Dear Comrades, The Program on Alternative Development of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) shares its comprehensive account on grassroots experiences during the pandemic entitled "A Report on Southeast Asian Community Responses in COVID-19 Times." This year, marginalized and grassroots communities across Southeast Asia faced the unique, uneven, and long-lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in their localities. Despite all, they persisted, trusting in practices, frameworks, and movements as alternatives to an anti-people system. The report documents these responses from the ground. It bears witness to the power of the people to define development in their own terms and actualize possibilities for social solidarity and collective action. May their examples be lessons for all communities fighting the pandemic through alternatives. Read and download the report for free: https://bit.ly/cidsaltdevrlssea <https://bit.ly/cidsaltdevrlssea?fbclid=IwAR3eBgNU2WHmRLnKPL9S8gFBbbo_sr2NYa…> Salute to the communities and organizations for braving the crisis! Thank you very much. Happy New Year! RLS report.jpg <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iD1xS7bkIn7d_bhMFSlAXkb4iNtgoNm_/view?usp=…> Sincerely, Hans Tabiola Program Officer

Fwd: Greetings from Firefly Frequencies
by Alessandra Pomarico 31 Dec '20

31 Dec '20

https://fireflyfrequencies.org Dear all, We send our warmest wishes to you for the New Year. To celebrate our connection, and the passage into a new cycle, we'd like to offer something maybe conducive of time and space shared together through sounds... > Along with a growing number of friends, allies and fellow-travellers we have been putting together a radio platform, Firefly Frequencies, with the idea of opening a space for sonic gathering during these difficult times (and beyond). We hope it will become a shared tool for collectives, struggles, study groups, multiplicities and singularities to beam out signals of affective, poetic and political experimentation and solidarity. We would like to think of Firefly Frequencies as a fugitive dwelling place for healing and holding together in vibrations and silences, in the mystery of the invisible and the magic of sonic gifts, in radical investigations and outlandish soundscapes. We invite you to participate in the construction of this new radio, and help us connect it to other spaces and worlds. And we send a big thank you to all who have already contributed and to The Ecoversities Alliance who supported us imagining the radio as a space of learning! Look forward to hearing from you, Silvia, Graeme, Alessandra, Nikolay ► CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS If you have any podcasts you would like to share or an idea for a show you would like to propose, please write to: *fireflyfrequencies(a)gmail.com <fireflyfrequencies(a)gmail.com>* ► YOU CAN FIND US AT https://fireflyfrequencies.org * ► STAY TUNED * (sound marathon coming up in February!)

Compassion Studies
by Nadarajah Manickam 28 Dec '20

28 Dec '20

Dear All: Greetings. I had set up a *compassion studies* website sometime ago. It covers my work over 2 years, working towards building a centre that would over time create a community of young organic and public intellectuals. However, with a number of institutional changes in the university where I developed all these, including the departure of the VC who recruited me and gave me time to develop the content and methods, I can't take the effort forward. So I set up this site for people who may be interested. There are aspects you can take and use IF they are relevant. Explore and take what you want <https://amanibana.wixsite.com/compassionstudies> if anything is useful. Of course, some parts are still work in progress. Thank you and take care. A new article on Radical Ecological Democracy website- "More Powerful Together - Alternatives As Resistance"
by Pallav Das 28 Dec '20

28 Dec '20

Friends, A new article, “More Powerful Together – Alternatives as Resistance” is now online on Radical Ecological Democracy. In this final part of her series, “More Powerful Together", Jen Goby describes how movements in Canada are challenging the stale idea of making our existing systems work better. Instead, they are offering new societal alternatives by forging resistance to colonialism and resurgence of Indigenous economies, governance structures and ways of life. https://www.radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/more-powerful-together-alternati… Please take a look and share your response. New Open Access E-Book on Agroecology Transformations from AgroecologyNow at the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience
by Michel Pimbert 11 Dec '20

Agroecology Now! Transformations Towards More Just and Sustainable Food Systems By: Colin R. Anderson, Janneke Bruil, Michael Jahi Chappell, Csilla Kiss and Michel Pimbert This new open access book<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fagroecolog…> develops a framework for advancing agroecology transformations focusing on power, politics and governance. It explores the potential of agroecology as a sustainable and socially just alternative to today’s dominant food regime. The authors analyse the conditions that enable and disable agroecology’s potential and present six ‘domains of transformation’ where it comes into conflict with the dominant food system. They argue that food sovereignty, community-self organization and a shift to bottom-up governance are critical for the transformation to a socially just and ecologically viable food system. The last part of the book articulates a new way of thinking about the ‘effects of governance interventions’ as various actors intentionally or inadvertently influence transitions to sustainability in territories with a focus on shifting toward a transformative agroecology. 1. Those that undermine agroecology by (i) suppressing and (ii) co-opting; 2. those that maintain the status quo by (iii) containing and (iv) shielding and 3. those that enable transformative agroecology by (v) supporting and nurturing and (vi) releasing and anchoring. The analysis draws from political ecology and the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions, ultimately making the case for food sovereignty, community-self organization and a shift to bottom-up governance as the basis for transformation towards a socially just and ecologically regenerative food system. The book builds on our wider work at AgroecologyNow! Many open access publications on this topic are available here<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agroe…>. This ‘backgrounder<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agroe…>‘ presents a concise illustration one part of the overall framework in the book, explaining the notion of Domains of Agroecology Transformations. Fwd: [Ecoversities Virtual Planetary Gathering] Schedule & details
by Alessandra Pomarico 03 Dec '20

