Hi Roberto, my question is the following: is low power FM compatible with the internet, i.e. is it possible for local communities to use both interchangeably and with compatibility? (on other lists, we are working with sepp and douglas rushkoff and others, to create a mapping of available technologies, so that local communities can choose their own 'independent internet' infrastructures) for me by the way, the globalization is a plus, i.e. globa-local communication is superior to local communication only and the emancipatory possibilities of the internet are located in this combined effect; globally organized forces (MNO's, global financial markets) can outcompete/outcooperate local only forces, but globa-local forces can outcooperate global forces, i.e. it is te combination of relocalization with global cooperation that puts peer producers on a par with the global forces of capitalism, instead of the situation ex ante, where that possibility did not exist. In other words, the internet has rendered the current globalized infrastructure of capitalism essentially obsolete, and we no longer need MNO's and global financial markets (of course, we have to 'make' them disappear, the process won't be automatic) I would be totally opposed to charging per distance, which would again favour the old forces and take away our right to global communication, and free communication belongs to the great rights of humankind, along with free education and free medicine (and hold your horses, we can find ways to do this sustainably, free in this context means, 'as a public service' available to all) Michel On Mon, Jan 10, 2011 at 10:33 PM, Roberto Verzola <rverzola(a)gn.apc.org>wrote: > Hi Michel, > > 1) the internet is multi-lingual and can be used as a counter-force to >> anglo-saxon language domination (the stress by david de ugarte and >> lasindias.net <http://lasindias.net> on language-based phyles) >> > > Indeed, the Internet looks multi-lingual. An additional point might be that the old 19th and 20th century forms of protest are themselves increasingly obsolete in the face of the Spectacle, of the most modern organization of capitalist life. The networks of Nowtopians, while real and vital and a place I put a lot of hope too, have not yet found (perhaps for not trying, not sure) a public political voice that presents the new way of life in opposition to the maintenance of the status quo–a status quo that is so patently brutal and stupid, that it is hard to believe anyone still defends it! Anyway, many thanks for your rejoinder. I don’t know if the protests and movements in Europe, South America, and east Asia are harbingers of a real transformation, or historically familiar political expressions that will be subsumed by the dominant logic of markets and money, as so many of the prior movements and revolts have been. Clearly we all have to ponder how to shape together a real global alternative to the barbarism that is still “winning,” and I would love to see mass revolts in Europe or South America point the way to an ecologically sane, materially sound, psychologically rich life for everyone… Here’s to a new year and a new decade, full of hope and possibility at least as much as it is spiraling into a very dark place!" ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Richard Adler <richardcadler(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 7:16 AM Subject: TEDxDetroit To: paulbhartzog(a)gmail.com, Samuel Rose <samuel.rose(a)gmail.com>, Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com>, Matt Berlin <mattberlin23(a)gmail.com> So apparently there was a TED event in Detroit last night, but good luck finding out about it. I only know it happened because of tweets posted from the event by a reporter with the Detroit Free Press whom Paul and I met a couple of years ago. Now another tweet provides this link: http://www.detroitmoxie.com/home/2011/1/10/the-super-secret-detroit-ted-eve… I've cut-and-pasted the last part of the blog post below. I'm mentioning it because, frankly, it leaves me speechless. Apparently, these people believe the future of Detroit should be an invite-only process? Why, if the city "on the precipice", does it make sense to restrict attendance and quite likely exclude people who might have wished to participate and contribute? RCA -------------------------- *Why the secrecy?* *I have no idea. My thought is that TED (without the x<http://www.tedxdetroit.com/>) is an exclusive brand and Lincoln was aligning themselves with that elite group. Lincoln surely delivered on the slick event; it was top shelf.* *The usual pre-event buzz wasn’t their priority. Instead they had many local Detroiters in the twitterverse scratching their head in a “how did I miss this” type of way.* *To be fair, it is my understanding that the invitation was sent to the entire TEDxDetroit<http://www.detroitmoxie.com/home/2010/9/22/big-thinkers-to-share-at-tedxdet…>database. So, why weren’t those that were planning on attending talking about it? A simple line in the invitation reads:* *Also, please, no blogging nor tweeting this invitation/event before it takes place.* *TED@MotorCity and Lincoln proved that an event doesn’t need the “this event is going to be so cool” buzz to, in fact, be cool.* *Detroit is on a precipice and the people and their actions and decisions are going to decide which way it goes. Our “New Tomorrow” is up to us.* *Feedback, makers, reinvention, connection, and sharing. That is our “New Tomorrow.”* *TED@MotorCity not only delivered world-class speakers but it was world-class all the way around. * -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI

Re: [P2P-F] sharing, essence of things, technological determinism, economic determinism, and neoliberalism

However I would reject this approach as an unnecessary expansion of what neoliberalism stands for. Accordiong to this logic a claim such as 'Digital technologies will ultimately lead to communism' would have the thing as starting point and as such be neoliberal. Isn't this sort of absurd? One might well argue that this statement is false, even silly - fair enough, it probably is. But it is not neoliberal. Another example: 'Digital technologies have brought about new social practices which in turn have created havoc in the creative industries.' This statement starts with the thing, moves on to the social in a determining way, and concludes with an economic situation. In my view it would be very difficult to argue against this claim. It seems to me that this is a correct statement. How can it be neoliberal? I suppose I am reacting to strongly to this because I find myself struggling with issues regarding determinism. I have - like you and like most sociologists and anthropologists - always made a case for the primacy of the social (should we call this social determinism?), but with the rise of the information age/ the network society/the digital economy this very familiar position started to erode a litte bit. It is an interesting question why * social* sciences insist so stongly on the primacy of the *social*, or on * social* determinism. It is like a natural reflex. I wonder if this has something to do with a protection of disciplines. Obviously, if people concede that the social can sometimes and in some situations be determined by the thing, disciplines such as sociology and anthropology lose ground and relevance Helpful to avoid economic determinism is Marx and his notion of mode of production, which combines technology (productive forces) and social relations (property relations, power relations etc.). Talking about a digital mode of production then refers to technologies and to the social struggles over competing economic alternatives, which are fought for between various political groups at the moment. > So, yes, you can and should distinguish between technological and > economic determinism, and in this case both are at play: firstly the > economic determinism, where the thing is foregrounded, then the > technological determinism where the essence of the thing determines how > it should be organised. Japanese p2p fiction
by Michel Bauwens 10 Jan '11

Hi Kevin, I wonder if you could investigate, if not read, this: http://www.stanford.edu/~allison/saito.html ast year, I published a Sci-Fi fantasy novel to illustrate the goal of my research, as a sequel to Prof. Jun Murai's book about the Internet for children. I have translated the novel into English, and begun to distribute it under a CreativeCommons license so that people around the world can read the novel, and also hopefully help me improve the document and my research. The novel is titled "NEO IN WONDERLAND - A Tale of Money That Changed Our Future". The home url of the novel is http://grsj.jp/neo.pdf Please help spread the word about the novel. ------------------------------ *Overview of the novel:* Today, humanity seems to be suffering from a trilogy of problems: we are living in the era of Peak Oil in which the world production of petroleum is about to hit its peak if not it has already done so (energy crisis), which is probably the fundamental reason why we are experiencing the severest economic depression in the history of capitalism (economic crisis), while the whole human activities with effects to change the earthly environment are alleged to be the cause of climate changes (environmental crisis). Some argue that moving toward so-called green economy, or changing to natural energy sources instead of relying on fossil fuels, is the solution to all these. Will it work, or will it just introduce another level of the same trilogy of problems as long as our economy requires to keep growing? Let's begin an adventure with Accianco, a kindergarten girl, Kencha, a super robot, and Puppy-chan, a puppy, to explore an alternative solution in this sci-fi monetary fantasy novel. The story begins one year after the past adventure of the trio, in which they visited the Wonderland where the Internet is utilized in an extreme fashion. Dr. Suttokoholm, a blind genius scientist in the Wonderland, is kidnapped by the Army of Centricity that aims to invade the country! Accianco, Kencha, Puppy-chan and Accianco's mother go to the Wonderland through the wormhole invented by Dr. Suttokoholm. A new adventure begins around the centerless monetary mechanism in the centerless Wonderland that takes place in Hunan City, a big city in the Wonderland. What is the Army of Centricity after? Will Accianco and her friends be able to save Dr. Suttokoholm? The story evolves in an unexpected way as they encounter mysterious NEO in the Wonderland. <ks91(a)sfc.wide.ad.jp> -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI

Today I found http://www.diigo.com/profile/dazinism which looked like it would be good for the job. You can highlight text, leave stickynotes on the page, discuss the page. Looking good. To illustrate the concept with a recent pertinent Huffingtonpost article - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stephen-downes/connectivism-and-connecti_b_80… and (if it works for you, as I guess it may not if you are not registered on Diigo?) viewed through Diigo http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2Fstephen… All was looking good.... ... and then I found http://www.pearltrees.com/ ...now I'm confused again..... but I think I'm going to concentrate on using Diigo for now. Thank you for remixing that nicely for us. I recommend to all the article about connectivism (the one at Huffingtonpost). It was a wonderful read, and finally implanted this image inside me: that all interaction between people is like a giant brain learning! As for social (and individual) bookmarks, this is also something I am clearly at my limits with and would like to find a better solution. Diigo is great but I understand you can only watch those annotations etc. if you see the same page through diigo? And how does it work if you are looking in bookmarks by topic, by name, or by country, etc.? pearltrees are indeed very beautiful and the way I'd like to see info structured! they're not usable yet though? Is this a general need? I think tav's new application is going this way, but I am not sure it would be simple to use... I'd like to keep an eye on this, along with the events proposal it might evoke some useful coding thanks fabio 2011/1/7 Darren Hill <mail(a)vegburner.co.uk> -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI

Thanks to Giovanni for this overview, Sepp, would you agree to work on some kind of overview mapping of these different projects, in 2011, so that people could easily see what is going on? what kind of layered organisation schema could we use to make most sense of it? please also note http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:Standards and http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:Technology Michel Giovanni Lostumbo <giovanni.lostumbo(a)gmail.com> Jan 04 05:26AM -0800 ^<?ui=2&view=bsp&ver=ohhl4rw8mbn4#12d55f5f87d77831_digest_top> https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Freifunk http://www.masternewmedia.org/the-alternative-p2p-wireless-internet-network… https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Netsukuku https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/IEEE_802.11s also "http://blogs.computerworlduk.com/simon-says/2010/12/non-centralised- infrastructure/index.htm: " * YaCy is a search engine where many nodes share information to build a distributed index. * Status.Net is a microblogging system that allows users to run their own Twitter-like site and federate selected streams with other systems. * Tahoe-LAFS is a high-redundancy file system that allows many systems to contribute to an encrypted and distributed storage system which nonetheless remains readable only to the owner of the files and not to the owner of the storage .... * Diaspora will hopefully be a social networking community where users can run their own federated "pods", thus owning their personal data and directly controlling what is shared with who. * OpenPGP encryption is based on self-issued certificates which gain authority as a result of a web of trust expressed via user- maintained keyrings rather than a hierarchical certificate authority system that can be centrally compromised. * There is discussion and prototyping of a P2P DNS in progress, without a root authority but rather with federated authority... ... * Various federated identity approaches already exist for different use-cases, using mechanisms like OAuth and SAML. * Various experiments in using P2PTV video streaming technology exist, where the video stream is sourced from nearby users rather than always from a central provider. * And of course there are many P2P file distribution systems, as well as the GNUNet framework project.." http://www.stanford.edu/~allison/saito.html<http://www.stanford.edu/%7Eallison/saito.html> http://www.media-art-online.org/iwat/ http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/indices/a-tree/s/Saito:Kenji.html<http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/%7Eley/db/indices/a-tree/s/Saito:Kenji.h…> http://www.watsystems.net/watsystems-translation/english.html https://twitter.com/jukux http://www.accianco.jp/ http://www2.media-art-online.org/~ks91/gsap2009f-ks91.pdf<http://www2.media-art-online.org/%7Eks91/gsap2009f-ks91.pdf> http://www2.media-art-online.org/~ks91/gsap2009f-ks91-doc.pdf<http://www2.media-art-online.org/%7Eks91/gsap2009f-ks91-doc.pdf> -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI
