Education for Societal Transformation - Call for Short Contributions!
by Steven J. Klees 31 Jul '23

31 Jul '23

Please circulate this Call far and wide! It is also available here: https://www.norrag.org/call-for-contributions-norrag-special-issue-10/ *Call for Contributions! NORRAG Special Issue **10**: “Education for Societal Transformation: * *Alternatives for a Just Future”* NORRAG, an associate program of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland, invites contributions to a NORRAG Special Issue (NSI) on *Education for Societal Transformation: Alternatives for a Just Future* We invite submissions of short written articles (typically around 1200-1500 words) that can speak to a wider global audience of policymakers, academics, researchers, civil society organizations, and other actors working in education. Articles should be submitted in and will be published in English. If you wish to send one in a different language, please let us know. We seek a good balance of articles from diverse contributors in different regions. As a first step, please indicate your interest by sending us a* short abstract *(up to 250 words*) by 15 September 2023*. We will advise authors by *15 October 2023* whether or not to submit a full manuscript. The drafts of full manuscripts are due by *15 January 2024*. Papers will then be peer reviewed with feedback provided by *1 March 2024*. Revised manuscripts should be submitted by *1 April 2024* to meet the publishing goal of this Special Issue by *1 September 2024*. We also plan to organize sessions highlighting Special Issue contributions at the Comparative and International Education Society annual conference in *March 2025*. *Background: * This Special Issue has been developed and will be edited by members of The Alternatives Project <https://www.thealternativesproject.org/> (TAP). TAP is a diverse, transnational collective of progressive academics, union members, civil society activists, and social movement participants concerned with building a global collective critical voice oriented towards education and societal transformation. TAP envisions and works towards a radical rethinking of education and society globally. The current social, economic, political, and educational arrangements reproduce relations of power that perpetuate profound inequities and ultimately threaten life on the planet. We need alternative pedagogies and just, regenerative education systems that will support the social transformations required to create a more equitable and sustainable world. Co-existing and interrelated global crises are pushing humanity and the living planet towards social, political, economic, and ecological collapse. These crises – currently seen in the pandemic, structural inequalities, police brutality and racism, entrenched patriarchy, accelerating climate chaos, and the constant threat of wars – are driven globally by capitalism and militarism. We must seize this unique historical moment to reconceive and radically change *public* education as an entry point for deeper societal transformations. We can learn from the struggles and lessons from organized students and teachers, the trade union movement as a whole, democratic community-based organizations – including associations of minorities, migrants and refugees – as well as independent media, organizations, and professionals that are committed to advancing justice in the flawed, real societies in which we live. The goals of alternative education for societal transformation address one or more of the following dimensions of justice: social, environmental, economic, and political. (For further details on the context, see the TAP “Statement” <https://www.thealternativesproject.org/statement> which will open the Special Issue.) *Call*: We invite authors to draw on the theoretical imaginaries and practical experiences of researcher-educators and on diverse scholarly traditions that characterize the societal crises that we face as well as the education alternatives that could contribute to addressing these crises by transforming local, national, and global structures. Specifically, we are interested in non-reformist reforms (NRR) that pose a challenge to underlying structures. Without debating what makes a “NRR,” we hope contributors will focus on alternatives that they believe are NRRs. Of relevance are manuscripts about alternative curricula, pedagogies, and community relations in education at the preschool, primary, secondary, and tertiary levels as well as in nonformal programs organized for youth and adults, including those connected to worker organizations and social movements. We hope to include visions and practices for educational alternatives that promote societal transformation in various contexts in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, North America, and the Pacific Rim. We are particularly interested in manuscripts authored or coauthored by individuals from the Global South. This NORRAG Special Issue will include two interrelated sections that will highlight certain themes. *Authors should indicate where their contribution fits within the following outline:* *Projected Outline:* 1. *Societal Alternatives* for Social, Climate, Economic, and Political Justice a. Theoretical models for transformed/just societies b. Examples of efforts to build transformed/just societies 2. *Education Alternatives* for Societal Transformation 1. Alternative theoretical or practical examples in PreK-Higher *formal *education (e.g., anti-racist education, anti-patriarchal education, climate/environmental crisis education, cosmopolitical learning, critical multicultural education, critical pedagogy, democratic schools, holistic education, indigenous education, peace education, social justice education, spiritual education) 2. Alternative theoretical or practical examples in *nonformal* education *Guest Editors **(feel free to contact anyone listed to discuss a contribution): * - *Frank Adamson*, California State University-Sacramento, adamson(a)csus.edu, - *Maria Ron Balsera*, Center for Economic and Social Rights, MariaRonBalsera(a)hotmail.com - *Rezan Benatar*, Independent Consultant, rebenatar(a)yahoo.com <ebenatar(a)yahoo.com> - *Michael Gibbons*, American University, gibbons(a)american.edu - *Mark Ginsburg*, University of Maryland-College Park, mginsbur(a)umd.edu) - *Steven Klees*, University of Maryland-College Park, sklees(a)umd.edu - *Giuseppe Lipari*, Scuola Normale Superiore, giuseppe.lipari(a)sns.it - *Carol Anne Spreen*, New York University, spreen(a)nyu.edu - *Deepa Srikantaiah*, University of Maryland-College Park, dsrikant(a)umd.edu *Submission of Abstracts and Full Manuscripts* to Mark Ginsburg ( [email protected])*:* Deadline for submission of abstracts: *15 September 2023* Deadline for first draft of full articles: *15 January 2024*

