Water For Rivers
by Ariel Salleh 24 Mar '21

24 Mar '21

From: mark merritt <merrittmark(a)hotmail.com> Subject: Water For Rivers - MEDIA RELEASE March 22, 2021 - Merritt Date: 22 March 2021 at 4:53:57 PM AEDT MEDIA RELEASE March 22, 2021 Start – 15-Day River Convoy Calls For Healthier River-flows & Waterways At 3:pm on April 16, 2021, many boats of all descriptions will launch into the 47-kilometer-long weir-pool at Menindee in Western NSW. This action is to demonstrate deep and growing concerns for the water management practices that have almost destroyed The Darling/Baaka River and The Menindee Lakes. Last year, during the Covid-19 lock-downs, a woman named Tuesday Browell, based in the Victorian River Murray town of Torrumbarry, built a solar-powered boat styled after an Egyptian Falucca. She named it “Wanambe” meaning River Serpent. When asked by local media what she would do next, an impulsive answer became an historic call to action as she replied; “The Darling/Baaka River needs a bit of support so I will do a trip in the boat to highlight its state.” Tuesday Browell and her sailor friend Carrol Carney then went on a reconnaissance trip to see if they could get the Wanambe and Carrol’s boat “Sneaky Snag” all the way from Menindee to Wentworth. But they were shocked at the state of the Darling/Baaka River and its flow. “This situation beggars belief, said Tuesday Browell. This world-famous million-year-old river is in its death rattle. Something must be done now. We can walk across the Darling River at a thousand points and not get our knees wet. The reality is stark, much of the river below Menindee is only 200mm deep and flowing at about one kilometer an hour. The sparse deep holes and worn bends are linked by just a shallow trickle of clay-laden water. We are inviting anyone to join us to float along and speak from the river’s point of view.” Ms Browell went on, “Before we left we imagined we would put in at Menindee, then slowly weave our way to Pooncarie about 295 km, then on to Wentworth to join the Murray.” she said. “We imagined water deep enough to travel on our boats which only have a 250mm draught (about ten inches). We were preparing for a 600km river journey, but were shocked by what we saw.” The two say their trip is now to be a convoy with purpose. All the boats will launch at Menindee on April 16th for five days of travelling up and down the 47 kilometres of navigable water there. Then travel over land, and get back into the Darling/Baaka at the Pooncarie Weir on April 21, 2021 for another five days. Then to Wentworth on April 26 to travel, if possible up 70km of river to Ellerslie Station. The convoy will finish at the Murray/Darling/Baaka confluence in Wentworth on Saturday May 1, 2021. It is anticipated the Wentworth paddle steamer “PS Ruby” will come out to join in the convoy when celebrations reach the Wentworth Weir Pool at Lock-10. Tuesday Browell, Carrol Carney and the many sailors joining them will highlight the longstanding historical First Laws and Rights of Passage on that inland waterway. They urge all boaties and freshwater fishers to join the convoy from Menindee to Wentworth and let their message be loud and clear to the authorities. Fwd: FW: The Pedagogy of Transition: Educating for the Future We Want (GTN Discussions)
by Nina Smolyar 16 Mar '21

16 Mar '21

Perhaps of interest to some... Tellus Institute is a small non-profit think tank, based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, working on sustainability and Great Transition topics, through thought pieces and networking, among others. ---------- Forwarded message --------- Subject: FW: The Pedagogy of Transition: Educating for the Future We Want (GTN Discussions) To: Nina Smolyar <nina.l.smolyar(a)gmail.com> >From Paul Raskin [praskin(a)tellus.org] ---------------------------------------------------------- Dear GTN, The theme of our March discussion is* The Pedagogy of Transition: Educating for the Future We Want*. In this time of perilous change, education for the world we want has become ever more urgent. We need evolved educational philosophies, curricula, and pedagogy that cultivate integrated knowledge and new consciousness for citizens of an uncertain global future. Please consider commenting on one or more of the following subthemes: *Educating for the World We Don’t Want* Are we failing to prepare students to lead curious, well-informed, big-hearted lives? What’s wrong with contemporary curricula and teaching? What political and social factors maintain such deficient educational practices? *Class Struggles* Share your experience devising courses, modules, and programs for 21st century citizenship. What has worked, what hasn’t, and why? What proposals do you have in the works? *Educating for a Great Transition* What educational reforms should be prioritized in near-term strategies? What long-term vision of curricula and the learning experience should we be striving for? How can we best further a pedagogy of transition at learning levels from pre-school through graduate school? Stephen Sterling’s opening reflection <https://greattransition.org/gti-forum/education-sustainability-sterling> lays out the issues in challenging the educational status quo and moving in a new direction. In particular, I’d like to direct your attention to Class Struggles (pun intended). GTN includes many educators, and this forum invites you to share your practical, nitty-gritty experiences with innovative courses and curricula. The discussion will go through *Wednesday, March 31*. As always, we encourage both pithy and extended comments up to 1,200 words. Over to you, Paul Paul Raskin GTI Director ---------------------------------------------------------- To submit a comment for this GTN discussion, click reply or send it to jcohn(a)tellus.org. *Expect a delay between the submission and posting.* You can review the discussion here <https://greattransition.org/241-the-pedagogy-of-transition-educating-for-th…>, where you can also submit your comment by replying to any previously posted comment. ------------------------------

