<backspace> not bound properly in haskell-mode
by Keshav Kini 25 Jul '14

25 Jul '14

When I have a .hs file open in a buffer (i.e. with haskell-mode activated), it seems that typing <backspace> in <N> state actually deletes characters. Investigating a bit, I see that in other modes - such as message-mode, in which I'm typing this email - doing describe-key on <backspace> yields the following: DEL (translated from <backspace>) runs the command evil-backward-char, which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `evil-commands.el'. In haskell-mode, however, I get: <backspace> runs the command haskell-indentation-delete-backward-char, which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `haskell-indentation.el'. The difference I notice is that in the first, we have "DEL (translated from <backspace>)", but in the second, just "<backspace>". From this I gather that evil-mode probably traps the key DEL, but not the key <backspace>. Should evil-mode perhaps trap <backspace> directly as well as DEL? Or is this a bug in haskell-mode, i.e. should haskell-mode be trapping DEL instead of <backspace>? -Keshav

A couple of questions
by Keshav Kini 13 Sep '13

13 Sep '13

Hello, First of all, thank you very much for your great work on evil! I'm really pleasantly surprised at how active your development is :) I'm a vim user who is trying to learn emacs without losing the handy modal editing of vim (as I imagine many others on this list are), and evil seems to be exactly what I need. I have a couple of questions. First, I am wondering if evil-want-C-u-scroll is broken. I have set it to t using M-x customize-group evil-mode, which causes (custom-set-variables '(evil-want-C-u-scroll t)) to appear in my ~/.emacs , but I don't see any difference in the behavior of evil. Is there something else I need to do in order to make C-u call evil-scroll-up (as C-h k C-d tells me that C-d is bound to evil-scroll-down)? Second, I am wondering about the behavior of :q . It seems to me that it behaves more like :qa does in vim. According to vim documentation, :q[uit] should "Quit the current window. Quit Vim if this is the last window.". So I guess it should be similar to kill-buffer in emacs, no? Thanks again! -Keshav

M- commands no longer pass through
by Eric S Fraga 13 Mar '13

13 Mar '13

Hello, in the past week sometime, give or take, the default behaviour of evil seems to have change with respect to any key bindings *not* in the standard (normal, insert) maps. I first noticed this when trying to type M-q while writing; this key is globally bound to maybe-fill-paragraph, my own function. Now even M-x doesn't work. I have to switch to emacs mode first. The annoying thing is that C-h c M-q says M-q runs the command maybe-fill-paragraph but hitting M-q gives M-q is undefined Similar behaviour is observed for M-x, M-; and M-:, all of which are quite hard-coded into my emacs fingers and have no immediate evil equivalents in any case... Is there a change in the default configuration I have missed? I have gone through the git log but haven't noticed anything specific. I am using evil version 1.0-dev. Is there a variable I can tweak to allow these keystrokes to go through? Thanks, eric -- : Eric S Fraga, GnuPG: 0xC89193D8FFFCF67D : in Emacs 24.3.50.1 + Ma Gnus v0.6 + evil 1.0-dev : BBDB version 3.02 ($Date: 2013/02/16 14:37:17 $)

Evil, emulate Vim gdefault option
by Giovanni Maggiorani 25 Feb '13

25 Feb '13

Hello, Vim has an option set gdefault to include the g option as default in the substitute :s command, i.e. to write: 1) :%s/pattern/replace but meaning instead 2) :%s/pattern/replace/g Also IIRC gdefault reverses the effect of g, ie. adding it results in command 1). Is there a way to set the same option in Evil? Thank you and great work with Evil, Giovanni Maggiorani

Advice that calls transpose-chars instead of evil-shift-right-line (C-t)
by Christoph LANGE 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

Hi all, on the one hand I welcome the new commands evil-shift-right-line (C-t) and evil-shift-left-line (C-d) in insert mode, as this has been one of the features I had always missed in evil. And it is good that evil-shift-right-line is bound to C-t instead of C-i as in vim, as C-i does other useful things in Emacs. However, one of my most frequently used Emacs functions in insert mode has so far been transpose-chars, which is what Emacs binds to C-t. (Transposing two characters in vim is a PITA; you'd have to do "_xp in command mode.) So I came up with the following for my .emacs: (defadvice evil-shift-right-line (around evil activate) "call transpose-chars if universal argument given" (if (equal current-prefix-arg '(4)) (transpose-chars 1) ad-do-it)) This gives me transpose-chars with C-u C-t, and evil-shift-right-line with C-t. The only drawback is that it unconditionally calls transpose-chars with an argument of 1, but so far I have never used it with different arguments anyway. Suggestions for improving this are welcome. [ANN] evil 1.0.0 Released
by Frank Fischer 19 Feb '13

19 Feb '13

Hi Evil users, finally we managed to release version 1.0.0 of Evil. The stable version will be maintaned in the branch 'stable-1.0' in the git repository [1], the 'master' branch remains for future developments. Evil is also available as ELPA package from marmalade [2]. In fact, the reason that it took so long is that I've not been able to upload the package to marmalade -- I've even managed to crash the server two times (maybe to contents of the package was too Evil ...). So I tried for some weeks and finally succeeded today ;) May the future be Evil, Frank [1] https://gitorious.org/evil/ [2] http://marmalade-repo.org

changing key bindings in visual-block state only
by Patrick Brinich-Langlois 13 Feb '13

13 Feb '13

Is it possible to change settings only in visual-block state but not in visual state? I want to remap a key binding only in visual-block state, and there seems not to be a hook for this specific purpose, though there are hooks for entering and exiting visual state. Also, what's the difference between normal state and motion state? I've tried various commands in both modes and they seem to do the same things.

How to control Emacs vs. vi state with a file local variable?
by Christoph LANGE 04 Feb '13

04 Feb '13

Dear evil developers/users, I would like to generally open all files of a certain type (org-mode) in vi state but make exceptions for a few individual files. Using file local variables didn't work. I tried Local Variables: eval: (evil-emacs-state) End: but apparently the order of execution was the following: 1. load the file 2. apply the local variables, switching to Emacs state 3. here, or possibly before (2), switch buffer to org-mode 4. on seeing that org-mode is not in the list of evil-emacs-state-modes, switch to vi state If this assumption is right, is there any way of opening individual files in Emacs state? Cheers, and thanks in advance, Christoph -- Christoph Lange, http://www.facebook.com/ch.lange, