________________________________ From: Narendra Khot <nvkhot(a)gmail.com> To: Narendra Khot <nvkhot(a)gmail.com> Sent: Wednesday, 27 March 2013, 14:39 Subject: [Arthakranti] Fwd: Cypriot lesson: Gold is like a Swiss account for you and me Thus far this year, gold has lost 5 percent of its value in rupee terms. Prices of 22-carat gold in Mumbai are quoting around Rs 27,000 per 10 gm (around Rs 29,500 for 24-carat), and could fall further. Why is this happening? Is it time to abandon gold as an investment avenue? I think not. While no one in his right mind will advocate gold as the only form of investment, this writer believes that it has to form a good 5-10 percent component of one's investment portfolio - largely as a form of inflation hedge in aclimate of financial repression and the flood of printed money which is debasing currency values. The Cyprus bailout is a wake-up call. One fine day, the government just pounced on depositors holding more than €100,000 in their accounts (below €100,000 they were insured). Nearly €4.2 billion in such deposits in Laiki Bank, which is to be closed down, will be shifted to a “bad bank” - meaning they may not receive any of their money. Deposits of under €100,000 will be shifted to the Bank of Cyprus, All other debtors of Laiki may get zilch when the bank is fully wound up. If governments can just seize your money, it makes eminent personal sense to keep some of it in forms that can't be easily confiscated. Gold is one option. However, there is a more subversive reason for wanting to buy gold - it is essentially a vote of no-confidence in government. Gold is the relatively poor man's Swiss account. When it comes to Tata, Birla, Ambani or any high net worth individual (HNIs), if India is not a good place to keep your money for whatever reason, you can go abroad. Your companies can invest in other countries formally. But HNIs can salt their money away clandestinely in the Cayman Islands or the Bahamas. If you are more careless, you can even try the Swiss banks. The big boys of India Inc have said they are not interested in investing in India - in almost as many words. Earlier this month, Kumar Mangalam Birla, had this to say: “Country risk for India just now is pretty elevated and chances are that for deployment of capital you would look to see if there is an asset overseas rather than in India." "We are in 36 countries around the world. We haven't seen such uncertainty and lack of transparency in policy anywhere,” he told Bloomberg TV in aninterview. Earlier, Cipla chief Yusuf Hamied, a pharma industry pioneer, began waving goodbye to India, and said so. “The tax policies and lack of basic infrastructure are huge problems in India. Because of lack of prudent tax and stable policies, all big Indian companies are going abroad. The time has now come for us to say goodbye to India,” he told Business Standard. Before him Rata Tata told Financial Times that he was frustrated with the investment climate in India. While Tata, Birla and Hamied were essentially talking about their corporate investments, the logic applies to individual savings too. HNIs can take their money elsewhere, ordinary mortals like us can't. This is why we vote our no-trust by buying gold. It's our Swiss bank account, our Cayman subsidiary that the government can't probably touch. This is why the government is trying its damnedest to prevent us from buying gold by raising import duties. It is calling us anti-national for trying to protect our savings, by ring-fencing our money from financial repression. Even while inflation is in double-digits, the government is busy cutting interest rates, and making the value of our money even lesser. The current fall in the value of gold should be good news for people who have cash to spare. Consider gold's performance over the last eight or nine years. It has given an annual average return of 16.9 percent, and only this year has the return actually been negative - at minus 5 percent so far in rupee terms. In most calendar years since 2005 (see the chart here), returns on gold have ranged from 10 percent to 31 percent. This is not to say you won't make losses this year or even next year, but the fall helps us cock a snook at fiscal repression in the long run. It is not wise to put all your money in assets denominated in rupee over the long run. http://www.firstpost.com/investing/cypriot-lesson-gold-is-like-a-swiss-acco… Warm RegardsAniruddha Hirlekar __._,_.___ Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a new topic Messages in this topic (3) Recent Activity: Visit Your Group Switch to: Text-Only, Daily Digest • Unsubscribe • Terms of Use . __,_._,___

I like the way Peter Block<http://twitter.com/peter_block> broadly frames the ideal common ground of a productive, engaged community, paraphrasing him: *“In terms of possibilities, what can we create in this place together?”* As we unpack the Community dimension, let’s start first in the Social Change context (column E, in the above framework), and address questions that would be associated with cell “E2″ .. - *Q1. What cultural forces are constructive in a community vs. problematic?* - *Q2. How important are relationships in a community vs. focus on specific topics/issues?* - *Q3. fyi: ecoeco_platform specs
by flawer 25 Mar '13

hia! n joy! http://sharewiki.org/en/Ecoeco_platform full text: With reliable shareabilities standards(*) we could experience nearer the more meaningful use of private property standards for communicating with people because of the needing of material or inmaterials things from others. Basic barter, currencism and for frees are the conventional managements shareful.be more wants to improve. I.e. instead of forcing people acting as: -What is mine is mine and i can give it to someone else who then would think it's only hers, we propose: -It is more productive for you to share everything you own, you just need to choose the right shareful clause for each thing. and then act towards others like: -This is mine and i want you to feel it as yours too while you use it, but 'yours' doesn't mean you can deny others using it at your free will, you should allow and encourage others to shareful it too. The agencying of ads is a very participatory and communicative experience yet to be further enjoyed in ecoeco platforms. It consist in you copmfortably publishing offers and wants from other people you are regularly communicating with outside the ecoeco platform. I.e. -I publish my mums barter offers and her shareful wants from my user because she doesn't like computers The thresholding is a very useful feature for stocks and specially for gathering people together for a something common, such as consumer groups, planned collective buyings, crowdfunding, etc. The estating of a certain mass of needed people or parts to reach a something provoques an incentive for achieving that something with the counter countdown, automates the dealing (i.e. -I join a wanted threshold from an ad of yours and i ask you for getting 3 kilos of pears from you). Thresholds expiriness doesn't need to be forced, they could be just an optional field. It'd be enhaced with further specifying a posible diverting option if the wanted mass is not reached in a certain time, for not having to lose what has been achieved meanwhile never having completed it fully. The ads ownership sharing is another not much enjoyed featuring anywhere. It could tend to make a more communitarian looking model for people managing their things. At least, it will be always an interesting available option while dealing with others. It could also save the publishing of too similar ads, and so, encourage people working on the same things to join more instead of seeing themselves as competing rivals. The active use of a platform wide corporate user * that receives and routes resources is a permanent challenge for the platform. It is normally foreseen as the one having the or too much power in the market / platform. In fact, at least in decentralized environments, there are always administrators taking often a non interacting role. We propose Admin to be an active user having an extensive crowdsourced protocol of how is (s)he (we) going to do* when you donate something to the Admin. This could serve for saving users federations bureaucracies (while not impeding them) and would be providing guidance to other people grouping themselves for a common ad (less ads, higher quality) that would at the same time provide guidance for user Admin to copy what they do. When thinking in inteligenting the semantics in any of the browsable elements of the platform (i.e. -You may be interested in...) unmaterial categories relationing (someone's own axiology) would do peers better networking than with material excuses (ads, ads categories and tags), so they should have more weight in the relationing analysis. I.e. -You would be more interested in communicating with John, who is interested in developing very similar human values than you. So we need to implement inmaterial developings in the platform* (and not just rely in material issues for relating peers) and more importantly give that type of content a preference (or more weight) in the relationing. It wouldn't be bad to implement flow* featruing for the inmaterial developments, it would just another tool for easing that. Also, it is also proved that implicit activity in the platform (i.e. -John uses to login at the same time as you) tends to be more valueable than the explicit activity (i.e. -Mary likes the same things as you like). The specifying of qualifiability standards* is something more transparent and more difficult to game than vague qualifiability standards for the advertised products. An easer tool for this is a parametered ecological degree table for all ads qualifications that could be commonly used by all peers. For securing the quality of the qualifications made by any peer, we should allow the crowdsourcing of those qualifications (i.e. allowing negative comments on qualifications), and also allowing users complaining about fake or gamed qualifications from wishful or cracky other peers about their things and the table itself through a contact form, external forum* or else. With consistent qualifiabilty standards we could be featuring conditional force for directing the flow, simply with phrasing a clause on the terms of the platform estating that benefits arisen from the exchanging of those more corrupted things as the table estates have to be invested in more pure things. This featuring would give more transparency to the adverts and more importantly would enable the posibility of offering non ecological things or the selling of things for conventional corrupted money just if they are directed to develop some other more pure things with them (i.e. -I sell cocacola for euros, but i am forced to invest the benefits of that into an ecovillage project). This way we would be assuming the contextual present corruption that we all have in our daliy doings and would be recicling them, instead of keeping the platform for purity and forcing peers of managing their corruptions off platform.

