structured mapping of real p2p internet infrastructure

RS: structured mapping of real p2p internet infrastructure<http://groups.google.com/group/openmanufacturing/t/50f49ae67c75b034> Giovanni Lostumbo <giovanni.lostumbo(a)gmail.com> Jan 09 08:39AM -0600 ^<?ui=2&view=bsp&ver=ohhl4rw8mbn4#12d6fbc88b29d451_digest_top> Hello, As there are many ways do map an infrastructure, one idea I've thought about was having all p2p software and operating system package either pre-installed on a computer and/or available on a GNU GPL distro (like or using aspects of GNUnet). The attached illustration is based on a partial-mesh topology 3 links/node in a 9 computer network (I merely included duplicate software lists at each PC to illustrate the example of modular and compatible PCs in any network). This could be scaled up, but might need a different software that can readily adapt to different topologies. Giovanni Lostumbo Giovanni Lostumbo <giovanni.lostumbo(a)gmail.com> Jan 09 03:36PM -0600 ^<?ui=2&view=bsp&ver=ohhl4rw8mbn4#12d6fbc88b29d451_digest_top> Also, typo in the previous: XMPP instead of XMMP. Additionally, Thunderbird/Evolution Mail clients could be included too. I am replacing 802.11s with Ronja to consider health issues. All parts should be modular, anyways. Platform compatibilities is of course the issue to discuss. http://p2pfoundation.ning.com/forum/topics/ronja-open-source-lineofsight?xg… My idea is to follow the evolution of the widest fields of the internet, for some of the latest technologies and to map them to combine it for new functions (See attachment called p2p convergence- on the right panel). The idea is inspired by Carl Woese's term, "innovation sharing protocols" http://arxiv.org/abs/q-bio/0605036 and his idea of a "denim fence" "model" of evolution as in the attached illustration Two of the latest developments in the fields of HDD storage capacity and microprocessors of last year are the advancing beyond the 2.19Terabyte limit: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2373917,00.asp (though using 64-bit OSs, GPT, and UEFI are part of newer platform requirements that do this by default) And and recent developments in the Einstein-Bose condensate: http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/11/26/2059208/German-Scientists-Create…<http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/11/26/2059208/German-Scientists-Create…> may extend Moore's Law further into the future), then it is possible to combine these technologies to do much more as a client than a server would typically do. A third example of this is less of a breakthrough, but a more applicable technology and rather a sequential development in consumer microprocessing capabilities, is AMD's 16 core Bulldozer and Intel's SandyBridge 16threaded 8core chips being released in 2011. So, some of the obstacles here are both ideological and technological. Some technologies available can reproduce the internet as Fidonet, but the needs/wants of today's users either depend on or prefer heavy bandwidth for streaming/intensive processing needs. Some p2p software, as Simon at computerworldUk says, "The field is immature, but there are exciting experiments in progress." Looking at the bottlenecks of current technologies and documenting what is needed for the "minimal infrastructure" is an exciting forefront. By combining some of these technologies, it may be possible to address problems such as Wikipedia's storage needs (mentioned recently, if someone can provide a link?), and having p2p versions of those servers. The same could follow for Sourceforge.net. A theory I'm considering here is, if the some data needs of Wikipedia or other large site such as Amazon/online store increase linearly, and certain breakthroughs in harddrive capacity such as the link above extend consumer storage capabilities exponentially (e.g Multi-layer cells/3D disk writing), then as some next gen technologies physically "shrink", it may be possible to transmit enough internet application data through 1Gb or 10Gbps^n fibreoptics wires, or wireless mesh protocols such as Ronja. If tomorrow's off-the-shelf computers can handle the needs of today's mega server farms, it's possible that the exponential increases in multi-core computers with enough storage will be able to manage the needs of a real p2p infrastructure's most commonly used web applications. Trends in server architecture include low-power, high density processors: 512 Intel atom chips running at less than 2Kwh: http://www.anandtech.com/print/3768/ And potentially, ARM microprocessors applied to this technique, or Intel Chips that run at 1-100mw per core. and are stacked similarly to SeaMicro's setup. Thus, in the future, converging these trends, as an estimate, it's possible a consumer desktop would run at less than 1 watt- use 48 cores, using 2mw each, and can handle massively parallel p2p internet storage compression and decompression (or RAW uncompressed data functions) with up to 18 exabytes of storage capacity using 64-bit processors and the accompanying RAM possible (16 Exabytes). But in the near-term, it may be possible to do that with: Using an 8 or 16 core Zambezi/Bulldozer chip would allow faster decompression and compressions of .rar/.zip ,etc files of p2p Wikipedia discussion/page edits and transmitted across networks, addressing bottlenecks of bandwidth however possible. This isn't an advertisement- just an academic exercise in alternative network infrastructure theories. We use the term 'connectivism<http://www.itdl.org/Journal/Jan_05/article01.htm>' to describe a network-based pedagogy. The course itself uses connectivist principles and is therefore an instantiation of the philosophy of teaching and learning we both espouse.