Fwd: [CICADA_COLLABORATORS] Tomorrow, STandD Presents--Pedagogies for the Anthropocene/Ecozoic (12:30-2:30)

Dear colleagues in PeDAGoG, see below, this may be of interest ashish -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [CICADA_COLLABORATORS] Tomorrow, STandD Presents--Pedagogies for the Anthropocene/Ecozoic (12:30-2:30) Date: Thu, 22 Oct 2020 18:31:53 +0000 From: CICADA Communications <cicada.admin(a)MCGILL.CA> Reply-To: CICADA Communications <cicada.admin(a)MCGILL.CA> To: CICADA_COLLABORATORS(a)LISTS.MCGILL.CA Dear CICADA community, Please find below information about a panel organized by the Centre for Society, Technology, and Development (STandD) at McGill University that might be of interest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear STandD Community, Please join us *Tomorrow* *via ZOOM*, _October 23rd from 12:30-2:30pm_, for our Upcoming Panel: *Pedagogies for the Anthropocene/Ecozoic * ***An Interdisciplinary Dialogue * ** ** *From the Anthropocene to the Ecozoic * *Drs. Peter Brown & Dina Spigelski * Leadership for the Ecozoic (L4E) is a McGill-based initiative dedicated to helping humanity, and the rest of life’s commonwealth escape the [well-known] failures of the Anthropocene to a more promising future. Thomas Berry envisaged the Ecozoic where human societies and the global community of life live in mutually enhancing relationships. We are a partnership of universities aimed at higher education reform with three primary goals: 1) to advance transdisciplinary scholarship to educate and empower new leaders; 2) to co-create a global research-to-action network; and 3) to build a global network of campuses that mobilize higher education resources to mitigate multi-faceted, human-induced, planetary declines in life support capacity. L4E courses, a rigorous PhD program, internships and field trips provide students with the background, tools and leadership skills to design and bring into being a flourishing of life on our planet. *Decolonial Epistemologies for Indigenous Territories of Life * *Dr. Colin Scott * Decolonial action in domains of conservation demand a further leap from interdisciplinarity to trans-epistemic dialogue and learning. Relational ontologies underwrite the knowledge, norms and institutional processes of Indigenous ‘territories of life,” as these are coming to be recognized in global discourse. The premise is that Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies are vital decolonial keys for nurturing biocultural diversity and socio-ecological integrity. In such a context, how do we shift pedagogy from visions of ‘universe’ and ‘university’ to ‘pluriverse’ and ‘pluriversity? *Community Conservation and Local Livelihoods: The Institutional Canopy of Conservation (I-CAN) Project and its Findings * *Dr. John Galaty * ** I-CAN is a partnership project involving universities in Canada (McGill, Carleton and Victoria) and East Africa (Nairobi in Kenya and Sokoine in Tanzania), the African Conservation Centre (ACC), and pastoral development and conservation NGO’s working in the eight regional sites where the project has carried out research over the last six years. It has involved faculty researchers, Ph.D students, MA students, and a research associate, Dr. Jacques Pollini. The major focus has been on investigating social and political factors involved in the governance of community-based conservation organizations, or Conservancies, and reconciliation between goals of resource conservation and local livelihoods, primarily of pastoral communities. The project has addressed issues in Kenya regarding the inclusion of conservation in common or group holdings (Olkiramatian), local ontologies of conservation (Olkiramatian), how conservation goals take account of the aspirations and economic pursuits of youth (Laikipia), economic dimensions of community-investor partnerships (Samburu), the governance role of women in Conservancies (Laikipia), and in Tanzania, tensions between villages, investors and government in conservation (Loliondo), community-government co-management of Wildlife Management Areas (Enduimet), and conflict over land use in a wildlife corridor (Tarangire). Dr. Pollini’s research complements that conducted by PhD and MA students by being comprehensive in scope, addressing all I-CAN research topics (livelihoods strategies, community conservation initiatives, conservation policies, institutional changes, land tenure changes, land and resources conflicts, governmentality and environmentality) in all I-CAN research sites in Kenya and Tanzania. ** ** ** *Attendance will take place via ZOOM * *https://mcgill.zoom.us/j/82939446723 * *_Meeting ID: 829 3944 6723 _* ** *Date:**Friday, October 23rd, 2020 **Time:**12:30-2:30 pm * *standd.anthro(a)mcgill.ca **www.mcgill.ca/standd* <http://www.mcgill.ca/standd>** Centre for Society, Technology, and Development (STandD) McGill University Peterson Hall To unsubscribe, send an email with the subject line "unsubscribe" to standd.anthro(a)mcgill.ca ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the CICADA_COLLABORATORS list, click the following link: https://lists.mcgill.ca/scripts/wa.exe?SUBED1=CICADA_COLLABORATORS&A=1

In Solidarity with the Indonesian Peoples Against the Omnibus Law
by Mon Sy 22 Oct '20

22 Oct '20

The UP CIDS Program on Alternative Development (UP CIDS AltDev) stands in solidarity with the Konfederasi Pergerakan Rakyat Indonesia (KPRI), the Serikat Petani Pasundan (SPP), and all the Indonesian peoples in their struggle against this repressive policy that is seen as a push among Indonesia’s oligarchs for their political and economic interest and that of corporations. Indonesian grassroots movements have organized a three-day national protest against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation that the Indonesian lawmakers abruptly passed without sufficient public consultation. Since the passage of this law on October 5, a series of demonstrations were held despite the rising COVID-19 cases in the country and government restriction on social gatherings. KPRI and SPP, which are grassroots regional partners of AltDev, led their respective constituents in this 3-day protest and in calling for support to expose the adverse implications of the Omnibus Law. 'Ted' Wheelwright Memorial Lecture<https://www.ppesydney.net/13th-annual-wheelwright-lecture-susan-ferguson-ja…> Hosted by the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney, together with the Journal of Australian Political Economy (JAPE) and the Political Economy Student Society (ECOPSoc) This Global Crisis: Capitalism In And Beyond The Pandemic Speakers: Susan Ferguson, Jayati Ghosh and Adam Tooze When: 9 November 2020, 12.30-2pm (Sydney time/AEDT) Where: Online via Zoom. Link will be sent prior to the event to registered attendees. All welcome. Register here<https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/this-global-crisis-capitalism-in-and-beyond…>. About 2020 has revealed the deep connections between our intersecting crises of economy, health, care, gender, race and climate. The course of the pandemic has been shaped by long-standing inequalities in our households, communities, workplaces and financial systems. Governments have responded with experimental fiscal and monetary policies that at least temporarily bypass the usual constraints while at the same time implementing new forms of repression at borders, elections and protests around the world. The Covid-19 crisis will drive political economic transformations that will reverberate around a world in which environmental risks are set to multiply. As the battle of ideas and blueprints for the post-pandemic world intensify, the Department of Political Economy's 13th annual Wheelwright lecture will be delivered by a panel of three global experts who will discuss the lessons of 2020 and what might come next. Associate Professor Susan Ferguson (Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada), Professor Jayati Ghosh (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India) and Professor Adam Tooze (Columbia University, USA) will provide sharp analysis of the dynamics of the crisis in social reproduction, the crisis in the global south and global macro-economic crisis. Panel Bios Susan Ferguson is Associate Professor Emerita at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada and Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey, US. She has been a longtime activist in socialist and social justice groups and has written extensively on Marxist Feminism and Social Reproduction. She co-edits the Pluto book series Mapping Social Reproduction and her book, Women and Work: Feminism, Labour and Social Reproduction was published in 2020 by Pluto Press. Susan now lives in Houston, Texas. Jayati Ghosh is a distinguished economist and was professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University until September 2020. She will be joining the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA in January 2021. Her research interests include globalisation, international finance, employment patterns in developing countries, macroeconomic policy and issues related to gender and development. Jayati has held positions at Tufts University and Cambridge and lectured at academic institutions across India. She is one of the founders of the Economic Research Foundation in New Delhi, a non-profit trust devoted to progressive economic research. She is also Executive Secretary of the International Development Economics Associates, a network of economists critical of the mainstream economic paradigm of neo-liberalism. Jayati has been a consultant and researcher for government and non-government organizations, internationally. She is widely published, with 18 books (most recently Demonetisation Decoded wth CP Chandrasekhar and Prabhat Patnaik, and the Elgar Handbook of Alternative Theories of Economic Development co-edited with Erik Reinert and Rainer Kattel) and nearly 200 scholarly articles. She writes regular columns on economics and current affairs for various national and international publications. Adam Tooze holds the Shelby Cullom Davis chair of History at Columbia University and serves as Director of the European Institute. In 2019, Foreign Policy Magazine named him one of the top Global Thinkers of the decade. Adam received his BA in Economics from King's College Cambridge and PhD from the London School of Economics. From 1996 to 2009 Adam taught at the University of Cambridge, where he was Reader in Modern History and Gurnee Hart fellow in History at Jesus College. After Cambridge, Adam was appointed to the Barton M. Biggs Professorship at Yale University before joining Columbia's history department in the summer of 2015. Adam is a regular commentator and has appeared on PBS Television, BBC Radio, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, the History Channel, Swiss and French television. He is the author of a number of award-winning books, including Statistics and the German State: the Making of Modern Economic Knowledge (2001), Wages of Destruction: the Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy (2006), Deluge: The Great War and the Remaking of the Global Order 1916-1931 (2014), and, most recently, Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World (2018). Reading list around regenerative futures for Young Adults?
by Pallavi Varma Patil 11 Oct '20

11 Oct '20

Dear all, What fiction / non fiction books or writings would you recommend for young adults to introduce to them the idea of ecological/ solidarity based futures ? Sujit and I have the following ideas but am sure you all have many more and it would be nice to compile a reading list together for children/ young adults. Ours are as follows: 1. 'Year of the Weeds' by Siddhartha Sarma (Very clever and imaginative writing for young adults fictionalising the famous indigenous Niyamgiri struggle against mining ) 2. Daniel Greenberg's 'Free at Last ' about the Sudbury Valley School 3. Entropia: Life Beyond Industrial Civilisation by Samuel Alexander 4. Our own Gandhi Note book to introduce Gandhi to young readers 5. Ela Bhatt's Anubandh and "We are poor but so many". 6. The following chapters in Alternative futures: Ch 35, Looking Back into the Future: India, South Asia, and the world in 2010 ( pp 627-645), and Ch 18: Dare to dream ( pp 326- 340) What else and what more would you recommend to us that can be used as a reading list for Young Adults? Many thanks in advance! Pallavi https://naitaleem.wordpress.com/
