You have just watched a dead man being re-killed
by David Rose 25 May '11

25 May '11

1) You have just watched a dead man being re-killed. OBL died a long time ago but for various reasons he had to be re-killed in virtual reality. (He probably died from Marfan Syndrome some time ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfan_syndrome) Adam Curtis makes some suggestions about OBL's symbolic value: "One of the main functions of politicians – and journalists – is to simplify the world for us. But there comes a point when – however much they try – the bits of reality, the fragments of events, won't fit into the old frame." http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/may/03/osama-bin-laden-soviet-… "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." George Orwell 1984 2) The specfic timing of the re-death were: President Obama's falling ratings, US economic crisis, the "birther" issue, the failure of the Obama administration to make sense of the "Arab Spring": eg: the totally incoherent bombing of Libya, the opportunity to pull out troops from Afghanistan quickly and save money, the Raymond Davis crisis with Pakistan http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/pakistan/8340999/Raymond-Dav… , and a rumoured new alliance between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia .....plus the mountain of other problems facing America .... but there will definitely be a short term "sugar high" feelgood factor for the Obama administration and the American Establishment. Meanwhile we are being prepped for a false flag nuclear attack: "Five men held outside Sellafield after 'taking pictures', Five men were being questioned by anti-terrorism officers last night after being arrested for allegedly taking pictures outside the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/terrorism-in-the-uk/8491193/Five-men… This Wikileaks story is preparation for a false flag nuclear attack on America. The logic is: al Qaeda have nukes and Pakistan supplied the nukes to al Qaeda. Pakistan is now a major target. We are on the brink of WW3. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8472810/Wikileaks-Al-Qa… The "official story" of OBL's assassination falls apart before our eyes: "Osama Bin Laden dead: White House backtracks on how bin Laden died. The White House admitted last night that its initial account of the way Osama bin Laden died at the hands of US forces had been riddled with errors." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/al-qaeda/8491113/Osama-Bin-Laden-… Osama bin Laden's final moments: America changes its story http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/03/osama-bin-laden-final-moments If you believe the official story of this re-death then you have to believe OBL could live for years in Attobad (the Pakistani equivalent of Sandhurst and West Point) and his presence went undetected by the Pakistani ISI or the army for years (and this information never got back to the CIA). This "story" is of course ridiculous and only a child who wants to believe in fairy tales could believe this BULL SHIT. You also have to believe that America would not want to question OBL when he did not put up a fight (as the new story from the White House tells us that OBL did not put up a fight and offered no resistance). He was apparently executed without an interview and then his body was buried at sea without an independent autopsy! Expect a photo and video of a dead OBL to be released soon by the CIA. This will prove nothing. The whole world is laughing at this ridiculous story. GM Rattner : "US productivity grew right through the recession"

http://www.truthout.org/why-rich-love-high-unemployment/1305061465 <http://www.truthout.org/why-rich-love-high-unemployment/1305061465> excerpted: General Motors (GM) car czar Steven Rattner argues<http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-right-path-on-jobs-jobs-jobs/201…> that America's unemployment crisis is a sign of strength: *"US productivity grew right through the recession"* * * *Rattner comes dangerously close to articulating a full-unemployment policy. * * * *///* * * *Workers' wages and salaries represent roughly two-thirds of production costs and drive inflation. High inflation is a bondholders' worst enemy because bonds are fixed-income securities. For example, if a bond yields a fixed five percent and inflation is running at four percent, the bond's real return is reduced to one percent. High unemployment constrains labor costs and, thus, also functions as an anchor on inflation and inflation expectations - protecting bondholders' real return and principal. * * * *Thanks to the absence of real wage growth and inflation over the last two years, bond funds have attracted record inflows and investors have profited immensely.<http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704530204576237182248727802.h…> *

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] “eG8 forum”: Governments and Corporations United to Control the Net

