A new article on the Radical Ecological Democracy website - "Indian farmers prevail: A conversation with Kavitha Kuruganti, a farmers’ rights activist"
by Pallav Das 27 Dec '21

27 Dec '21

Friends, A new article, "Indian farmers prevail: A conversation with Kavitha Kuruganti, a farmers’ rights activist" has been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website. https://www.radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/indian-farmers-prevail-a-convers… No mass movement in India's recent history has captured the imagination of the country the way the just concluded farmers' movement did over the last one year period. After a protracted struggle the farmers were able to force the Indian government to withdraw three farm laws, which were aimed at corporatizing the country's agriculture. In a wide ranging conversation with Kavitha Kuruganti, an Indian farmers' rights activist, I discuss the implications of this victory for the Indian farmers, and how a sustainable and people-focused agricultural alternative could be constructed in the future. Please share the article with your networks and join the discussion on RED listserv or the website discussion forum. Kavitha Kuruganti is copied here in case you would like to contact her directly. Best, Pallav Das

Dear PeDAGoG colleagues, Hope you're all doing well! We will be hosting the next online discussion of the PeGAGoG group on 16th Dec 2021 at 2 PM GMT. The broad agenda of the discussion is as follows: 1. Check-ins 2. Update by the working groups - including follow up actions/support required by the groups 3. Plans for the upcoming year - including a discussion on how to make the group more active Here's the link for the meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2598651679 This will be a follow-up on the meeting held in June this year. You can access the key points from the previous meeting here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X4p8-Lf6CDDIxyzs8Jc5xx6mb3fB3bSDYsYPbZm… Lastly, it would be nice if the different working groups formed in the previous meet could provide a short report of their progress to the larger group before the meeting (particularly the working groups on research possibilities and inward-facing events), though we will explore this further during the meeting itself. Looking forward to seeing you all there! Best, Upamanyu

At this Pre-Forum, we will examine and discuss some experiences from China, Japan and Thailand, and to prepare for a PP21 Forum some time in Spring 2022 to cover experiences from various regions in Asia. All friends from Asia and all corners of the world are welcome to present experiences and/or to join the zoom meeting, for free. It will be in English, but if voluntary interpreters can offer help, there can be other languages. Attached are some documentation for discussion on Dec 15. Organizer: PP21 Organizing Committee Co-Organizers: CCRD-CS, Lingnan University Global University for Sustainability ACFOD ARENA PPSG Objective: to reconnect with PP21 partners over the years, invite the younger generation to participate in writing or helping to write the experience of communities, share reviews and prospects for alternatives, and start the regeneration of PP21 process in building an Alliance of Hope. The forum will encourage partners to be involved in the “Asia Mobilizing for Mexico 2022 WSF” (Jan 19-21, 2022 meetings are being convened), the WSF in Mexico scheduled for May 2022, the 9th South South Forum on Sustainability (July-Aug 2022), etc. Further PP21 forums can also be planned. Title of Pre-Forum: Rural and Indigenous Community Building in Asia Format: Brief papers in English (or translated into English from the local languages) of around 1000-2000 words on each “case study” to be circulated to the PP21 network and posted on PP21 website. Based on the papers, there will be presentations of 5 minutes followed by discussion of 5 minutes of each case study on Dec 15, then comparative or general discussions. Contents: The study can be a review of the history of rural reconstruction, indigenous practices, community response to climate change, pandemic or livelihood issues, or highlights of positive/negative experiences from which lessons can be learnt. Some examples are: review of the Assembly of the Poor in Thailand, farmer convergences in Japan since 1989, rural reconstruction movement in Nepal or China, current state of farmer struggles in India, sustainability or self-reliance practices in communities, the use of indigenous herbs during the pandemic… Languages: the webinar provides the facilities but it is up to participants to arrange for interpreters between English and a local language (for example, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Bahasa, Tagalog, Hindi, Malayalam…). Re: [PeDAGoG] HAPPENING TODAy: COP26 Report back and Ways Forward | Dec.3 12pm UK / 8pm Manila / 1pm Nigeria / 9am Brazil

SAVE THE DATE! *3 December 2021 12pm UK | 8pm Manila |1pm Nigeria | 9am Brazil To register: bit.ly/COP26ReportBack <http://bit.ly/COP26ReportBack> COP26: Report back and Ways Forward * The Southern Peoples’ Action on COP26 with the International League of People's Struggle is organizing a report-back session featuring its convening and allied organizations who have participated in the ground and online battlegrounds of COP26 at Glasgow and beyond*.* As the dust has settled after the conclusion of the COP26 climate talks, the global public now has a clearer picture of the outcomes of the Glasgow Climate Pact, which has been universally acknowledged as a ‘compromise deal’ that tries to keep the hope of a 1.5C warming limit alive but is faced with enormous challenges: - NDC pledges for greenhouse gas emissions are expected to lead to a 2.4C global warming trajectory <https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/climate-loss-damage-earns-recognition-…> . - Announced climate finance adaptation finance only amounted to $960 million <https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/climate-loss-damage-earns-recognition-…> to $1.22 billion. Monitored voluntary pledges around nature, including zero deforestation <https://opinion.inquirer.net/146091/saving-whatsleft-of-our-forests>, nature protection <https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/cop26-talks-45-nations-pledge-protect-…>, and agriculture <https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1158989>, amount to around $27 billion. - These are a far cry from the original commitment to raise $100 billion/year, which is expected to rise to $300 billion/year by 2030. Only $80 billion in total was raised <https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/what-does-cop26-mean-adaptation> since the Paris Agreement was promulgated in 2015. - Banks and international finance institutions pledge $130 trillion in climate finance <https://www.rappler.com/world/global-affairs/finance-day-pledges-cop26-nove…>, but raise fears of conditionalities and resource traps. - The Glasgow Loss and Damage Facility was established but with no concrete commitments for funding <https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/climate-loss-damage-earns-recognition-…> . - Human rights language, expected to strengthen hard accountability, was shot down in the final text of the Glasgow Climate Pact <https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/rights-groups-warn-paris-pact-rules-ca…> . Join us and other leading voices in the global climate justice movements in taking stock of COP26 outcomes and how they measure up to peoples' demands for climate justice!
