Contextual modes for operators.
by Andreas Liljeqvist 16 Aug '12

Hi, recently I have done a merge request for my nrepl-branch: https://gitorious.org/evil/evil/merge_requests/33 That got me thinking, we should really have a system for providing mode-specific operators or motions. Of course one could just say that the end user just have to redefine the associated function, but I think we could do better. Dispatch on major-mode and on optional list of minor-modes. I think many of the operations can be a simple dispatch on "(eq type 'line)". Then doing a eventual modification on the beg-end area. I am not really familiar with elisp though, what are the equivalence of multimethods as found in clojure for example? We can do context aware stuff like: "cW" stopping in the case of structure(parenthesis etc) when in lispy-modes. "gd" Using whatever we have available for definition. "i" Going to the first available actual input-area. (mostly for repls) I would leave visual selection as is. All this can be done inline in the relevant function, but the core quickly gets messy, so I would like the code to reside in evil-integration.el Also the end user should be able to easy define a code path for their mode without copy-pasting the original function. This would be a bit of work though, but I would like if Evil could offer sane operators for many frequently used modes. I would like some feedback before I start hacking on this, since I have very limited experience with both elisp and evil. Thanks

Of course, writing "Emacs is confused" should have been a reminder that in fact *I* was confused. The missing interactive mark threw me because I couldn't M-x evil-mode. Not sure why my after-init-hook wasn't working at the time, but this morning it's loading correctly. Sorry for the mailing list noise; at least I learned something. Trevor

Evil and package.el
by Trevor Murphy 07 Aug '12

Hi. Not sure if anybody else is using package.el to install Evil, but I noticed an issue. First up, the autoload cookie on evil-mode seems to be out of date (points to the wrong file, and near as I can tell it confuses Emacs because evil-mode is defined by a macro not a defun). That's a pretty small fix, but the bigger issue is this. Seems that even once the autoload cookie is corrected the package still won't load correctly with an M-x evil-mode or after-init-hook. NOTE: I'm out of my comfort zone with this explanation, so Emacs wizards please correct me. My best guess is that, since evil-mode is defined so early on in the package files (in evil-core.el), the call to autoloaded evil-mode only loads the prereqs / definitions up to evil-core and leaves the later files and after-init-hooks untouched. Attached is a "fix" that moves the evil-mode definition into the evil.el file (as well as updating the autoload cookie). I put "fix" in quotes because I don't know if this is the preferred solution to this issue. It worked for me in a pinch, but I have no idea what best practices would normally dictate. Patch contributed under GPLv3+, in case it's useful. Regards, Trevor

CJK support makes evil-forward-word-begin slow
by Nikolai Weibull 03 Aug '12

Hi! The CJK support added in 7adc3b119fcb4ef58d3d077dc38bc974af8c584b seems to make evil-forward-word-begin run a lot slower than before. evil-backward-word-begin seems to be unaffected, speed wise.

Evil fedora package & license issue
by Sébastien Willmann 01 Aug '12

01 Aug '12

Hello, I've created a rpm package for fedora. The review request is here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=844173 It seems that only evil.el contains license information. This may be a problem for sources redistribution. Could you put license information to all source files, and add the whole license in a separated file? Thanks, Sébastien Willmann

x-select-text isn’t always available
by Nikolai Weibull 29 Jul '12

Hi! A recent change (2012-07-28, 51672c8c) uses x-select-text. x-select-text isn’t available when emacs is running in the terminal, it seems, so this needs to be wrapped up in a conditional.

Vim switch buffer
by Petch Wannissorn 27 Jul '12

27 Jul '12

Hi, I notice that ':vs' splits screen vertically and C-W, H/L switches to the left/right buffers and they work wonder. I would like to know what is the proper way to rebind the buffer switching? I.e. I just want to do C-H instead of C-W, H to switch to the left pane. Thanks, Petch

Is undo-tree dependency strictly necessary
by Leo Alekseyev 21 Jul '12

21 Jul '12

I was wondering if undo-tree is only there to match Vim behavior, and if I could use Evil without it. I actually find built-in Emacs undo functionality intuitive and I'm used to how it operates. On the other hand, I've run into some cases where undo-tree didn't behave as expected. If there are no ill consequences in using original Emacs undo vs undo-tree, it would be nice if it were configurable. --Leo P.S.: Thanks Frank and Vegard for quick bug-fixing action!

evil-mode has led my cursor to the dark side!
by Keshav Kini 17 Jul '12

17 Jul '12

Hi, evil-mode is so evil that it has stained my cursor black, as black as the soul of evil-mode! I upgraded to Emacs 24.1 from 23.4, and I noticed a new Themes feature, so I set up the "tsdh-dark" theme, only to find that my cursor is now black, even though the background color is a dark gray. At first I thought some of my old customizations might have been conflicting with the theming, but after cleaning up my ~/.emacs as follows, I found the cursor remained black. ; specify packages for el-get (setq my-packages '(column-marker cython-mode evil evil-surround haskell-mode python-mode undo-tree)) (setq evil-want-C-u-scroll t) ; load el-get (add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/el-get/el-get") (unless (require 'el-get nil t) (with-current-buffer (url-retrieve-synchronously "https://raw.github.com/dimitri/el-get/master/el-get-install.el") (end-of-buffer) (eval-print-last-sexp))) (el-get 'sync my-packages) ; evil settings (evil-mode 1) (define-key evil-normal-state-map ",l" 'whitespace-mode) ; column markers (add-hook 'python-mode-hook '(lambda () (interactive) (column-marker-1 73) (column-marker-2 80))) (add-hook 'rst-mode-hook '(lambda () (interactive) (column-marker-1 73))) ; load Japanese input (require 'mozc) (setq default-input-method "japanese-mozc") ; setup smtpmail ; [redacted] ; start daemon (server-start) (custom-set-variables ;; custom-set-variables was added by Custom. ;; If you edit it by hand, you could mess it up, so be careful. ;; Your init file should contain only one such instance. ;; If there is more than one, they won't work right. '(custom-enabled-themes (quote (tsdh-dark))) '(evil-want-C-u-scroll t) '(file-precious-flag t) '(indent-tabs-mode nil)) (custom-set-faces ;; custom-set-faces was added by Custom. ;; If you edit it by hand, you could mess it up, so be careful. ;; Your init file should contain only one such instance. ;; If there is more than one, they won't work right. '(default ((t (:width semi-condensed))))) Then I suspected that the theme was just badly designed. But on a hunch, I tried commenting out the line "(evil-mode 1)", and restarted Emacs. The cursor was white! And running "M-x evil-mode" made it black again. How can I fix this? Is it a bug in evil-mode, or am I just doing something wrong? -Keshav
