Escape from Capitalism
by Steven J. Klees 03 Jun '26

That's the name of Clara Mattei's new book. I just watched the best short (40 minute) analysis of capitalism I have *ever* seen in her interview on British TV.. She's an Italian professor of economics at the University of Tulsa and she was absolutely brilliant! It is must viewing for your classes if you teach but it really is worth your 40 minutes to watch it. It starts US/Europe oriented but ends with Gramsci and the Global South. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M_dq_0ljsc Best, Steve Steven J. Your presence, solidarity messages, and thoughtful contributions made the gathering deeply meaningful for all of us. Our friends in Rojava were moved by the solidarity. At a moment when universities in Rojava are struggling to preserve their institutional autonomy, multilingual education, women’s participation at all levels, and democratic educational structures, it was incredibly moving to witness scholars, educators, students, and organizers from so many different places come together in solidarity. Your contributions helped affirm that these struggles are not isolated, and that there is a growing international community committed to supporting autonomous, democratic education in Rojava. We are especially grateful to everyone who spoke, shared updates and resources, helped with outreach, and participated in the discussion on how to strengthen transnational academic solidarity moving forward. This network is only beginning to take shape, and your engagement has already given it life, direction, and hope. An email group has been set up that will now serve as the primary communication space for the Global Scholars’ Network for Rojava Universities. Future meeting announcements, events, updates, statements, and collaborative initiatives will be shared through this list. Please email below to sign up if you are not already. We also wanted to announce that the network’s upcoming general meeting will take place on June 2. The Zoom link and details are below. If you have questions, suggestions, materials to share, or would like to become more involved in the network’s activities, please feel free to reach out to us at: globalscholarsnetworkforrojava(a)gmail.com With gratitude and solidarity, Global Scholars’ Network for Rojava Universities General Meeting Details: Time: Jun 2, 2026 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85615739184?pwd=VLTCI8w5YZJzb1cbSTjoHlp5RUrPxa.1 Meeting ID: 856 1573 9184 Passcode: 480949

Teaching resource: Carbon Pricing Simulation Game
by Genevieve Shanahan 11 May '26

Hi all, Just a quick message to share this Carbon Pricing Simulation Game I've created: Game: https://genshanahan.github.io/carbon-pricing-simulation-game/ GitHub: https://github.com/genshanahan/carbon-pricing-simulation-game One big challenge I've run into in teaching critical perspectives on sustainable business and society is helping students understand the basics of carbon pricing so they can critically appraise different approaches in good faith. To address this I created the Carbon Pricing Simulation Game: a free, browser-based interactive classroom simulation that walks students through carbon pricing from first principles. Students join on their phones via QR code and compete as firms through five regulatory regimes - Free Market, Command & Control, Carbon Tax, Cap, and Cap & Trade - so they can feel how each pricing mechanism shapes incentives before we critically appraise them. The critical appraisal is supported by suggested discussion questions on the final page of the simulator, highlighting issues relating to global climate justice, green colonialism, assumptions regarding economic growth, etc. My students and I had a LOT of fun with it in class this term. It's open-source, requires no downloads or accounts, and runs in ~90 minutes. If you teach about the climate crisis please try it out and let me know what you think!
