But the new economy tycoons and those on the liberal coasts support a more progressive tax system. http://blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2011/09/16/the-top-5-grabbed-most-of-the-americ… A new chart from the Economic Policy Institute<http://www.epi.org/publication/large-disparity-share-total-wealth-gain/>, using data from NYU Economist Ed Wolff, shows that more than 80% of the nation’s wealth gains between 1983 and 2009 went to the wealthiest top 5%. I have donated to this woman's campaign and I urge you to do the same. This is the kind of public servant we need in the Congress.* Newly-announced senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is proving her progressive street cred on her "talking tour" with powerful and sensible talking points on the usefulness of government in people's lives. She's doing the activists who petitioned for her entrance in the race proud. Would that all Democrats could be this feisty! Here's a transcript, via rumproast: I hear all this, you know, 'Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever.”-No! There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. You built a factory out there-good for you! But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that maurauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea-God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] RespectMyNet: Name and Shame Operators' Attempts to Control the Net

Dear Chris, could you also post this on Ning, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 12:06 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] RespectMyNet: Name and Shame Operators' Attempts to Control the Net To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: http://www.laquadrature.net/en/respectmynet-name-and-shame-operators-attemp… RespectMyNet: Name and Shame Operators' Attempts to Control the Net *** Paris, September 22nd, 2011 — Civil society groups today launched an online platform to help citizens track Internet access restrictions imposed by telecom companies. This platform, RespectMyNet.eu [1], will present EU lawmakers with the evidence they keep denying: there is an urgent need to legislate against Net Neutrality violations, which harm fundamental freedoms as well as innovation and competition. *** Net Neutrality, which refers to the principle of non-discrimination of Internet communications, is at the core of the democratic, social and economic benefits brought about by the Internet. “The online freedom of every European citizen is now under attack by big telecom operators who want to control what you do online. They want to block or slow down websites and even charge extra for using cheap internet telephony services. The Netherlands should soon prohibit these unacceptable practices. But this is not enough: every European has a right to an open internet.” declared Ot van Daalen of the Dutch digital rights organisation Bits of Freedom [2]. “European lawmakers have turned a blind eye on the issue for more than two years. EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes' report on the matter argued [3] that there was no evidence of the need for Net Neutrality regulation. Such a wait-and-see attitude is shocking considering the reality of operators' traffic management practices, and their impact on online freedoms, competition and the whole digital economy.” said Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson for citizen advocacy group La Quadrature du Net. To back up their call for a EU-wide protection of Net Neutrality, civil society groups released today RespectMyNet.eu. "RespectMyNet.eu is an online platform enabling citizens to become the watchmen of the Internet by reporting Net Neutrality violations. Everyone is invited to report undue blocking or throttling of their Internet access, and help name and shame operators who engage in harmful practices." concluded Zimmermann. * References * 1. http://respectmynet.eu/ 2. https://www.bof.nl/home/english-bits-of-freedom/ 3. http://www.laquadrature.net/en/net-neutrality-the-european-commission-gives… ** About la Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that promotes the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. The players were adept at a computer game, Foldit, that allows players to collaborate and compete in predicting the structure of protein molecules. After scientists repeatedly failed to piece together the structure of a protein-cutting enzyme from an AIDS-like virus, they called in the Foldit players and challenged them to produce an accurate model of the enzyme. Remarkably, the gamers generated models good enough for the researchers to refine and determine the enzyme’s structure within a few days. Equally amazing, surfaces on the molecule stood out as likely targets for drugs to deactivate the enzyme. This class of enzymes, called retroviral proteases, has a critical role in how the AIDS virus matures and proliferates. Intensive research is underway to try to find anti-AIDS drugs that can block these enzymes, but efforts were hampered by not knowing exactly what the retroviral protease molecule looked like. “These features provide exciting opportunities for the design of retroviral drugs, including AIDS drugs,” write Khatib and co-authors (including the gamers) of a paper appearing yesterday in the journal *Nature Structural & Molecular Biology*. “Online gamers have solved a longstanding scientific problem, perhaps leading the way to new anti-viral drugs,” said Carter Kimsey, program director in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Biological Infrastructure, which funded the research. Fold-it was created by computer scientists and biochemists at the UW Center for Game Science, and by paper co-author biochemist David Baker of UW, to engage the general public in scientific discovery. The solution of the virus enzyme structure, the scientists said, indicates the power of online computer games to channel human intuition and of three-dimensional pattern-matching skills to solve challenging scientific problems. The online protein folding game captivates thousands of avid players worldwide. Direct manipulation tools, as well as assistance from a computer program called Rosetta, encourage participants to configure graphics into a workable protein model. Teams send in their answers, and UW researchers constantly improve the design of the game and its puzzles by analyzing the players’ problem-solving strategies. Figuring out the shape and misshape of proteins contributes to research on causes of and cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s, immune deficiencies, and a host of other disorders, as well as to environmental work on biofuels. Games like Foldit are evolving. To piece together the retrovirus enzyme structure, Cooper said, Foldit used a new alignment tool for the first time to copy parts of known molecules and test their fit in an incomplete model. “The ingenuity of game players,” the paper concludes, “is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems.” Ref.: Firas Khatib, et al., Crystal structure of a monomeric retroviral protease solved by protein folding game players, *Nature Structural and Molecular Biology*, 2011; [DOI:10.1038/nsmb.2119<http://www.nature.com/nsmb/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nsmb.2119.html> ] Read full article here...<http://www.kurzweilai.net/on-line-gamers-succeed-where-scientists-fail-open…> Powered by RssDemon <http://www.meecel.com> -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
