Annual Calendar for Webinars amongst PeDAGoG members
by Pallavi Varma Patil 08 Mar '22

08 Mar '22

Deal All: Thank you very much for filling up the profile pages. The Member page sheet looks fantastic. 110 members and diverse and incredible work that gives such a hopeful glimpse of counter currents in Education and Activism worldwide! As discussed in the previous meetings, we are hoping to organize a few online seminars in which group members volunteer to present their work. The work can be related to a *course, a pedagogical method, a research project (ongoing or one that is being conceptualized), or a working research paper.* The goal is to kickstart some activity from which all of us can learn. Our working group member, Mohan, has cleverly created a new sheet called 'Seminar_signup' in the same PeDAGoG member list link. It helps to not only see the webinars in one go but also cross check the profile of the speakers. And so in that new sheet you can choose a time slot for any month of 2022, beginning April. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sY1zrrRvYYh0l-6qCmRjQJwKun4BJMOH7jR… Sujit and I, for example , are offering the first such webinar on our Living Utopias Initiative on April 1st,2022. (An easy to remember date!;) Friends from another network called The EDUCERE Alliance ( https://www.educerealliance.org/) will also join in for this webinar. We will soon be sending a poster out with the webinar link with the help of Ashish's team and Upamanyu. There can be one more slot in April too if there is readiness to present. Otherwise we can offer a monthly webinar series. The other working group member, Irene, stressed on the importance of having an annual calendar upfront of PeDaGoG webinars/events amongst us and announcing the events early. As this will help us all block our calendars in advance. Our request is to (as much as possible) choose the time that works for most time zones. We are hoping to have anywhere between 4 and 6 seminars a year, to begin with. We look forward to your support. Please write to us if you have any questions/suggestions. FW: [stopdesignerbabies-announce] WEDNESDAY: Why Your Movement Should Oppose Designer Babies - a mini-conference
by Christian Stalberg 07 Mar '22

07 Mar '22

Why Your Movement Should Oppose Designer Babies - a mini-conference March 9, 2022, 5-8 PM GMT online. Register here <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-your-movement-should-oppose-designer-bab…> With Vandana Shiva, Donna Dickenson, Tina Stevens, Claire Robinson, Sarah Boone, Pete Shanks, Bob Phelps and others. Organised by Stop Designer Babies <https://stopdesignerbabies.org/> , Gen-ethisches Netzwerk <https://www.gen-ethisches-netzwerk.de/> (Germany), Alliance for Humane Biotechnology <http://www.humanebiotech.org/> (USA), GeneEthics <http://geneethics.org/> (Australia). International scientists’ groups are pushing for the creation of genetically modified (GM) designer babies, and in 2023 there will probably be an attempt to legalise them in the UK <https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/clampdown-on-useless-ivf-extras-2xdtglq60> . Although it’s clear that allowing GM babies would have harmful effects on human rights and basic human equality, some social movements have not yet taken up this issue. Our panel of speakers from feminist, anti-racist, disability rights, working class, and green movements will explain why all these movements must oppose designer babies. This will be followed by a panel of international speakers that will explain why over 70 countries already ban GM babies. Only a global ban on the creation of cloned or GM designer babies will ensure that minorities and global society in general is protected from human genetic engineering. Schedule of mini-conference 5 - 5.30pm Introduction to basic technology and biology of GM babies 5.30 Break 5.35 - 6.45 Panel of feminist, anti-racist, disability rights, working class and environmental activists 6.45 Break 6.50 – 8.00 International panel on the need for a global ban Register here <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-your-movement-should-oppose-designer-bab…> For more information, or to be kept informed about SDB events, contact <mailto:[email protected]> info(a)stopdesignerbabies.org. Fwd: WAR BY OTHER NAMES / Act 2
by Alessandra Pomarico 06 Mar '22

