---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Fanny <fanny(a)gen-europe.org> Date: Fri, Jun 9, 2017 at 3:50 PM Subject: European Ecovillage Conference 2017- Ӓngsbacka, Sweden To: commonswatch(a)lists.p2pfoundation.net, commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org * Dear Friends, I invite you to join me at the annual European Ecovillage Conference which will take place between the 16th and 20th of July at the fabulous Ängsbacka ecovillage in Sweden. The most exciting news is that we have confirmed our two keynote speakers: Charles Eisenstein and Helena Norberg-Hodge who will speaking about their incredible work with alternative economies. This gathering will bring change-makers, activists, experts, intentional community members, and all those friends who dream, hope and act for a conscious and sustainable lifestyle. Together we will explore communal living topics such as the sharing economy and social currencies, food sovereignty, renewable energies, non-violent communication, group facilitation, governance models, collective and consensual decision making, bio-architecture and ecological activism. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking; it´s simply the best place to meet Ecovillagers from all over Europe! Anybody who is fascinated by alternative lifestyles, please come along, this will be a truly inspiring space! We are also looking for participants to co-create this event with us, Get in touch if you would like to offer workshops, presentations, films or anything else. Please spread the word and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any question. Find the press release at the bottom of this email. * Warmest regards, Fanny van Hal Membership Officer at GEN Europe * European Ecovillage Conference 2017- Ӓngsbacka, Sweden “Conscious Happiness: Living the Future Today Solidarity, Resilience, and Hope” “This is an opportunity to take a drink from the wellspring of knowledge offered by people who are living a new normal.”-Charles Eisenstein, visionary and conference keynote speaker #ecovillages #community #beautifulalternatives #innovativesolutions #togetherwerise We invite you to join us at the 21st edition of the Global Ecovillage Network Europe (GEN Europe) summer conference, July 16th-20th 2017 at the Swedish ecovillage Ӓngsbacka. The European Ecovillage Conference’s vibrant programme is brought alive by co-creators offering talks, workshops, and interactive sessions centered on the theme “Conscious Happiness - Living The Future Today: Solidarity, Resilience, Hope.” Highlights will include keynote addresses by acclaimed speakers, authors and activists Charles Eisenstein and Helena Norberg-Hodge, who will engage some of the great challenges of our time - and invite participants to explore solutions offered by the ecovillage movement. Norberg-Hodge, creator of “The Economics of Happiness” notes, “There’s been a really dramatic [cultural] shift, just in the last couple of years, and yet it needs more awareness. It’s the consciousness that’s missing…. There is this huge need for global communication and interaction... We need that flowering of connections which we can start with right now at home but also reach out across internationally into a global movement. ” The Global Ecovillage Network is a membership-based coalition of Ecovillages, or intentional communities, that holistically integrate ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability into regenerative living models. The GEN Europe network connects, sustains and diffuses the work of ecovillage and communities across Europe, within ecovillage communities and also to those who are curious to learn about the movement. Solidarity During the 5 day conference, participants will explore a particularly timely series of events centred around our theme of solidarity. At a time of great change and political divisiveness, there is an urgent need to address hardships with insights gained from living intentionally together. Norberg-Hodge describes a part of the work of solidarity this way: “Let’s get away from this idea that we don’t need anybody. We do need others. Let’s not be afraid to express that to one another.” Workshops exploring the Eroles residential in Grenada, which put migrants at the centre of community co-creation, and the Sustainer, which combines permaculture principles and ecovillage innovation to build an autonomous shelter for those who’ve had to flee their homes, will showcase some of the many ways in which ecovillages are acting in solidarity around Europe. Resilience Personal and collective resilience in the face of changing climate, cultural upheaval, and spiritual emptiness is a key theme of many of our workshops and exhibits. Workshop leader and evolutionary biologist Bjorn Grinde describes how ecovillages meet a biological need that increases our happiness and well-being: “Humans are adapted to live in tribal settings. Research shows people need to find meaning in these [smaller] units. For the future of the world, finding a meaning of life in a setting of ecological balance is even better because that will point towards a way of living that benefits future society.” The Ecovillage Sustainable Technology Exposition <https://gen-europe.org/news-events/expo/index.htm> will feature open source solutions for reducing carbon emissions and producing energy efficient systems, many demonstrated and built on site by their ecovillage inventors. Conference participants will learn how to build simple wind turbines or try out superefficient energy-saving cookware. Exploring other aspects of resilience, workshop leaders from