Fwd: [Ecoversities Virtual Planetary Gathering] Schedule & details
by Alessandra Pomarico 03 Dec '20

03 Dec '20

dearest friends it's with great pleasure that we forward you the invitation to our Ecoversties Planetarian Gathering, a very busy long weekend to reconnect and reflect about our autonomous learning spaces! The various offerings in the parallel sessions are truly amazing. In a few places you will find traces of our work in and with this large collective, as in the presentation of (still working in progress) Firefly Radio, Meduse (Mediterranean Ecofeminist Decolonial Union for self Education), and in the Film and Podcasts Publication Festival. We point this out to you just because it may be hard to orient yourself in such a generously crowded schedule and in these appointments we are sure you will reconnect also with common friends. The *OASIS* in the central part of the schedule are the time where we all regroup either in *ceremony* (Friday, day 1, to reconnect among us and all relations), in *assembly* (Saturday, day 2 to heal , share and discuss) and in a *dreaming quest* (Sunday day 3, to envision together how to move forward in the alliance) Obviously we encourage you to follow as much as possible, good luck with the joy of missing out! looking forward to see some of you, and forgive crossposting alessandra [image: Header virtual gathering.png] Dear friends, This is an invitation for you to gather together with other higher education rebels, dreamers and visionaries from around the world for our Fifth Planetarian Gathering of the Ecoversities Alliance to Re-imagining Higher Education and Learning- happening online on December 4th, 5th and 6th 2020. We have designed this year’s Global Gathering as a digital learning journey to stay connected, support each other in a difficult time, and keep working together. During these 3 days you can participate in the multiple parallel ‘open space’ sessions hosted by Ecoversities Alliance’s members offering a variety of proposals and approaches, in different languages and across time zones.. Each day we will also reunite at the ‘oasis session’ – a space for grounding together as a full circle, a space-time for ceremonies, an assembly to reflect together on how to move forward and share updates, and a final envisioning session, to dream our own dreams. As we have experienced in these years, there is an emerging constellation of eco-versities — people and communities reclaiming their local knowledge systems and learning practices to restore and re-envision processes that are meaningful and relevant to the call of our times. Our primary focus in the Alliance and in this virtual gathering is to bring together people who are deeply involved with ‘alternatives’ to higher education — working within, against, and beyond the modern university — as well as in locally-rooted learning spaces that are regenerating community, cultivating new stories and possibilities, and diverse ecological, social, economic, and cultural ecosystems. We truly hope you will join and be part of us, The Ecoversity Alliance Helpful links for the gathering: - Details about the schedule: - This spreadsheet contains detailed information about the schedule of the sessions in different timezones, and ZOOM links 👉 *https://bit.ly/ <https://bit.ly/36ycLeS>Ecoversities * - The schedule is also uploaded on our website 👉 *https://ecoversities.org/news-events/ <https://ecoversities.org/news-events/> * - Register to be in the participants list and be informed 👉 https://bit.ly/3kXUXNZ

Open Discussion and Updates (December 2020)
by Brandon Liu 03 Dec '20

03 Dec '20

Dear all, Apologies for the absence of the monthly discussion thread in the last few months! I got quite caught up in work for the US elections. Welcome to the many new members who have joined in the last couple months. If you haven't already done so, please feel free to introduce yourself to the wider group! What is your background, your work, and what brings you to PeDAGoG? This network functions best when its members connect with each other, and that means asking questions, initiating discussions, and sharing ideas. At the beginning of each month, I send out an email for "open discussion and updates" to invite everyone to share something with the group. You can reply directly here or start a new thread. Anything and everything relating to post-development and pedagogy is most welcome: learning experiences, teaching materials, tools, perspectives, etc. - What's something interesting you learned this month? - What's an exciting professional update you'd like to share with this group? - What's something that's been on your mind this month that's germane to PeDAGoG? - What's something you'd like to get feedback on from the PeDAGoG community? As always, our humble shared doc is available for everyone to use to (1) learn about others in the PeDAGoG network and (2) to share information and materials with others. You can find it here: https://pad.globaltapestryofalternatives.org/pedagog Best, Brandon

Arturo Escobar & Winona LaDuke: Latin American and Indigenous perspectives on degrowth
by Paulson,Susan 02 Dec '20

