Capture All_Play - An interview with McKenzie Wark

Sorry for any cross posting... Capture All_Play - An interview with McKenzie Wark Marc Garrett and Ruth Catlow interview McKenzie Wark ahead of his keynote speach for Transmediale 2015 in Berlin this year. http://www.furtherfield.org/features/interviews/capture-allplay-interview-m… It's ten years since McKenzie Wark published his influential book, A Hacker Manifesto. Divided into 17 chapters, each offers a series of short, numbered paragraphs that mimic the epigrammatic style of Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle. Wark then published, amongst others, a series of critically engaging books such as Gamer Theory and the Spectacle of Disintegration. Catlow and Garrett from Furtherfield ask Wark how things have changed since these publications, focusing on the way our everyday lives have been infiltrated by competitive game-like mechanisms that he described more than a decade ago. Ruth Catlow will be at Transmediale 2015 CAPTURE ALL, moderating the keynote Capture All_Play with McKenzie Wark, on Sat, 31 Jan at 18:00. http://www.transmediale.de/node/25752 Ruth is also participating in two other events, Play as a Commons: Practical Utopias & P2P Futures and The Post-Digital Review: Cultural Commons - http://www.transmediale.de/content/ruth-catlow

Fwd: [Networkedlabour] Fwd: Literature and the Creative Economy

We hope the following titles will be of interest to you. [image: Literature and the Creative Economy] <http://www.combinedacademic.co.uk/literature-and-the-creative-economy>*Literature and the Creative Economy <http://www.combinedacademic.co.uk/literature-and-the-creative-economy>* *Sarah Brouillette* "Brouillette has written what will quickly become the definitive account of contemporary British literature—and of the now pandemic effort to monetize creativity. Over the last twenty years, management gurus, policy wonks, and academics of all stripes have set out to calculate the value of self-expression, both to local and national economies and the legions of precarious workers now encouraged to style themselves self-promoting entrepreneurs. Poets and novelists have made similar if far more complex calculations, argues Brouillette's brilliant study, even as they've kept a melancholy eye fixed on the slow but seemingly unstoppable erosion of their art's autonomy."—Michael Szalay, UC Irvine "Sarah Brouillete's *Literature and the Creative Economy* is a potentially pathbreaking work that does not simply critique the idea of the creative economy, but rather shows us how it actually works—most innovatively, in the changes it has produced in the institution of literature itself."—Nicholas Brown, University of Illinois at Chicago For nearly twenty years, social scientists and policy makers have been highly interested in the idea of the creative economy. This book contends that mainstream considerations of the economic and social force of culture, including theories of the creative class and of cognitive and immaterial labor, are indebted to historic conceptions of the art of literary authorship. What's more, it shows how contemporary literature has been involved in and has responded to creative-economy phenomena, including the presentation of artists as models of contentedly flexible and self-managed work, the treatment of training in and exposure to art as a pathway to social inclusion, the use of culture and cultural institutions to increase property values, and support for cultural diversity as a means of growing cultural markets. Contemporary writers have not straightforwardly bemoaned these phenomena in a classic rejection of the instrumental application of art. Rather, they have tended to explore how their own critical capacities have become compatible with or even essential to a neoliberal economy that has embraced art's autonomous gestures as proof that authentic self-articulation and social engagement can and should occur within capitalism. Taking a sociological approach to literary criticism, Brouillette interprets major works of contemporary fiction by Monica Ali, Aravind Adiga, Daljit Nagra, and Ian McEwan alongside government policy, social science, and theoretical explorations of creative work and immaterial labor. *Sarah Brouillette* is Associate Professor of English at Carleton University. Fwd: Succesful and fruitful Degrowth workshop in Budapest - The Right Great Transformation is underway!