Spain, Sweden, Holland and beyond consider our human relationships and spiritual development, from addressing “the shadows” in our lives to learning innovative conflict resolution strategies to inviting attendees to try out organizational structures used in ecovillages. Hope The conference will build an atmosphere that offers participants hope and inspiration. As Eisenstein, author of “The More Beautiful World our Hearts Know is Possible”, puts it, “hope is the feeling when you glimpse a real possibility. Hope is what comes when you have an experience of what’s possible in the future, even if you don’t know how to get there. This is an opportunity to take a drink from the wellspring of knowledge offered by people who are living a new normal.” Young people help us see the path to our collective future, and therefore our conference team is supported by an international team of young volunteers from across Europe. The conference will also feature a children’s festival and provide people of all ages a chance to connect across generations and cultures to create new friendships. In addition to workshops, participants can expect opportunities to celebrate and practice healing arts, interactive events like a living map of ecovillages across Europe, and plenty of time to relax. The conference is a family-friendly drug and alcohol free experience, offering managed campsites with outdoor facilities and full vegetarian catering. “A more beautiful world IS possible… and you will experience a part of it during the gathering at Ӓngsbacka” welcomes Ewa Jacobsson of Ӓngsbacka. A number of organisations have come together and drafted a sign-on statement that we will send to the Bolivian Government and President Evo Morales. The statement is posted for endorsement in English, Spanish and French at the link below. https://focusweb.org/campaigns/signon-statement-support-pabl o-solon-rafael-archondo-and-against-bala-chepete-megadams <http://s.bl-1.com/h/L9SPzyM?url=https://focusweb.org/campaigns/signon-state…> *We will collect endorsements till 19 July 2017.* We request you to please endorse the statement yourself, and also share it in with your contacts and networks for endorsements. You can find more information about the case at the websites and Facebook pages of Fundacion Solon and Focus on the Global South. We are counting on your support. Best wishes, Shalmali Guttal =========================================== Signon statement in support of Pablo Solon, Rafael Archondo and against the Bala Chepete megadams pablosolon2.jpg <https://focusweb.org/campaigns/file/4> We the undersigned have been inspired by Bolivia’s social movements that have shown that another world is possible. From the Water War in Cochabamba to the approval of a new constitution and a plurinational state in 2009, Bolivia has shown that it possible to challenge and present alternatives to postcolonialist states, neoliberalism, multinational power and US imperialism. The election of Bolivia’s first indigenous president, Evo Morales and the MAS government, heralded great hope for advancing not just a more socially-just country, but a new international vision for a just society and a harmonious relationship with Nature rooted in the profound indigenous concept of ‘Buen Vivir’. Bolivia rightly became recognised on the international stage for its advocacy of Mother Earth rights and for its prophetic voice at UN climate summits and particularly for its hosting of the historic World Peoples Summit on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in 2010 in Cochabamba. It is with profound disappointment, then, that we hear that one of the key organisers of the historic Cochabamba climate summit, Pablo Solón, along with Rafael Archondo, is being threatened by the Bolivian government with criminal charges and potential jail sentences of up to four years. The accusations six years on that allege Solón “illegally appointed” Archondo and that Archondo committed the crime of “prolonging functions in the Permanent Mision of Bolivia to the UN” can only be seen as attempts to silence Solón for his vocal criticism of the government and the construction of two giant hydroelectric projects, El Bala and El Chepete in the Amazonian region. These mega-dams, if built, also run completely against any vision of ‘Buen Vivir’. According to the government’s own commissioned studies, done by the Italian firm Geodata, they would inundate an area five times larger than Bolivia’s city of La Paz, displace more than 5000 indigenous peoples, and deforest more than 100,000 hectares. The evidence is also that they are not even economically viable given the current prices of electricity in Brazil. We also note that the accusations against Solón and Archondo are not isolated cases, but are part of a series of threatened and implemented legal actions against individuals as well as attempts to close organisations in Bolivia that have a proud record of advancing social and environmental justice. This attempt to silence dissent goes against the principles of Bolivia’s new constitution and is deeply troubling for the potential long-term success of Bolivia’s revolution. Participatory democracy depends on a rigorous and robust debate, while environmental justice can only happen if communities at the frontlines of extraction are supported and empowered rather than silenced and criminalised. We therefore urge you to drop the false charges against Pablo Solón and Rafael Archondo and stop the hugely destructive El Bala and El Chepete mega-dam projects. Bolivia will have no credibility on climate change and the rights of Mother Earth if it invests in mega-dams and persecutes its principal environmental defenders. We urge the Bolivian government to show that its international rhetoric on ‘Buen Vivir’ and the defense of Mother Earth is not empty rhetoric, but is reflected in its policies and practices at home. _______________________________________________ CommonGood Mailingliste JPBerlin - Politischer Provider CommonGood(a)listi.jpberlin.de https://listi.jpberlin.de/mailman/listinfo/commongood -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

The investors, representing approximately $190 billion in assets and Assets Under Management (AUM), argued in a filing with the FCC that a rulemaking proposed in April 2017 - which would gut net neutrality protections - is “fundamentally flawed.” They urged the Commission to continue to regulate broadband Internet service under Title II of the Communications Act. “An Internet which guarantees fair and equal treatment is a core driver of America’s economic growth. We believe network neutrality principles are critical to that process,” the investors said. “Open Internet principles also promote free speech, civic participation, democratic engagement and marketplace competition, as well as robust broadband adoption and participation in the Internet community by people of color and other socially and economically disadvantaged groups.” The investor filing specifically challenged the FCC staff’s assertion that Open Internet rules adopted in 2015 have caused Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to reduce their investment in broadband networks. *“As investors, we find no evidence that the Commission’s 2015 Open Internet order has caused publicly-held ISPs to reduce their investment in broadband networks,” the investors said. “Such a conclusion is at odds with multiple public statements by corporate executives of the leading ISPs as well as data the companies have previously supplied to shareholders in their filings to the Securities and Exchange Commission.”* The investor filing cited research by Open MIC, a non-profit that promotes shareholder engagement with media and telecommunications companies, which examined recent financial statements from ISPs holding an estimated total of 86% of the U.S. broadband Internet market. Those firms include Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, Charter, CenturyLink and Altice. *“Overwhelmingly and without exception, the leading providers of broadband internet service in the U.S. portray an outlook for network investment that is healthy and robust,” the investors noted.* The investors argued that changes to Title II regulation could also stifle growth in initial public stock offerings by tech companies. Potential “blocking, throttling and paid prioritization of Internet content constitute a significant threat to economic innovation on the Internet,” they added. Scott M. Stringer, New York City Comptroller and one of the signers of the Comment, said: “In the 21st century, the Internet is a modern form of the public square. It’s where ideas are exchanged, movements are started, value is created, and information is shared across the globe. By rolling back these commonsense consumer protections, the FCC would be limiting free speech, stifling value-creating innovation, and undermining fairness for all of us. The bottom line is simple: information shouldn’t be sold to the highest bidder. That’s not just bad for investors – it’s bad for Americans.” Jonas Kron, Senior Vice President of Trillium Asset Management, added: “The FCC needs to understand that the vast majority of investors these days have portfolios that are tied to broad stock market indices or are widely diversified throughout the market. That means asset managers want to see the business benefits of the Internet rippling and multiplying throughout the entire economy - not being hoarded only by a handful of incumbent gatekeeper companies that deliver broadband Internet services.” Investors have long been a critical voice in the net neutrality fight. In the years leading up to the adoption of net neutrality rules in 2015, investors put significant pressure on ISPs as well as the FCC in support of the reclassification of the Internet under Title II of the Communications Act. “Investors understand the business case for net neutrality, and now they are again ensuring that the FCC hears it loud and clear,” said Michael Connor, Executive Director of Open MIC. “The investment community worked hard to make sure Open Internet rules were successfully adopted in 2015, and they’re not going to back down now. Consistent regulatory policy is critical for a thriving Internet economy.” Investment advisors and investment management firms joining the FCC comment are Scott M. Stringer, New York City Comptroller; Boston Common Asset Management, Trillium Asset Management LLC, Sustainability Group of Loring, Wolcott & Coolidge, Zevin Asset Management LLC, Friends Fiduciary Corporation, Arjuna Capital LLC, Share Power Responsible Investing Inc., SRI Investing LLC and Earth Equity Advisors LLC. Its shape and directions are fashioned by the interests and creative intelligence of its participants who, through generative conversations, co-create new and ever broadening streams of action/inquiry. There is no project "plan". We are creating the path by walking together. In February this year we convened a one-day workshop to explore directions for the project. The themes that emerged that day have guided its development this year. And each new initiative has in turn opened up new fields for exploration. This flowchart summarises where we have been and where we are heading. Scroll down for thumbnail descriptions of each project. The Anthropocene Paradox: The slides from Professor Will Steffen's keynote address at the May 24 symposium are available on request. Defiant Earth: An audio recording of Professor Clive Hamilton's keynote address at the June 27 symposium will soon be available online. Earth System Change & Cultural Evolution: A report of this June 27 workshop will be available soon. Fwd: Commons Transition - from Ghent to Bristol