Please help signing and gathering support: Open letter to leave the oil in the soil in the Yasuni - Ecuadorian Amazon Forest
by Miriam Lang 28 Jul '23

28 Jul '23

Dear Friends, we have drafted this open letter for the Yasuní campaign in the Ecuador group of the Ecosocial and Intercultural Pact of the South<https://pactoecosocialdelsur.com/manifesto-for-an-ecosocial-energy-transiti…>, as something that should be said from outside and does not seem to be and intromission into internal politics of Ecuador. On 20 August 2023, the people of Ecuador are called to a historic referendum: they will decide whether oil exploitation should be extended into the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest or banned there forever. In the Yasuni National Park, the region in question, there are more species of trees and shrubs on a single hectare than on the entire North American continent. The popular decision of 20 August is not only about the future: It also involves dismantling the oil infrastructure that should never have been installed in a part of the Yasuní National Park, namely in Block 43 or ITT. More information is in the letter itself. We are asking you to gather as massive support as possible, from all over the world, and as quickly as possible so that we can go public with a letter that has impact on the public opinion in the next week. It can be people from art, politics, academics, whatever. But also organisations are important! Here is the letter: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe40OOgDrA85TjLttImLi7VHnICTi_pzI7… It would be great if you could forward it to some people you know. Thanks in advance for your solidarity! Take care, Miriam [cid:[email protected]]

Dear friends, Please accept my apologies for crossposting. I'm sharing the latest number of the journal *Piezas* (in Spanish) dedicated to Gustavo Esteva. This might be of interest to anyone working on matters of post-development, decoloniality and degrowth (among many others), as well as to anyone familiar with Gustavo's work, with some good pointers for folks starting to familiarize themselves with his writings. You can find a copy here: https://if.edu.mx/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Piezas-36_digital.pdf <https://if.edu.mx/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Piezas-36_digital.pdf> If you can read Spanish, this is very much a recommended reading! Dear colleagues, This article on Zapatista autonomous education ( 'educación verdadera') as a pluriversal alternative that we have just released in the *British Journal of Sociology of Education* may be of interest to the members of the list. Decolonizing education in Latin America: critical environmental and intercultural education as an indigenous pluriversal alternative <https://url6649.tandfonline.com/ls/click?upn=odl8Fji2pFaByYDqV3bjGMQo8st9of…> Unfortunately, there is a paywall established by the journal, but the first 50 accesses with this link can read it for free. https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/GZGQKSFGMIZ9DEYUNSTQ/full?target=10.1080… In any case, if you are interested in the paper just send us a personal email and we'll sort it out. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Please *send them directly to the authors, and not to the list as a whole*, so as not to overload it with emails. Thank you, and all best wishes, Jorge ------------------------------------- Jorge Garcia-Arias, PhD Full Professor, International Political Economy & Critical Development Studies University of Leon (Spain) jrgara(a)unileon.es ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, I was reading a summary on the Book, Ecosophies of Freedom: Suturing Social, Ecological & Spiritual Rift. This seems to be about essays that might relate to collapse but do we know of communities that have accepted this fate and are therefore finding new ways to relate with it, to each other, nature etc? Fwd: Changing the tide: Join the revolution to fight climate change with "SÍ al Yasuní"
by Andrea González Andino 22 Jul '23

22 Jul '23

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: salo.jose.andrade(a)gmail.com <salo.jose.andrade(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Jun 23, 2023, 5:10 PM Subject: Changing the tide: Join the revolution to fight climate change with "SÍ al Yasuní" To: Ecoversities Friends <ecoversitiesfriends(a)googlegroups.com> Hi! My name is Salo, and I want to share an ecological activist story that will change the history of our planet. Right now, Ecuador is facing an upcoming referendum on the 20th of August to preserve one of the most biodiverse places in our Amazon jungle, the Yasuní. This referendum is the first time a society organizes itself and urges government authorities to change the laws and prohibit oil extraction in a sensitive biodiverse area. Here is the first tangible action that can inspire more people and create a shift in the tide of our society toward a new way of living, where nature, water, soil, air, and beings (humans and more-than-humans) are treasured and taken care of with respect, responsibility, and commitment. This story started ten years ago, and right now, we are launching a national campaign in Ecuador to share the importance of saying "SÍ al Yasuní" (Yes to the Yasuní) with the voting society. We aim to reach the majority of the voters so they can also say yes to life, yes to our future, and yes to the coming generations. You can find more information and ways to join the campaign here: English <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZSWmYWvcpqx525tEpGbgGiDIiTrtfsu_/view?usp=…> and Spanish <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1klQZfz1Pd_uyJFAvUxfZ-Uquc7WsNum0/view?usp=…> . Please write back if you have any questions and share this message with all your family, friends, and loved ones. We need all the voices we can get to share this historical step! A new article on RED - Earth Uprisings - une histoire"
by Pallav Das 19 Jul '23

19 Jul '23

Dear friends, A new article, "Earth Uprisings - une histoire" has been published on RED. As the pace of environmental degradation and climate change intensifies all around us, how does civil society express its opposition to neoliberalism and plutocracy? Christine Dann scrutinizes the popular movement, the “Earth Uprising”, in France, to discern the evolving design for organizing protest against insidious elite structures all over the world. Please take a look and share with your networks. The author is copied here in case you would like to write to her directly. https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/earth-uprisings-une-histoire/ Best wishes, Pallav
