But it was also the subject of much debate. One of these critiques came from Heiner Flassbeck, a director at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. INET’s Rob Johnson responded to the criticism, saying that he “welcomes the challenge of such a creative thinker.” Johnson then delved into Flassbeck’s insights into the euro zone crisis and Flassbeck replied to Johnson on the INET Blog by more deeply exploring his suggestion that changes in wages and productivity – and the unneighborly German economic policies that drove them – were at the heart of what created the crisis. In a recent interview, INET Advisory Board member and Executive Director for Financial Stability at the Bank of England Andy Haldane took aim at the economics profession. “I think one of the great errors we as economists made in pursuing that was that we started believing the assumptions of economics, and saying things that made no intellectual sense,” Haldane said Read The Story © 2012 The Institute For New Economic Thinking | All Rights Reserved. ________________________________ Click to view this email in a browser Please do not reply to this message. Fw: [gang8] Interesting things

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Geoffrey Gardiner <geoffrey.gardiner(a)btinternet.com> To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, 12 August 2012, 9:37 Subject: Re: [gang8] Interesting things Dear Michael, Yes. I even thought of offering a paper for the Dijon conference in December but there are only three days left to send a draft. Below is what I have written so far. Not quite the same as your points, but they are all part of the same model. I suppose one could say that lowering interest rates makes those who already have assets richer on paper, but only if they liquidate and spend do they benefit from it. Those without assets find it harder to acquire any. And the people who have the assets now are those (like me!) who were made rich by having their loans inflated away as a result of the application of monetarist 'remedies' for inflation which had exactly the opposite result to what was expected. ************************** Has Quantitative Easing instigated the death of popular Capitalism? Quantitative Easing, the practice of central banks buying up debt, mostly government bonds, has revealed that the market rate of interest is negative in real terms, a fact concealed until now by administered discount rates set at higher levels than the market required. The reason for this is that saving, mostly contractual for pensions and life insurance, vastly exceeds the amount of saving needed to fund Real Capital Formation and all other private uses of saving. (Support this with figures from UK National Income Blue Book for 2010). With a negative real interest the logic behind pension funds and endowment assurance policies vanishes. Savings will diminish in value if they are invested in bonds, even indexed linked bonds. For the moment there are still positive yields on equity investment, but the pool of equities is too small to provide a solution of the problem. Equities are often already overpriced relative to their net tangible asset values. (Example Kraft.) Therefore funds invested in equities are increasingly likely to look like Ponzi schemes. Quantitative Easing was based on a misunderstanding of the banking system. (Explain). Can it be reversed, and if so will real interest rates become positive again. Probably not. Savings does not equal real investment but equals financial liabilities, which encompass both debt and equity provision. ***** You no doubt have seen that the yield on 2 year Danish government bonds is negative. As I am getting ready to go away to Edinburgh I cannot finish it off, but as you will doubtless be saying the same things, I do not have to worry. Geoff From: Michael Hudson <michael.hudson(a)earthlink.net> To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, 11 August 2012, 17:07 Subject: Re: [gang8] Interesting things Dear Geoffrey, You use a good term, Monetary capital gains. that in fact was what I was referring to, not rising “real” asset prices. I was simply applying the financial principle of “total returns”: income + monetary capital gains. As central banks have driven down the interest rate, they have created capital gains by raising the capitalization rate of a given income (at the lower interest rate), while national treasuries and local authorities have cut property taxes. This has created Monetary capital gains without any real growth in productive capacity at all. The effect of monetary capital gains on the “real” economy is to oblige homeowners to go further into debt to buy housing, and also — as you have pointed out -- to oblige pension funds (and pensioners) to save much more in order to secure a given retirement income. Fw: [gang8] The Chicago Plan Revisited
