relation between patterns in different fields?

any relation with Alexander's work? see: Patterns in Network Architecture From P2P Foundation Jump to: navigation<http://p2pfoundation.net/Patterns_in_Network_Architecture#mw-head>, search <http://p2pfoundation.net/Patterns_in_Network_Architecture#p-search> ** Book: Patterns in Network Architecture: A Return to Fundamentals, by John Day, ISBN-10: 0132252422, ISBN-13: 9780132252423, Prentice Hall, 2007.* URL = http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0132252422 [edit<http://p2pfoundation.net/Patterns_in_Network_Architecture?title=Patterns_in…> ] Review Jon Crowcroft: "It isn't every day (pun intended) that one of the true Old Guard writes and publishes a book, and it behooves us to take notice. In this case, the author's expertise and his subject matter are of particular timeliness, because of the worldwide resurgence of activities with regard to next-generation network architectures, that is, a replacement, or upgrade to the Internet (dare one say "Internet 2.0"?). John Day is a well-known scholar of historical cartography, and this book, in a way, is a roadmap of network architecture. The roadmap starts back in 1970, tracing from the roots of connectionless packet-switched dynamically routed systems such as Cyclades, and the ARPANET, through to recent discussions on multihoming, multicast, and mobility, with a view along the way of naming, addressing, protocol stack design, protocol design, and concepts of layering. That description makes the book sound fairly standard in terms of structure and content, but it isn't. The book includes many discursive elements whose intent is to provide a collection of patterns. Design patterns originated in the building trade as a way for crafts people to pass on successful methods of construction (in the sense of affordable and noncollapsing) to less-inventive people (or people who want to spend their inventive efforts in different areas). Software engineers picked up on this idea, applying the techniques in both the microscopic world: patterns allow you to decide what algorithm is applicable in solving a problem in the small; and the macroscopic world: architectural patterns allow you to decide on an approach to breaking down a large system into the right kind of components. Essentially, this book does the same thing, at the protocol stack level, and at the system level, with a collection of historical and contemporary examples to support the arguments. The book makes interesting reading, especially as it represents a fair balance in reporting the early ideas that came not just from the United States, and restates the importance of the Opens Systems Interconnection (OSI) model (not the ISO protocols) in understanding layering and beads-on-a-string, as well as reasserting the use of the model in clarifying the perennially confusing concepts of names, addresses, and routes. The book begins with a discussion of seven principles that emerged through the early history of networking (I won't spoil the book for readers by listing them here), and ends in the tenth and final chapter, entitled "Backing Out of a Blind Alley," with an appeal to fundamentals. Essentially, the author points out that researchers (especially academics) are strongly motivated to keep moving on with claims of ever-newer tricks, but rarely to consolidate these tricks into a set of principles that stand for a long time (because then they would have to completely change the topic of their research). Thus uncovering a foundational theory of networking would put a whole generation of networkers out of work (or funding at least). The book is peppered (saltily) with fine quotes and fascinating asides from philosophy (for this reader, especially, the Chinese diversions were most novel and illuminating). Illustrative of the range is that one finds Wittgenstein and Dave Clark, Confucius, and Dr. Seuss—Frege's useful reminder that "The sign '=' should be read as 'is easily confused with'" would make an excellent IETF T-shirt. I found the book extremely readable and enjoyable, and although I might argue with some of the opinions in the book, I think that this is just more evidence that I should recommend the book to anyone interested in knowing why we are where we are in networking, and being better informed about where we should go next." -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] G8: The Internet Take-Over Goes to Deauville

A club of corporation CEOs (Publicis, Facebook, Orange, Google) is going to Deauville, pretending to carry the message of the Internet to the heads of States. There is one answer to this take-over: the Internet is ours! *** Led by Maurice Levy of advertising giant Publicis [1], a bunch of CEOs [2] will present the eG8 conclusions to the G8 head of states, as 12,000 policemen make sure the voice of citizens and civil society do not reach the meeting room. Nevertheless, citizens were heard elsewhere: through the criticism on the Net, at the civil society press conference, and during some of the eG8 discussions, thanks to the few people rooted in the Internet that made it to the official event. “Barricaded in their golden room, the G8 governments and a select club of CEOs will reinforce the fictitious narrative in which they believe. They will consider the Internet from the angle of their business models or the preservation of their oligarchic power. In the process, they risk damaging the fabric of our freedoms and the essential tools of our future. During these two days, and afterwards, citizen voices must still be heard.” declares Philippe Aigrain, co-founder and strategy adviser for the citizen organization La Quadrature du Net. “These companies may control crucial parts of the infrastructure, they are still a minor part of the Internet. The Net, as a universal space that we love and share, is the sum of its users, who built it and make it grow. We all collectively own the Internet as a common good, and together we must make governments accountable for the protection of its openness as the basis for our freedoms." concludes Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson of the citizen organization. * Références * 1. Levy's contribution to Internet policy includes pushing the French government to cash on its immaterial capital by inserting ads on public information websites and promoting a purely economic view of the Internet. 2. Among them, Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt, Stéphane Richard (Orange). ** About la Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that promotes the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. Fwd: [Autonomo.us] Thoughts on Facebook
by Michel Bauwens 27 May '11

