A couple of questions
by Keshav Kini 13 Sep '13

Hello, First of all, thank you very much for your great work on evil! I'm really pleasantly surprised at how active your development is :) I'm a vim user who is trying to learn emacs without losing the handy modal editing of vim (as I imagine many others on this list are), and evil seems to be exactly what I need. I have a couple of questions. First, I am wondering if evil-want-C-u-scroll is broken. I have set it to t using M-x customize-group evil-mode, which causes (custom-set-variables '(evil-want-C-u-scroll t)) to appear in my ~/.emacs , but I don't see any difference in the behavior of evil. Is there something else I need to do in order to make C-u call evil-scroll-up (as C-h k C-d tells me that C-d is bound to evil-scroll-down)? Second, I am wondering about the behavior of :q . It seems to me that it behaves more like :qa does in vim. According to vim documentation, :q[uit] should "Quit the current window. Quit Vim if this is the last window.". So I guess it should be similar to kill-buffer in emacs, no? Thanks again! -Keshav

Is undo-tree dependency strictly necessary
by Leo Alekseyev 21 Jul '12

21 Jul '12

I was wondering if undo-tree is only there to match Vim behavior, and if I could use Evil without it. I actually find built-in Emacs undo functionality intuitive and I'm used to how it operates. On the other hand, I've run into some cases where undo-tree didn't behave as expected. If there are no ill consequences in using original Emacs undo vs undo-tree, it would be nice if it were configurable. --Leo P.S.: Thanks Frank and Vegard for quick bug-fixing action!

Help: Evil documentation
by Frank Fischer 07 Jun '12

07 Jun '12

Hi everyone, as stated in a recent post one of the most important missing parts of evil for a 1.0 is the documentation. The documentation should cover the main configuration possibilities as well as give some insights to evil's internal architecture. Of course, the first aspect is much more important than the latter. It should give a new user enough information to redefine key-bindings or tweak the customisation options and the advanced user to define own commands and motions. The documentation should be written in texinfo. There's a branch "doc" that already contains some initial documentation that can be used as a starting point but probably needs some restructuring. If anyone wants to contribute some documentation the best way is to send patches for the doc branch. I've written down *my* thoughts of how the outline of the doc should look like. Please feel free to comment, discuss, restructure, modify .... This should only be considered as a first guideline, not as something definite. Some parts are probably relatively easy to fill like states and keymaps, others are much more complicated and can probably only be filled by developers. Fortunately, the non-developer parts are probably more important. Please remember what information you missed when you started with evil ;) Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Frank -- PRELIMINARY OUTLINE --- * Introduction ** What's evil - differences to other packages, viper, vimpulse, vim-mode, ... - see Vim's documentation! ** Download, Installation - ELPA (soon?) - el-get - direct ** Mailing list, IRC, issue tracker * States ** Overview ** Initial states - starting state for major modes * Keymaps ** Overview ** States and keymaps - state specific keymaps (global, local) - keymap hierarchy - (which keymaps are enabled in which state) - priority of keymaps ** Defining key bindings - define key - Delayed initialisation of key bindings, evil-declare-key ** The ESC key - problems in the terminal * Commands ** Overview ** Ranges (inclusive, exclusive, line, block) ** Motions ** Text objects - how to define text objects - helper functions ** Commands ** Operators - Motions/Text objects and operators - Operators in visual state - Operators in ex-state * Interactive codes ** Overview ** Extended predefined codes ** Defining new codes * Ex-state ** Overview ** Defining ex command bindings (evil-ex-define-cmd) ** Defining ex commands (aka operators/commands with special interactive codes) ** Ex argument handlers ** Key bindings in ex state * Searching ** isearch module ** evil built-in module * The repeat system ** Overview ** Key sequence based recording ** Change based recording ** Programmable recording for commands * Customisation options * Helper Functions - functions/variables that can be used for own commands ** Current state, switching states

Evil-mode and camelcase movement
by Simon Carter 04 Jun '12

04 Jun '12

Hi! I was wondering if there was a canonical method for allowing camelcase and underscore word movement in evil-mode. I've looked at the suggestion in http://slashusr.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/heretical-confessions-of-an-emacs-…, but that solution was somewhat limited (no backward movement, and it only worked with other operators, rather than as an actual method of movement). Many thanks, and apologies in advance if I've missed something obvious! Simon

Pasted text and repeat ring
by Barry OReilly 01 Jun '12

01 Jun '12

I'll move the discussion of https://bitbucket.org/lyro/evil/issue/164/pasted-text-not-in-repeat-ring to the mailing list in case others are interested. The topic is what Evil does with the repeat ring when the user pastes text (via eg X11) while in insert mode. > vim has similar problems and a simple "solution" everything before the mouse click is dropped and the recording starts again. Probably the vim people have no good solution for the mouse-click problem, too. I see what you mean in gvim. If point moves due to mouse click it starts the recording again, though if I mouse-click where point already is, it doesn't drop the recording. I think gvim's behavior makes sense actually, given a mouse click is deemed non recordable. > Probably most evil-users do not use the mouse that often anyway The choice is limited if pasting from another application's frame. I just realized I made a language error when I said "window" in the original description. I meant "frame" or "the desktop environment's window". Sorry about that.

1.0 release soon?
by Sanel Zukan 01 Jun '12

01 Jun '12

Hi all, I'm using Evil last couple of months quite actively and is got very stable (congrats to developers!). Is there any plans for official 1.0 release soon? At least with this, we will have option to choose between bleeding edge and something we can always return to if something breaks with the latest code. Also it can be useful for cases (like mine) where we have installed Evil on several computers and from time to time versions got out of sync. Not to say about increased interest for Evil after some official news got spread :) Regards, Sanel