by robert searle 17 Aug '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Gunnar Tomasson <gunnar.tomasson(a)verizon.net> To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, 16 August 2012, 3:33 Subject: [gang8] The Chicago Plan Revisited Dear Gang. I just posted the following message to Facebook. Gunnar The Chicago Plan Revisited In a recent Working Paper entitled "The Chicago Plan Revisited" (WP/12/202), IMF staff members Jaromir Benes and Michael Kumhof spoil an otherwise interesting paper by giving an account of the monetary ideas of Adam Smith and Jeremy Bentham which conflict directly with Bentham's own writings on the subject matter. In my view, the point at issue is of fundamental importance as the world community searches for answers to the monetary chaos that has evolved in the post-Bretton Woods era of the past forty years: Do we seek answers in resurgent STATISM in monetary matters, as in the United States (Federal Reserve Board) and the European Union (European Central Bank) at present, or should we first seek to UNDERSTAND the flaws in post-Bretton Woods world monetary arrangements for which STATE and PRIVATE sector agencies are jointly responsible? If Alan Greenspan was correct - as I think he was - when he stated in October 2008 that "the whole intellectual edifice [of mainstream monetary economics] collapsed last summer [in 2007]", it remains for the technical reasons for the collapse to be understood. In this respect, the differences in economic, social and technical circumstances between the 1930s and now are so vast that it is more likely than not that the shape of robust monetary reform in the months and years ahead may be one that the best economics minds of the 1930s could not begin to imagine. Below is an extract from the Benes/Kumhof paper followed by extracts from my own Working Paper prepared at the IMF in the 1980s. *** It was the English Free Coinage Act of 1666, which placed control of the money supply into private hands, and the founding of the privately controlled Bank of England in 1694, that first saw a major sovereign relinquishing monetary control, not only to the central bank but also to the private banking interests behind it. The following centuries would provide ample opportunities to compare the results of government and private control over money issuance. The results for the United Kingdom are quite clear. Shaw (1896) examined the record of monarchs throughout English history, and found that, with one exception (Henry VIII), the king had used his monetary prerogative responsibly for the benefit of the nation, with no major financial crises. On the other hand, Del Mar (1895) finds that the Free Coinage Act inaugurated a series of commercial panics and disasters which to that time were completely unknown, and that between 1694 and 1890 twenty-five years never passed without a financial crisis in England. The principal advocates of this system of private money issuance were Adam Smith (1776) and Jeremy Bentham (1818), wwhose arguments were based on a fallacious notion of commodity money. (pp. 15-16) Comment. The authors have not done their homework on the monetary ideas of Adam Smith as presented in his Wealth of Nations in embryonic form for they have nothing to do with "the fallacious notion of commodity money". In mature form, these ideas were set forth by Jeremy Bentham, who in 1787 wrote to Adam Smith on related issues as follows: "Instead therefore of pretending to owe you nothing, I shall begin with acknowledging, that, as far as your track coincides with mine, I shall come much nearer the truth, were I to say I owed you everything." In a working paper prepared at the IMF in the 1980s, I outlined Bentham´s ideas in part as follows: Bentham's essay entitled "Institute of Political Economy" contains a formal definition of its subject matter similar in essence to Keynes' concept of the "Theory of Economics" and its application in the real world: "Political economy," Bentham wrote, "is at once a science and an art. The value of the science has for its efficient cause and measure the subserving the art." Or, less formally, economic science must be rigorous in its analytical aspects, or it is not deserving of that name. Economic science must be applied with imagination in the real world, or it is a waste of time and money. In "The Institute of Political Economy," Bentham also outlined in summary form the essence of the ideas on the analytical links between "fresh" money, employment, output, and prices, whose "propriety" James Mill had questioned: I. "If the fresh money, on the occasion of the first employment or expenditure made of it, is employed in purchases, the immediate effect of which is to make an immediate addition to the mass of really productive capital, it then makes by the amount of such purchase a clear addition to the growing mass of real wealth, beyond what would have existed otherwise." II. "If the fresh money, on the occasion of the first employment or expenditure made of it, is employed in purchases, the immediate effect of which is not to make any immediate addition to the mass of really productive capital, it then makes no addition to the growing mass of real wealth." III. "No sooner, however, does it ["fresh money"] pass on from this its primary destination (that of adding to real capital) to the other, viz. that of adding to unproductive consumption, than its power of producing an addition to the mass of the matter of real wealth is at an end: thenceforward and for ever it keeps on contributing by its whole amount to the encrease of prices, in the same manner as if from the mines it had come in the first instance into an unproductive hand without passing through any productive one." The "simple basic ideas" of the Keynesian vision of the General Theory having been stated, Bentham briefly set forth the basic Monetarist doctrine later associated with Milton Friedman: "In respect of the ratio of money to things vendible, of the aggregate of the one to the aggregate of the other, the state of things most desirable is - that it should continue the same at all times: no encrease at any one time, no decrease at any other." __._,_.___ Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (1) Recent Activity: Visit Your Group The gang8 list is devoted to Creditary Economics. Fw: [Arthakranti] Environment Hero [1 Attachment]

