STOP DESIGN THINKING - Save yourselves from design thinkers
by Jinan K B 23 Jun '23

23 Jun '23

STOP DESIGN THINKING I have uploaded a paper at Academia and medium about how to understand the modern mindset by examining the term design thinking. Join me to discuss this https://www.academia.edu/s/b416e3384b or you can read about the same at https://jinankb.medium.com/stop-design-thinking-c6ffc24148d1 One doesn’t require an anthropologist, sociologist, psychologist, and least of all a cognitive scientist to understand the modern mindset. Just a bit of common sense (the most uncommon in modernity which is what schooling takes away) will do. A proper examination of the term ‘design thinking’ will do. How they bring in two totally diverse phenomena together in words and pretend the job is done. This is the same drama with first fragmenting knowledge into various subjects and making the pretense of integrating all by just creating a few terms- multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, etc… It is interesting another nature of the modern mindset which can be called an ‘afterthought’. This means first destroy, make this as default and then pretend for the first time a solution is provided. Take the usage ‘out of the box thinking. A much-celebrated usage…. The stupidity of the modern mindset is that they are not asking why are you in the box in the first place. Who put us in? So, our default setting is in the box, fragmented……. And instead of trying to find the root cause, a temporary solution is offered. "Development As Service" - Videos

Dear friends, Earlier this year, our Dutch colleague, Dorine Van Norren, wrote an incisive critique of the contemporary development model on REDWeb, and contrasted that approach with the inherent strengths of some traditional societal perspectives, which offer alternative perspectives on that question of global importance. Here are a couple of links to Dorine's video lectures, which further explain her immensely well articulated ideas. Please take a look. Dorine is copied on this email if you would like to contact her directly. Best wishes, Pallav 1. Remembering A Martyr: REDWEb salutes the life and work of Nagihan Akarsel
by Pallav Das 10 Oct '22

10 Oct '22

Dear friends, Last week, *Nagihan Akarsel*, a prominent Kurdish intellectual and political activist was brutally gunned down in Southern Kurdistan. She was a dedicated advocate for the Kurdish women's revolution and an inspiration for people reimagining and reconstructing the framework of democracy, both, in the Kurdish lands as well as abroad. REDWeb salutes the memory of *Nagihan Akarsel*. May her life and her commitment to the idea of Jineology, Democratic Modernity and the realization of the dreams of the Kurdish people inspire all of us to stay steadfast on our paths toward meaningful change, and may her martyrdom galvanize us to overcome our own fears to work boldly to construct a new world defined by socio-economic and political equality and ecological sanity. We stand in solidarity with all our comrades and colleagues in the Kurdish lands and beyond in this hour of mourning and profound sadness. Copied below is the note of remembrance received from our colleagues at the "Academy of Democratic Modernity" as well as a link to a deeply reflective personal tribute to *Nagihan's* effervescent life by *Zilan Diyar*, a Kurdish women's activist. https://democraticmodernity.com/in-memory-of-nagihan-akarsel/ We add our voice to the Kurdish slogan, "*Jin, Jiyan, Azadi*!" (Women, Life, Freedom!) And, as we say in Hindustani: *"Saathee Nagihan Zindabad!"* (Long live Comrade Nagihan!) Our colleagues from "The Academy of Democratic Modernity" and the "Jineology" initiative are copied on this email, in case you would like to express your solidarity with them in their moment of terrible loss. In solidarity, Pallav Remembering *Nagehan Akarsel* *Nagihan Akarsel* was a prominent figure in the Kurdish community and politically active for thirty years. She was a respected journalist and author, imprisoned for years for her bold and honest views and her active involvement in Kurdish women's liberation. In Rojava (Eastern Kurdistan), *Akarsel* promoted a highly innovative educational initiative in the field of Jineology - the science of women, and in the aftermath of the 2014 genocide and femicide wreaked on the women of Shengal (Sinjar) by the Islamic State (ISIS), she pursued an incisive and crucial investigation to bring the culprits to justice. Most recently, *Akarsel *worked with women from Southern Kurdistan at the Jineology Research Centre, where she established a Kurdish women's library, and also edited the "Jineology" magazine. Last Tuesday, *Akarsel* was gunned down with eleven shots in front of her flat in Sulaymaniyah (Southern Kurdistan). While the culprits have been arrested and an investigation is underway, all signs point to a state sponsored assasination. With *Akarsel's* brutal murder, a warning has been sent to everyone working on the significant task of organizing and crafting the intellectual underpinnings of a movement for radical freedom for women. However, the commitment to pursue *Akarsel's *dreams is deeply set in the ideology and practice of Jineology. We are aware that activists and intellectuals, especially women who work with clarity and determination to build the path to a liberated society are a threat to the existing system. But, the memory of our comrade, *Nagihan Akarsel* and our deep commitment to her convictions gives us the strength to pursue our goal of "Democratic Modernity" in the inspiring company of our colleagues from the Jineology initiative. In solidarity, Academy Of Democratic Modernity

A new article on REDWeb - "Giorgia on our minds": Exploring "alternatives" as the ultra- right overtakes Italy
by Pallav Das 09 Oct '22

09 Oct '22

Friends, A new article, "Giorgia on our minds": Exploring "alternatives" as the ultra-right overtakes Italy" has just been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website: https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/giorgia-on-our-minds-exploring-alter… As the ultra-right prepares to take power in Italy following the recent elections, a major soul searching is underway among the left and progressive circles on what ails their movement, and how to reconstruct an agenda to appeal to the alienated Italian electorate. Mitja Stefancic probes the recent failures of the Italian left and concludes that progressive politics can only be revived if alternative political movements are accompanied by reliable economic “alternatives” that challenge the top-down neoliberal model. A new article on REDWeb - "Technology and (dis0empowerment: A call to technologists"
by Pallav Das 01 Oct '22

01 Oct '22

Friends, A new article, "Technology and (dis)empowerment: A call to technologists" has been uploaded on the Radical Ecological Democracy website. https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/technology-and-disempowerment-a-call… Could technology become an unambiguous force of social good, and help usher in a more equitable and fairer ecosystem capable of handling challenges of inequality, exploitation, poverty and climate change? Aaditeshwar Seth answers this important question in his recently published book, "Technology and (Dis)empowerment: A Call to Technologists". In this article, Seth discusses the many ways in which technology could aim to overturn hegemonic and unjust social and economic structures to create an equal and just society, a strikingly bold thread running through his book. Please take a look and join the discussion on REDlistserv or the website discussion forum. The author is copied on this email in case you would like to contact him directly. Also, this coming winter Aaditeshwar and I will be joined by a group of alternative technology thinkers and practitioners in a series of web-discussions to probe the emerging rift between technology and society, and how to imagine and craft an alternative paradigm for integrating appropriate technology into the world's socio-economic structures. We would love to hear your ideas about what this series should explore and what topics would be of your immediate concern. We look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Pallav