* *If you're interested, you can register here:http://cck11.mooc.ca The course is a MOOC -- a massive open online course. As for social (and individual) bookmarks, this is also something I am clearly at my limits with and would like to find a better solution. Diigo is great but I understand you can only watch those annotations etc. if you see the same page through diigo? And how does it work if you are looking in bookmarks by topic, by name, or by country, etc.? pearltrees are indeed very beautiful and the way I'd like to see info structured! they're not usable yet though? Is this a general need? I think tav's new application is going this way, but I am not sure it would be simple to use... Shareable's call for submissions
by Neal Gorenflo 09 Jan '11

09 Jan '11

Dear Commoners & P2P community, Below my signature is Shareable's call for pitches and submissions to an anthology we're putting together that's a how-to survive by sharing and making handbook for Gen-Y. We imagine an anthology written by Gen-Y for Gen-Y. Much has been written about this generation, but we want to give them a chance to tell their story, and to help their peers re-imagine the present and future as an opportunity for vastly more meaningful and constructive lives and world that what they may think lies before them. It will be a combination of analysis and how-to. Please forward this call to other individuals and forums. And we welcome your feedback and suggestions about our call. Thank you, Neal Gorenflo Publisher, Shareable.net -- Share or Die, Youth in Recession Call for Submissions: http://www.shareable.net/blog/share-or-die-youth-in-recession-call-for-subm… Contemporary American 20-somethings face a disorienting set of conditions. While only a few years ago pundits worried about the “me” generation, children raised in material abundance and cultural vacuity, even college-educated young people have come to face to face with hardship: - 85 percent of graduates move home with their parents (Twentysomething Inc.) - Official unemployment - a notoriously underestimating measure of a population’s immiseration hovers around 15 percent for young Americans, one-third higher than the overall population’s rate. (Bureau of Labor Statistics) - Self-employment, which is almost always precarious, shot up 27 percent between 1995 and 2005. With employers hiring fewer and fewer new employees, long-term secure employment is unrealistic for many young people. (BLS) - Youth has become such a material hardships that, for the first time ever, today’s college graduates face the same level of unemployment as the general population. (BLS) Just when young Americans seem to need advice the most, the older generation is least able to provide it. Having lived through post-World War II prosperity, most middle-aged parents have never experienced a job market this bad. For this generation of young adults - “Y” or “millennial” or what have you - the future is hazy and the present isn’t much clearer. At the same time, America’s young adults are well-educated and resourceful. They have spear-headed the rise of online communications technology, and lines of commonality that seemed impossible to draw a generation ago are only a click away. For all the drawbacks of social media (and it certainly has its share), it is a powerful force and a resource an otherwise poor generation can largely call its own. The current crisis presents a series of opportunities to break with what’s broken and build communities that are more self-reliant, sustainable, and democratic. We’re in the midst of a forced redefinition of our values, where “the good life” will be more about relationships and experiences than possessions and titles. A confluence of economic and social factors have composed a generation we do not understand - thus the now-iconic NY Times Magazine headline “What Is It About 20-Somethings?” Traditional forms of social organization (at the workplace, young nuclear families) are on the decline, while new forms develop in their wake. This shift presents a host of hardships, but an equal number of possibilities for young people to change the world we have been given. Its with all this in mind that we begin the Share Or Die project. Over the next few months, I will be collecting and editing an eBook about youth in recession for Shareable, and I need your help. Just as no one