Dear PeDAGoG colleagues, PFA the meeting notes from our call on 6th June. The work to be taken up in the next few months has been divided into sub working groups, as mentioned in the notes. In case you would like to contribute to any of these sub groups, then you can connect with the group members latest by 18th June. Also adding the link to the Google Doc currently being worked upon by these groups (same as the meeting notes for now): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X4p8-Lf6CDDIxyzs8Jc5xx6mb3fB3bSDYsYPbZm… On Thu, 3 Jun 2021 at 19:09, Ashish Kothari <ashishkothari(a)riseup.net> wrote: > oh no ... The center fosters a young generation of globally oriented environmental specialists. Equipped with international research, management and communication skills, even entry-level professionals will have a significant impact on the increasingly important field of climate adaptation. The Centre facilitates careers in the fields of water security and climate adaptation. A master's degree program on "Water Security and Global Change" and a joint doctoral program are being established in Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai and Dresden (ABCD), in addition to dialogue formats for young scholars. Graduates of Theology will thus have interesting options for further academic qualification, for example with the goal of a doctorate in the field of Climate Ethics and Development. Ethics and directions of transformation
by Ashish Kothari 07 Jun '21

07 Jun '21

Dear colleagues, in the discussion in yesterday's meeting, one decision was to draft what could be our commonly held ethical positions, w.r.t. the world we want, the kind of learning/teaching environment we seek, and how PeDAGoG itself operates. Another point was re. the need to better articulate, for ourselves and others, what we mean by transformation, or alternatives ... since these terms are also co-opted by the dominant system. I am sharing here two documents, emerging from the Vikalp Sangam (Alternatives Confluence) process in India, but hopefully much more widely applicable with appropriate modifictions: 1. 'In search of radical alternatives', a framework of principles and strategies 2. 'Alternatives Transformation Format', a tool for self-assessment or participatory assessment of how we are moving towards justice, sustainability etc ... A small subgroup has been set up to formulate a first draft of ethics for us, that you can all comment on and discuss before finalising. I hope the above documents will be useful to this group, but also to many others on this list. thanks ashish -- Ashish Kothari New, for COVID relief in India! Re: [PeDAGoG] Reactivating PeDAGoG - Online Discussion on 6th June, 2 PM GMT
by Upamanyu Das 06 Jun '21

06 Jun '21

Dear PeDAGoG colleagues, For the upcoming online meeting on 6th June 2 PM GMT, we have crowd-sourced ideas for specific themes that we can work on. This will be done using moderated breakout rooms that can have a sharp focus on getting the group to think of short term deliverables. A few PeDAGoG colleagues have volunteered to help moderate these sessions! :) Please do go through the thematic points, and let us know if there are any additional points you would like to add. Depending on the overall turnout, we can divide/club together certain themes. Here are themes that we can work upon in this meeting: 1. *Pedagogic and knowledge sharing to build and strengthen the repository of materials* This is a broad theme and I can be subdivided into (say) : 1 a) Dynamic and updated *reading list* on key aspects to be created and maintained on a server. 1 b) Curating and maintaining a *database of existing course documents* related to PeDaGoG teaching- in and outside of university teaching (even visually on a world map to see where all are we teaching/researching/etc in varied ways would be exciting!) 1 c) Building a *repository of classroom resources* apart from academic readings such as films/ songs/ poetry/ visuals 2. *Research collaborations* including action research 3. *Co-organization of events* (webinar series, online lectures, conference, etc.) 4. *Advocacy for PeDaGoG*: Exploring the social media platform / writing a news piece about the diverse actors here (drumming some excitement about this group) 5. *COLLECTIVE VALUES AND PRINCIPLES OF THE PEDAGOG NETWORK *(This ideally should be our first focused output in a very short time. We need to set up a statement that new members can refer to) See you all there! Best, Upamanyu On Thu, 27 May 2021 at 10:43, Ashish Kothari <ashishkothari(a)riseup.net> wrote: > V. good idea. A late introduction
by Udi Mandel 04 Jun '21

04 Jun '21

Dear kindred folk I have been following with interest the activities of the PeDAGoG list but have not yet introduced myself. My name is Udi Mandel, currently based in Hawai’i (originally from Brazil, with sometime in the UK and Costa Rica). After spending a number of years teaching in academia in the UK (mainly social anthropology and international development), and fed up with the neo-liberalisation of higher ed, with my wife Kelly Teamey (who is also following on this list) we left academia to explore a number of alternative higher education places around the world through the project enlivenedlearning.com (and made two films in the process: Re-learning Hope: A Story of Unitierra <https://vimeo.com/172681670> and Re-Learning the Land: A Story of Red Crow College <https://vimeo.com/128091605> <https://vimeo.com/128091605>). With other friends encountered in this journey we then co-founded the Ecoversities Alliance ( http://ecoversities.org/) as a community of learning practitioners from around the world committed to re-imagining higher education to cultivate human and ecological flourishing and learning from each other in solidarity . More recently a group of us have started the Enlivened Cooperative (a non-profit, organized as a worker-owned cooperative) offering courses, programs and research with a perspective of bringing different knowledge systems and paradigms together for eco-social flourishing. We envision the Enlivened Cooperative as a platform through which to bring together kindred folks to offer various learning-related possibilities collectively. Here is a link to our website: http://enlivenedcooperative.org An example of the kind of course we want to offer, this summer we have - *Arboreal Learning with Cacao: Fermenting Beans, Community and Planetary Solidarity* - a delicious experiential 12 week online course (that tastes different) learning about cacao, chocolate and eco-social regeneration through the lens of cacao. Through the relationship of cacao to multiple cultures (Mesoamerican, Afro-Caribbean, regenerative agroforestry, craft chocolatiers), and through the perspective of a cacao tree, learners will experience different phases of the chocolate-making process (from bean to bar), experiment with recipes and tastings at home and explore their own place - local ecology and community through a series of lectures, conversations and invited tasks. Here is the link to the course: https://enlivenedcooperative.org/courses/cacao/ I wanted to make this introduction too at this stage as there is a meeting on the 6th (too late for us here in Hawai'i) and we would be interested to see ways of collaborating on collective teaching and research. With aloha Udi
