Fwd: FW: The Earth Day Roundtable on “Food Security and Food Sovereignty"
by Prakash Kashwan 20 Apr '21

20 Apr '21

Dear GTA Friends: This round table should be of interest to you, your colleagues, and the students. One special feature here is an active dialogue between the U.S.-centered food justice movement and the international discussions focused on food sovereignty etc. We promise a thought provoking panel discussion here. Best wishes, Prakash **Registration Link at the bottom** *April 22, 2021--- 2PM EST * *The Earth Day Roundtable on “Food Security and Food Sovereignty" * * Roundtable co-sponsored by the Research Program on Economic & Social Rights and the Human Rights Institute. This is a UConn Reads Event.* *Panelists* Annette Desmarais <https://umanitoba.ca/faculties/arts/departments/sociology/facstaff/3497.html>, Canada Research Chair in Human Rights, Social Justice and Food Sovereignty at University of Manitoba Michael Fakhri <https://law.uoregon.edu/people/directory/mfakhri>, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Maywa Montenegro <https://envs.ucsc.edu/faculty/index.php?uid=mamonten>, Assistant Professor, Environmental Studies Department, University of California, Santa Cruz. *Moderator* Prakash Kashwan <https://humanrights.uconn.edu/person/prakash-kashwan/>, Associate Professor, Political Science & Co-Director, Research Program on Economic & Social Rights at the University of Connecticut Transformative changes in the global and national food systems are central to the pursuits of social justice for racial minorities and Indigenous peoples, the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, specifically Goal 2 of Zero Hunger), and meaningful climate action. Despite broad-based consensus on each of these goals, significant debates continue about the specific pathways to ensure rapid progress on these goals. While the United Nations and other international agencies continue to emphasize the goals of food security, food justice advocates insist on making food sovereignty the central plank for global and national policies and programs. Furthermore, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP), adopted in December 2018, constitutes an important intervention for ensuring the accountability of states and agribusiness actors. This roundtable brings together noted food activists and academics to brainstorm the future of the right to food and a hunger free world within the context of the ongoing environmental and climate crisis. The panelists will explore the role that grassroots agroecology movements could play in influencing the nature and the outcomes of anticipated changes in the existing food systems. Fwd: Solidarity in Action - Forum Event 3, 15th April 2021 [RSVP]
by Ashish Kothari 08 Apr '21

Friends, this may be of interest, ashish -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Solidarity in Action - Forum Event 3, 15th April 2021 [RSVP] Date: Thu, 8 Apr 2021 09:35:41 +0100 From: Solidarity in Action Network <solidarityinactionnetwork(a)gmail.com> To: Solidarity in Action Network <solidarityinactionnetwork(a)gmail.com> Dear All, You are warmly invited to the 3rd online Forum of the international *Solidarity in Action Network* on Thursday 15th April 2021, 2-5pm GMT (UK time). The theme is *'The Pedagogy of Solidarity in Two Provocations'.* * * * /*The Coloniality of Solidarity* - Rubén A. Gaztambide-Fernández/ Solidarity figures prominently in educational projects committed to social change. Yet what precisely solidarity entails, for whom, doing what, and under what conditions is usually only vaguely defined and often in contradictory terms, even when solidarity is a centrepiece of the work at hand. In this brief talk, Gaztambide-Fernández will unpack what the multifarious uses of the concept of solidarity reveal about the colonial and racist underpinnings of the concept and how these are revealed in contemporary uses. He will argue that without paying attention to its colonial and racist underpinnings, any project that invokes the concept of solidarity risks reissuing these logics. /Rubén A. Gaztambide-Fernández is Professor of Curriculum & Pedagogy and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Curriculum Inquiry at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. His research and scholarship are concerned with questions of symbolic boundaries and the dynamics of cultural production and processes of identification in educational contexts. His theoretical work focuses on the relationship between cultural production and solidarity./ // * /*How institutions (un)learn?: some ideas around issues of solidarity, community and pedagogy* - Javier Rodrigo/ This presentation will explain how to approach solidarity issues through pedagogical projects in Barcelona, Spain, by examining two particular, contrasting experiences. One, is in collaboration with a group of youth migrants, in the context of a memory museum. The other is a community-run theatre, based on participatory budgeting and direct democracy with special emphasis on community and intercultural criteria for programme development. Both of these examples are presented in order to raise the issue of the need for an institutional pedagogy and to raise a core question of cultural institutions: How do institutions (Un)learn? /Javier Rodrigo is coordinator of Transductores <https://transductores.info/>, a platform about cultural politics, critical mediation, direct cultural democracy and experiments on governance and commons. See more of his writing here <https://independent.academia.edu/JavierRodrigo>./ *There will be an opportunity to question both speakers, before breaking into groups to tackle a series of particular challenges provided by the speakers. * *Some reading in preparation for the Forum* In advance of the 15th April, we request that, ideally, most people will have read at least one of the articles provided by Rubén A. Gaztambide-Fernández below. The first two are short and written for a popular audience, one in English and one in Spanish, and similar in content. The second one is a bit longer and more academic. Here are the links: * Short piece about solidarity <https://theconversation.com/what-is-solidarity-during-coronavirus-and-alway…> in English * Similar piece as above, but in Spanish <https://www.80grados.net/el-llamado-a-la-solidaridad/> for those who can read it and are interested * Longer and more academic piece, Decolonization and the Pedagogies of Solidarity <https://jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/des/article/view/18633> *RSVP* We very much hope that as many participants as possible from the Solidarity in Action Network will be able to attend this event on *Thursday 15th April*. Please can you RSVP by *Tuesday 13th* to solidarityinactionnetwork(a)gmail.com <mailto:[email protected]> (or on the website) and you will then be sent a* calendar invitation*. Looking forward to seeing you and our many new members there. In solidarity, Bernadette -- */Solidarity in Action Network/* e: SolidarityInActionNetwork(a)gmail.com <mailto:[email protected]>