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Sudhir Rao <sudhir.sr.rao(a)gmail.com> To: Sent: Tuesday, 14 August 2012, 5:13 Subject: [Arthakranti] Environment Hero [1 Attachment] [Attachment(s) from Sudhir Rao included below] Story of Jadav Payeng look at this man (see attachment) carefully. he is no ordinary man. he lives by the river in a small hut in kokilamukh, assam. this man will be addressing a UN convention in paris in less than two months from now. the convention will be chaired by some of the top notch environmentalists from across the world. a few years back president kalam sought an hour and a half to talk to him after giving him a president's medal. he is known as the forest man of india. he is jadav payeng aka mulai Way back in 1953, French author Jean Giono wrote the epic tale The Man Who Planted Trees. It seemed so real that readers thought the central character, Elzeard Bouffier , was a living individual until the author clarified he had created the person only to make his readers fall in love with trees. Assam's Jadav Payeng has never heard of Giono's book. But he could be Bouffier. He has single-handedly grown a sprawling forest on a 550-hectare sandbar in the middle of the Brahmaputra. It now has many endangered animals, including at least five tigers, one of which bore two cubs recently. The place lies in Jorhat, some 350 km from Guwahati by road, and it wasn't easy for Sunday Times to access him. At one point on the stretch, a smaller road has to be taken for some 30 km to reach the riverbank. There, if one is lucky, boatmen will ferry you across to the north bank. A trek of another 7 km will then land you near Payeng's door. Locals call the place 'Molai Kathoni' (Molai's woods) after Payeng's pet name, Molai. It all started way back in 1979 when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day, after the waters had receded, Payeng , only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead reptiles. That was the turning point of his life. "The snakes died in the heat, without any tree cover. I sat down and wept over their lifeless forms. It was carnage . I alerted the forest department and asked them if they could grow trees there. They said nothing would grow there. Instead, they asked me to try growing bamboo. It was painful, but I did it. There was nobody to help me. Nobody was interested," says Payeng, now 47. Leaving his education and home, he started living on the sandbar. Unlike Robinson Crusoe, Payeng willingly accepted a life of isolation. And no, he had no Man Friday. He watered the plants morning and evening and pruned them. After a few years, the sandbar was transformed into a bamboo thicket. "I then decided to grow proper trees. I collected and planted them. I also transported red ants from my village, and was stung many times. Red ants change the soil's properties . That was an experience," Payeng says, laughing. Soon, there were a variety of flora and fauna which burst in the sandbar, including endangered animals like the one-horned rhino and Royal Bengal tiger. "After 12 years, we've seen vultures. Migratory birds, too, have started flocking here. Deer and cattle have attracted predators," claims Payeng . He says locals recently killed a rhino which was seen in his forest at another forest in Sibsagar district. Payeng talks like a trained conservationist. "Nature has made a food chain; why can't we stick to it? Who would protect these animals if we, as superior beings, start hunting them?" The Assam state forest department learnt about Payeng's forest only in 2008 when a herd of some 100 wild elephants strayed into it after a marauding spree in villages nearby. They also destroyed Payeng's hutment . It was then that assistant conservator of forests Gunin Saikia met Payeng for the first time. "We were surprised to find such a dense forest on the sandbar. Locals, whose homes had been destroyed by the pachyderms, wanted to cut down the forest, but Payeng dared them to kill him instead. He treats the trees and animals like his own children. Seeing this, we, too, decided to pitch in," says Saikia. "We're amazed at Payeng. He has been at it for 30 years. Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero." l __._,_.___Attachment(s) from Sudhir Rao 1 of 1 Photo(s) Jadav Payeng.jpg Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a new topic Messages in this topic (1) Recent Activity: Visit Your Group Switch to: Text-Only, Daily Digest • Unsubscribe • Terms of Use . __,_._,___

Fwd: <nettime> Researching BWPWAP: The Reinvention of Research as Participatory Practice
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 06 Aug '12

