Please find the details of the book from my PhD supervisor. It is a fantastic topic and would interest many of you. This has been one of his dream projects and a magnificent contribution by Prof Surya P. Subedi to the field of Human Rights *_Professor Surya Subedi’s contribution to human rights and to decolonising _**_the curriculum_* There has been a great deal of debate in the recent past about decolonising the curriculum in universities around the globe and a call for the use of more inclusive and diverse literature for teaching. The values of Western civilisations and their contribution to the development of human rights, the rule of law and democracy have been asserted in a wide range of literature. In contrast, few studies have been conducted on the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of human rights in the wider sense of the term. Western scholars are not usually familiar with the vast body of scholarship in Eastern civilisations; nor do many of them go far back in history to understand and appreciate the contribution of Eastern civilisations. This intellectual gap renders the work of such scholars limited in scope. It is in this context that this new book examines the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the United Nations Human Rights agenda. Professor Surya P. Subedi QC, OBE, DCL of the School of Law at the University of Leeds has demonstrated in his recent publication entitled “Human Rights in Eastern Civilisations” published by a major British publishing house, Edward Elgar, how cross-fertilisation of values between the Eastern and Western civilisations has taken place and how the notion of the universality of human rights has been enriched by the values of different civilisations. In his book, Professor Subedi has analysed the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the UN human rights agenda. The book focuses on the norms underpinning Eastern philosophies to assess the extent to which the ancient Eastern civilisations already had human rights values embedded in them. Various chapters in the book explore the expression of values in the scriptures and practices of the Eastern philosophies, assessing their influence on the contemporary understanding of human rights. Rejecting the argument based on the so-called “Asian Values” that is often used to undermine the universality of human rights, the book argues that secularism, personal liberty, tolerance, and universalism are at the heart of the main scriptures of Eastern civilisations. When discussing human rights, this study is not only referring to human rights in the modern sense of the term – that is, the human rights developed mainly after the establishment of the United Nations and within the framework of Western political thought. Rather, this study is considering human rights in a wider sense and in a much earlier historical context. Friends, this may be of interest. For details/to contribute/comment, pl. click on 'contact us' below or write to Swati, cc'd here ... DO NOT WRITE BACK ON LISTS please. ashish *Vikalp Sangam Map* The *Vikalp Sangam **Map* <https://vikalpsangam.org/map/>documents and catalogues stories of alternative initiatives across India. It provides readers, researchers, students and practitioners with a user-friendly tool to navigate through stories, case studies, films and perspectives on numerous ongoing alternative initiatives in India. These initiatives range across food, environment, health, politics, culture, education, governance and many more subjects. As the scale of many of these initiatives is small, many of them go unnoticed in the eyes of concerned citizens and researchers. The Map collects stories of alternatives in order to increase visibility with the aim of interlinking them and initiating conversations of sharing experiences and learning. It therefore, is a virtual medium to get information, connect with other groups working on similar issues and build confluences. Its major activity is the convening of regional and thematic Confluences across India, and documentation and dissemination of alternative initiatives. *What is an Alternative?* Alternatives can be practical activities, policies, processes, technologies, and concepts/frameworks, that lead us to equity, justice, and sustainability. They can be practiced or proposed/propagated by communities, government, civil society organizations, individuals, and social enterprises, amongst others. They can simply be continuations from the past, re-asserted in or modified for current times, or new ones; it is important to note that the term does not imply these are always ‘marginal’ or new, but that they are in contrast to the mainstream or dominant system. Not all will be 'radical' in all respects, and many may be in transition or be in the nature of reforms but helping to reduce injustic, inequality, unsustainability. C. -- Centre for Culture and Ecology – Talk Series on Capitalism, Nature and Climate. Dr. Jason W. Moore and Dr. Jaume Franquesa - *Cheap energy in the Capitalocene: Accumulation, waste, and the struggles for reparation ecologies.* Thursday, 22nd July 2021 (16:00 - 18:00) (BST), via Zoom. *Talk Abstract: * Using the term Capitalocene means taking capitalism seriously, not just as an economic system, but as a way of organizing the relations between humans and the rest of nature. The Capitalocene argues that the modern world is a result of a set of strategies that seek to "cheapen" and mobilize all kinds of work with as little compensation as possible, enabling the expansion of capitalism's frontiers, and extending its control over a wider set of relations of life. Considering energy as a "cheap thing", reveals how energy “does work” for capitalism: by amplifying (or substituting) work and care to advance *productivity *in a system with what appears to be a limitless demand for growth. The ongoing climate crisis reveals that we are living with the consequences of a civilization built on cheap energy. The Capitalocene challenges the idea that renewable energy necessarily involves a stark rupture with the former modes of energy production. Instead, it foregrounds how renewable energy technologies replicate cheapening strategies, creating new sacrifice zones, and leaving behind environmental risks and social conflicts. It is through the dialectical relationship between waste and value that the energy transitions operate: Renewable energy investment is presented as a redeeming strategy for the unproductiveness or the wastefulness of certain places, a process that simultaneously detaches and alienates energy from actual social relations and cheapens local attachments to land, as well as efforts to produce autonomous, self-managed livelihoods. This talk will focus on the strategies of cheap energy that continue to underpin the power dynamics of energy transitions in different places. It will engage with concepts such as: *reparation ecologies and the demands for dignity and revaluation *to encourage a discussion over how struggles for autonomous livelihoods in the dialectics between waste and value can redefine how we might live differently in a world made by capitalism's ecology. *Bios: * - Jason W. Moore is an environmental historian and historical geographer at Binghamton University, where he is professor of sociology. He is author or editor, most recently, of Capitalism in the Web of Life (Verso, 2015), Capitalocene o Anthropocene? (Ombre Corte, 2017), Anthropocene or Capitalocene? Nature, History, and the Crisis of Capitalism (PM Press, 2016), and, with Raj Patel, A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things (University of California Press, 2017). - Jaume Franquesa is Associate Professor of Anthropology at The State University of New York at Buffalo. His research agenda focuses on the relationship between the commodification of resources and the making of local livelihoods. His interests include energy transitions, land-rural politics, and processes of cultural heritage making. His most recent book is Power Struggles: Dignity, Value, and the Renewable Energy Frontier in Spain (Indiana University Press, 2018). This talk will be co-chaired by Andrew Baldwin and Carlos Tornel.

They mark the symbolic values of our relationships. Digital communication is very smart and useful but it confines us inside the same rectangular electronic frame. There is also the possibility to make a follow-up story/ images by asking people to continue on what they have received. This is perfect to create a collective myth among ecoversities followers! This has become an urgent task as the whole modern crisis- which is we, the educated turning against life and nature stems from the alienation from our own biology, our way of knowing and being. We need to look at design education very differently to explore this and abstract some of the fundamental aspects that make design education unique and apart from other 'disciplines' in every aspect- content, pedagogy, process, ambiance, etc. What are the fundamental principles in design education which can be used to learn every other discipline? How can we re-imagine the foundation year to be the foundation not just for learning design but for every other 'discipline'? jinan jinankb,in -- To reply to the author of this message, select "reply"; to reply to the whole list, select "reply to all". --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Radical Ecological Democracy" group.