CfP Re-worlding: Pluriversal politics in the Anthropocene (2nd call)
by Carlos Tornel 15 Mar '21

15 Mar '21

Dear colleagues, With apologies for cross-posting. This is the second call for papers for this year's Nordia Geographical Publications theme issue: *Re-worlding: Pluriversal politics in the Anthropocene*. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions and proposals that you might have. We would also appreciate it if you could forward it to anyone who might be interested to contribute. Deadline to send the abstracts is March 31st. *The full call with instructions for submissions can be accessed here: https://nordia.journal.fi/announcement/view/337 <https://nordia.journal.fi/announcement/view/337>* Best wishes, C. *Call for Papers * *Nordia Geographical Publications Theme Issue 2021* *Re-worlding: Pluriversal politics in the Anthropocene* Aapo Lunden (Oulu) & Carlos Tornel (Durham) (eds.) The Geographical Society of Northern Finland and the Geography Research Unit at the University of Oulu are inviting contributors to the Nordia Geographical Publications Theme Issue coming out in late 2021 with the topic Pluriversal Politics in the Anthropocene. The Nordia Geographical Publications is a peer-reviewed, open access academic journal focusing on contemporary conversations and openings in Geography. In describing the world experiencing accelerating change and multifaceted overheating, the anthropologist Thomas Hylland Eriksen (2016) portrays contemporary times through powerful endings like the end of cheap nature, the end of traditional political thought and the end of overarching generalizations. The exhaustion of neoliberalism and the double bind that emerges from a relentless pursuit of economic growth and sustainability is leading to increasingly tangible forms of social and environmental unsustainability. Therefore, there is an urgency not only to move away from growth as we know it and reclaiming the commons, but for broader civilizational changes and transitions (Escobar, 2015; Kallis,et al., 2020). Moving beyond modernity’s ever-expanding faith in forms of technological and market-based fixes, “solutionisms” (Morozov 2013) and the trust in hacking our way out of trouble has become an imperative. Hence, new political strategies are needed to foregroundontological politics and the multiplicities of differences or ‘otherness’ instead of a binary or apotheotic thinking (Rose 2013). In order to conceptualise space for these necessary transitions, there is a need “to build on the notion of multiple realities and possibilities implicit in the agenda of many social movements'' (Escobar, 2020). Turning to such realities, or pluriversal politics, means engaging with multiple dialogic methods to ‘enhance appreciation of multiple ways of knowing and being in the world (...) that decenters models of science and development that have been portrayed as universally true and good (Paulson, 2018: 85). Moreover, we aim to depart from recent debates seeking to ”name the system” in academic discussion mainly between framing our current epoch as the Anthropocene (Moore 2015; Boneuil and Fressoz, 2016). While we see these discussions as a fruitful starting point, we instead turn our interest to the multiple scales of change and follow Hylland Eriksen’s approach in scaling down to the middle-ground. Here we are interested in conceptualizations that provide stronger multi-scalar linkages between the macro and micro, the global and the local (Hylland Eriksen, 2018) to analyse environmental and social changes in times of increasing shared and particular planetary vulnerabilities (Mbembe, 2020). We invite authors to contribute in populating themiddle-ground and discuss thepluriversal and ontological politics of the Anthropocene. We welcome the conceptual and theoretical, as well as empirical examples that describe living and thinking in times of environmental and social change, linking macro-micro level changes to specific contexts and geographies. The topics of the contribution include, but are not limited to: - Multiple scales or multi-scalar clashes in the Anthropocene (Hylland Eriksen, 2016); - Strategies, case studies and the politics of reclaiming the commons, resisting terricide (Escobar, 2020) and ecocide in the content of new and old forms of extractivisms (Dunlap, 2020); - Conceptualising the double bind of economic growth and sustainability from different scales, places and mobitilities (e.g., in the fields of conservation, tourism, or natural resource governance, (see: Buscher & Fletcher, 2020); - Assessments of the COVID-19 pandemic and planetary degradation as a crisis of life (syndemic and other combinatory concepts); - Empirical examples and case studies of pluriversal politics in the global North or the global South, highlighting synergies and strategies for transitions and ontological politics (Escobar, 2015); - Strategies and experiences that explore and engage with the ‘decolonization of the imaginary’(Latouche, 2009); - Empirical and/or theoretical contributions exploring the contributions to ontological politics to broader conceptualizations of political economy or political ecology; - Problematizations of “plastic words”, development schemes and new versions of environmental “high modernity” (Scott, 1998; Sachs, 2018) through anti-political perspectives; - Transitions that aim to articulate changes from ‘predatory’ to ‘sensible’ or ‘essential’ forms of extractivism (Brand, 2020); - The multiple ways that the environmental movements (new and old) can engage with pluriversal politics in the Anthropocene. The contributions can take the form of: - Peer reviewed research articles (ca. 6000–9000 words), academic essays or review articles (ca. 3000–6000 words). - Editorially reviewed interventions and discussions (ca. 2000–4000 words).