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Tue, May 24, 2011 at 2:49 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] “eG8 forum”: Governments and Corporations United to Control the Net To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: http://www.laquadrature.net/en/eg8-forum-governments-and-corporations-unite… “eG8 forum”: Governments and Corporations United to Control the Net *** Paris, May 24th, 2011 – The “eG8 forum” is a smokescreen behind which hides an alarming alliance of governments attempting to control the Internet and a few corporations making profits from restricting online freedoms [1]. *** Governmental attempts to control the Internet are multiplying in all geographical areas: the US Governments' reaction to Wikileaks and takedowns of domain names in the name of copyright; the Egyptian black-out of the Net; censorship of web content happening all over Europe; the talks of creating a “Great European firewall”, the ACTA agreement turning Internet service providers into a private copyright police, etc. At the same time, giant companies are increasingly developping business models based on restricting fundamental freedoms: Networks equipment vendors who sell the hardware that allow repressive regime across the world to censor their citizens' online communications; telecoms operators who try to take revenge on the universal Internet by attacking network neutrality; massive centralized online services that collect, agregate, sell and leak personnal data; entertainment industries who stubbornly fight the sharing of culture between individuals to force them into passive consumption. “Governments seem to have given up protecting citizens' rights against corporations engaging in noxious business. They have entered an alliance with some of these companies, united in the fear of the new capabilities afforded to individuals by the Internet and computers. The eG8 stages a show where a government living outside of the Internet civilization hopes to appear connected to it by being seen on photographs and TV with a few sectoral business leaders. It would only be pathetic if it wasn't the smokescreen for dangerous threats on citizens' freedoms and attempts to take over our beloved universal online space.” declares Jérémie Zimmermann, co-founder and spokesperson for the citizen organization La Quadrature du Net. * Références * 1. Every plenary and workshop at the “eG8 forum” is mostly filled with the event's corporate sponsors or officials from the French Government. The few folding chairs, hastily added for a few members of “the civil society”, will not fool anyone. ** About la Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that promotes the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. La Quadrature du Net is supported by French, European and international NGOs including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Open Society Institute and Privacy International. renew newcastle, urbanism as hacking
by Michel Bauwens 24 May '11