06 Mar '22

dear friends and comrades, sorry for the last minute forwarding... lots of organizings on different levels... .. please, if you are interested in following these conversations (they will be happening every Sunday with different invited guests) , feel free to subscribe the mailing list writing to : <assembling(a)16beavergroup.org> or to <mai(a)16beavergroup.org> ---------- Dear Friends, Comrades, We started this process of assembling together virtually nearly 2 years ago. We never could have imagined then, that this process could become such a rich communal infrastructure for sharing our urgent questions and tending to them together. Thanks to each of you for nourishing and creating this space of trust and generosity. It is in this spirit that we would like to invite you this Sunday March 6, 12pm for the second act of War By Other Names. Together with Olga Kopenkina and Dmitry Vilensky, we have imagined this summit-in-acts as an attempt to create a space to think together and consider potential actions responding to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. This week is Dmitry's turn to introduce the day. Rather than write a text, he thought to share a question and potential heading to begin our conversation: Learning to Resist in Times of Wars Irina Zherebkina from Kharkiv, Yevgenia Belorusets and Mikola Rydny from Kyiv are among those invited who have said they would like to join. Below you will find login details and the short introduction for Sunday and the summit. _____________________________________ SUNDAY'S SUMMIT Please Note: Start time is 12pm Unique Login and Password Sunday March 6th, 2022 12:00 PM (EST) https://zoom.us/join Meeting ID: 934 0924 8883 Passcode: Exter __________________________________ INVITATION This Sunday, March 6th, we would like to invite you to the second encounter and share with you Dmitry Vilensky's question: Learning to resist in times of wars __________________________________ INTRODUCTION TO WAR BY OTHER NAMES Since 2020, we have been testing assembling drawing on friendships old and new from all the various parts of our shared planet, considering the current conjuncture. We felt then, in the urgencies of 'lockdown' and imposed 'social distancing' to find new ways of recomposing the cartographies of struggle in the face of what could only be another crisis through which states and capital would opportunistically manipulate toward their advantage. Our thesis has been confirmed time and again as states, especially those bearing the imprint of supremacist mandates, imperial or colonial histories, have used in the most wretched manner the pandemic and its conditions of distraction to further their capacities to exert and extend their will to govern and control. A global war has been pronounced against a virus. And in the middle of that war many other wars have and are taking place. Wars against indigenous communities, migrant peoples, displaced, houseless peoples, wars of dispossession, wars of occupation, of omission, sometimes as if by accident, organized neglect, in the name of safety, security, law, of restoring territorial integrity or restoring old empires. But these wars are like palimpsests, taking the same writ, the same sheets of proclamation and rewriting over them new conditions, new rules, new impositions, and new justifications. Amidst the seas of war are floating peoples, communities, multitudes who struggle to find a side, a way, a path toward autonomy, subsistence, if not bare survival. The current invasion by Russia of Ukraine is a moment of intensification in an ongoing war, which inherits the legacies of a cold war and the hot wars which preceded it, always risking to spill into surrounding territories and justifying new forms of weaponry for forced forms of pacification. These wars certainly have their locality and specificity but they cannot be read outside also the larger forces at play. But understanding these forces also does not necessarily arrive to understanding how they implicate each of us wherever we are. As we have asked implicity or explicity in our many assemblies, the Conference of Butterflies, a Conference in Shards, as well as our vigil, Fukushima at 10, how to reimagine solidarity today? Over the course of these following weeks, we will try to enter collectively a process of thinking together the various forces at play, the questions this invasion by Russia raises, the various modes of discourse and practice it may call into being in order to struggle against the supremacist, imperial, colonial, fascist, racist, patriarchal, capitalist forces which continue to invent and direct new causes of war and war by other names. __________________________________ NOTE ON ORGANIZATION As a form of organizing this summit, we will try to share responsibility with friends. We began this process leading to this first encounter with a letter from Dmitry Vilensky of Chto Delat on February 6th asking how we may organize something together in response to a potentially devastating war. Given Belarus's implication in this, we asked our friend Olga Kopenkina to join us in situating occasions and inviting friends from Ukraine, Belarus, and beyond to think and share questions. Whatever we have planned or written has seemed to be inadequate by the day as the situation has deteriorated from a potential war or attack to a full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the level of organization, we would like each encounter to have its own approach to thinking and finding a way to discuss what is taking place in a manner that can go beyond news and toward nourishing our ways to conjoin struggles wherever we are situated. __________________________________ Please note, for those who have expressed interest in these weeks to join our assemblings, we have made a list to send to you each week the details for joining. If for any reason you prefer to not receive these updates, we have made it easier. You can simply write an email to: assembling-leave(a)16beavergroup.org