Hackers as Vital Disruptors for Democracy
by Nadarajah Manickam 13 Mar '21

13 Mar '21

*BOOK LAUNCH & LECTURE ON "CODING DEMOCRACY: HOW HACKERS ARE DISRUPTING POWER, SURVEILLANCE, AND AUTHORITARIANISM"* MAUREEN WEBB WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 5:30PM – 7:00PM PST, VIA ZOOM WEBINAR (REGISTRATION REQUIRED) Organized by SFU's Institute for the Humanities; Co-sponsored by SFU's Vancity Office for Community Engagement, Lawyers' Rights Watch Canada, & B.C. Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) https://www.facebook.com/events/212470693893864 http://www.sfu.ca/humanities-institute/public-events/public-events/2021/cod… Register HERE <https://sfu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_gbX_IVcjTNio7nVAK19v8A> DEFENDING DEMOCRACY: ONE OF 24 BOOKS TO HELP UNDERSTAND THE WORLD IN 2021 (THE MIT PRESS) Hackers as vital disruptors, inspiring a new wave of activism in which ordinary citizens take back democracy. Hackers have a bad reputation, as shady deployers of bots and destroyers of infrastructure. In Coding Democracy, Maureen Webb offers another view. Hackers, she argues, can be vital disruptors. Hacking is becoming a practice, an ethos, and a metaphor for a new wave of activism in which ordinary citizens are inventing new forms of distributed, decentralized democracy for a digital era. Confronted with concentrations of power, mass surveillance, and authoritarianism enabled by new technology, the hacking movement is trying to “build out” democracy into cyberspace. Webb travels to Berlin, where she visits the Chaos Communication Camp, a flagship event in the hacker world; to Silicon Valley, where she reports on the Apple-FBI case, the significance of Russian troll farms, and the hacking of tractor software by desperate farmers; to Barcelona, to meet the hacker group XNet, which has helped bring nearly 100 prominent Spanish bankers and politicians to justice for their role in the 2008 financial crisis; and to Harvard and MIT, to investigate the institutionalization of hacking. Webb describes an amazing array of hacker experiments that could dramatically change the current political economy. These ambitious hacks aim to displace such tech monoliths as Facebook and Amazon; enable worker cooperatives to kill platforms like Uber; give people control over their data; automate trust; and provide citizens a real say in governance, along with capacity to reach consensus. Coding Democracy is not just another optimistic declaration of technological utopianism; instead, it provides the tools for an urgently needed upgrade of democracy in the digital era. BOOK REVIEW I’ll admit it: Hacker triumphalism makes me nauseous. Ever since Anonymous strapped on Guy Fawkes masks and started digitally sticking it to Scientologists and the Westboro Baptist Church, certain parts of the internet have become convinced that God is a hacker, here to wash the hard drives of the impure with cleansing viruses. Especially hackers. Coding Democracy: How Hackers Are Disrupting Power, Surveillance, and Authoritarianism, by lawyer and human rights activist Maureen Webb, managed to reach through my comfortable layers of snark-justified disinterest. Webb doesn’t just praise cypherpunks for being the edgy little hornets’ nest kickers they are. She’s building a powerful case for the fact that technology as we know it—omnipresent, flawed, world-improving—has become so entrenched and static that it really does need the hackers worrying the edges of its firewalls. In Webb’s telling, hackers aren’t heroes destined to bring the world to a grand new order of their own transgressive imaginings. They’re agents of positive chaos. —Emma Grey Ellis, WIRED's 13 Must-Read Books for Spring SPEAKER Maureen Webb is a labour, human rights and constitutional lawyer. Her book, Coding Democracy: How Hackers Are Disrupting Power, Surveillance and Authoritarianism, published in 2020 by The MIT Press, made Wired magazine’s “Thirteen Must Read Books for Spring 2020” list. Also the author of Illusions of Security: Global Surveillance and Democracy in the Post 9-11 World (San Francisco: City Lights, 2007), Maureen’s work has been praised by voices as diverse as Craig Newmark, Randi Weingarten, Cory Doctorow, Andrew Feenberg, Jeremy Waldron, and Mark Danner. She’s been invited to speak in many venues, including Chatham House, Virtual Futures, the Oxford Literary Festival, the London Front Line club, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the World Affairs Council of California, and most recently the Toronto International Festival of Authors. Part of the activist community in BC, she’s served on the boards of Lawyers Rights Watch Canada and the BC Civil Liberties Association, and from time to time, taught public interest law at UBC law school. In addition to her writing about technology and democracy, she’s written many pieces on the human rights dimensions of national security. An article she published on the Canadian Anti-terrorism Act was cited extensively in the trial judgment in R. v.
