Stock surge & excitement aside, the move is indicative of where we are headed as an industry. It is no longer the “cool” thing to adopt blockchains. It has slowly become the norm. Exciting times indeed! Today’s issue covers more on Kodak’s move into the ecosystem, blockchains being used to strengthen democracy, an AI Index and philanthropy in the token economy. ------------------------------ <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=QDgyv-2BMwi7PHBezGhPQu-2BB-2BC5mnH3ftnOo…>Kodak shares more than double on news of new blockchain project - Business Insider <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=QDgyv-2BMwi7PHBezGhPQu-2BB-2BC5mnH3ftnOo…> uk.businessinsider.com <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=jPmo0XKBcfKLwCKWgtOgsStSeq-2FTeWR7v5McZR…> – Share <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=jPmo0XKBcfKLwCKWgtOgsStSeq-2FTeWR7v5McZR…> Here’s a “Kodak” moment for the token economy. The 115-year-old company that saw its market dominance being wiped away with the rise of digital and mobile photography is embracing blockchains. Kodak’s CEO believes their use of blockchain technology will add real world value to content creators struggling to keep tabs on how their content is used. The photography company has recently announced the addition of a rights-management service which will be able to detect when work is distributed unregistered and help creators to collect compensation for their work. Kodak is one of many now shifting their perspective on blockchain technology, and Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan has since followed suit. The bank’s CEO has now retracted his statement that ‘bitcoin is a fraud’ and instead states the technology’s promising future. As more and more naysayers become advocates, financial institutions and corporate entities continue to move forward, taking the blockchain with them. It is becoming apparent now that blockchain is entering the world of mainstream adoption. <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=Cxddp8diHLcW45D85hCuPVC2q7oomnMRv-2B1WRE…>This Candidate For Congress Will Let His Constituents Decide How He Vo <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=Cxddp8diHLcW45D85hCuPVC2q7oomnMRv-2B1WRE…> www.fastcompany.com <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=jPmo0XKBcfKLwCKWgtOgsR-2B0uF-2F4ssxtTA5a…> – Share <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=jPmo0XKBcfKLwCKWgtOgsR-2B0uF-2F4ssxtTA5a…> If we cast our gaze back over 2 millennia to Ancient Greece, we may remind ourselves of important lessons learned from past generations. It was here that thousands of Athenian citizens would meet at Pynx hill to voice their opinions on local issues, unknowingly birthing what is today known as direct democracy. Yet, as cities grew, thousands of citizens became tens of thousands, and those local systems became national systems, which in hand became a global mosaic stretching far beyond any one nation. Although we could take the core principles of democracy forward, direct democracy was no longer practical. Today, blockchain technology is once again reviving that ancient tradition. We previously spoke about how Brazil has recently made use of the Ethereum blockchain to cut out the complexities and allow it’s 145 million constituents to vote in an immutable way. The same is now happening in America, where Congress nominee Michael Allman has promised constituents that he will vote exactly as his voters choose using his blockchain-based petitioning website. The Republican candidate has offered this technology to other politicians willing to try it. If political systems continue to adopt blockchain technology in this way, we may see a rebirthed enthusiasm into systems long deemed ‘broken’ by millions of apathetic voters. Long live demos kratos. <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=Cxddp8diHLcW45D85hCuPcmfKzUr-2BOPrsZvHLF…>New artificial intelligence index tracks the emerging field <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=Cxddp8diHLcW45D85hCuPcmfKzUr-2BOPrsZvHLF…> phys.org <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=jPmo0XKBcfKLwCKWgtOgscqcHeDWMVzV4HoOD8Fm…> – Share <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=jPmo0XKBcfKLwCKWgtOgscqcHeDWMVzV4HoOD8Fm…> Emergent industries can often be abuzz with jargon and little substance. Since frontier technologies like robotics, IoT and AI often peak reader’s interest, the media tends to hype what’s going on at ground zero. While indexes often track where an entire economy is headed, there are very few that to the same to track where an emergent sector is headed. The AI Index <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=Cxddp8diHLcW45D85hCuPTSN6-2FpFyf8t5mRmYr…> has been developed by a group of Stanford based thought leaders to provide a comprehensive baseline to the state of artificial intelligence. Named AI100, the index measures 18 independent vectors in academia, industry, open-source software and public sentiments towards that technology. Shoham, a key individual responsible for setting up of the index stated “The goal of the AI Index is to provide a fact-based measuring stick against which we can chart progress and fuel a deeper conversation about the future of the field.” The inaugural version of the index makes some interesting findings. For instance, the number of AI-based startups has increased 14 fold since 2000, while investments in the space have surged six times. Student enrolments in introductory AI related courses have surged 45 times at Stanford during the same