Dear PEDAGOG Friends, This new article (co-authored with Rosaleen Duffy, Francis Massé, Adeniyi Asiyanbi, & Esther Marijnen) was commissioned by and headlines the recent issue of *Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development*. It speaks to but also seeks to advance the ongoing debates regarding the dominant models of global conservation, while offering outlines of reimagining environmentalism beyond the aestheticization of environment and the romanticizing of indigenous visions of environmentalism by big conservation NGOs who have failed to walk the talk repeatedly. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00139157.2021.1924574 To make it available beyond the firewalls, I have put the full-text PDF in this publicly accessible folder, which also contains a few other reader-friendly articles on Climate Justice and Planetary Justice (Co-authored with Frank Biermann, Aarti Gupta, and Chuks Okereke) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0khzymm4o1pyh9s/AACctTBrEI7xYeozEgJIGaeOa?dl=0 My best wishes, Prakash --------------------------------------------------------------------- Prakash Kashwan, Ph.D. (Google Scholar <https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=SRC3hyMAAAAJ&hl>) Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Connecticut Co-Director, Research Program on Economic and Social Rights, Human Rights Institute Editor, Environmental Politics Vice Chair/Program Chair, Environmental Studies Section, International Studies Association (ISA) University of Connecticut 365 Fairfield Way, Storrs, CT 06269 Phone: 860-486-7951 https://kashwan.net/ <https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkashwan.n…>

Chaired by Dr S A Hamed Hosseini<https://www.newcastle.edu.au/profile/hamed-hosseini>, the leader of AFRN<https://www.newcastle.edu.au/research/centre/alternative-futures-regional-p…>, and Dr Michelle Maloney<https://www.earthlaws.org.au/about-us/aela-team/michellemaloney/>, director of NENA<https://www.neweconomy.org.au/>, the fourth webinar set on 10 September 2021, hosts three world-renowned progressive thinkers and legendary activists, including influential public intellectual Professor Noam Chomsky<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noam_Chomsky>, distinguished American historian and a political economist Professor Gar Alperovitz<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gar_Alperovitz>, and prominent ecofeminist Associate Professor Ariel Salleh<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariel_Salleh>. Register Here<https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/re-imagining-quality-of-life-and-social-wel…> The webinar is part of our University's contribution to the 2021 Social Science Week<https://socialsciences.org.au/socialsciencesweek/event/post-capitalist-visi…> in Australia by highlighting the historical role of Social Sciences in our troubled times. There are three presentations: 1. “Imagining the Future – if there is one!” presented by Prof. Noam Chomsky 2. “Democratizing the Economy: Practical Advances and Long-Term Strategy” presented by Prof. Gar Alperovitz 3. “Some Ecological Feminist Thoughts on Wellbeing” presented by A./Prof. Ariel Salleh Background Our post-COVID19 communities have been fast and deeply transformed from early 2020. Quality of life will be lower and, hence, poorer, in many places around the world as we cope with the economic downturn, the fracturing of community life, the aggravation of inequalities, and above all, the fast intensification of climate change (2021 IPCC report<https://www.ipcc.ch/2021/08/09/ar6-wg1-20210809-pr/>). Planetary life is under a historically unprecedented threat. The atomic scientists’ doomsday clock points to 100 seconds to midnight<https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/current-time/> (as Chomsky reminds us). Our research argues that the global pandemic has also shown us that radical transformations are not only possible but unavoidable to prevent greater implosions. Living through a slow- or de-growth status – where collective “well-living” is gaining primacy over hedonistic well-being – has awakened us to the implausibility of returning to the old normal. Now is the time to quarantine our minds from the fatal cognitive virus of the capitalistic myth of “There Is No Alternative” (Hosseini, 2020<https://globaldialogue.isa-sociology.org/on-the-urgency-of-reintegrating-wi…>a). What role can social sciences play in such a pivotal time in human history? The most noticeable form of systemic failure in addressing global crises is the recent resurrection of excessive belief in the power of technology while overlooking the centrality of social relations and movements. The more this approach fails, the more it becomes authoritarian. In the current age of financial austerity imposed by the corporate welfare state, universities (expected to be the hotbeds of innovation and cutting-edge knowledge) are losing their autonomy to corporate interest. Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) is facing an identity crisis in such a bleak context. HASS needs to reinvent itself to restore its lost historical purpose and connections with meaningful change. In nutshell, to become a transformative force in the age of radical challenges, HASS (as part of society) needs to go through profound transformations both in terms of its institutional settings, theory, and practice; to make social sciences a liberating force, we first need to liberate the field by reintegrating it with the present progressive movements that seek system change (Hosseini, 2020b<https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14747731.2020.1736852>). AFRHub has launched a research project early this year to contribute to the rise of “transformative social sciences<https://www.routledge.com/The-Routledge-Handbook-of-Transformative-Global-S…>” in the critical area of quality of life studies. The ‘Re-imagining Quality of Life Post-COVID<https://www.newcastle.edu.au/research/centre/alternative-futures-regional-p…>’ project, delivered by the College of Human and Social Futures (CHSF), is a response to the current intertwined ecological, social and economic crises. The project aims to play an important part in articulating, connecting and strengthening the remarkable transformative work being carried out by people and organisations across the emerging ecosystem of transformative actors in Australia. The project through its meta-mapping practice aims to build a participatory platform and process, leading to a unifying picture of the projects, ideas, movements, and networks that offer viable alternatives to the faltering status quo, and to present this as a compelling case for wider coordination and support by all stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to give greater voice to grassroots and community organizations in reshaping public debates and policies on Quality of Life and Well-living<https://www.researchgate.net/publication/328828188_From_well-being_to_well-…>. There are two phases in this project: first, a national social survey that maps progressive initiatives and organisations which work towards transforming quality of life in the economic, political, social, ecological, and cultural spheres; and second in-depth interviews and focus group conversations with a smaller sample of the participants. by Vasna Ramasar 03 Sep '21

03 Sep '21

Dear All, I would like to invite you to join myself at Lund University for a conversation with Nnimmo Bassey and Richard Lusimbo on the relationship between activism and academia. Best Vasna The relationship between academia and activism in Africa Nnimmo Bassey (Health of Mother Earth Foundation) & Richard Lusimbo (Sexual Minorities Unganda) in conversation with Vasna Ramasar (Lund University Africa Strategy Group) Date: 21 September 2021 Time: 16:00 (CET) Finishes:17:00 (CET) Venue: Virtual Event with Zoom link: https://lu-se.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FoqOMqeqSsiNF7QavaWIyw. Type of Event: Webinar Lund University’s Africa Strategy Group invited you to a conversation on the relationship between academia and activism in Africa. In these times of multiple crises, informed action has become imperative if we are to find a sustainable pathway for humanity. Through initiatives such as the IPCC, science is contributing to the understanding of problems and possible solutions. In addition, universities have a role in producing research that has societal impact. Yet we still face many dilemmas including moving from knowledge to action; understanding how societal needs can inform research and agreeing on the manner in which academia and activism should interact. In this webinar, Vasna Ramasar will explore these and other challenges with Nnimmo Bassey and Richard Lusimbo, drawing from global and African perspectives. Some of the questions which will be explored include: In what ways should academia and activism be connected and are there limits to the engagement? What are the implications for research and activism when these boundaries are crossed by individuals and institutions? How do we navigate the politics at play when building a closer relationship between academia and activism? How do we further a sustainable future through both academic and activist work? Speakers: [Karen O'Brien: Vi trenger store systemendringer i verden ...] Nnimmo Bassey is an architect, poet and author. He is director of the ecological think-tank, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF<http://www.homef.org/>) with head office in Benin City, Nigeria. Human Rights in Eastern Civilisations

Please find the details of the book from my PhD supervisor. It is a fantastic topic and would interest many of you. This has been one of his dream projects and a magnificent contribution by Prof Surya P. Subedi to the field of Human Rights *_Professor Surya Subedi’s contribution to human rights and to decolonising _**_the curriculum_* There has been a great deal of debate in the recent past about decolonising the curriculum in universities around the globe and a call for the use of more inclusive and diverse literature for teaching. The values of Western civilisations and their contribution to the development of human rights, the rule of law and democracy have been asserted in a wide range of literature. In contrast, few studies have been conducted on the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of human rights in the wider sense of the term. Western scholars are not usually familiar with the vast body of scholarship in Eastern civilisations; nor do many of them go far back in history to understand and appreciate the contribution of Eastern civilisations. This intellectual gap renders the work of such scholars limited in scope. It is in this context that this new book examines the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the United Nations Human Rights agenda. Professor Surya P. Subedi QC, OBE, DCL of the School of Law at the University of Leeds has demonstrated in his recent publication entitled “Human Rights in Eastern Civilisations” published by a major British publishing house, Edward Elgar, how cross-fertilisation of values between the Eastern and Western civilisations has taken place and how the notion of the universality of human rights has been enriched by the values of different civilisations. In his book, Professor Subedi has analysed the values of Eastern civilisations and their contribution to the development of the UN human rights agenda. The book focuses on the norms underpinning Eastern philosophies to assess the extent to which the ancient Eastern civilisations already had human rights values embedded in them. Various chapters in the book explore the expression of values in the scriptures and practices of the Eastern philosophies, assessing their influence on the contemporary understanding of human rights. Rejecting the argument based on the so-called “Asian Values” that is often used to undermine the universality of human rights, the book argues that secularism, personal liberty, tolerance, and universalism are at the heart of the main scriptures of Eastern civilisations. When discussing human rights, this study is not only referring to human rights in the modern sense of the term – that is, the human rights developed mainly after the establishment of the United Nations and within the framework of Western political thought. Rather, this study is considering human rights in a wider sense and in a much earlier historical context. The following is the link to this new book: https://www.e-elgar.com/shop/gbp/human-rights-in-eastern-civilisations-9781… <https://www.e-elgar.com/shop/gbp/human-rights-in-eastern-civilisations-9781…> The flyer is attached for your reference. Since the 1950s, the concept of gross domestic product (GDP) has dominated discussions about economic progress and economic growth by nation-states, and narrow concepts around income and financial value have come to dominate individual notions of worth and wealth. However, the past few decades have seen a rising movement of people trying to describe and define ‘wellbeing’ and ‘quality of life’ in alternative ways – challenging the dominant capitalist and financial growth mode of thinking and building policy. This workshop series seeks to share information about different perspectives and stimulate discussion on these topics. The workshops are part of a larger project that invites individuals and organisations within the NENA network to share their ideas about how to define ‘quality of life’ and wellbeing in 21st Century Australia. WORKSHOP FORMAT: In each online workshop, guest speakers will present their views on how quality of life and social wellbeing can be defined and then offer provocations on the subject, to stimulate thinking and discussions. Participants will then be invited in real-time, to share their ideas and experiences. GUEST SPEAKERS - ADJUNCT PROFESSOR VICTORIA GRIEVE-WILLIAMS - Victoria Grieve-Williams is Warraimaay and a historian engaged with Aboriginal philosophy, truth-telling, decolonisation and its ramifications, in a world hurtling toward an uncertain future. -A/PROF.
