactive thesaurus. When word is entered, say network, it becomes orbited by its synonyms, which are closer or farther away from the original word based on how close or far away they are in meaning. When one of the synonyms is clicked, it too becomes orbited by its synonyms, and so on, enabling an exploration of language as a complex web of interrelated meanings."*

Hi, Just spotted this short document about Occupy WallStreet and Free Network Foundation: http://motherboard.vice.com/2012/3/28/motherboard-tv-free-the-network excerpt from description: "We even broke a story that popped off on the Internet in the immediate wake of the New York Police Department’s Nov. 17 raid on Zuccotti Park. We traveled with Wilder to a Department of Sanitation garage shortly after he was released from a 36-hour stint in jail. He was looking for things lost in the early morning sweep of Occupy’s epicenter: cash, his backpack and laptop, Zuccotti’s Freedom Tower." ~ elf Pavlik ~

Or maybe just towards $8 a cup? This Wednesday, noon eastern on the National Climate Seminar, join us for “Climate and Coffee”, a conversation with Paul Comey, VP for Environmental Affairs at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Coffee likes a pretty narrow set of ecological conditions, and climate change has already begun to impact supplies. Join us for a discussion of coffee futures, and how coffee companies’ sustainability focus can make a difference. Call-in number: 1-712-432-3100; Conference Code: 253385. Send advance questions for Paul to climate(a)bard.edu. Later in the term, the National Climate Seminar will include Columbia’s Cynthia Rosenzweig on climate and agriculture, and Jihan Gearon from the Black Mesa Coaltion on their frontlines climate work. See the full schedule below. As graduation approaches, I am writing to reach out to capable seniors or alums who are unsure of their plans for the next year. At this critical moment in human history, we can’t afford any future sustainability leaders spinning their wheels for a year. We have a few spots still open in Bard CEP’s MS programs in Environmental Policy and Climate Science and Policy for next fall. Next year as well, we are launching our new MBA in Sustainability —a weekend intensive program based in NYC and one of a handful of programs around the world that fully integrate sustainability into a rigorous graduate business curriculum. I used to advise students to take a year or two “off” before starting their career. I don’t do that anymore. There is too much work to do, and too little time to get it done. I am always glad to set up at time to talk with your students about their future careers—including information about our graduate programs, but more broadly about helping students find their next steps. We are also pleased to announce two new $20,000 scholarships for the MS programs—one for domestic students and another for international. Fw: The Double-Edged Sword of Resilience
by robert searle 03 Apr '12

03 Apr '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: John Fullerton <jfullerton(a)capitalinstitute.org> To: Robert Searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Monday, 2 April 2012, 22:15 Subject: The Double-Edged Sword of Resilience To forward this email, click here. The Double-Edged Sword of Resilience Capital Institute's work on financial system reform is very much driven by the concept of system resilience. In an email exchange last week Bill Rees, co-creator of the "ecological footprint," fellow at the Post Carbon Institute, and professor at the University of British Columbia, invited us to look at resilience from a perspective we often fail to consider. As he explains, while resilience is critical for systems’ survival, in times of great instability, that same resilience can be problematic for the larger system(s) in which a resilient subsystem is housed. This idea is also a critical argument advanced by Donella Meadows in her seminal book Thinking in Systems. Read more at This Week at Capital Institute. We welcome your comments and thoughts on this topic. Please leave them in the comment box on our website or send us an email at contact(a)capitalinstitute.org. ________________________________ It's Conference Season! We’d like to call Capital Institute community’s attention to four not-to-be missed events upcoming this spring. “Degrowth in the Americas,” to be held in Montreal from May 13 to 19 will focus on what degrowth means for our Hemisphere. BALLE’s “Prosperity Starts Here,” to be held in Grand Rapids from May 15 to 19, is the organization’s annual gathering of local economy entrepreneurs and visionaries. The Public Banking Institute is hosting the inaugural Public Banking in America Conference in Philadelphia April 27 to 28, focusing on public banking success stories and the hidden costs of our current banking system. On Earth Day Slow Money NYC will showcase five pioneering food entrepreneurs from the lower Hudson Valley of New York in Pocantico Hills, NY. Capital Institute Founder and President John Fullerton will be a speaker at the Degrowth, BALLE, and Public Banking Institute conferences. Find out more about all four events here. ________________________________ $20 Trillion Choice: An Update Think Progress Green blogger Brad Johnson has posted a two-part interview with John Fullerton about the $20 Trillion Choice he described in CI's Future of Finance blog last July. The first piece lays out the case behind the "Big Choice," and provides an excellent visual of the $20 trillion carbon bubble. The second focuses on the new economy, looking beyond GDP. What We're Reading Two reports out this week emphasize how climate change is already making the weather considerably more extreme. New Reports on Connections Between Extreme Weather and Climate Change ________________________________ Comment of the Week “John, Fascinating to read this ex-insider's calm reflection. What makes it a nightmare situation, to this outsider, is that most people in the industry presumably know full well that the world's 'unsustainable underfunded pension obligations' are features of a global Ponzi scheme - a.k.a. the perpetual growth economy - that cannot be fixed. People who might otherwise have become 'statesmen,' perceiving no way the system can be fixed, therefore game the long collapse, as is happening now. I'd go further than your correspondent Rachel: rather than change the system to one that cannot be gamed, we're best off tending to the seeds of a new kind of economy; gardens can thrive in the absence of all global systems.” - John Thackara, Financial Statesmanship for a New Economy ________________________________ Quote of the Week “Our task is to look at the world and see it whole.” - E.F.