Michel Bauwens: Ghent is a mid-sized city of about 300,000 inhabitants, with a huge student population, and a prest" New post on *P2P Foundation* <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?author=1530> First Impressions on the Commons Transition in Ghent: An Interview with Michel Bauwens <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/first-impressions-commons-transition-ghent-i…> by Vasilis Niaros <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?author=1530> *An interview with Michel Bauwens, conducted by Vasilis Niaros.* *Vasilis Niaros: Can you give us a short background of the project?* *Michel Bauwens*: Ghent is a mid-sized city of about 300,000 inhabitants, with a huge student population, and a prestigious history. It was once the biggest city in northwestern Europe (12th-13th century). It has had a progressive red-green-blue city coalition for more than a decade and has already been active in supporting many citizen initiatives. But as the city became more and more aware of the importance of the commons in these new models, it asked us as the P2P Foundation (myself and coordinator Yurek Onzia for our p2p/commons related expertise) to map the commons in Ghent, and to see what is expected of city authorities in this context. Thus, we have three months for intense conversations with the local players, and to produce a Commons Transition Plan. *VN: In which phase are you at the moment? What have you done so far?* MB: We are pretty much done with the investigative and ‘mapping phase’. We did a lot of online research, about 80 conversations with project initiators, an in-depth questionnaire; and all of this has been put in a open and shared wiki <http://wiki.commons.gent>, which is organized by major ‘provisioning’ systems, i.e. food, mobility, housing, etc. In parallel, we have organized, with the assistance of Timelab <http://timelab.org/> and Evi Swinnen, weekly meetings in order to stimulate more interconnection between players in particular fields. Timelab is one of the maker cultural centers/makerspaces and has been an essential ally and supporter for this project. A lot is happening in Ghent. The Flanders region has known a tenfold increase in commons-connected citizen initiatives in the last ten years, but as in many other places, there is still too much fragmentation. We are using the commons narrative to catalyze more convergence across projects, so that they can have a systemic effect on the city ecosystem and even influence policy making. Some areas we are specially focusing on are the economic realities of the commons projects (what are their concrete resources), their regulatory difficulties, and the possibilities of turning them into real economic and social projects that can stimulate the local economy. Our basic hypothesis is that the transition towards these commons models is also vital to morph into sustainable societies. *VN: Which are the main challenges that you have faced by now?* *MB:* The collaboration and reception we received from both the city and the citizen initiatives have been tremendous. More than 50% have returned our extended questionnaire, and we’ve had good attendance at our collective meetings. Amongst our preliminary findings are: 1. Ghent has a dynamic city administration that is effectively engaged in the transition, for the long term, but there are still too many sectorally fragmented approaches; 2. Ghent has very dynamic and organized citizens that are concretely initiating and advancing transition projects, but they are also quite fragmented, although some sectors are more advanced than others, such as food and energy; 3. amongst the weaknesses is that Ghent lacks an emergent industry, and that university institutions are not visibly connected with citizen initiatives; 4. in general, there is a lot of action, but not yet much meta-reflection and inter-connection and alignment between projects. We made a lot of progress with our wiki <http://wiki.commons.gent>, lots of material to work with and analyze, and we will soon be ready with our writing and proposition phase. *VN: Can you give us an idea of some of the directions that you are taking in terms of proposed solutions?* *MB:* The key issue for me is how we can move from the current situation of fragmentation towards the beginning of an alternative eco-system that is sustainable and socially fair. One of my ideas is to build on the structure that has shown relative success in the most advanced sectors, which is the success in creating the beginning of an alternative food system. Ghent has a wide variety of CSA projects, collective purchasing groups, and the like, in which new producers and active prosumers are creating new relationships. It also has a workshop where the key players of this new economy are studying and reflecting together, and can propose changes to the city. It also has a food policy council and project, Ghent en Garde, that is fully committed to the sustainability transition. I think this could be the basis of a generic structure for the transition in the other provisioning systems as well; I call this ‘sustainability