by P2P Foundation mailing list 27 Jan '15

27 Jan '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Vincent Liegey <vliegey(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jan 27, 2015 at 4:18 PM Subject: Succesful and fruitful Degrowth workshop in Budapest - The Right Great Transformation is underway! To: info(a)nemnovekedes.net After Ljubljana in 2013, Zagreb in March, Sofia in May and Leipzig in September 2014 <http://programme.leipzig.degrowth.org/en/degrowth2014/public/events/55>, a two-day long regional workshop on Degrowth in postsocialist countries <http://nemnovekedes.net/?p=127> took place in Budapest on the 24-25 January 2015 <http://nemnovekedes.net/?p=130>. Around 100 people from about 20 countries participated during the two days of activities. On the first day of the participatory workshop, discussions, and brainstorming activities took place in small and large groups. Several issues were debated such as Degrowth and inequalities, Degrowth and the gift economy, Basic Income, Degrowth as a provocative slogan and how could it be used in other languages, Degrowth in practice, Degrowth and education, Degrowth in post-socialist countries, East-West interrelations and dialogue, etc. [image: DSC04991] <http://nemnovekedes.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/DSC04991.jpg>The lunch was made with local food sourced directly from the organic farm in Zsambok <http://www.zsambokibiokert.hu/#!home/coqo>. Many thanks to the self-managed kitchen team who prepared delicious beetroot, onion and carrot salads, körozöt and potato stew. Also thanks to all the participants and all the products shared. We concluded this first day with an open discussion about public debt and extractivism with Nicolas Sesiron from the Committee for the Abolition of Third World Debt <http://cadtm.org/English>. [image: DSC04989] <http://nemnovekedes.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/DSC04989.jpg>Finally, before a convivial party contemplating the falling snow and the Buda hills, Miklos Antal gave a talk about the physical limits to growth, explaining why sufficiently fast decoupling is very unlikely. Then Vincent Liegey presented the cultural limits by questioning why the quest for more is far away from a meaningful life. Convivial discussions on how to reappropriate hope and conviviality carried on until late night. [image: DSC04985] <http://nemnovekedes.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/DSC04985.jpg>The second day was spent focusing on concrete alternatives and self-organisation for future projects. We were first welcomed by Edina of the Szimpla backyard small producers’ market <http://www.szimpla.hu/szimpla-market> who presented the cultural and community development activities surrounding the weekly food market. Afterwards Logan from the organic farm of Zsambok explained why direct market of this nature are important to, on one hand find opportunities to directly sell the products, and on the other hand to implement trustful and transparent relationships between the consumers and the producers. Also in the warm and special atmosphere of the market, we had a session on the application to host the next Degrowth Conference in Budapest with a regional organisation. After lunch in the market, we departed on foot, on a sightseeing walk in wonderful Budapest, to Noha Studio, where Adrien presented all the workshops and activities happening there. He also presentedCyclonomia’s activities <http://cyclonomia.org/cyclonomia-in-english/>, Do it Yourself bike and low tech shop, where we had a meeting about upcoming events and projects we could implement. Also people from diverse backgrounds could share their different experiences, in particular connected to local alternatives and initiatives. Again thanks to all the participants and all the people who contributed to this succesful organisation. In particular, thanks to Adrien, Orsi, Laura, Dimas, Logan, Edina, Peter, Adela, Dan, Tamara, Miklos, Mladen, Ajda, Jutka, Lidija, Gabi, Szabina, Tone, Blanka, Christina and a lot of other for their precious help and contributions. Everything was organised based on reciprocity economy principles. We received free donations which help us to balance the budget in supporting local partners. In Budapest, Karl Polanyi’s town, we could enjoy a new Great Transformation which is underway… But that one, is based on Degrowth. That’s one is the right one. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Copyright Reform: The European Parliament Must Follow the Reda Report!