Fwd: neotraditional conferences on land stewardship and taxation

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peter Challen <peterchallen(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Mar 22, 2013 at 10:31 AM Subject: To: Dear Friends, Here below, a reminder of the initiative by which we want to identify the universality in the truths the great faiths seek to share with each other and with many other people of good faith. Please do not let the accident of venue and day chosen detract from the ecumenical earnestness in which the examination of the biblically propounded Covenant of Trusteeship for 'everything under the rainbow' is proposed. We wanted a worship centre as the focus and Saturday was deemed the best day for a widely varied group to gather with adequate time to engage; and we selected three events to widen possibilities of attendance and to develop momentum with consultation between the events.. We apologise that there was no way we could make suitable choices for everyone in offering an open invitation. Our intention is to support as widely a representative gathering as we can assemble to work out the implications of the Covenant for our economic behaviour today and henceforth. The co-organisers hope that others will join in contributing to follow-up ecumenical events that might generate a momentum leading to the social reforms that all of the leaders of the three faiths are now identifying as necessary…. These three conferences are designed to examine how the three Abrahamic faiths laid the foundations for a moral economics in which nature was to be shared for the common good. · The conferences, held in London churches, will reveal that Jesus identified the rent of land as the sacred source of revenue for the community. What should be done to encourage religious leaders to honour that advocacy by the people who adhere to the Christian faith? · Islamic scholars elaborated the principles of Land Taxation a thousand years before Adam Smith – can this history be reintegrated into the ethics of Islamic economics? · The Covenant with God came at a price – a moral code of conduct. Can this Covenant solve the territorial dispute over the Holy Land today? The Chief Rabbi spoke recently of the Covenant requiring us 'to serve and conserve' the earth. *'A THEOLOGY OF LAND AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY ECONOMICS'* ////////////////////////////// 1] April 6th 10-4 at St Mary, Aldermary, City of London Honouring the Theology of the Land : *GOD & THE GOOD LIFE: THE AUDIT [1st of 3] - **250 places* Register on *http://god-and-the-goodlife.eventbrite.com/* ///////////////////////////////// 2] May 4th 10-2 at Christ Church North Southwark Honouring the Theology of the Land : *GREAT AWAKENINGS: THE APPLICATION [2nd of 3] - **150 places* *Registration on http://theologyofland2of3.eventbrite.com* /////////////////////////////// 3] June 1st 10-2 at St James, Piccadilly Honouring the Theology of the Land : *HOLY LAND: THE AFFIRMATION [3rd of 3] - **250 places* Registration on http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5506287454 * *///////////////////////////// Registration and donations can also be directly to *P B Challen *by this email address or to Canon P B Challen 21 Bousfield Rd. Booker is hoping to be the next U.S. senator from New Jersey. But the constituency he seems keenest to represent is the future itself. Perhaps more than any prominent American politician, Mr. Booker — the 43-year-old Democrat and mayor of the rust-coated, luck-starved city of Newark — has cultivated his brand as a leader of, by and for a new era. He tweets with something approaching the frequency of his own heartbeat, so much that his staff calls Twitter his girlfriend. He meditates. He balances old-school talk of God with new-age ideas of being “open to what the universe brings me.” He champions Big Data and knows how many consumer impressions he got last week. He gushes over what may be called the hipster economy: using technology to rent out bedrooms, borrow vacuum cleaners, share cars and raise seed capital. Educated at Stanford, Oxford and Yale, Mr. Booker is a model of self-propelled ascent in a postindustrial city where rises like his have grown ever rarer. In conversation, he might cite the writers James Baldwin and Langston Hughes; Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction; the business book “Built to Last”; ancient Roman history; and an African proverb about going fast alone but far together. Owing in part to the gap between