27 May '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Matt Lee <mattl(a)cnuk.org> Date: Fri, May 7, 2010 at 2:23 AM Subject: [Autonomo.us] Thoughts on Facebook To: discuss <discuss(a)lists.autonomo.us> ## Thoughts on Facebook This is meant as a design document, as well as a commentary on our views for the future goal of creating a distributed, free social network. Part of it is designed to answer questions about some of the existing work that FooCorp has been involved with, and some ideas for where we should head next, in order to achieve our goal. ### The problem Monolithic social networking sites are, in our opinion, bad -- bad for privacy, bad for user freedom, bad for autonomy. People ought to be able to have better control over their private information, people ought to be able to see how the software that uses their data works (and change it) and people ought to be able to use social software to communicate without the need for third-party services, hungry for advertising revenue. Therefore, we believe a solution to these things has these three steps: * Tools which are easy for the typical user to understand and control. * Tools which are easy for novice programmers to comprehend and modify. * Tools which are secure, yet easily installed and upgraded by novices. We don't believe the answer to this problem exists in a product or service, but rather in a collection of products and services, created by the free software community, on top of existing free software platforms. A free software solution would adhere to a simple, but common protocol, allowing the very basic social networking archetypes to be expressed, without hindering progress of development of other features or enhancements. For some time now, we have been investigating free service development, and understanding the desires for the creation of social software. These are our conclusions: * While most people want something browser based, a protocol needs to be developed that permits desktop clients as well. * The protocol should work over HTTP. * The current state of low-cost web hosting makes PHP and MySQL the clear contenders as the development platform of choice, much to the chagrin of some. * A testbed application needs to be created for people to see how the protocol should function. With that, we present our vision for GNU social. ### GNU social GNU social is a project to create social software in the GNU project, as part of the GNU operating system. GNU social should not be a replacement for Facebook, and GNU social should not be in the business of creating user facing software. There are plenty of smart people who are already building cool autonomous projects, like StatusNet, which took microblogging to the next level, Filmaster, providing a highly polished social reviewing site, and our own GNU FM project that thanks to the efforts of some other smart folks, powers Libre.fm, our free music service. In addition, there are numerous upcoming projects, all hoping to shine through with their own solution for the decentralized social networking problem, the latest of which Diaspora, appears to be making great waves of progress of its own. Instead, we propose GNU social as something different to all these projects, and something common to them all as well. GNU social should instead lead on the creation of the glue that ties these projects together, as well as a simple, functional example of a basic social networking site, intended as a demonstration and proof of concept, not a contender in its own right. The initial work of the GNU social project should therefore be the development of a simple social networking protocol, agreed on by the other players in this space, simultaneously with the creation of the proof of concept, followed by sustained advocacy of the GNU social concept to other free software projects, and the creation of new social tools, both browser and desktop clients. What does the protocol look like? We'll be working with some of the best people out there in the free software and social web communities to bring you that answer. freenet : p2pf archives

A suggestion - Whoever can do this most easily... ? : put / connect all available copied data of p2pfoundation archives on freenet ( the wiki, blog, etc ) http://freenetproject.org/ Or is it already done ? ( I did not check / need to re-download a copy of freenet ) If not, let me know what I can do, or assist with, as I would hope there are much more technically qualified persons then me, and/or better positioned persons regarding copies of easily retrievable data. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freenet " Freenet works by pooling<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pooling_(resource_management)> the contributed bandwidth <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwidth_(computing)> and storage space of member computers to allow users to anonymously publish or retrieve various kinds of information. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] please help us promote Tor and online anonymity

hi chris, can you also publish this on the regular blog? many thanks!! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <katitza(a)datos-personales.org> Date: Fri, May 27, 2011 at 5:54 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] please help us promote Tor and online anonymity To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Cc: rainey(a)eff.org, eva(a)eff.org Hi friends, EFF is about to roll out a campaign to encourage organizations and individuals to run Tor relays. For those of you that don't know, Tor is software and a network of volunteers worldwide that help people be anonymous online by masking IP addresses. Individuals (like many bloggers in authoritarian regimes) need the Tor network to communicate safely. Unfortunately, the people who need Tor the most are often not in a position to run Tor relays and contribute to the Tor network. Those of us who care deeply about online privacy can make a tangible impact by participating in the Tor network. EFF is reaching out to privacy and free speech organizations and asking them to join us in helping to grow the Tor network. We're hoping that by working together as a movement, we can make a significant impact in the size of the Tor network - and help people worldwide safeguard their online privacy. To participate, organizations need to set up a Tor relay. All relays count, including exit nodes, bridges and middle nodes. EFF has created an instructional video on setting up a Tor relay and we're updating our legal FAQ to provide a more detailed analysis about how U.S. law applies to Tor. Check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jmj4bILqiY Organizations that participate in our challenge will be thanked on our social media accounts and promoted on our website. We are emailing you now because we'd like to give the human rights community a head-start. It's our hope that when we roll out this campaign next week, the initial participants will be the many organizations in the human rights community who are working hard to defend human rights on the Internet. Please contact Rainey Reitman, EFF Activism Director (rainey(a)eff.org) and Eva Galperin (eva(a)eff.org) about this campaign and please do not hesitate to ask her any questions about the campaign. And, please do not promote this campaign out of this list until we launch next week.