by P2P Foundation mailing list 26 Jan '15

26 Jan '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Mon, Jan 26, 2015 at 5:54 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Copyright Reform: The European Parliament Must Follow the Reda Report! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: COPYRIGHT REFORM, JULIA REDA, CREATIVE CONTRIBUTION, ANDRUS ANSIP, GUNTER OETTINGER La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/copyright-reform-the-european-parliament-mu… Copyright Reform: The European Parliament Must Follow the Reda Report! *** Paris, January 26, 2015 — Yesterday, MEP Julia Reda [1] presented in the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI [2]) of the European Parliament a report [3] on the harmonization of copyright in Europe. She tables modest but welcome proposals for a reform of copyright, several of which have been supported [4] by La Quadrature du Net. *** Noting that many problems remain in the harmonization at European level, and the failure of the current Directive to address users' needs and practices, the German MEP Julia Reda (Greens/EFA) proposes to act on different levers to strengthen user rights. Her report especially encourages the promotion of the Public Domain, bringing down copyright term from 70 to 50 years after the author's death. She also asks for all exceptions to copyright contained in the current Directive to become mandatory, so that no EU citizen can be deprived of their benefit by a too restrictive national legislation. To free up innovative uses, Julia Reda proposes to extend some of the existing exceptions. Regarding the right to remix, mashup and other transformative uses, she calls for making the exception of citation applicable in the audiovisual field, and to admit the parody exception for non-humorous creations. In the area of research and teaching, Julia Reda proposes to expand the currently existing educational exception and to introduce a new exception for data mining (Text and Data Mining). She also encourages libraries to make works available in digital form, as an extension of their traditional mission of providing access to culture. On the contrary to what is already supported by the proponents of a maximalist view of copyright, these proposals do not aim to "destroy copyright." Instead, Julia Reda recalls in the preamble to her report the importance of recognizing protection for the benefit of creators, and the possibility for them to receive appropriate remuneration, even calling to strengthen their position against intermediaries like producers and publishers. La Quadrature du Net welcomes these proposals, most of which are in the agenda of a positive reform of copyright defended [5] by the association since the rejection of ACTA. However, it is very unfortunate that the issue of legalising non-commercial sharing between individuals was ignored. This is not only essential to the recognition of new rights of individuals over culture, but it also remains the best way to end the repressive spiral in which most EU countries are committed under the lobbying of cultural industries. Save the aforementioned hesitation, La Quadrature du Net invites citizens to support and comment [6] on the proposals in the Reda report and call MEPs from the European Parliament committees to vote in the proposed direction. The debate before the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) will take place on February 23 and 24, 2015 and a final vote in the plenary session is scheduled on April 20, 2015. Citizens, professional and amateur authors and artists, entrepreneurs, researchers, teachers, librarians have an common interest in the adoption of such a positive reform! "It is time to measure the scope of the new uses allowed by the digital tools and to adapt copyright accordingly. The proposals of the Reda report will have a positive economic impact on creativity, and will boost research, education and access to culture. They must be supported as the first step in a positive reform of the European copyright!" Said Lionel Maurel, member of the Strategic Orientation Council of La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. http://parltrack.euwiki.org/mep/Julia%20REDA 2. http://parltrack.euwiki.org/committee/JURI 3. https://juliareda.eu/2015/01/report-eu-copyright-rules-maladapted-to-the-we… 4. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/elements-for-the-reform-of-copyright-and-re… 5. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/elements-for-the-reform-of-copyright-and-re… 6. https://www.discuto.io/en/consultation/6240 ** About La Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. Fwd: Global call for sharing update - January 2015
by P2P Foundation mailing list 26 Jan '15

26 Jan '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Share The World's Resources <info(a)news-stwr.org> Date: Tue, Jan 13, 2015 at 11:56 PM Subject: Global call for sharing update - January 2015 To: "michel(a)p2pfoundation.net" <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Dear Michel Bauwens, In little over a month since its official launch, 535 people and 24 organisations from 45 countries have signed in support of STWR’s ‘global call for sharing’ campaign. As we begin 2015, we would like to thank all our signatories—in particular the P2P Foundation, Global Social Justice, Kosmos Journal, the Post Growth Institute, Shareable, Globalisation for the Common Good, and the People Who Share for their organisational endorsements. A special thanks also to our volunteers across the world who have translated the campaign statement into nine additional languages. As outlined in our strategy document <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQ9-1/c.aspx>, the overall objective of the campaign is to promote the role that a call for sharing can play in uniting citizens and progressive organisations in a common cause. In the period ahead, we will therefore be working towards galvanising a broader public debate on the need for wealth, power and resources to be shared more equitably—on a global as well as a national basis. If you have not done so already, you can support this initiative by adding your name to the campaign statement <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQ5-1/c.aspx> and encouraging other individuals and organisations to sign up. Our research and advocacy work would not be possible without your ongoing support. STWR is funded entirely through private donations from individuals, and we do not receive any funding from governments or other institutions. Nor are we affiliated with any political party or corporate enterprise. Please consider making a donation to support our work by following this link <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQ4-1/c.aspx> . *Recent content on sharing.org <http://sharing.org> * *STWR’s annual review of 2014* <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQ6-1/c.aspx> Our latest annual review provides an overview of STWR’s activities over the course of 2014 as well as our key areas of focus for 2015, which includes ongoing research and writing projects alongside the promotion of STWR’s ‘global call for sharing’ campaign. *Heeding Christ’s teaching to share in the 21st century* <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQA-1/c.aspx> To address the epochal challenges of the twenty-first century, we will have to heed Christ’s simple message like never before—and finally share the world’s wealth and resources more equitably among us all. *Japanese translations of studies on the principle of sharing* <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQ7-1/c.aspx> Six new Japanese translations of Mohammed Mesbahi’s ongoing series of essays have now been published, totalling 16 translations in different languages to date. Mesbahi is currently working on an in-depth series of further studies on the principle of sharing that will be published on STWR’s website throughout 2015 and eventually culminate in a book. *Report: Sharing as our common cause* <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-342R1-GR70YU-1FGGQ8-1/c.aspx> This report demonstrates how a call for sharing underpins many existing initiatives for social justice, environmental stewardship, true democracy and global peace. On this basis, STWR argues that sharing should be more widely promoted as a common cause that can help connect civil society organisations and social movements under a united call for change. Fwd: [tapas] Elections in Greece
by P2P Foundation mailing list 25 Jan '15

25 Jan '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: George Papanikolaou <georgepapani(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Jan 25, 2015 at 2:24 AM Subject: [tapas] Elections in Greece To: tapas(a)lists.p2pfoundation.net Dear friends, As you already know tomorrow is the elections day in Greece. First I have to thank you all for your solidarity during these difficult years for the Greek people. Even if there might be some uncertainty on the outcome of the forthcoming negotiations, the most important issue for us is the restoration of democracy and human rights in the country. The latest news are that we are expecting a spectacular victory of SYRIZA tomorrow with a difference of 7-10% from the second party. The conservative party shows a picture of accelerated electoral decomposition the last 3-4 days which is expected to reinforce smaller parties, especially the crypto neoliberal, non-democratic party "Potami" headed by a former TV journalist. Αn instrument of the Greek cleptocracy with the basic aim to prevent the formation of a SYRIZA government. The Greek cleptocracy and their allies, especially in Germany, are clearly investing in the defensive strategy to force the formation of an alliance government as a first step to undermine a left government in Greece. The major question of the elections tomorrow is whether SYRIZA will manage to get the absolute majority of the seats. This depends on : 1. The percentage that SYRIZA will manage to get 2. The percentage of the votes in parties that will not be represented in the parliament (parties with less than 3%). A higher percentage benefits the first party. It will be the first time in the last 30 years that neoliberalism will be defeated in a European country. It is a major step forward but it is only the beginning of an even more difficult battle ahead. We will never manage to win if there is no mobilization of people in your countries and if you do not manage to initiate a wave of progressive political change in your own countries. I think that the central idea of SYRIZAs campaign ('Hope is on the way! Greece is changing, Europe is changing") is accurately reflecting this fact. https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/top-p2p-books-you-should-have-read-in-2014-1… The Top P2P Books of the Year will be serialized this year. people in cc, you will find your books in this list, Item is available as of tonight or next morning: would be great if anyone has the time to give it a better lay-out and look: *Our book of the year is Humanizing the Economy by John Restakis. See why below.* 2014 was definitely the year of the commons – cooperative convergence. Two objective trends especially since the systemic economic crisis of 2008 are the revival of the commons, mostly driven through peer production; AND a revival of cooperatives and cooperativism, which had been subjected to a certain decline and even a neoliberal degeneration in the period since the 1980’s. What was new in 2014 is that these two sectors started talking and looking at each other. At the P2P Foundation, we call for a new synthesis in the form of open cooperativism, i.e. cooperatives which consciously and structurally co-produce commons, as pioneered by the Catalan Integral Cooperative or the Allianza Solidaria in Quito. The best record of this, which we don’t count as a book, is the following report of a in-depth convergence conversation by leading commoners and cooperativists: ** 0. “TOWARD AN OPEN CO-OPERATIVISM <http://www.boell.de/sites/default/files/open_co-operativism_report_january_…>. A New Social Economy Based on Open Platforms, Co-operative Models and the Commons. A Report on a Commons Strategies Group Workshop Berlin, Germany, August 27-28, 2014. By Pat Conaty and David Bollier. CSG / Boll Foundation / Foundation pour le Progres de l’Homme, 2014.