Seems like they have been coordinating this with the police. Scary precedent. Join the protest against it... on facebook http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_182031188514672#!/home.php?sk=gro… greets, M Stop the facebookpurge! We demand the reinstatement of all the political Facebook accounts blocked in the run-up to the royal wedding, and that Facebook release an official apology to all those affected. As the media gather to celebrate the nuptials of our aristo overlords and the police pre-emptively cleanse London, making arrests under the new unpublicised thought crime ‘suspicion of being an anarchist’, Facebook has joined in the crackdown by blocking political accounts. The following accounts have been blocked in the 12 hours leading up to the royal wedding: Open Birkbeck UWE Occupation Chesterfield Stopthecuts Camberwell AntiCuts IVA Womensrevolution Tower Hamlets Greens No Cuts ArtsAgainst Cuts London Student Assembly Beat’n Streets Roscoe ‘Manchester’ Occupation Bristol Bookfair Newcastle Occupation Socialist Unity Whospeaks Forus Ourland FreeLand Bristol Ukuncut Teampalestina Shaf Notts-Uncut Part-of UKUncut No Quarter Cutthewar Bootle Labour Claimants Fightback Ecosocialists Unite Comrade George Orwell Jason Derrick Anarchista Rebellionist BigSociety Leeds Slade Occupation Anti-Cuts Across Wigan Firstof Mayband Don’t Break Britain United Cockneyreject SWP Cork Westiminster Trades Council York Anarchists Rock War Sheffield Occupation Central London SWP North London Solidarity Southwark Sos Save NHS Rochdale Law Centre Goldsmiths Fights Back The Facebook statement of rights and responsibilities reveals that the threat of deletion is constantly hovering over the heads of anyone who dares to participate in social media without fully revealing their identity – “use of a fake name” is among the violations that can lead to accounts being deleted – but it is clear that this recent wave of shutdowns is politically motivated, part of a network of repression designed to stifle protest. Unfortunately, should you take issue with Facebook’s corporate policies, all grievances must according to our tacit agreement be pursued through California law courts (see FB statement of rights). As total transparency is demanded of us through our participation in social media, the people who dictate its terms hide behind legal firewalls. The mainstream media has celebrated how protestors in the Middle East have used social media to organise revolution – now let’s see if the same pundits who were excited by Tahrir on Twitter speak up to defend UK-based activists who are now to be barred from organising and discussing via supposedly liberatory social media mechanisms. Please join our Facebook group to protest the purge: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_182031188514672#!/home.php?sk=gro… # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mx.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime(a)kein.org -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Marcin Jakubowski <opensourceecology(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 4:15 PM Subject: Re: Summer of Open Hardware Friends, I would like to chime in by saying that we'll be holding our first major Factor e Farm Convergence (Kansas City Area) on September 1-30 to make major strides on the ground with respect to the Global Vilage Construction Set (GVCS) development. This will be like Foo Camp<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo_Camp>, except longer, and focused towards on-the-ground prototyping, development, and documentation of the GVCS, by invitation only. It will be an Apollo Program for the GVCS. Contact me if you're interested in the development - building, prototyping, documentation, and other work. You will be expected to lead the development of your proposed project during the Convergence. Our goal is to prototype at least 10 of the 50 GVCS machines<http://opensourceecology.org.nyud.net/gvcs.php>, including supporting hardware such as modern steam engines, stepper motors, hydraulic motors, and electrical generators. We expect at least a $100k budget available for this, via Kickstarter and other crowd funding initiatives in development. So come to see the tractors rumble, torch tables fire, and solar collectors electrify. This will be an unprecedented sociotechnological phenomenon, dedicated to pushing the open source movement forward and to developing a solid platform for Distributive Enterprise<http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/Distributive_Enterprise>. We are looking for everyone from CAD, design, fabrication, prototyping, videography, natural