Dear Friends, Comrades, we would like to invite you this Sunday to join in what we hope will be the first of several encounters thinking through this moment, the current invasion of Ukraine by the Russian military, this war in a sea of wars we have been assembling and thinking through over these last 22 months. Our friends Olga Kopenkina and Dmitry Vilensky have been at the heart of trying to bring together and create this space of assembly. Anna Engelhardt, Josh Nadeau, Larissa Babij, Elena Ischenko are among those invited who have said they will be able to join and help us construct a space of sharing questions, positions. INVITATION This Sunday, February 27th, we would like to invite you to the first encounter and share with you Olga Kopenkina's introduction: We will begin this act with an analysis of the current moment created by the Russian invasion and bombing of Ukraine and Belarus being used as a military platzdarm, focusing on post-cold war colonialist expansion and the human cost of sustaining national sovereignty and territorial integrity. With Ukraine being now invaded and Kyiv apparently turned into a 'theater of war,' how does the international left address concepts such as 'national sovereignty' and 'territorial integrity' in a situation when a geopolitical positioning and proximity to the imperial power create a state of permanent vulnerability? Left political thinker Tariq Ali has recently suggested that 'national sovereignty' is a myth created by liberal ideologists to submit smaller and weaker nations to the international order dominated by unequal power dynamics. At the same time, it's a nation that is under attack right now. Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s neighboring nation Belarus, voices worn down by two-years of political crisis, ongoing suppression of human rights, including its own military threat from Russia, call for reconciliation and submission. Can we mobilize a potential Left movement (that includes "new left": feminist movements, movements for black life, LGBTQ+, indigenous nations, struggles, and others) that resists the logic of permanent vulnerability within the capitalist geopolitical divisions and create solidarity in support of vulnerable nations and peoples in struggle? We invite you to think with us along these lines. __________________________________ Please note, for those who have expressed interest in these weeks to join our assemblings, we have made a list to send to you each week the details for joining. Knowledge delusion - From Word to the World: Exploring the Impact of Literacy on our Consciousness
by Jinan K B 26 Feb '22

26 Feb '22

Look at the delusion of the modern mind. The package is mistaken for the product. In fact, there is no content, only the empty container! The future will depend on what we do to children now. No amount of environmental activism is going to save our life on earth unless we realize the problem is us- the anthropocentric humans. But each newborn child is born as nature-centric and there lies our hope. But the present notions about children are totally false. The most detrimental activity being conducted is, the way we treat them as inferior being that needs to be helped, instructed, taught. The sign of a developed, civilized society can be measured by the conditions it provides to its most vulnerable members without making them aware of their vulnerability and helplessness. Without understanding this vulnerability we are exposing children to the screens, the first screen being the printed one. I am giving an exploratory talk at the Re-Imagining Education conference on the impact of literacy on human consciousness. https://re-imagining.education/ Date & time: Sunday, Feb 27 - 6:30 AM - 7:30 PM IST Zoom link: Join on Zoom (Jungle Room) Session title: From Word to the World: Exploring the Impact of Literacy on our Consciousness -- Jinan, TEXT DISTORTS, DIGITAL DESTROYS, WORLD AWAKENS http://kbjinan.in/ <http://jinankb.in/> http://ekfoundation.in/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC80rT8Zj1EE8TrzD3UreYfQ www.re-cognition.org https://independent.academia.edu/JinanKodapully 09447121544

Dear all, This lecture on Thursday (24th February) by Starhawk, witch, peace activist, and ecofeminist, may be of interest: https://www.ircpl.columbia.edu/calendar/starhawk?mc_cid=05ed073255&mc_eid=5… Magic, Reason and Magical Thinking * Thursday, February 24, 2022 * 5:30 PM 7:00 PM [https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d246d010e59040001dc627a/3f2c…] A lecture by Starhawk (witch, peace activist, and ecofeminist). For over forty years, Starhawk has been a key figure in movements cultivating engaged approaches to magic and ecofeminism. While her work is situated outside the mainstream of academic discourse, it often speaks directly to the conceptual framings of secular modernity and public life. In this talk, Starhawk brings her work and experience to bear on a crucial topic in these times: the difference between magic and “magical thinking”—the rampant denial, conspiracy theories, and general irrationality swamping society today. Register Here ________________________________ Starhawk is an author, activist, permaculture designer and teacher, and a prominent voice in modern earth-based spirituality and ecofeminism. She is the author or co-author of thirteen books, including The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess and the ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing, and its sequel City of Refuge. Her most recent non-fiction book is The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups, on group dynamics, power, conflict and communications. Starhawk is one of the prominent leaders in the revival of earth-based spirituality and Goddess religion. She is a cofounder of Reclaiming, an activist branch of modern Pagan religion, and continues to work closely with the Reclaiming Community<http://reclaiming.org/>.