* We strongly urge everyone to read this. *Our top book about the cooperative commonwealth tradition is paradoxically a book that appeared in 2010, but that strongly deserves a second life.* It is the marvelously well written book by John Restakis, entitled “Humanizing the Economy”, which places cooperativism in its historical tradition, and presents innovations such as solidarity cooperatives. Learn there about the cooperative tradition in Emilia-Romagna and the innovative Seikatsu movement in Japan. Since, John Restakis has developed a much stronger understanding of the commons and worked with the P2P Foundation and myself on the commons-cooperative convergence. The evidence of this lies in our P2P-Foundation published e-book on the Commons Transition, which has strong chapters by John Restakis on the convergence of the commons economy, the partner state approach, and the cooperative economy. Finally, our own book, “Network Society and Future Scenarios for a Collaborative Economy” co-authored by Vasilis Kostakis, gives a detailed vision of expectations related to this cooperative commons economy: *will it fullfill its promise, of fall victim to the forces which extract its value for purely private benefit of large multinationals of netarchical capital?* *1. Network Society and Future Scenarios for a Collaborative Economy <http://p2pfoundation.net/Network_Society_and_Future_Scenarios_for_a_Collabo…>. By Vasilis Kostakis and Michel Bauwens. Palgrave Macmillan, 2014* The second trend, the revival of the commons, produced two very important book this year, by David Bollier and Jeremy Rifkin. David Bollier’s book is a very well written general introduction of what ‘commoning’ means for human life, comparable to these great classics like The Gift by Lewis Hyde; Jeremy Rifkin’s book may not go deep enough in the problematic transition, but gives a great historical introduction to changes in the modes of production, and why the commons is now an economic fact, destined to grow not just in the so-called ‘immaterial’ economy, but also in the physical economy, through the ‘margical cost’ effects of distributed energy and 3D printing. ** 2. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] Labor in the Global Digital Economy: The Cybertariat Comes of Age by Ursula Huws
by P2P Foundation mailing list 24 Jan '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Örsan Şenalp <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Jan 15, 2015 at 2:50 AM Subject: [Networkedlabour] Labor in the Global Digital Economy: The Cybertariat Comes of Age by Ursula Huws To: "networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org" <networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org > Have to share this impatiently, Ursula. Congratulations: Labor in the Global Digital Economy: The Cybertariat Comes of Age by Ursula Huws out from Monthly Press! - http://monthlyreview.org/books/pb4635/ For every person who reads this text on the printed page, many more will read it on a computer screen or mobile device. It’s a situation that we increasingly take for granted in our digital era, and while it is indicative of the novelty of twenty-first-century capitalism, it is also the key to understanding its driving force: the relentless impulse to commodify our lives in every aspect. Ursula Huws ties together disparate economic, cultural, and political phenomena of the last few decades to form a provocative narrative about the shape of the global capitalist economy at present. She examines the way that advanced information and communications technology has opened up new fields of capital accumulation: in culture and the arts, in the privatization of public services, and in the commodification of human sociality by way of mobile devices and social networking. These trends are in turn accompanied by the dramatic restructuring of work arrangements, opening the way for new contradictions and new forms of labor solidarity and struggle around the planet. Labor in the Global Digital Economy is a forceful critique of our dizzying contemporary moment, one that goes beyond notions of mere connectedness or free-flowing information to illuminate the entrenched mechanisms of exploitation and control at the core of capitalism. Following on her brilliant The Making of a Cybertariat, a modern classic in the analysis of class and gender, work and consumption, Huws turns her sharp eye to the present crisis into which the cybertariat ‘has come of age.’ Rich in theoretical and methodological insights, Labor in the Global Digital Economy carefully guides us through the world of transnational business, value chains, creative, precarious and knowledge labor, self-service consumers, and consumption workers. Challenging accepted thinking and providing enough wisdom to fill several volumes, Huws has once again demonstrated her preeminence among analysts of work and inequality in digital capitalism. —Vincent Mosco, author, To the Cloud: Big Data in a Turbulent World Ursula Huws is a global treasure: her essays collected here continue her several decades of scholarship analyzing the impact of technological change on women and workers. This book brings her prescient Marxist feminist theorizing to a wider audience. It is a must read for anyone who cares about what the future holds for workers in the digital era. —Gina Neff, author, Venture Labor: Work and the Burden of Risk in Innovative Industries As always, Huws has a treasury of insights to offer. Use this book as a manual for understanding how the alliance of capital and digitization is reshaping the landscape of labor. —Andrew Ross, author, Creditocracy and the Case for Debt Refusal Ursula Huws is without peer as an analyst of life in contemporary capitalism. —Leo Panitch, York University; editor, Socialist Register _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