empowerment platforms’. I’m also looking at how the collective purchasing power of the anchor institutions, could leverage this power in terms of sustainable local purchasing by moving to social procurement practices. Ghent has one million school meals in the city schooling system, which could be locally sourced. Timelab has pioneered a ‘call for commons’ approach in which, instead of competing for scarce subsidies, actors create common solutions through a network approach, which could be generalized in other city-based projects, instead of purely competitive bids. On a more fundamental political level, can city institutions and democratic procedures integrate the ‘right to challenge’ by citizen initiatives, and even the ‘right to initiate’ as is already the case in Bologna for example? Is the city and its administrative and political culture ready to become a ‘partner city’ which can empower citizens to co-create common-wealth more systematically and successfully? *VN: What is the role of the municipality in the project?* *MB:* The municipality commissioned the project. It is the first municipality in the world to look strategically at the commons transition, that’s not trivial. The mayor and the strategic directorate of the city have been supportive and have nominated a very effective coordinator, which has opened doors for us to meet a series of engaged officials in different departments. In parallel, we received equally enthusiastic support from civil society initiatives and organisations, showing us that the commons are alive and correspond to a true aspiration. The difficulty of the project is not to be underestimated however, i.e. how to get more convergence and systematicity amongst commons actors in the various sectors, and how to realize more voice and political clout. How can we tackle the more infrastructural commons requirements, such as space and land, which is subject to tremendous speculative activity and gentrification? How can we fund the commons transition, for example, through circular finance that tackles the cost of negative externalities and supports commons initiatives which drastically improve the material footprint of human economic and social activities? You’ve each contributed to my thinking along the way, so I thought you might welcome sight of the first policy paper I’ve generated with colleagues in my new role, which makes mention of Data Cooperatives in the context of health and care data sharing – albeit integral to a range of related ideas, findings and recommendations. I’ve attached the press release and Executive Summary and would warmly welcome your feedback as and when you get a moment: I do hope we’ve done the topic justice under fast-moving circumstances. Otherwise, it remains for me to say that I’d be very grateful if you could please forward / share with anyone you think might be interested – the main report can be downloaded: https://futurecarecapital.org. uk/policy/intelligent-sharing-unleashing-the-potential-of- health-and-care-data-in-the-uk-to-transform-outcomes/ Many thanks – once again – Annemarie Annemarie Naylor Director of Policy & Consultancy Future Care Capital, Gillingham House, Ground Floor, 38-44 Gillingham Street, London SW1V 1HU +44 (0) 7525 236797 annemarie.naylor(a)futurecarecapital.org.uk @commonfutrs W: http://www.futurecarecapital.org.uk/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ futurecarecapital/ This message is intended only for the use of the addressee and may contain information that is privileged, confidential and exempt from disclosure under applicable law. The book explores practices, strategies, organisational forms, legal mechanisms and urban policies to create, develop, reuse, maintain or purchase buildings that accommodate civic spaces. In the Autumn, we will organise a series of book launch events and will launch a call for co-organisers. *SUPPORTING EU INSTITUTIONS* In the past months, we have been working along with various EU institutions to support cities in creating more integrated, sustainable and inclusive policies and in using better existing financial resources. We were present at the European Commission / DG Regio’s Urban Development Network <http://eutropian.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6f5f07da1cb2d216de13672…>meeting in Ghent and moderated a Dialogue event of the European Investment Bank’s Jaspers <http://eutropian.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6f5f07da1cb2d216de1367…> programme in Vienna. *COUNSELING CITIES* We have been helping municipalities in experimenting with new programmes and modalities of cooperation with civic stakeholders. In Split and Dubrovnik, in the frame of the Approaches to Participatory Governance of Cultural Institutions <http://eutropian.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6f5f07da1cb2d216de13672…> project, we met municipal officers and cultural producers who work on new models of innovative cultural institutions based on the principles of participatory governance. In Murcia, we joined forces with the experimental network Urbelac <http://eutropian.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6f5f07da1cb2d216de1367…>, connecting European and Latin American cities around innovative policies. With the Interactive Cities <http://eutropian.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6f5f07da1cb2d216de13672…>Urbact Action Planning Network, we organised a study visit to Helsinki and co-designed a transnational meeting in Tartu. *WORKING WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES* Eutropian is rooted in the communities where its members live.