perhaps this may interest some of us ? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tatiana Bazzichelli <tbazz(a)transmediale.de> Date: Mon, Aug 6, 2012 at 4:20 PM Subject: <nettime> Researching BWPWAP: The Reinvention of Research as Participatory Practice To: nettime-l(a)kein.org Researching BWPWAP: The Reinvention of Research as Participatory Practice Call for Participation for International Research Conference and PhD Workshop to be held at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany, 22-24 November 2012. Organised by: Digital Aesthetics/Participatory IT Research Centre, Aarhus University reSource transmedial culture berlin/transmediale festival Centre for Digital Cultures, Leuphana University of Lüneburg We hereby invite proposals for participation in a research workshop around the 2013 theme of the transmediale festival, BWPWAP (Back When Pluto Was A Planet). We are addressing researchers with diverse backgrounds interested in opening up some of the paradoxes of contemporary digital art and culture. Although the workshop is primarily aimed at international PhD researchers, it is also open to researchers who are pursuing research without institutional support. The workshop aims at researching concepts and phenomena that, in the light of the festival's thematic framework, have become destabilised by network culture and digital media (see below). Thematically, these may include – but are not restricted to: / techno-cultural displacement and invention / fragility of networks / disruptive potential of artistic practice / paradoxes of digital art and culture / organisation after networks / participatory research practices / research beyond academia / network epistemologies / networks after social networks BWPWAP In referring to the cancellation of Pluto's planetary status in 2006, BWPWAP (Back When Pluto Was a Planet), the 2013 theme of the transmediale festival, interrogates techno-cultural processes of displacement and invention, asking for artistic and speculative responses to new cultural imaginaries. Back When Pluto Was a Planet, life might have seemed more innocent, yet whole cultural imaginaries, like planetary systems, may change overnight, and technical and cultural paradigms along with them. The festival will take this fragility of culture as a point of departure for exploring the disruptive potential of technological development and artistic practice. Can we act like BWPWAP and at same time redefine present and future cultural practices, inventing networks out of place and out of time? This conference and workshop, which precedes transmediale, asks how BWPWAP can be interpreted in the context of research culture that has been significantly destabilised by network culture and digital media. If Pluto didn't exactly fall prey to an epistemological break or a scientific revolution, but rather to a mundane administrative procedure – a redefinition of what constitutes a planet and the invention of the category "dwarf planet" – then what does this say about contemporary research culture? Is research today occupied more with mundane acts of recategorisation, and – after Bologna – with what Lyotard already called performativity? Or does it still engage the kind of marvel and wonder that so many ascribe to Pluto and that BWPWAP captures as a cultural term? If BWPWAP captures a time when transmedial culture was researched outside academia, how does network culture and digital media then contribute to and transform research culture, forcing it out of its closet and, if not into the solar system, then at least beyond the academy? BWPWAP, network culture was already becoming subsumed by social media and more recently mobile media. Networking and other strategies within software and net culture have become enmeshed with everyday life and big business. Research culture was visited by a similar fate: conferences reduced to networking events to foster cultural capital, and scholarly communications reduced to impact factors measured by grant givers. In light of this, what complicity can be constructed, with or without Pluto, between network and research cultures? Can digital culture save research from itself, and vice versa? What kinds of technological and artistic practices are suggested by BWPWAP and might produce rhizomatic effects for research and digital culture? WORKSHOP EVENT AND PROCESS In the context of developing a platform for knowledge exchange, and research across the arts and sciences, transmediale and research groups at Aarhus and Leuphana universities have established a partnership to foster new forms of collaborative research, peer-review, publication and performative knowledge dissemination. The international research conference and PhD workshop takes transmediale's thematic framework as a broad starting point, and is a chance for researchers to share ideas and development processes across and beyond the time/space of academic research paradigms. The challenge is to salvage what there is to be salvaged from network culture and digital media for research, and vice versa. The workshop forms part of a series of events initiated by reSource transmedial culture berlin, which is an initiative of transmediale based on continuous network knowledge development and community involvement around the festival throughout the year. The event itself will be an interdisciplinary conference and workshop where PhD students and other participants can engage with members of the three participating institutions and invited international guests. One aspect of the conference will be a writing workshop wherein new digital writing practices and forms of collaborative writing will be explored. Ahead of the conference, invited participants will be asked to take part in an online discussion and collaboration process as an experiment in the peer production of knowledge. After the conference, participants will be involved in the production of a peer-reviewed research newspaper – itself an experiment in new forms of scholarly publication, and to be presented and distributed at transmediale 2013. The event follows on from similar events organised in 2012 and 2011 at Universität der Künste (Berlin), and Aarhus University, respectively.