building, energy, transportation, technical writing, graphics and design, media, systems egineering, and other subject matter experts - all the infrastrcture that takes our prototypes to Full Product Release. Read our Crash Course <http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/Crash_Course >and Blog <http://openfarmtech.org/weblog/> to see our present status. We are expecting about 100 people to converge, and we expect a merry and productive time with participants from all over the globe. See my related TED Talk <http://www.ted.com/talks/marcin_jakubowski.html>, and print our new Brochure<http://openfarmtech.org/weblog/2011/04/ose-trifold-brochure/>to give to your friends. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bob Mcchesney <rwmcchesney(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, May 1, 2011 at 9:37 PM Subject: Will the Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights To: "rwmcches-illinois.edu" <rwmcches(a)illinois.edu> Dear Friend, Acquaintance, Relative, or Person-who-somehow-ended-up in my address book, I am writing to you to announce the publication by The New Press of a brand new book I co-edited with Victor Pickard, *Will the Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights: The Collapse of Journalism and What Can Be Done to Fix It*. The book includes 32 new essays on the crisis of journalism in the United States, written by leading scholars, journalists, activists and policymakers. The essays cover a broad range of approaches to the topic and viewpoints and offer an equally broad range of prospective solutions. The pieces are all written since 2008 and mostly in 2010, and include considerable ground-breaking research and analysis. A few were published in magazines or journals, but most were commissioned and written specifically for this volume. I have three essays in the book, two I wrote with John Nichols, and another, on Walter Lippmann, I wrote specifically for this book. We have put together a Hall of Fame line-up. Since many of them are terrific writers, the book is a great read. The contributors include (in alphabetical order): Craig Aaron * Bruce Ackerman * Eric Alterman * C. Edwin Baker * Yochai Benkler * Rodney Benson * Frank Blethen * Ryan Blethen * Jessica Clark * Mark Cooper * FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps * Geoffrey Cowan * Michael X. Delli Carpini * Leonard Downie, Jr. * Thomas Frank * Todd Gitlin * Juan Gonzalez * James T. Hamilton * Chris Hedges * Janine Jackson * Robert W. McChesney * Laura McGann * Pamela Newkirk * John Nichols * Victor Pickard * Shawn Powers * Michael Schudson * Clay Shirky * David Simon * Paul Starr * Joseph Torres * Nikki Usher * Tracy Van Slyke * Matt Welch * David Westphal * Bruce A. Williams The New Press is a non-profit publisher in every sense of the term, so I am assisting their publicity efforts by sending this email to you. If this does not interest you, I apologize for the nuisance. The first wave of reviews is already in. *Booklist* wrote: “This provocative compilation provides a groundbreaking introduction to, and thought-provoking evaluation of, the uncertain state of contemporary journalism. Bold, meditative, engrossing, this is an indispensable guide for followers of modern media.” The *Library Journal* concluded: “Anyone concerned with the state of journalism and the state of the union should read this thought-provoking book.” If you are interested in purchasing the book, please consider supporting your local independent bookstore. In Madison, I support Rainbow Bookstore. http://www.rainbowbookstore.org/ Here are links to two online sellers, which have more information on the book as well: http://www.amazon.com/Will-Last-Reporter-Please-Lights/dp/1595585486 http://www.powells.com/biblio/62-9781595585486-0 If you are concerned about the crisis in journalism, I think you will find this book a must-read. Thanks for your time, Bob McChesney PS--My dear friend and frequent co-author John Nichols has a new book out from Verso called* The S Word: A Short History of an American Tradition….Socialism*. It is a fantastic book that has received rave reviews. Everyone I know who has picked up a copy has read it virtually in one sitting it was so engrossing. That was my experience, too. Because John has been so busy covering the Wisconsin 2011 uprising, he has not has the opportunity to do the promotional work this book richly deserves. http://www.amazon.com/Word-Short-History-American-Tradition-Socialism/dp/18… http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9781844676798-1 -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
