---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Nurul E <ne_atl(a)onebox.com> Date: Wed, Mar 14, 2018 at 9:59 PM Subject: FYI - Bloomberg's Shira Ovide: How Amazon Became Corporate America’s Nightmare To: Hi & FYI, if not already seen: "... The company has grown so large and difficult to comprehend that it’s worth taking stock of why and how it’s left corporate America so thoroughly freaked out. Executives at the biggest U.S. companies mentioned Amazon thousands of times during investor calls last year, according to transcripts—more than President Trump and almost as often as taxes. Other companies become verbs because of their products: to Google or to Xerox. Amazon became a verb because of the damage it can inflict on other companies. To be Amazoned means to have your business crushed because the company got into your industry. And fear of being Amazoned has become such a defining feature of commerce, it’s easy to forget the phenomenon has arisen mostly in about three years... The move comes after YouTube faced heavy criticism for promoting conspiracy videos and hateful content – just last month, the platform was forced to remove <https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/23/technology/trolls-step-ahead-facebook-yo…>one of its top trending videos alleging that David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, was a paid crisis actor. Critics <https://www.polygon.com/2018/3/14/17119932/wikipedia-conspiracy-theories-yo…> doubt that providing alternative viewpoints alongside controversial videos will solve the problem. Especially, if YouTube itself encourages consumption of extremist content through its algorithmic recommendations, as techno-sociologist Zeynep Tufekci suggest. In a sharp op-ed for The New York Times, she delineates YouTube’s monetization process, in which the company feeds its viewers with increasingly radical content, as this tends to lead to consumption of more videos. In other words, “*YouTube leads viewers down a rabbit hole of extremism, while Google racks up the ad sales* .” Although YouTube has faced intense scrutiny <https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jun/18/more-must-be-done-about-…> over the way terrorist groups have used the site for recruitment and propaganda, it’s only recently that the platform cracked down <https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/03/technology/youtube-right-wing-channels.h…> on videos posted by the far-right. But YouTube’s ability to radicalize goes beyond any specific topic or area, Tufekci’s insightful article points out. “Videos about vegetarianism led to videos about veganism. Videos about jogging led to videos about running ultramarathons. It seems as if you are never ‘hard core’ enough for YouTube’s recommendation algorithm. It promotes, recommends and disseminates videos in a manner that appears to constantly up the stakes. Given its billion or so users, YouTube may be one of the most powerful radicalizing instruments of the 21st century,” writes Tufekci. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=YouTube%20And%20Its%20Radicalizing%20…> <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Ft…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/youtube-and-its-radicaliz…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/youtube-and-its-radicaliz…> Source: Zeynep Tufekci | nytimes.com on 03/11/2018 | Image: Jennifer Heuer | Language: EN Opinion | YouTube, the Great Radicalizer Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/youtube-and-its-radicaliz…> paid content paid content <https://www.piqd.com/users/nechama.brodie> piqer: Nechama Brodie 5 <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/f-news-not-just-a-western…> 'F*#% News' Not Just A Western Problem <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/f-news-not-just-a-western…> Although the US, Britain and the EU still tend to dominate news headlines, it's not just Donald Trump and half of Europe that's battling against the rapid spread of false information online. In countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Korea, disinformation and misinformation campaigns are equally prominent, and possibly even more problematic – exploiting often volatile political party fault lines. Campaigns of false information also tend to have more diverse or different iterations than we see in 'the West', which exposes one of the primary mechanisms of the spread false information: how it exploits social behaviours in order to propagate. This short article <https://www.poynter.org/news/east-and-southeast-asia-misinformation-visible…> published on the Poynter network gives a timely and interesting overview of events and issues surrounding false information in South and Southeast Asia, and highlights why it's becoming a growing concern. I'm going to add that I dislike the term 'f*#% news'. It's been militarised by politicians and governments, and been used so randomly, for so many types of information, that it has become almost simultaneously meaningless. This very weaponised-amorphousness is problematic in itself, where states are banning or disrupting what they term 'f*#% news', but without any clear or universally accepted definition of what that means. Although this article points out that several regimes in Asia are already doing this (arresting people for publishing misinformation), it doesn't overtly say if or why this is problematic. The appropriation of 'f*#% news' as a means of diluting media freedom is potentially a much larger global problem than the 'f*#% news' itself. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=%27F%2A%23%25%20News%27%20Not%20Just%…> <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Ft…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/f-news-not-just-a-western…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/f-news-not-just-a-western…> Source: Masato Kajimoto | poynter.org on 03/14/2018 | Language: EN In East and Southeast Asia, misinformation is a visible and growing concern Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/f-news-not-just-a-western…> Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? important essay by David Graeber on seasonal changes in social structures
by Michel Bauwens 06 Mar '18

06 Mar '18

(stacco, this citation here is closely related to my reverse dominance citation, best to keep them together someplace, for a 'joint article' introduced by a short paragraph by me) David Graeber: "from the very beginning, human beings were self-consciously experimenting with different social possibilities. Anthropologists describe societies of this sort as possessing a ‘double morphology’. Marcel Mauss, writing in the early twentieth century, observed that the circumpolar Inuit, ‘and likewise many other societies . . . have two social structures, one in summer and one in winter, and that in parallel they have two systems of law and religion’. In the summer months, Inuit dispersed into small patriarchal bands in pursuit of freshwater fish, caribou, and reindeer, each under the authority of a single male elder. Property was possessively marked and patriarchs exercised coercive, sometimes even tyrannical power over their kin. But in the long winter months, when seals and walrus flocked to the Arctic shore, another social structure entirely took over as Inuit gathered together to build great meeting houses of wood, whale-rib, and stone. Within them, the virtues of equality, altruism, and collective life prevailed; wealth was shared; husbands and wives exchanged partners under the aegis of Sedna, the Goddess of the Seals. Another example were the indigenous hunter-gatherers of Canada’s Northwest Coast, for whom winter – not summer – was the time when society crystallised into its most unequal form, and spectacularly so. Plank-built palaces sprang to life along the coastlines of British Columbia, with hereditary nobles holding court over commoners and slaves, and hosting the great banquets known as potlatch. Yet these aristocratic courts broke apart for the summer work of the fishing season, reverting to smaller clan formations, still ranked, but with an entirely different and less formal structure. In this case, people actually adopted different names in summer and winter, literally becoming someone else, depending on the time of year. Perhaps most striking, in terms of political reversals, were the seasonal practices of 19th-century tribal confederacies on the American Great Plains – sometime, or one-time farmers who had adopted a nomadic hunting life. In the late summer, small and highly mobile bands of Cheyenne and Lakota would congregate in large settlements to make logistical preparations for the buffalo hunt. At this most sensitive time of year they appointed a police force that exercised full coercive powers, including the right to imprison, whip, or fine any offender who endangered the proceedings. Yet as the anthropologist Robert Lowie observed, this ‘unequivocal authoritarianism’ operated on a strictly seasonal and temporary basis, giving way to more ‘anarchic’ forms of organisation once the hunting season – and the collective rituals that followed – were complete."