Utopian Studies Society Conference 2022: Opening Utopia: New Directions in Utopian Studies
by Davis, Laurence 22 Feb '22

22 Feb '22

Dear all, The following call for papers may be of interest: http://utopian-studies-europe.org/conference/ Utopian Studies Society Conference 2022 - Call for Papers July 13th – 15th, the University of Brighton, England. Conference Title: Opening Utopia: New Directions in Utopian Studies Keynote Speakers to include Professor Jack Halberstam on Queering Utopia The 2022 Utopian Studies Society (USS) Conference is dedicated to an exploration of radical utopian thinking and revolutionary praxis. It will create a space where we can explore the role of utopian thinking and practice in addressing some of the fundamental challenges of our times. As part of this exploration, we wish to engage those who use utopian thinking and practices to understand our present moment, its patterns of continuity and discontinuity with the times which generated it. The organisers of the last year’s conference noted that our time ‘is a turning point for Utopian Studies.’ In agreement, the organisers of this year’s conference wish to explore what our time is made of: our aim is to turn the concept of utopia, its long history and the contestations which make that history, to the present. To help thematise this, the conference organisers have focused on ‘hope’ as a key contested concept, one which can act as a focaliser for the conference’s exploration of the situation of utopia in the twenty-first century. It is our premise that there needs to be something fierce in any attachment to utopian thinking in these times. The world of the twenty-first century seems to be one committed not merely to the cancellation of hope but to the drowning of it in an excess of cruelty. That fierceness cannot be forged out of commitment alone, however: it requires a depth of understanding both of itself and of what it throws itself against. Do we yet have that depth understanding of utopian hope in what are arguably anti-utopian times? Utopian thinking – and the scholarship engaging with it – has always had an antagonistic edge: a sharp and unyielding critical relationship to the way things are in favour of how they might be. This presence of a critical relationship to the present is differentiated from the politics embedded in other models of thought by the future-focus of utopianism, the founding and sublation of critique by hope. Is this a model of thinking or even an ideal of thinking sufficient to our own moment, however? Hope – Utopian and Otherwise The 2022 USS Conference is dedicated to exploring the situation of utopia and of utopian thinking in the current conjuncture. It is specifically meant to focus on how ‘hope’ is active in the present, the forms it takes in politics, culture and philosophy. Not all forms of hope are utopian however: we anticipate the conference engaging with the mobilisation of hope in discourses which are explicitly or implicitly anti-utopian - whether at work in the fields of politics and culture or in the practices of everyday life. USS and Utopia beyond the University As part of the turn to the present of this USS Conference, we aim to design a programme which centres work designed to blur or break the well-policed and expensive borders between the university and the communities within which universities sit. To this end, we are proposing working with local activists in Brighton to establish some in-person and remote-access events which will highlight and explore hope as it is present in the politics of migrant-solidarity, anarchist and queer groups and spaces. We wish to open this thread of the conference to the work of others outside the formal limits of academia or who are inside an academic space pushing out. If you are involved with some work in your community (we understand communities as being social rather than sheerly geographical spaces, made by relationships and practices rather than maps), please consider how you could be involved and get in touch. The Organising Committee encourages individuals and research groups to curate their own panel proposals as a way of giving topics, problems and questions the significant scope they deserve. We also welcome individual abstracts which we hope to build into a number of thematic panels to facilitate delegates’ navigation of the conference. Potential topics for either panels or individuals include (but are not limited to): Hope in or as solidarity work Neoliberal forms of hope Does hope need to be decolonised? Indigenous hope Queer forms of hope Global ecocide and catastrophic hope Hope, post-individualism, and communism Culture is not Enough: hope in dystopian and post-apocalyptic fictions Methodological questions and hope, or the affordances and limits of hope as a concept The politics of hope? Utopian hope versus privatised hope What happens to hope in dystopia? Critical hope Pessimistic hope Radical and revolutionary hope Hope and the university Please send your abstract or other proposal to utopianstudiesconf(a)brighton.ac.uk<mailto:[email protected]> and indicate if you would like to engage remotely or in-person. The deadline for receipt of abstracts and proposals is April 4th, 2022 Proposals for presenting high-quality research and practice are welcome in one of the following formats: * 20-minute paper / please submit a 250-word abstract * Panel of multiple presentations (3 x 20-minute presentations for example or 5-7 x flash papers) by named contributors and chair / please submit a proposal with 1) the outline of the panel theme; 2) the presenters, their format and notes on their papers; 3) the name of the chair. * Roundtable of multiple speakers on a theme with a named chair to fit into a 90-minute slot. * Workshops on topics related to the conference theme or utopian studies more broadly, including pedagogy and career development. * We also welcome non-traditional formats for presenting work - duologues, performances, musical presentations, film screenings, debates and manifesto presentations, for example. The conference fee for in-person participation will be 120 GBP (full fee for 3 days). This in-person conference fee will be either refunded or not levied if covid infection rates make personal attendance impossible. The conference fee for online participation will be 20 GBP (3 days full fee) About 20 waivers of the online conference fee will be available. To apply for a fee-waiver, please contact the USS/E Secretary at justynagalantusse(a)utopos.net<mailto:[email protected]> for an application form.