02 Dec '20

The Case for Degrowth with Latin American and Indigenous Perspectives Monday 7 December 2020 11am – 12:30pm EST Live online: www.youtube.com/user/UFLatinAmerica<http://www.youtube.com/user/UFLatinAmerica> Please join the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida to explore radical moves toward more resilient and equitable worlds advanced in the book The Case for Degrowth<https://www.wiley.com/en-us/The+Case+for+Degrowth-p-9781509535620> by Giorgos Kallis, Susan Paulson, Giacomo D’Alisa, and Federico Demaria. In the face of mounting environmental degradation and uneven sacrifices demanded by expanding economies, authors and commentators from three continents make a case for abandoning the struggle to sustain relentless growth. In dialogue with Latin American and Indigenous perspectives and proposals, we consider degrowth, a network of movements striving to forge healthier futures by slowing down global use of material and energy, and by reorienting institutions, politics, and worldviews around care and equitable wellbeing. Commentators Winona LaDuke, Anishinaabe environmentalist, economist, and industrial hemp grower, is a renowned leader in tribal land claims and preservation, indigenous and human rights, local foods, and sustainable rural economies. Living on her ancestral territory, Ojibwe White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, LaDuke is executive director and co-founder (along with the Indigo Girls) of Honor the Earth, a national advocacy group that educates and creates public support for native environmental groups, playing an active role in the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. In 1996 and 2000 LaDuke was candidate for US Vice President, joining Ralph Nader on the Green Party ticket. Books include: To Be A Water Protector, All Our Relations: Native Struggles for Land and Life, Last Standing Woman, Recovering the Sacred: the Power of Naming and Claiming, The Militarization of Indian Country, The Sugar Bush, The Winona LaDuke Reader: A Collection of Essential Writings. Co-authored books: Grassroots: A Field Guide for Feminist Activism; Sister Nations: Native American Women Writers on Community; Struggle for the Land: Native North American Resistance to Genocide, Ecocide, and Colonization; Ojibwe Waasa Inaabidaa: We Look in All Directions; New Perspectives on Environmental Justice: Gender, Sexuality, and Activism; Earth Meets Spirit: A Photographic Journey Through the Sacred Landscape. Arturo Escobar, activist-researcher from Cali, Colombia, works on territorial struggles against extractivism; postdevelopmentalist, post-capitalist and non-patriarchal/non-racist transitions. Emeritus professor of anthropology and political ecology at University of North Carolina, Escobar is affiliated with the PhD Program in Design and Creation, Universidad de Caldas, Manizales, Colombia, and the PhD Program in Environmental Sciences, Universidad del Valle, Cali. Over the past twenty-five years, he has worked closely with Afro-Colombian, environmental and feminist organizations on these issues. Books include: Pluriversal Politics: The Real and the Possible; Designs for the Pluriverse: Radical Interdependence, Autonomy, and the Making of Worlds; Territorios de diferencia. Lugar, movimientos, vida, redes; Sentipensar con la tierra; Women and the Politics of Place; Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World. Co-edited books: Cultures of Politics/Politics of Cultures: Revisioning Latin American Social Movements; Women and the Politics of Place; The World Social Forum: Challenging Empires; The Making of Social Movements in Latin America: Identity, Strategy, and Democracy. Escobar writes: "Latin America and the Caribbean urgently need degrowth of many activities portrayed as ‘development,’ especially those that rely on large-scale extractive operations that, besides wounding and abusing the Earth, create inequality and untold suffering. If ‘growth’ is needed at all, it is in those activities that bring genuine wellbeing to all living beings --humans and the Earth. That's called ‘buen vivir,’ and it is a far cry from the ideology of endless growth." REVIEWS of The Case for Degrowth (2020) “COVID-19 is the symptom; the profit-driven destruction of natural and social habitats is the disease. There's only one cure consistent with global social justice. Read this eloquent and urgent book and find out what it is.” Mike Davis, University of California and author of Ecology of Fear and Planet of Slums “Degrowth is one of the most important ideas of the 21st century. Here it is in compact form. Clear, timely, urgent. Don't miss this book.” Jason Hickel, London School of Economics and author of The Divide and Less is More “This is a major contribution to the current debate on growth and degrowth. The authors lay bare the innards of each and show us the importance of degrowth. Wellbeing, equity, and sustainability are key vectors organizing this text. These should be understood in the fullness of their capacities to move us out of our current modernity --a decaying order that is today still dominant. But history has shown us across the centuries that no system of power can last for ever, and nor will our current system. Indeed, it is busy destroying itself.” Saskia Sassen, Columbia University and author of Expulsions “The COVID pandemic is laying bare dysfunctions of the growth model and the urgency of a pathway to sanity, climate protection, and security for all. This wonderful and accessible introduction by leading degrowth scholars is a vital resource for anyone interested in viable alternatives, rooted in cooperative economic relations and respect for planetary limits.” Juliet Schor, author of After the Gig: how the sharing economy got hijacked and how to win it back “Decrecer es la consigna. Alberto Acosta, former president of the Constituent Assembly of Ecuador and author of Buen Vivir “A superb account of why capitalist economies fail life on Earth, even as peoples’ initiatives in community sharing already revive joy and hope for our futures. This small book teaches economics like no other. It will reply to your doubts about change. It should be on every public library shelf and every syllabus; give copies to your friends.” Ariel Salleh, activist and editor of Eco-Sufficiency and Global Justice: Women write Political Ecology “As the panoply of growth-induced disasters becomes ever more evident with the COVID-19 crisis, it becomes patently clear that the growth imperative must come to a stop. A new vision of the economy –and, hence, of economics—is absolutely essential to the welfare of Earth and all its beings. With The Case for Degrowth, Kallis, Paulson, D’Alisa and Demaria give us a decisive chapter towards such reframing. They show that degrowth is about much more than just the economy: it’s about a radically different way of being, doing and world-making. Degrowth enlightens us on the design of wiser societies that go at a slower pace precisely because they are attuned to Earth. By incorporating the paradigms of care, mutual aid, commoning, and justice, this stunning short book by the foremost thinkers of degrowth finally makes tangible a radical transition towards the peaceful and mutually-enhancing co-existence of humans and the Earth.” Arturo Escobar, author of Encountering Development, and Designs for the Pluriverse and Professor of Anthropology at University of North Carolina “The case for degrowth as argued in this book is so well rounded and compelling that it is difficult to imagine how progressive politicians could avoid integrating the many policies advocated here into their party manifestos . . . unless of course they cannot escape the growth mentality that has suffocated progressive policies for decades. But even in this case, the book offers ways of changing that mentality through commoning and collective action.” Massimo De Angelis, University of East London, editor of The Commoner, and author of Omnia Sunt Communia “The degrowth movement now has its Manifesto. A rigorous, practical analysis that will guide grassroots and institutional politics so they can realize a transformation akin to degrowth and turn the current global crisis into a new opportunity and pathway towards more sustainable and carrying societies.” Isabelle Anguelovski, Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability (BCNUEJ) and author of Neighborhood as Refuge “Degrowth is one of the most exciting approaches to emerge from the belly of the industrialised and colonising world, fundamentally challenging its unsustainable and inequitable path of 'development'. But approaches and concepts also need praxis, else they remain in rarified ivory towers. Perhaps for the first time, here, degrowth proponents transform visions and recommendations into a coherent set of actions, from our individual choices to macro-economics and politics. Essential reading for anyone interested in transforming society to be crisis-resilient and crisis-avoiding!” Ashish Kothari, Kalpavriksh/Global Tapestry of Alternatives and co-editor of Pluriverse: A Post-Development Dictionary "Is there life after economic growth? Kallis and his co-authors have taken up the baton from the early proponents of degrowth and created a vibrant, accessible discourse for the 21st Century. The Case for Degrowth provides the why, the where and the how of a better economy and a richer society. Its vision is needed now more than ever." Tim Jackson, Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity, author of Prosperity without Growth

A new article on the Radical Ecological Democracy website - " An economy that works for everyone"
by Pallav Das 01 Dec '20

01 Dec '20

Friends, A new article, "An economy that works for everyone" has been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website. In this final part of the series on the “Shared Society”, Clem McCartney examines how the economy could be made to respond constructively to poverty, alienation and anomie affecting the world, and how people can proactively impact the process by which the economy is managed for the benefit of the majority, and ensure the survival of the planet rather than its annihilation. https://www.radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/an-economy-that-works-for-everyo… Please take a look and share your response. "If climate change does lead to the catastrophic outcomes that some scientists now openly contemplate, then these Neoclassical economists will be complicit in causing the greatest crisis, not merely in the history of capitalism, but potentially in the history of life on Earth." PUBLICATION: ORGANISING IN DEFENCE OF LIFE: THE EMERGENCE AND DYNAMICS OF A TERRITORIAL MOVEMENT IN SOUTHERN CHILE By Maria Ehrnström-Fuentes (Published on the Journal Organization) [cid:[email protected]]The aim of this paper is to examine how territorial movements, as distinct forms of place-based social movements, organise in defence of life against the threat of resource extraction on their land. Based on the experiences of Indigenous Lafkenche-Mapuche members of a protracted struggle against a pulp mill in southern Chile, the study seeks to address the following research questions: (1) How do territorial movements emerge and organise the defence of their threatened lives? and (2) How do diverging (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) territorial relations shape the dynamics of the struggle? Combining insights from Enrique Dussel’s ‘ethics of liberation’ with that of Indigenous ontologies, this study suggests that territorial movements emerge out of the awakening of a critical consciousness of the threat of death and the collective ‘desire to live’ that define the dynamics of the struggle. The findings demonstrate how the diverging territorial relations, the societally embedded ‘coloniality of power’, and the state and corporate induced violence shape the movement dynamics. Changes in the movement dynamics also occur as a result of the struggle itself, as the movement actors’ unified desire to live continuously transforms the people and shapes the territory they inhabit. The following presentation is an epistemological-political action from the world of possibilities in the pluriverse of indigenous knowledge. The Alli Kawsay (Buen Vivir) and its political, cultural, and epistemic options offer the possibility to work collectively in favor of our ‘Mother Nature.’ From the urgent options to be heard in the current climate crisis and even more in the sociopolitical crisis, it is essential to strengthen respect for Mother Nature. This document arises from learning in indigenous communities in walking and listening to indigenous talk in the Andean region in high Andean and Amazonian communities. Presented here are elements of the rights of nature. The Alli Kawsay is an option to be lived urgently now, as a serious and fundamental option that originates from ancestral knowledge, is lived by millions in the global south, and that today is taken up again at the global level by activists and people aware of the care of nature as a subject of rights in the international political framework. Announcing a new Column at AgroecoloyNow! - “Agroecology in Motion: Nourishing Transformation” We have launched a new column at AgroecologyNow!. Our aim is to create a platform for bold ideas relayed through succinct, creative and compelling writing that stretches the boundaries of thinking and action to nourish a transformative agroecology. It will include articles that stimulate reflection and learning, inform political-practical work on agroecology and move people to action. The column will be provocative and inspiring, international in scope and connected with agroecology happenings all over the world. The first article in the column lays the groundwork for future contributions: https://wp.me/p67WNH-GF<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp…> Seeking New Agreements for Working with Nature through Enhancing Agricultural Biodiversity In this inaugural piece in our new column, Agroecology in Motion, Patrick Mulvany, calls for the radical foregrounding of a transformative understanding of agricultural biodiversity. This approach could herald new ways of agreeing how we should work with nature, led by peasants, Indigenous Peoples and other food producers as the everyday experts, stewards and champions of agricultural biodiversity. This call to action will help tune activists, researchers, policy-makers and other actors into the need to democratise and transform the governance of agricultural biodiversity. https://wp.me/p67WNH-FG<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp…>. * Join us at the Oxford Real Farming Conference 2021 This year the ORFC is going online and global with a 7-day programme (7-13 Jan) of talks and workshops from across the world. The event will give food and farming activists, including producers, researchers, policy-makers and NGOs the chance to exchange ideas, learn from each other and form new alliances. It will also provide space to organise ahead of the climate ministers and heads of state gathering, COP26, which the UK is hosting in Glasgow in November 2021. AgroecologyNow and CAWR will be a part of 6+ presentations, workshops and interactive sessions on: * Agroecology Financing: From Tweaking to Transformation …! * Exporting Technofixes, Colonialism and Resistance * Can agriculture be decolonised? Opportunities and obstacles for agroecology * Building farmers capacity in the context of urbanisation: political pedagogies for urban agroecology * Subtle Agroecologies: Farming with the Hidden Half of Nature * In the Belly of the Beast; Organising for Food Sovereignty in the US Registration for delegates from majority world countries will be free. Our growing stream of research at AgroecologyNow on Financing and Resourcing Agroecology is critically examining the role of public and philanthropic donors in agroecology transitions. We are looking at both the quantity (and often the lack) of funds allocated to agroecology. We are also especially concerned with the quality of financing approaches and specifically how they can support a transformative agroecology. Also, this page<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agroe…> lists the growing number of studies that explicitly study the extent to which agroecology is being financed through differentagricultural development and research programs. Visit the website to sign up for two webinars on this stream of research (one on November 26<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agroe…> and another in January as a part of ORFC as mentioned above). This article discusses the surge in interest in ‘local food’ in the wake of COVID. It argues that social movements are doing critical work in coordinating and amplifying the political dimensions of local food by shifting from individual to collective, exclusive to inclusive, and technical to political to confront corporate power and other intersecting oppressions. Join the Great Degrowth Debate Monday 16 Nov 1pm EST/19hrs CET

21 Nov '20

Join a live debate with authors and editors of major Degrowth works published in 2020. Sign in Monday 16 November at 1pm EST/ 1900hrs CET: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RJsW3pspCE Three books in dialogue: Giorgos Kallis, Susan Paulson, Giacomo D'Alisa, Federico Demaria, 2020. The Case for Degrowth. Polity Press, 140 pages: https://www.wiley.com/en-gb/The+Case+...<https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqa0p1ZTJQZUpDRmhHaW02Zl…> "The relentless pursuit of economic growth is the defining characteristic of contemporary societies. Yet it benefits few and demands monstrous social and ecological sacrifice. Is there a viable alternative? How can we halt the endless quest to grow global production and consumption and instead secure socio-ecological conditions that support lives worth living for all? In this compelling book, leading experts Giorgos Kallis, Susan Paulson, Giacomo D'Alisa and Federico Demaria make the case for degrowth - living well with less, by living differently, prioritizing wellbeing, equity and sustainability. Drawing on emerging initiatives and enduring traditions around the world, they advance a radical degrowth vision and outline policies to shape work and care, income and investment that avoid exploitative and unsustainable practices. Degrowth, they argue, can be achieved through transformative strategies that allow societies to slow down by design, not disaster. Essential reading for all concerned citizens, policy-makers, and students, this book will be an important contribution to one of the thorniest and most pressing debates of our era." This debate is for anyone interested in the latest ideas and developments within the Degrowth movement, and those who are completely new to it. There will be a chance for you to get involved with other viewers in the YouTube chat, as well as ask questions to the authors. Corinna Burkhart, Matthias Schmelzer, Nina Treu (eds.) 2020. Degrowth in Movement(s): A dictionary of social movements and alternatives for a future beyond economic growth, capitalism, and domination. Zero Books, 360 pages: https://www.johnhuntpublishing.com/ze...<https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqbi11MkNfTEl2M3VBenNVdk…> "Degrowth is an emerging social movement that overlaps with proposals for systemic change such as anti-globalization and climate justice, commons and transition towns, basic income and Buen Vivir. Degrowth in Movement(s) reflects on the current situation of social movements aiming at overcoming capitalism, industrialism and domination. The essays ask: What is the key idea of the respective movement? Who is active? What is the relation with the degrowth movement? What can the degrowth movement learn from these other movements and the other way around? Which common proposals, but also which contradictions, oppositions and tensions exist? And what alliances could be possible for broader systemic transformations?" Vincent Liegey, Anitra Nelson, 2020. Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide. Pluto Press, 224 pages: https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745342...<https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=QUFFLUhqbHd0QW5XQ19wRFN5X0Jwbk…> "A sense of urgency pervades global environmentalism, and the degrowth movement is bursting into the mainstream. As climate catastrophe looms closer, people are eager to learn what degrowth is about, and whether we can save the planet by changing how we live. This book is an introduction to the movement. As politicians and corporations obsess over growth objectives, the degrowth movement demands that we must slow down the economy by transforming our economies, our politics and our cultures to live within the Earth's limits. This book navigates the practice and strategies of the movement, looking at its strengths and weaknesses. Covering horizontal democracy, local economies and the reduction of work, it shows us why degrowth is a compelling and realistic project." Panelists have been challenged to create a Limerick, and we invite the audience to put on their artistic hats and write their own degrowth-related limericks, which can be shared in the chat during the debate or via private message/tagging us on social media. The viewers can then vote for their favourite Limerick, and the "Audience favourite" will be announced at the end of the debate! Be Our Digital Spect-actor
by Shubham Ojha 21 Nov '20

21 Nov '20

Hello, We are a collective of artists called Rang Karwan, who believe in theatre as a tool for social change. Inspired by the interactive elements of Forum Theatre we have filmed a short scene Unmuted that traces the story of a girl working from home, encountering online harassment. Our work so far has been appreciated and acknowledged by *India Foundation for the Arts* through their 25 x 25 Initiative and we are ready to involve a wider audience. We are looking to identify organizations who work with women in the workplace, gender sensitization and education, violence against women, cybercrime, harassment or their intersectionalities to be our participatory audience or ‘spect-actors’. If you are not affiliated with any of these organizations but identify as women and want to help us in our initiative we would love to have you on board. As our ‘spect-actors’ you will view video scenes of our story and participate in an anonymous survey that would help script the succeeding scenes.Your participation in this journey will help us build a repository of possible action steps and questions that women can consider the next time they encounter such harassment. If you would like to sign up or know more, do fill in this form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeqvzwpExMiQDY4SRk-bY7b96LLK8q-D2p…>by Friday November 28th. https://forms.gle/hnr4ZKu1vZBuE3KCA Love and regards, Shubham Rang Karwan Follow us on Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/Rang-Karwan-100475151586174> | Instagram <https://www.instagram.com/rangkarwan/> https://www.rangkarwan.org/ [image: WhatsApp Image 2020-11-04 at 15.41.39.jpeg]