his own sophistication and the travails of the city he has led since 2006, he has endured ceaseless speculation about whether Newark is merely a steppingstone. Now, as he turns his attention to a U.S. Senate race in 2014, the more interesting question may be whether a self-styled politician from the future can make it to the Washington of right now — and what a city of marble, pearls and power ties might make of him. Even as the Republican Party undergoes a time of soul-searching, self-flagellation and contestation, Mr. Booker’s emergence hints at schisms to come among Democrats. He represents the Googly-Facebookish wing of the party — liberal as ever in its views on issues like same-sex marriage<http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/s/same_sex_mar…>and abortion rights, but more libertarian than the old guard on economics, more trusting of markets than unions to improve lives, more reliant on the business jargon of “synergy” and “scale” than the language of activism and justice. Mr. Booker sounds like a new kind of Democrat, for example, when he says that running Newark has made him trust data more than his own liberal principles on the issue of reducing gun violence. When the Supreme Court struck down Washington’s gun ban in 2008, Mr. Booker’s initial reaction was horror: To allow handgun sales in an urban area was to tempt disaster. Then he sought data from his staff, and they challenged him: “We just did a quick look at all the shootings in my city and saw that nobody who legally went out and bought a handgun was involved in shootings.” “Here I would have gotten emotionally, politically charged up about a Supreme Court decision, but the data didn’t hold that,” he continued in a recent interview. “So I’ve become much more loyal to big data.” This is a strain of pragmatism that is different from what President Barack Obama ran on in 2008. It is less about coming together despite our differences, less about transcendence and more about thinking the way businesses do: doing the right thing, where the right thing is defined as what the spreadsheet shows. “The issue is not finding the answers,” Mr. Booker says. “It’s just growing them to scale.” On certain issues, as when speaking of same-sex marriage, Mr. Booker’s language retains the timbre of activism. “The story of America is this country founded in perfect ideals,” he said, but in “a savagely imperfect time.” The American project, in his estimation, is to close the gap between ideals and lived reality. But when Mr. Booker discusses the overwhelmingly poor, minority community he serves, talk of justice recedes behind talk of creating opportunity. He grew most excited in an hourlong conversation about so-called “collaborative consumption,” the spreading practice of renting, sharing and bartering things, like a bike or a spare bedroom, rather than owning them outright. Many in government have been wary of services like Airbnb, which, in allowing people to earn money renting out rooms, diverts funds from tax-paying, unionized, regulated hotels — as do similar services in transportation, finance and other spheres. But Mr. Booker believes such services give the less fortunate the chance to make ends meet without waiting for the return of union jobs that may never come back. “It’s actually helping all of us to enter a world of entrepreneurial interaction in a way that is so democratic,” he said. The mayor’s enthusiasm is not only a challenge to the regulatory state that his party has long championed. It also agitates against the conventional wisdom prevalent on the left that the poor need more protection from capitalism — and not, as Mr. Booker suggests, more access to capitalism. While many in his party advocate public works programs and the expansion of social insurance, the mayor prefers to speak about technology’s helping the poor help themselves. “People are now given the tools to control their economic destiny,” he says. His own destiny depends on whether such ideas resonate with New Jersey in the here and now — or sound like mere futurology. *Join an online conversation at http://anand.ly and follow on Twitter.com/anandwrites <http://www.twitter.com/anandwrites> * ** ** ** ** ** More in U.S. (1 of 28 articles)Chicago Says It Will Close 54 Public Schools<http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/22/education/chicago-says-it-will-close-54-p…> Read More »<http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/22/education/chicago-says-it-will-close-54-p…> Rick Ingrasci M.D., M.P.H.
