Fwd: Does Your Community Export Energy? Here's One That Will

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: John Robb (Resilient Communities) <admin(a)resilientcommunities.com> Date: Wed, Apr 17, 2013 at 3:06 AM Subject: Does Your Community Export Energy? [image: printlogo-1329425488189.jpeg] Does Your Community Export Energy? Here's One That Will By John Robb Here's a question to get you thinking about something other than the return of terrorism. It's similar to a question that I've asked before<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9212/4025feb568ed57c1/1935084/…> . *Is your community an energy exporter?* Seems ludicrous, doesn't it? It isn't. It's a very serious question. Your community *should* be exporting energy. The technology and the economics are now favorable for it. So, if your community isn't, it's time to change that. Here's an example of one way to do it. *Lancaster* There's a small city in California called Lancaster. They've got a dynamic mayor that's geared up to do something to reverse his community's slide into economic oblivion (a trend across the US and Europe). To do that, he's turning Lancaster into an energy exporter. They are installing inexpensive solar panel systems all over the city. Further, every new home built must produce *at least* a kW of solar power. They didn't do this overnight. The effort started three years ago with some pilot projects -- city hall, churches, and local businesses -- that yielded experience and good results. The most recent project was the installation of over 32,000 panels on the city's 25 schools. Together they generate 7.5 megawatts of power. Here's a picture of a Lancaster school with solar panel carports (they found that these were much easier to install inexpensively than rooftop systems on old construction). [image: Lancaster Schools]<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9214/6a7add944dd36b9c/1935084/…> To drive down costs, the city created a municipal power company called the Lancaster Power Authority<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9216/7f7af1a1f2f5d4eb/1935084/…>. A municipal utility allows the city to negotiate aggressively with solar equipment vendors and service providers. The utility also serves as a new business incubator to help entrepreneurs with innovative ways to generate solar power get the support and help they need to prototype it. The way things are going right now, Lancaster will soon be sell more electricity to neighbors than it uses. Also, given the scale involved, I suspect Lancaster will be able to extract premium pricing as a power producer long term (solar power can sell at a premium price many times what it retails for when it coincides with peak usage periods). This is just one approach, but I hope it gives you some ideas for how to build a community that can power itself forward. Yours, JOHN ROBB [image: JR Small]<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9218/829d4427e947b202/1935084/…> PS: If you like thinking at the global level, here's something to think about: There are 2 ways to save the world. A) reduce/cut back or B) produce more locally. One works, the other doesn't. One creates a vibrant and dynamic future that will be widely adopted, the other doesn't/won't. Hint: People that produce more locally tend to use less of everything they produce. Why? They appreciate it more. For your convenience, John Robb will deliver his articles straight to your inbox each time a post is made! I look forward to the ongoing conversation and you're always welcome to post your comments at www.resilientcommunities.com<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/5813/031e0b62f30ad32c/1935084/…>. Seeking Job Opportunities embodying the P2P Philosophy
by Brent Shambaugh 15 Apr '13

15 Apr '13

Dear all, I promised someone I'd look for a job. Please forgive me if it is out of place. I'm looking for opportunities that would allow me to pursue a P2P philosophy. This has been challenging. I have a MS in Chemical Engineering with a focus on polymer processing. I have a blog: http://adistributedeconomy.blogspot.com/ that I have been working on. I am forcing myself to narrow things down. Right now I feel visual interfaces (e.g. http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-694/) and Webpayments (e.g. Payswarm and Ripple) are most important. My LinkedIN profile is: www.linkedin.com/pub/brent-shambaugh/9/125/9b9/ -- Brent Shambaugh I've worked with polymers, I teach chemistry, I'm currently researching how to build better economies. Fwd: Democracy, Peace and the Iroquois - teleconference Apr 17
by Michel Bauwens 14 Apr '13

14 Apr '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tom Atlee <cii(a)igc.org> Date: Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 3:37 AM Subject: Democracy, Peace and the Iroquois - teleconference Apr 17 To: undisclosed list <cii(a)igc.org> Dear friends, An invitation to speak has brought me back to some roots of my work I haven't revisited in some time - the Iroquois Confederacy and its recognition of the intimate tie between democracy and peace - collective wisdom and collective tranquility. Peace between people requires their respectful, insight-seeking conversation. It requires, as Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Iroquois tells us, that "we meet and just keep talking until there's nothing left but the obvious truth." Lyons also notes - to us self-proclaimed modern people - that "The Earth has all the time in the world. We don't." I strongly recommend his brief, vivid and moving video: http://vimeo.com/50460060 (note for those who have trouble with online videos: in the lower right it give the option to use Flash or HTML5 video players). Few Americans or people in other modern "democracies" realize how much our government structures owe to the Iroquois. We talk about ancient Greece giving us democracy. True, ancient Athens gave us the idea of "one man one vote" when adopting laws. But some scholars suggest that the Iroquois gave us our federal system (an alliance of free states under one greater power), the idea of "balance of powers", and much of our sense of personal privacy and liberty from government interference, as well as the idea of taking turns while speaking in an assembly. http://www.co-intelligence.org/CIPol_IndiansOrigDemoc.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Law_of_Peace We might note that America's founders chose not to adopt the Athenian or Iroquois approaches to selecting leaders - oligarchy-resistant random selection in the case of Athens and patriarchy-resistant dialogue among women in the case of the Iroquois - nor did they adopt the Iroquois practices of consensus decision-making and women's close monitoring of male leadership. Unlike both the Greeks and the American founders, the Iroquois League gave women real political power. My own activism was born in the peace movements of the 1950s and 60s. It was only in the 1980s and 90s that I realized that real peace (not just the absence of war) and real democracy (not just elections) were intimately related. In their finest forms, both peace and democracy involve people successfully co-creating good lives and futures together. http://www.co-intelligence.org/CIPol_PeaceDemocCommons.html This congruence between peace and democracy was recognized many centuries ago by the legendary Native American prophet and diplomat known as The Great Peacemaker. With his spokesman, the renowned orator Hiawatha, he drew together five major warring nations in what is now northeastern North America into the great and lasting Iroquois League known as the Haudenosaunee - meaning "the people of the longhouse" or "they are building a longhouse". Tradition says The Great Peacemaker convened tribal leaders around the Tree of Peace, under which they buried their weapons and adopted The Great Peacemaker's Great Law of Peace, their oral (and now written) constitution. Among other things, the Great Law of Peace established procedures for cultural unity, conflict resolution and making collective decisions to govern the entire League - resulting in an elegant merger of peace and democracy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Peacemaker On April 17, Co-Intelligence Institute board member Manju Lyn Bazzell and I will be sharing our views about 21st century approaches that embody the kind of peace-nurturing democratic wisdom The Great Peacemaker pioneered so many years ago, informed by the best that Athens, too, had to offer, and integrated with emerging understandings about how to actually do all this in societies containing millions of people - especially in the face of increasing hardships, innovations, and extinction-level issues. We'll be talking in a Maestro teleconference format with Dr. Lauren Oliver, a major organizer of Peacemaker Circles, a growing network of modern peacemakers inspired by the traditions of The Great Peacemaker and the social change artistry vision and practices of Jean Houston. The teleconference will include opportunities for discussion among listeners and for questions to Manju, Lauren and myself. You are very welcome to join us. It should be interesting. Coheartedly, Tom ========== Edited from the full CirclesWork newsletter at http://conta.cc/YgcdgP April’s Eminent Peacemaker Teleconference Wednesday, April 17, 2013 5:30pm-7pm Pacific Time Peace and Democracy Tom Atlee and Manju Lyn Bazzell in dialogue with YOU! Tom Atlee, founder of the Co-Intelligence Institute (co-intelligence.org) in dialogue with Manju Lyn Bazzell, Dr. Lauren Oliver, & YOU evokes our wisdom on peace & democracy You can sign up for the Teleconference series here: http://myaccount.maestroconference.com/conference/register/TYDFIMWUAUIP49Z As we continue following the Great Peacemaker… founding the Iroquois League by planting the Great Tree of Peace, the Peacemaker invited all the warriors to throw their weapons under the tree – to assure they cast away all thoughts of making war, and the hatred and enmity that fed them. War no more! Peace and democracy were birthed as one, by the Iroquois League, and detailed in a consensus-based constitution co-created with the 5 original tribes. Not legalistic, the Iroquois Constitution sets out a way of life that keeps peace alive in daily cooperative action & in Council (see note below). Tom Atlee, our Eminent Peacemaker on April 17, founder of the Co-Intelligence Institute, will model his commitment to conversation and council in dialogue with Manju Lyn Bazzel and Lauren Oliver, igniting our Peacemaker community with democratic praxis that embodies peace. In his books Empowering Public Wisdom and The Tao of Democracy and on his websites his explorations range from leadership, governance and economics to spirituality, dialogue, and activism - all derived from his vision of evolving wholeness and the role of human conversation in co-creating our world. After Tom Atlee’s Vietnam draft resistance, the watershed event in his life was the 1986 cross-country Great Peace March, where he and 400 others learned circle process from a Native American marcher and experienced palpable collective intelligence. Since then he has explored many ways we can be smarter and wiser together than we are separately, and how peace and democracy are both about co-creating our shared lives. Tom sees his work - and the work of The Great Peacemaker - as evolution becoming conscious of itself. He lives in a consensus co-op household in Eugene, OR – with a changing population of friendly people, dogs, cats, chickens, plants, and thousands of books – and in his partner Dulcy's rural dome. Manju Lyn Bazzell joins the dialogue, bringing experience as a talk show host, non-profit Executive Director, organizational consultant and award-winning inner-city schoolteacher. Her vision: if we can imagine a better world, it is within our reach. Serving on Boards of Directors including The Co-Intelligence Institute, and featured in both INC. and Entrepreneur magazines, Manju's skills in large group processes, communications & human technologies bring co-intelligence to governance and economic systems. Join us April 17 for great dialogue! ---------- >From "Manual for the Peacemaker" by Jean Houston and Peggy Rubin "Living Democracy and Peace" The Great Peacemaker and Hiawatha worked with the people to create a way of living to sustain peace and democracy and meet the needs of all. Weapons and enmity were buried beneath the Great Tree of Peace. Peacemaker envisioned a watchful eagle atop the Great Tree of Peace, with eyes alert to the slightest sign of danger to the tree's roots, or, to peace. The Great Peacemaker urged people to maintain friendships energetically. Bonds of community were designed to keep alliances strong, including: * Living in the Longhouse; this required daily cooperation and fostered an ideal of sharing all resources equally. * Adopting the Condolence Ceremony, to let go of old insults and wrongs. Mourning grief fosters sympathy & healing. The Great Council empowered and governed the Confederacy. The Council - meeting under the Great Tree of Peace - included guidelines and checks and balances: * Regular meetings * Representatives from each tribe - with one vote for each tribe. * Leadership: Two leaders for each tribe, with clear safeguards to assure they be servants of the people. * Set pattern for meetings of the Great Council. * Open with thanksgiving. * Songs commemorate League unity. * Roll call of the tribes. * Proposals made holding wampum meant speaking truth; & no interruption. * Disagreements were sent back to the point at which they arose. * The Great Council was adjourned at nightfall to avoid raised tempers when tired. Iroquois live democracy and peace daily, still. ________________________________ Tom Atlee, The Co-Intelligence Institute, POB 493, Eugene, OR 97440 site: http://www.co-intelligence.org / blog: http://tom-atlee.posterous.com Read EMPOWERING PUBLIC WISDOM - http://empoweringpublicwisdom.us THE TAO OF DEMOCRACY - http://www.taoofdemocracy.com and REFLECTIONS ON EVOLUTIONARY ACTIVISM - http://evolutionaryactivism.com Please support our work. Fw: Banking