24 May '11

see: http://www.grist.org/cities/2011-05-23-cities-as-software-and-hacking-the-u… What if saving a rundown city wasn't about building expensive new infrastructure -- hardware, so to speak -- but instead reprogramming the existing infrastructure? Changing the software of the place? That's the analogy used by Marcus Westbury, founder of Renew Newcastle<http://renewnewcastle.org/about>, an innovative initiative that has breathed life into the vacant downtown of that Australian city. Newcastle, which grew up around the coal and steel industries, suffers from a lot of the same problems as Rust Belt cities in the United States. Its major employers shut down in the latter half of the 20th century, its transportation systems were dismantled, and retail decamped for the sprawling suburbs. The core of the city was vacant and neglected. But Renew Newcastle has turned that around by making it easy for entrepreneurs and artists to move into vacant spaces and make creative use of them. The result? Lonely Planet recently named it one of the top 10 cities to visit in 2011<http://www.smh.com.au/travel/traveller-tips/worlds-top-10-cities-for-2011-n…> . Here's an excerpt from an excellent piece by Westbury called "Cities as Software <http://www.marcuswestbury.net/2011/05/23/cities-as-software/>" (originally published in the Dutch architecture and design magazine *Volume<http://volumeproject.org/> *): [Y]ou need to start by rewriting -- or hacking -- the software to change not what the city *is* but how it *behaves* ... Renew Newcastle <http://www.renewnewcastle.org/>, the not-for-profit company that we established in late 2008, is a piece of software. It is a broker. It is an enabler. It is an interface between the aging, decaying, and at times boarded-up built environment and those who seek to use and activate it. It connects the many empty spaces in the city with the passion of people who want to experiment and try things in them. It has facilitated more than 60 projects in more than 30 once empty spaces in just over two years. It has done so without building, buying or owning anything other than some computers and some second hand furnishings. It does not fund things -- nor was it funded itself in its early stages -- it just allows them to happen. It has done so by changing the software of the city. Not in the slow and traditional way -- the hard way -- of seeking the political power to amend the rules, change the laws and rewrite the operating system. It has done so in an easier but less obvious way -- it has followed the path of least resistance. Rather than rewrite the operating system it has hacked it and made it work in new ways<http://techpresident.com/blog-entry/diy-urban-development-step-one-start-fa…> . Renew Newcastle started by hacking how much spaces cost and the terms they were available on. While there were over 150 empty buildings in Newcastle few if any of them were cheap or simple to access. They were bound up in complex rules -- from bad tax incentives to complex, costly and long-term commercial leases that made it difficult to access them flexibly. Renew Newcastle traded cost for security. We created new rules, new contracts, and convinced owners to make spaces available for what was effectively barter -- we would find people to clean them use them and clean them and activate them and they could have them back if and when they needed them. We stepped outside the default legal framework in which most property in Australia is managed and created a new one. We used licenses not leases, we asked for access not tenancy and exploited the loopholes those kinds of arrangements enabled. ... Yet cheap space is not in itself enough. It is not enough to simply change how much space costs, it is also vitally important to change how it behaves in the face of initiative. Renew Newcastle created a whole system to lower barriers to initiative and experimentation. We created another layer -- between the operating system and the users to make it simpler and easier to enable experimentation and risk. Again we followed the path of least resistance. We decided to make things simple that could be made simple and not butt up against what would remain impenetrably hard. We managed to do what is easy rather than get caught up in waiting for the ideal -- to find spaces that were usable and use them. Renew Newcastle designed systems -- an API in programming terms -- that made activation simple. We took spaces, brokered cheap access to them and gauged what could be done in them easily -- what they were already approved for -- and set out to find it and plant and water it. In doing so we effectively made a whole system to make space behave as quickly and responsively. To allow people with enthusiasm and passion to direct it into the city. We made it quick for people to try and cheap for them to fail. We removed capital and complexity from the equation and in doing so we seeded more than 60 experiments -- unleashing the energy of hundreds of people. We made the city work for people for whom it had not worked in a long time. People without capital for whom low barriers to entry and not certainty of outcome were the defining issues. Those who were operating digital cottage industries and Etsy stores, artists and fashion designers, bedroom record labels and Flickr photographers <http://renewnewcastle.org/projects>. In effect we made the physical space behave as their virtual spaces did -- easy to get into and out of, allowing of experimentation and failure and most importantly full of tools and structures and plugins designed to make it simple and cheap for them to do what they are passionate about. As cities age, the challenge is not always to rebuild them physically but to re-imagine how they might function and adapt. In Newcastle in many respects nothing has changed since 2008. The buildings are mostly the same. The hardware is unchanged. Nothing has been built. No government has fallen. No revolution has taken place. Yet, on another level much has changed -- dead parts of the city are active and vibrant, 60 projects have started, hundreds of new events have been created, and whole new communities are directly engaged in creating whatever it is that the city will become. The software -- the legal templates, the contracts and the thinking -- that has enabled has changed Newcastle is becoming a kind of shareware -- downloaded, hacked and implemented in cities and towns across Australia from Townsville<http://renewtownsville.wordpress.com/>to Adelaide <http://renewadelaide.wordpress.com/>. Similar nimble, flexible approaches to improving the urban environment are emerging all over the United States -- the Better Block<http://www.grist.org/article/2010-09-24-one-dallas-neighborhood-remakes-its…>projects that started in Dallas, the Park(ing) Day <http://www.grist.org/article/2010-09-16-parking-day-slideshow>movement, the Pavement to Parks<http://sf.streetsblog.org/2011/05/09/andres-power-helps-lead-a-streets-rena…>initiative in San Francisco. The new guide to Tactical Urbanism<http://www.grist.org/urbanism/tactical-urbanism-guide-for-guerrilla-urbanis…>is filled with examples, and there are more coming along all the time, many spearheaded by people in their 20s and 30s. Maybe a generation that has come of age in a digital world is fundamentally predisposed to seeing urban space as hackable. Sarah Goodyear is Grist’s cities editor. The $300 House project began as a challenge to businesses in a Harvard Business Review blog post by Dartmouth professor Vijay Govindarajan and co-author Christian Sarkar, an independent business consultant. The goal: to put decent housing within reach of the world's poorest 2 billion people. "We want designers and architects to see this as a business opportunity, not as a charity case study", says Govindarajan. "This design challenge will help us get some innovative people to focus on a vast un-served market waiting to be created across the world." Prizes worth a total of US$25,000 will be awarded to winners, including a two-week workshop to build prototypes of the houses, and to set up social ventures to manufacture and distribute them.
