Honoring our Ecoversities Alliance Ancestors Aloha friends Join us to honor the Ecoversities Alliance Ancestors - 1st November, (6am Hawai'i, 9am PDT, 10am Mexico, 12noon EST, 5pm GMT, 6pm ECT, 9:30pm India, 11pm Thailand), 90min Join Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86725526782?pwd=GzDMAx3ORuYKIAWbwDR5iSilXzNAqM.1 The Ecoversities Alliance is 10 years old this year (August 2025). The roots of the Alliance were entangled through relationships built during the Enlivened Learning project (2012-2013). These relationships supported the manifestation of the first gathering at Tamera Ecovillage in southern Portugal with 50+ kindred folks from many parts of the world experimenting in the field of higher education. The Ecoversities Alliance has flourished into a thriving international and multi-regional knowledge movement and community of practice. Along the way a number of folks who came (or almost came) to that initial meeting were part of initial conversations with the co-founders of Ecoversities. They all emphasized the importance of building inter-regional and trans-local alliances to transform our education systems. Sadly several of these folks have passed and are now our ancestors. In this 10 year anniversary we want to make space to honor the life and work of these Ecoversities Ancestors and introduce their contributions to a new generation of Ecoversitarians. Please join us on the 1st of November, a time of honoring the ancestors in many parts of the world, to celebrate the life of these friends and ancestors of the Ecoversities Alliance. Session facilitated by Udi Mandel, Kelly Teamey and sierra ying allen, Spanish Translation available. Some of people being honored on this day and those who will be speaking about them are: Narcisse Blood (Blackfoot elder and co-founder of the Kainai Studies programme at Red Crow Community College) - speaker Ryan First Diver (Narcisse’s friend, student and colleague at the Kainai Studies programme, Beaver Bundle keeper, snake-wrangler). Liora Adler (Gaia U International) - speaker Andrew Langford (Liora’s husband and Gaia U co-founder, permaculturist innovator and educator). Gustavo Esteva (co-founder of Unitierra, Mexico, de-professionalized intellectual, writer) - speaker Yeyo Beltran (Gustavo’s friend, colleague, co-founder of Unitierra and Herramientas para el buen vivir). Pracha Hutanuwatr (co-founder of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists; Spirit in Education Movement; and Ecovillage Transition Asia) - speaker Petra Carman (Pracha’s student, colleague, and facilitator, co-founder of Karuna Society). There will be space during the call to share practices of remembrance and spontaneous tributes to any of the other beautiful souls who have become fertile soil from which the Alliance grows. Ecuador in Resistance — 23 Days in the Streets / Ecuador en resistencia — 23 días en las calles

It all began after President Daniel Noboa announced an increase in diesel prices. Since then, hundreds of people have taken to the streets, to the plazas, to their territories — to protest a subsidy cut that affects us all. The strike was called by CONAIE (the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador), and what began as a legitimate demand has become a collective cry. I have gone out to protest. I have seen mothers, children, and elders. I have felt the strength of the people from the countryside — Indigenous peoples, those impoverished by a system that seeks to crush them — yet when a collective call for dignity is heard, they rise up and put their bodies on the line to defend Sumak Kawsay, the right to live well. Every protest has been met with repression: police and military attack without distinction. >From the government’s official discourse — or that of its spokesperson — they insist on calling those who protest terrorists. They repress us even while disguised as “humanitarian aid”: entering cities like Otavalo, where the “help” they bring is tear gas, beatings, fear, arrests, and bullets. The Noboa government believes it can disguise its repression as “security measures,” deploying tanks, police, and soldiers. It believes it can imprison people and then accuse them of terrorism to criminalize social protest. But no threat can silence a movement whose resistance is legitimate. Protesting is not terrorism — it is the exercise of a deep, historical right, woven by the Indigenous nationalities of this land. Yesterday, I spoke with a friend who is in the middle of the protests in Imbabura. She told me she cannot sleep because of the clashes, that the bombs never stop, that the air has become unbreathable, that supplies are running out. Listening to her fills me with helplessness, fear, and the certainty that — from wherever we are — we must keep speaking about this. This has to stop. In Otavalo, an Indigenous city, acts have occurred that go beyond any logic of confrontation and are profoundly racist: last week, the braids of two young Kichwa men were cut off. In the Kichwa cosmovision, hair is not an ornament; it is a bridge to the ancestors, a thread connecting heaven and earth. Cutting it is desecration — an intimate violence, a direct aggression against the identity of our Indigenous nationalities. I write this from Quito, trying to hold with words what others hold with their bodies in the streets. What can we do when power responds with tanks and lies? Keep making noise. Let the world listen. Let international media know what is happening here. Let the collective dignity that sustains us not be extinguished by fear. If you have contacts with media outside Ecuador, please share this. If you know of actions that can help stop this, let us know. We need this regime to respect the lives of the people who inhabit these territories. A big, collective hug — with the strength of our peoples rising from the Andes. At. Yo he salido a manifestar. He visto madres, niños, ancianos.