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Becky Jarvis - 38 Degrees <action(a)38degrees.org.uk> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Friday, 12 April 2013, 17:25 Subject: Banking Dear friend, It was a “colossal failure” of management. The trio of top bankers to blame for the collapse of HBOS were “reckless” and “deluded”. Lots of us have been thinking along these lines for years - and now, a parliamentary commission has taken the words right out of our mouths. [1] The MPs and Lords on the commission have singled out Lord Stevenson, Sir James Crosby and Andy Hornby as the ex-bosses responsible. And since the news broke, it just keeps getting worse and worse. Today we even found out they’re still being awarded “bonuses for going bust”. [2] The banking regulator has the power to stop these men working in finance again, but they’ll be coming under pressure not to make a fuss from powerful banking lobbyists. But together, we can show them that taxpayers, who own a staggering 41% of HBOS, want these bankers to face a City ban. Sign the petition now: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/m/74c04e40/2d40752f/5f7bb50f/46657e0f/… MPs and Lords have said that these ex-bosses “should be barred” from the City. The regulator is feeling the heat, but so far they’ve not made a move. We can intensify the pressure they’re under to make the decision fast. Together, we have the people power to make the regulator squirm. [3] All of us paid to bail out the banks. And many of us are feeling the pain. Let’s make sure that these super-rich City boys are properly held to account for their failings. The three bankers at the heart of HBOS’ collapse are only the tip of the iceberg of our broken banking system. 38 Degrees members will continue to work together to clean up the banks for good. We know it’s possible. [4] Let’s make sure we don’t let these ex-bosses get away with it. Pixelache Festival 16-19th May 2013, Helsinki (Finland) and Tallinn-Naissaar (Estonia)
by andrew paterson 12 Apr '13