period. For more interesting data from the emergent field and the index itself, I suggest you give this report a good read. <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=l1OwVKLbLNBRw4sCtyPNElP2twF5zuHYPzEjfqF1…> P.s - Perhaps its time we set up an index for blockchains. That is the power of technology and communities. Blockchain’s ability to disrupt trust helps us ideate, transact and exchange with individuals from anywhere in the globe with minimal counterparty risk. The same can be used to solve real problems without having to donate capital towards a cause. A recent post on Hackernoon by Leah Stella Stephens <http://em.getrevue.co/wf/click?upn=Cxddp8diHLcW45D85hCuPdJl-2F-2FnL-2F5A-2B…> sheds light on how different communities use Steem to build solutions for problems varying from art license to teaching girls how to code. Reconsidering Value and Labour in the Digital Age.
by Christian Fuchs 09 Jan '18

09 Jan '18

Now (finally) available as paperback: Reconsidering Value and Labour in the Digital Age, ed. Eran Fisher & Christian Fuchs. http://www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9781137478566 http://fuchs.uti.at/books/reconsidering-value-and-labour-in-the-digital-age/ How do labour and value-production change in the age of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter? The labour theory of value is one of the core tenets of Marx’s theory of historical materialism, and of his understanding of capitalism. It is the theory that connects value to class structure, and that unveils the exploitative social relations that lay behind prices of commodities. This volume explores current interventions into the digital labour theory of value, proposing theoretical and empirical work that contributes to our understanding of Marx's labour theory of value, proposes how labour and value are transformed under conditions of digital and social media, and employ the theory in order to shed light on specific practices. With contributions by Christian Fuchs, Marisol Sandoval, Arwid Lund, Bingqing Xia, Brice Nixon, Eran Fisher, Yuqi Na, Thomas Allmer, Sebastian Sevignani, Jernej Prodnik, Olivier Frayssé, Jakob Rigi, Kylie Jarrett, Andrea Fumagalli, Frederick H. We invite submissions of book proposals that fall into the scope of the series. **Submission Deadline: Monday 12 February 2017 23:00 BST** by e-mail to Andrew Lockett (University of Westminster Press Manager) at A.Lockett(a)westminster.ac.uk For fullest series details and proposal guidelines see https://uwestminsterpress.blog/2018/01/08/call-for-book-proposal-submission… Books already published in the Series: https://www.uwestminsterpress.co.uk/site/books/series/critical-digital-and-… University of Westminster Press Publishing Portfolio: https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ubiquity-partner-network/uwp/UWP_Catalog… CALL DETAILS After the publication of five titles in the series we invite submission of book proposals (adhering to the guidelines set out below) as one document with one full chapter for books in the range of 35,000-80,000 words. The books in the series are published online in an open access format available online without payment using a Creative Commons licence (CC-BY-NC-ND) and simultaneously as affordable paperbacks. We are able to publish a number of books in the call without any book processing charges thanks to generous support by the University of Westminster that covers these fees. Potential authors are welcome to contact the series editor outside of the initial time frame of this call for book proposals but should note that priority for funding support for suitable projects will be given to those proposals meeting the deadline. There is a preference for the submission of proposals for books whose writing can be finished and that can be submitted to UWP within the next 6-15 months. In the event of a surplus of strong proposals preference will be given to single-authored book proposals over edited volumes. We welcome submissions of a book outline proposal with (exactly one) sample chapter submitted as one single Word or PDF document. We can only accept suggestions for books written in English. TOPICS Example topics that the book series is interested in include: the political economy of digital and social media; digital and informational capitalism; digital labour; ideology critique in the age of social media; new developments of critical theory in the age of digital and social media; critical studies of advertising and consumer culture online; critical social media research methods; critical digital and social media ethics; working class struggles in the age of social media; the relationship of class, gender and race in the context of digital and social media; the critical analysis of the implications of big data, cloud computing, digital positivism, the Internet of things, predictive online analytics, the sharing economy, location- based data and mobile media, etc.; the role of classical critical theories for studying digital and social media; alternative social media and Internet platforms; the public sphere in the age of digital media; the critical study of the Internet economy; critical perspectives on digital democracy; critical case studies of online prosumption; public service digital and social media; commons-based digital and social media; subjectivity, consciousness, affects, worldviews and moral values in the age of digital and social media; digital art and culture in the context of critical theory; environmental and ecological aspects of digital capitalism and digital consumer culture.

I am writing to let you know about a program we have co-designed with carers in the city of Adelaide. It is a peer-to-peer support model for carers. Past carers, who have been caring for a loved one in the past, support current carers that are going through the challenges of caring for a person in their family. This was a program co-design for and by carers in the last three years, and last year we decided to open-source the model. All the resources to implement and run the program are available here: weavers.tacsi.org.au. Please let me know if this program could be of interest for your research. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Vincent Lassalle <vince.lassalle(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Jan 5, 2018 at 11:24 AM Subject: My book, Bridge Builders, is out / Parution de Bridge Builders To: Hello, First let me wish you a very happy New Year, filled with many great moments of happiness. If you are receiving this email, it is that you have either indicated an interest in my post-industrial transition study of last year or that you were kind enough to contribute to it in some way. In either case, I thank you. I am happy to say that the study's synthesis has been published as a book in English (both paper and digital): *Bridge Builders - Learning from those ushering the future of society* <https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.libri…>. You will be able to find the book on any Amazon platform in the next couple weeks (the ebook should actually already be downloadable), if that is more convenient for you. However, if you want a copy today, you will have to go through the link above. This also supports the small French publishing start-up I chose to work with. If you live in France, the book should also be on order in any Fnac and over five thousand independent bookshops in the country, again, in a couple weeks. I hope you enjoy the read and please, do not hesitate to send it on to any who may be interested in the topic, or to send me your comments. Positive or negative, feedback is always appreciated. Fwd: Vivr Bien: Old Cosmologies and New Paradigms (GTN Discussion)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Tue, Jan 2, 2018 at 8:56 PM Subject: Vivr Bien: Old Cosmologies and New Paradigms (GTN Discussion) To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com >From Paul Raskin <praskin(a)tellus.org> ------------------------------------------------------- Dear GTN, Our November exchange on “the problem of action” considered the overarching challenge of animating a systemic movement capable of propelling a Great Transition.* Although the ultimate shape of such a “global citizens movement” (GCM) cannot be predetermined, we can broadly envision it as a multifaceted upsurge aligned by core values, principles, and visions. That discussion sets the backdrop for forthcoming forums on major oppositional streams. The January discussion will spotlight one such stream: movements rooted in traditional and indigenous cultures. Our point of departure is an incisive and eloquent essay prepared by Pablo Solón, “Vivir Bien: Old Cosmovisions and New Paradigms.” Pablo introduces Vivir Bien (also known as Buen Vivir), critiques governments that act in its name, and explains why the fruition of Vivir Bien needs – and can contribute to – an intertwined global movement. Please read the essay at www.greattransition.org/ publication/vivir-bien. I look forward to your comments. Does Pablo get it right? What would you add or challenge? What other peoples movements around the world might play a consequential role in a GT? What needs to be done to foster linkages among them, and with other anti-systemic forces challenging conventional development? The discussion will go through Friday, February 2nd.
