Human Rights in Eastern Civilisations

Please find the details of the book from my PhD supervisor. It is a fantastic topic and would interest many of you. This has been one of his dream projects and a magnificent contribution by Prof Surya P. Subedi to the field of Human Rights *_Professor Surya Subedi’s contribution to human rights and to decolonising _**_the curriculum_* There has been a great deal of debate in the recent past about decolonising the curriculum in universities around the globe and a call for the use of more inclusive and diverse literature for teaching. The values of Western civilisations and their contribution to the development of human rights, the rule of law and democracy have been asserted in a wide range of literature. In contrast, few studies have been conducted on the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of human rights in the wider sense of the term. Western scholars are not usually familiar with the vast body of scholarship in Eastern civilisations; nor do many of them go far back in history to understand and appreciate the contribution of Eastern civilisations. This intellectual gap renders the work of such scholars limited in scope. It is in this context that this new book examines the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the United Nations Human Rights agenda. Professor Surya P. Subedi QC, OBE, DCL of the School of Law at the University of Leeds has demonstrated in his recent publication entitled “Human Rights in Eastern Civilisations” published by a major British publishing house, Edward Elgar, how cross-fertilisation of values between the Eastern and Western civilisations has taken place and how the notion of the universality of human rights has been enriched by the values of different civilisations. In his book, Professor Subedi has analysed the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the UN human rights agenda. The book focuses on the norms underpinning Eastern philosophies to assess the extent to which the ancient Eastern civilisations already had human rights values embedded in them. Various chapters in the book explore the expression of values in the scriptures and practices of the Eastern philosophies, assessing their influence on the contemporary understanding of human rights. Rejecting the argument based on the so-called “Asian Values” that is often used to undermine the universality of human rights, the book argues that secularism, personal liberty, tolerance, and universalism are at the heart of the main scriptures of Eastern civilisations. When discussing human rights, this study is not only referring to human rights in the modern sense of the term – that is, the human rights developed mainly after the establishment of the United Nations and within the framework of Western political thought. Rather, this study is considering human rights in a wider sense and in a much earlier historical context. Weaving a World Where Many Worlds Fit: Global Tapestry of Alternatives (Zapatista tour of Europe) 28 June, 1 pm GMT, 3 pm CET, 6.30 pm IST

*(see contact details below; do not write back on lists) * * * *Weaving a World Where Many Worlds Fit: The Global Tapestry of Alternatives* *** * https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/weaving-a-world-where-many-worlds-fit-the-gl… <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/weaving-a-world-where-many-worlds-fit-the-gl…> <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/weaving-a-world-where-many-worlds-fit-the-gl…> Weaving a World Where Many Worlds Fit: The Global Tapestry of Alternatives <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/weaving-a-world-where-many-worlds-fit-the-gl…> Weaving a World Where Many Worlds Fit: The Global Tapestry of Alternatives www.eventbrite.co.uk About this event As the world struggles to find ways out of multiple global crises (ecological, climate, inequality, health, food), myriad alternatives are emerging, grounded in specific ecological and socio-economic contexts, and based on diverse cosmologies and ethical principles that challenge the dominant capitalism-heteropatriarchal system. While attempting to sustain all life on earth, these transformative alternatives are also innovating on a full range of (non)human concerns, including food, water, health, education, livelihoods, governance, culture, justice. However, as they are often isolated, there is a need to build more bridges amongst them to enable cross-cultural and cross- mutual learning and critical engagement, and new collective envisioning of possible futures leading to a critical mass for macro-change. This is a free event, but we are requesting donations to support the Zapatista visit to the UK. /All funds raised will go directly to the groups who have taken on the financial burden of funding the Zapatista visit to the UK./ *Speakers details:* *The Global Tapestry of Alternatives (GTA)*aims to weave this transformative alternatives. It is a non-hierarchical bottom up process, seeking to create solidarity and strategic alliances amongst alternatives at local, regional and global levels. In this process of ‘weaving’ the GTA locates itself in and/or helps to initiate interactions among these transformative alternatives, and organises through light, horizontal, democratic, inclusive and non-centralised structures. As an ever-expanding, complex set of tapestries, woven together by already existing communal or collective webs, the GTA builds on and expands on already existing and new alternatives to dominant regimes and promotes regional, national and global encounters, and close and synergistic linkages with existing organisations (e.g. the World Social Forum and Grassroots to Global). The GTA embraces the Zapatista’ Declaration for life and welcome their visit to Europe! Their revolutionary struggle has been one of the sources of inspiration for GTA (core members and endorsers). The GTA honours the Zapatista’s proposal to build ‘A World Where Many Worlds Fit.’ In this webinar, speakers will honour the Zapatista struggle by presenting the GTA’s vision and ideas about radical change, illustrated by real-life experiences from various groups in different geographic locations. *Speakers*(all of whom are in the GTA Core Team): *Shrishtee Bajpai*(India) Activist-researcher based in Pune, India and member of Kalpavriksh. Her research is focussed on documenting, analysing, and networking alternatives to development. She helps in coordinating the Vikalp Sangam (alternative confluence) process in India. *Ana Cecilia Dinerstein*(Argentinean/UK) teaches political sociology and critical, decolonial and feminist theory at the University of Bath. She created the global politics of hope: a post-disciplinary and intersectoral field for radical transformation *Arturo Escobar*(Colombia/USA): Arturo is a Colombian activist-researcher, working on territorial struggles against extractivism and on post-development regional transitions, and ontological design. He taught anthropology and political ecology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill until 2018. TBC *Ashish Kothari*(India): Founder-member of Indian environmental group Kalpavriksh. He has (co)authored or (co)edited over 30 books, including Pluriverse and Alternative Futures, and helps coordinate the Vikalp Sangam and Radical Ecological Democracy processes. *Vasna Ramasar*(South Africa/Sweden): Academic and activist from South Africa living and working in Sweden. She has always been involved in environmental justice, politics of environment and alternatives to development. The center fosters a young generation of globally oriented environmental specialists. Equipped with international research, management and communication skills, even entry-level professionals will have a significant impact on the increasingly important field of climate adaptation. The Centre facilitates careers in the fields of water security and climate adaptation. A master's degree program on "Water Security and Global Change" and a joint doctoral program are being established in Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai and Dresden (ABCD), in addition to dialogue formats for young scholars. Graduates of Theology will thus have interesting options for further academic qualification, for example with the goal of a doctorate in the field of Climate Ethics and Development. The Centre does not provide full stipends, but offers a Start-up phase for project design and scholarship application in Germany. The Aachen Institute for Theology is part of the Cluster 3 "Transfer Strategies for Climate Adaptation". It regularly offers the M.A.-Programm Theology and Global Development (Theologie und Globale Entwicklung) <https://www.rwth-aachen.de/cms/root/Studium/Vor-dem-Studium/Studiengaenge/L…> in German language and conducts research in Theology and Technology.
