Fwd: On harping on, growing wings and Systems Thinking
by Michel Bauwens 19 May '11

19 May '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Michelle Smith <admin(a)triarchypress.com> Date: Thu, May 19, 2011 at 7:51 PM Subject: On harping on, growing wings and Systems Thinking To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Dear Michel, The fifth of Peter Senge's disciplines was Systems Thinking. (I know you knew that). They say *The Fifth Discipline* sold more than a million copies. Triarchy authors John Seddon, Russ Ackoff, Bill Tate, Sally Bibb and Graham Leicester all harp on about Systems Thinking. *(Phrasal credentials: Shakespeare used the expression 'harp on' in Hamlet.)* The result? A lot of people know Systems Thinking is a good thing but not many actually know how to *do* it. Which may be why we often get asked to recommend a *practical guide* to Systems Thinking. Now we can. Rosalind Armson is a respected and experienced teacher of Systems Thinking. In her new book, *Growing Wings on the Way: Systems Thinking in Messy Situations*<http://www.triarchypress.com/pages/Growing_Wings_on_the_Way.htm>, she weaves together the professional and the personal benefits of being able to 'systems think' with her own case studies. Then she sets out the techniques that work best in approaching 'messes' (with rules and practical advice on each one): - Escaping Mental Traps *(History, Habit and Action Traps, Double Binds, Value Rigidity)* - Diagnosing with Multiple-Cause Diagrams - Drawing and using Rich Pictures and Influence Diagrams - Understanding messes with Systems Maps - Building Human-Activity System Diagrams - The 5Es (Efficacy, Efficiency, Effectiveness, Elegance, Ethics) - Viewing messes through an Understandascope If you've ever had to face a mess (from running a national health service to a departmental reorganisation, a company merger or caring for your elderly mother) this book has everything you need to unravel it. Whether you’re new to Systems Thinking or an old hand, the book helps you work with your own messy situations. It’s aimed at managers, team leaders, strategists, policy makers, students and people with mothers. *Growing Wings* is published this month. Order a copy now and save £5.<http://www.triarchypress.com/pages/Growing_Wings_on_the_Way.htm> Thanks for reading, Michelle Smith PS The title? In *Catch-22 *Yossarian says, *"*We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down". This book says we can acquire Systems Thinking skills best by actually *using* them. ========== *About Triarchy Press* Triarchy Press <http://www.triarchypress.co.uk/pages/triarchy.htm> is an independent publisher of books about organisations (and how they work) and about thinking (and how we do it). admin(a)triarchypress.com ~ www.triarchypress.com * <http://www.triarchypress.com/pages/Growing_Wings_on_the_Way.htm>** * *“**A Systems Thinking primer! This easy-to-read book makes systems theory accessible to those who do not have time for intensive study but need help in structuring and solving complex problems… A resource masterpiece!”* *Mike Haynes, Consultant * Rosalind Armson was, until last month, Senior Lecturer in Systems at the Open University. She has had a key role in Systems teaching and research in the UK and internationally and is widely respected for her grasp of the subject and her ability to communicate it. As an independent consultant she has worked with banks, development agencies, energy providers, the voluntary sector, governments, health-care practitioners and many others. She has delivered Systems Thinking workshops in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, South Africa and Europe. *Growing Wings* is published this month. Dear Hazel, at the bottom of your book review, here at http://www.ethicalmarkets.com/2011/03/29/consumptionomics-by-chandran-nair-… you write: <This alone should release Asian policymakers to go full steam ahead with their own resource-conserving, labor-intensive, green economy plans, as China, Korea, India, Singapore and other countries are pioneering. This book will hopefully spark a wide debate on the future development paths for our common future on this small planet.> can you point our readers to any summary article that reviews such policies? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hazel Henderson <admin(a)hazelhenderson.com> Date: Thu, May 19, 2011 at 9:33 PM Subject: Hazel Henderson and Ethical Markets May 2011 Update To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Dear Advisors and Colleagues, We are happy to announce that Ethical Markets Media has been elected to help spearhead the Green Economy Coalition<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>, a worldwide group including WWF, IUCN, Global Footprint, TEEB and other path-breaking groups who are supporting the "Green New Deal," the Green Economy Initiative (see keynote address<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>) launched and supported by UN agencies, including UNEP<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>, UNDP, ILO and the Rio+20 conference to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2012. We invite you all to join in this global effort which is helping break many climate change log-jams by supporting the private investors since 2007 who have already invested over $2 trillion in growing low-carbon green economies. Watch our Green Transition Scoreboard® (GTS) at www.greentransitionscoreboard.com<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>and our daily news of additional public and private progress on our pages: Green Prosperity Funds, Energy Efficiency, GreenTech and Sustainability News. We agree with the new summaries for policymakers from UNFCCC<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>, WMO <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>and IPCC <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>that much progress on climate change can come from the transition to renewable energy and focusing on curbing regional emissions of soot (black carbon), methane, VOCs and ozone. These newer policies can improve human health directly while pollution can be reduced rapidly and less expensively in many localities! Ellen Brown, Ethical Markets advisory board member, launched the Public Banking Institute<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>(PBI), a non-partisan think-tank, research and advisory organization dedicated to developing publicly-owned banks at all levels -- local, regional, state, national and international. Public banks<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>have played a historic role in fostering access to cheap and readily available credit for governments, businesses and individuals. PBI members include past and present community and civic leaders, businesspeople, educators, political economists, writers and banking professionals. The group shares a concern over the destabilizing actions of a private banking industry that, through its corporate business model, has precipitated the economic imbalances now witnessed across the US economy. I am honored to serve on Ellen's PBI advisory board. Welcome new advisors! A special welcome to veteran financial journalist Ellie Winninghoff (see "Broadening Fiduciary Duty<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…>" and "New Tools for Investing<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=ezgbu6dab&et=1105589606099&s=3028&e=001b1ZQUt…> "). Fwd: [fcf_discussion] "eG8 Forum": A Smokescreen For Governmental Control Of The Net
by Michel Bauwens 18 May '11

18 May '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Wed, May 18, 2011 at 11:00 PM Subject: [fcf_discussion] "eG8 Forum": A Smokescreen For Governmental Control Of The Net To: fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: http://www.laquadrature.net/en/eg8-forum-a-smokescreen-for-governmental-con… "eG8 Forum": A Smokescreen For Governmental Control Of The Net *** Paris, May 17th, 2011 - Next week, Nicolas Sarkozy will be convening the “eG8 forum”, just two days ahead of a G8 summit that will focus on Internet policy. Disguised as a pseudo-consultative process, this staged show could mask the actual will of governments to increase state control over the Internet. Beyond the smokescreen of the “forum”, citizens must hold world leaders accountable for their actions, and denounce the numerous ongoing attempts at undermining our freedoms online. *** La Quadrature du Net, along with several artist and citizen organizations, calls on everyone to participate in creative action at http://g8internet.com . One of the biggest advertising agencies in the world, Publicis, has been appointed by Nicolas Sarkozy to organize the “eG8 forum”, which will gather an impressive cast of business actors to discuss the future of the Internet economy. In fact, Sarkozy has stated for months his intention to use his presidency of the G8 to impose his concept of a “civilized Internet”. This notion, borrowed from the Chinese government, is in line with Sarkozy's record on Internet policy [1]. Last year on the international stage, Sarkozy also tried to impose the idea of nation-state control over the network's architecture, playing down the importance of the Internet for freedom of communication and democracy worldwide [2]. Recent events worldwide suggest that such an approach is gaining momentum internationally. The Internet black-out in Egypt, the US government's reaction to WikiLeaks [3], the ACTA agreement that will be signed during the G8, the adoption of website blocking mechanisms and talks about a “Virtual Schengen border” [4] in Europe, or plans for “Internet Kill Switches” are some of the numerous examples of governments trying to take over the Internet and its governance [5]. Citizens must react by holding their governments accountable and ensure that the Internet remains our most precious tool for improving societies. “In spite of a harmless-sounding rhetoric, the 'eG8 forum' is a smokescreen to cover the increased control of governments over the Internet. It is a crucial moment in history when citizens have to mobilize to remain in control of an open and universal Internet. Attempts to turn the Net into a tool of repression and control must be opposed through every available mean of expression and creation.” concludes Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson for citizen advocacy group La Quadrature du Net. ** La Quadrature du Net, along with several artist and citizen organizations, calls on everyone to participate in creative action at http://g8internet.com. ** * Références * 1. In France, Sarkozy has already imposed the cutoff of citizens from the Internet, and censorship of online content. His Minister for the Digital Economy has called for banning WikiLeaks hosting on the French territory, because it didn't fit within this notion of a “civilized Internet”. 2. Other examples include the new version of the COICA bill and the seizure of domain names by the US, etc. ** About la Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that promotes the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. La Quadrature du Net is supported by French, European and international NGOs including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Open Society Institute and Privacy International. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dmytri Kleiner/ Friends. <dk(a)telekommunisten.net> Date: Mon, May 16, 2011 at 2:40 PM Subject: Two New Articles on Capitalism To: "Dmytri Kleiner/ Friends. Subscriber" <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> (Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions, is located at the end of this message.) __ Hello All, just a quick update to pass on two new articles on Capitalism. # Capital Doesn't Automate, It Entangles! # One is about the prospect of automation leading to increased leisure under Capitalism: "Rather than a future characterized by gleaming fully automated robot factories producing untold wealth while humans enjoy a life of leisure and pursuit of higher consciousness, a more realistic vision of capitalist automation is the panicked teenager frantically responding to various beeps and buzzers and flashing lights in the kitchen of a fast-food restaurant." ### --> http://j.mp/capital-entangles # Insurgent Finance! # The other is about the prospect of a junk bond financed insurgent Venture Communism: "Milken believed that he was a liberator that broke open the Capitalist vaults, getting Capital in the hands of a new generation of businesses that would otherwise have been shut out by the conservative old elite. In some sense that is true. Milken helped fuel the rise of many insurgents into a previously well-heeled old guard, notably himself and the likes of Rupert Murdoch." ### --> http://j.mp/insurgent-finance Comments and feedback welcome as always.