person experiences as a generation, no one person could write this collection. Rather than keep to the circle of established professional writers (a category that includes few young people), we decided to present an open call to our readers and their wider communities. Here’s what we’re looking for: Stories from the front lines: What is it like to try and get by in America as a young person these days? What is it like to try and do more? We’re not looking for simple stories of triumph or catastrophe, but productive struggle. There may not be easy solutions, but there are tactics and strategies, and we want to hear yours. These can be advice from experience (e.g. “What not to do as a freelancer”) or stories without an easy lesson. DIY How-to’s: If we can’t afford to buy stuff, we’re going to have to do a lot more making, repairing, and sharing. Share Or Die is supposed to be a useful guide for young people, so this section is going to be the core of the collection. These are practical tutorials, but they can be as material as building a backyard herb garden or as immaterial as starting a band. We’re concerned with the big stuff here: housing, transportation, food, relationships, non-traditional forms of work, travel, that kind of thing. Analysis: Young people get our lives explained to us by a lot of publications, now it’s our turn. How are we to understand our generational situation, and how can we use our common resources to improve it? We’re looking for ideas outside the traditional government-non-profit axis and beyond any partisan program. Possible topics include: youth and technology, common space, sharing and property, the contemporary workplace. Art: Although it’s a prose-centric project, Share Or Die would be incomplete without art. We’re hoping to include some cartoons, graphic art, and illustrations that address the above themes. We’ll look at graphics with or without pieces of writing, but combined is probably best. If you’re an artist or graphic designer interested in working on the project but without any particular idea, send some samples of your work anyway and we’ll see what we can think up. Cool (and relevant) data visualizations are especially welcome. We’ll be accepting pitches and completed pieces (1,000-3,000 words) during the month of January. Writers and artists from traditionally underrepresented communities are particularly encouraged to submit. Although youth is a perspective rather than a number, we’re predominantly trying to showcase writers in their twenties; old people with lots of great ideas about how young people should live are discouraged from submitting. We’ll be paying for selected pieces at average non-profit publication rates - not mind-blowing, but we know even writers and designers need to eat every once in a while. For legal reasons, we can’t accept already published material unless it was published under an open license (e.g. Creative Commons). Send questions as well as submissions and pitches, along with links to a sample or two and your online presence in any and all public forms you choose (Twitter, blog, tumblr, etc.) to malcolm(a)shareable.net.

The FTA courses are designed for a online / distance education methodology mainly with course books and a series of group and individual activities under guidance of a university mentor. That said, the courses can be taught face2face as well, and some universities are doing that: they just download or link to the FTA course book(s) and work through them in a physical class room. To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> facebook Hi Michel, Chris Cook commented on your link. Chris wrote: "This is down the same road as Peter Barnes 'Capitalism 3.0' I think, and if so is flawed IMHO by the legal concept of Trusteeship, which was invented by lawyers (and FOR lawyers). Trusteeship is based upon the positive control of a 'Trustee' on behalf of a ' Beneficiary', and one of the key problems is that in order to actually DO anything with assets held in trust it is necessary to employ managers as agents, whose interests are conflicted with those of both trustee and beneficiary. This intractable principal/agency conflict also applies to all Companies, whether or not operating 'For Profit'. It also applies to States/ Public Sector organisations. The P2P architecture I advocate is based not upon ACTIVE control of assets, but passive custody where the custodian has negative rights of control. ie he may say what may NOT be done rather than what SHALL be done with productive assets. The use of such custodians is already routine in the financial system. Virtually all institutional share trading takes place in respect not of the shares, but of the economic interests in the shares which are immobilised in the hands of a custodian. So it must be IMHO in order to achieve a practical real world P2P system, where undated credits in respect of the use value of productive assets (eg rental value, energy value and intellectual value) hldl in custody may be exchanged within a suitable framework of trust."