03 Dec '20

dearest friends it's with great pleasure that we forward you the invitation to our Ecoversties Planetarian Gathering, a very busy long weekend to reconnect and reflect about our autonomous learning spaces! The various offerings in the parallel sessions are truly amazing. In a few places you will find traces of our work in and with this large collective, as in the presentation of (still working in progress) Firefly Radio, Meduse (Mediterranean Ecofeminist Decolonial Union for self Education), and in the Film and Podcasts Publication Festival. We point this out to you just because it may be hard to orient yourself in such a generously crowded schedule and in these appointments we are sure you will reconnect also with common friends. The *OASIS* in the central part of the schedule are the time where we all regroup either in *ceremony* (Friday, day 1, to reconnect among us and all relations), in *assembly* (Saturday, day 2 to heal , share and discuss) and in a *dreaming quest* (Sunday day 3, to envision together how to move forward in the alliance) Obviously we encourage you to follow as much as possible, good luck with the joy of missing out! looking forward to see some of you, and forgive crossposting alessandra [image: Header virtual gathering.png] Dear friends, This is an invitation for you to gather together with other higher education rebels, dreamers and visionaries from around the world for our Fifth Planetarian Gathering of the Ecoversities Alliance to Re-imagining Higher Education and Learning- happening online on December 4th, 5th and 6th 2020. We have designed this year’s Global Gathering as a digital learning journey to stay connected, support each other in a difficult time, and keep working together. During these 3 days you can participate in the multiple parallel ‘open space’ sessions hosted by Ecoversities Alliance’s members offering a variety of proposals and approaches, in different languages and across time zones.. Each day we will also reunite at the ‘oasis session’ – a space for grounding together as a full circle, a space-time for ceremonies, an assembly to reflect together on how to move forward and share updates, and a final envisioning session, to dream our own dreams. As we have experienced in these years, there is an emerging constellation of eco-versities — people and communities reclaiming their local knowledge systems and learning practices to restore and re-envision processes that are meaningful and relevant to the call of our times. Our primary focus in the Alliance and in this virtual gathering is to bring together people who are deeply involved with ‘alternatives’ to higher education — working within, against, and beyond the modern university — as well as in locally-rooted learning spaces that are regenerating community, cultivating new stories and possibilities, and diverse ecological, social, economic, and cultural ecosystems. We truly hope you will join and be part of us, The Ecoversity Alliance Helpful links for the gathering: - Details about the schedule: - This spreadsheet contains detailed information about the schedule of the sessions in different timezones, and ZOOM links 👉 *https://bit.ly/ <https://bit.ly/36ycLeS>Ecoversities * - The schedule is also uploaded on our website 👉 *https://ecoversities.org/news-events/ <https://ecoversities.org/news-events/> * - Register to be in the participants list and be informed 👉 https://bit.ly/3kXUXNZ

Open Discussion and Updates (December 2020)
by Brandon Liu 03 Dec '20

03 Dec '20

Dear all, Apologies for the absence of the monthly discussion thread in the last few months! I got quite caught up in work for the US elections. Welcome to the many new members who have joined in the last couple months. If you haven't already done so, please feel free to introduce yourself to the wider group! What is your background, your work, and what brings you to PeDAGoG? This network functions best when its members connect with each other, and that means asking questions, initiating discussions, and sharing ideas. At the beginning of each month, I send out an email for "open discussion and updates" to invite everyone to share something with the group. You can reply directly here or start a new thread. Anything and everything relating to post-development and pedagogy is most welcome: learning experiences, teaching materials, tools, perspectives, etc. - What's something interesting you learned this month? - What's an exciting professional update you'd like to share with this group? - What's something that's been on your mind this month that's germane to PeDAGoG? - What's something you'd like to get feedback on from the PeDAGoG community? As always, our humble shared doc is available for everyone to use to (1) learn about others in the PeDAGoG network and (2) to share information and materials with others. You can find it here: https://pad.globaltapestryofalternatives.org/pedagog Best, Brandon