12 Apr '13

Pixelache Helsinki welcomes participants to join in the four day trans-disciplinary festival during 16th -19th May 2013. This year the festival will take place as a dual-city event in both Helsinki (Finland) and Tallinn-Naissaar (Estonia), including a ferry journey between both cities. http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/ The overall festival theme is entitled 'Facing North - Facing South'. With this theme, Pixelache expands it’s on-going 'Signals from the South' programme, that has focused on presenting media, art and technology projects from Africa, South America and Asia since 2009. It explores further the relationships between South and North, looking at these notions from various perspectives, including geo-political, cultural, economical, both on global, regional and local level. http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/facing-north-facing-south-introductio… The Helsinki section of the festival organised around the Suvilahti area (16.-17.May) consists of several events, including presentations, workshops and guest-curated programme by trans-national Bricolabs Network . Members of Bricolabs will be present from various European as well as Latin American countries and many others, from Pakistan, Mexico, Indonesia etc will participate in discussions during the conference planned for 17th May on the theory and practice of networks. A process orientated and open approach to creating (making) will be conveyed through “brico-things” an exhibition (collaboratively curated) opening on the evening of 15th May. Workshops & Demos on 16th May will offer opportunities to learn, discuss and share ideas on digital fabrication & plastic recycling, open source tools for festivals and more! http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/guest-curated-programme-by-bricolabs-… http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/exhibitions/ http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/workshops/ The Tallinn-side of the festival (18.-19. May) will be based on previous unconference/bar camp-style experiments in recent years called 'Camp Pixelache'. The main venue for this 'camp' part will be a small nature-reserve island near to Tallinn called Naissaar. The infrastructure on the island allows for about 100 people to participate. We are still calling out for presentations and workshops proposals for Camp Pixelache. http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/camp-2013/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naissaar Three keynote speakers have also been invited to give presentations in three different festival locations: Escher Tsai, Master of Art History of National Taiwan University of Art, devoted into digital art research, promotion and creation will present in Helsinki on 16.5 at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. Spatial Intelligence Unit's and Kristi Grišakov's keynote is the first public Tallinn-Helsinki twin city presentation and discussion to be held on a common ground, an in-between place – the ferry between the two cities on 17.5. On Naissaar, rumoured to be “Terra Feminarum” (the island’s Estonian name literally translates as ‘island of women’), Mary Mellor, Social Science Professor at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) will address issues of alternative, green and feminist economics. http://www.pixelache.ac/festival-2013/keynotes/ Welcome!

An initiative to promote freedom of knowledge (or free knowledge) and peer-to-peer collaboration for the creation and management of the commons. very exciting development: http://www.shareable.net/blog/unmonasteries-collaborating-for-the-glocal-go… "Yes, the collaborative movement has extended into monastic life, at least an updated, social enterprise version of it. Situated in Matera, Italy, the first official unMonastery aims to provide a select group of changemakers with a place to live, eat and work together." i hope we can collaborate with friends from: http://emergingleaderlabs.org/