Information about a virtual learning journey around the world
by Andrea González Andino 05 Apr '21

05 Apr '21

This invitation comes from Ecoversities fabric, we are experimenting with learning journeys as a pedagogy in the online world. You can find more info here https://www.yatra.global/ And sign up here: http://bit.ly/GlobalYatra Many hugs from the Ecuadorian Andes :) [image: Neat Icons Facebook Ad.png] I'm excited to share this upcoming event April 19th to May 12th, this is an experiment to try to bring the spirit of the Yatra - Learning journey to a virtual journey a way to meet and travel together visiting inspiring projects and people around the world who can give us hospitality and share their stories, practices and learnings that nurture the imagination and the horizon of what is possible to maintain hope in difficult times and tune-in with other possible worlds with love, affection and care. This trip will last a full moon and will be divided into 8 sessions of 2 hours each. In them, we want to create a space to share and learn -literally and metaphorically- about the power of seeds to regenerate life; to understand ourselves within the perspective of a deep and cosmic time imbued with mystery; for the defense and the rebel fondness for the land and the territory, composting waste and creating fertile soil for memory, play and beauty; we will make a sacred fire where we will meet to share letters of love, resistance and making kin with life; we will listen to practices to get out of the logic of monocultures of the mind, the heart and the earth; and and we will listen to experiences about the affections, movements and care of the body-territory. What if we could see a part of the world that can open a world of possibilities in our minds? What if we can be guided by the spirit of learning while we enjoy conversations and inspiration from many inspired educators from all over the world? What if we get some inspiration from all of these conversations? Here is a list of our speakers: - Elena Pardo – CEPROSI – Cusco, Peru. - Luigi Coppola – Casa delle Agriculture – Lecce, Italy. - Lama Khatieb - Jordan - Zikra for Popular Learning - Hermes de Sousa – Unidiversidade das Kebradas, Sao Miguel Paulista, Sao Paulo, Brazil. - Petra Carman. Alternative Leadership Training. Re: [PeDAGoG] PeDAGoG reactivation - 2nd attempt!
by Ashish Kothari 05 Apr '21

05 Apr '21

Dear PeDAGoG colleagues, Hope everyone is going strong! After a long break, is it time to try to reactivate PeDAGoG? We've had some wonderful posts and discussions in the past (especially our online session last July), and there were interesting activities being proposed. But since then, the list has not been particularly active (though some of you have posted v. interesting material), and this makes us wonder about the limitations we face ... and again, a question I'd asked in mid-2020, whether this network is playing a useful role? At that time, many of you responded with an enthusiastic 'yes', and Julia pegged our first (and so far only) online discussion. Several (mostly) silent months later, we need to ask this qs again ... maybe with these two qs: 1. Firstly, it would be good to know the things people have been engaging with over the past few months, relevant to PeDAGoG. 2. Second, what are some of the activities that we would like to see happen within the PeDAGoG group? There were a lot of interesting proposals to collaborate (on articles, summer schools, learning materials), Collaborative teaching, bridging community-based educational spaces and Universities, hosting online events etc (see below). It would be really interesting to try and actualise some of these activities, possibly in smaller working groups. Maybe we could start a monthly (or every 2 months) online session of sharing interesting methods/courses/approaches? What do you think? A sad update: We have (most probably) lost the drive containing the collection of our courses/methods/pedagogies to a fire in one of our server rooms. We're still trying to work out whether we can retrieve it. If not, we will request those of you who had posted on it, to repost ... we'll send around another link for this. However, the PeDAGoG reading list survives! in case people would like to revisit and update it: https://pad.riseup.net/p/pedagog-readinglist-keep <https://pad.riseup.net/p/pedagog-readinglist-keep> Also, I want to introduce Upamanyu (copied here), who has recently joined us at Kalpavriksh, and will be facilitating activities on the group moving forward (many thanks to Brandon who was doing it earlier) ... if we do collectively feel we want to keep PeDAGoG alive! *Pl. reply to full list if you have something you'd like to share with all ... if there is a message only for me/Upamanyu, pl. write back directly to us only. * thanks, and here is hoping this 2nd revival will be more long-lasting and meaningful :) ashish *Follow-up points listed at online discussion held in July 2020*, in case people would like to revisit what we had come up with: 1. STRUCTURE AND ORGANISING * Organising the communication and sharing in the PEDAGOG space so that material is accessible and not overwhelming the list * social-media presence? * Series of events where we share the approaches we are taking - webinar series from PEDAGOG? * Think about what gaps (geographical, thematic) exist and could be filled (e.g., currently lack of members from Africa)? * Creating a map of our expertise - create a visual tool with themes that concern this group - overlapping circles? * Can some of us find institutional backing, funds? B. PEDAGOGIC AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING ACTIVITIES: Potential to develop sub-groups on the following as a start: * Feminism and political ecology * Teaching exchange through zoom co-teaching * Collaborative journal article writing * Collaboration on Masters education and exchange and summer schools * Youth activist-research outside of mainstream academic structures 3. COLLECTIVE VALUES AND PRINCIPLES OF THE PEDAGOG NETWORK * Ethics and values of PeDAGoG We need a statement on these for the kinds of transformations we want in society, the kind of academics/learning/teaching we feel is 'right', and the ethics for our own internal functioning of PeDAGoG as a network * Suggestion: Small group of volunteers to start a draft Three levels that might be important: 1. Ethics of the transformations we want in society - direction of the transformaiton 2. Ethics of our own teaching and learning spaces 3. Ethics of the PEDAGOG network itself - open, inclusive, non-hierarchical NOW FREE DOWNLOAD!
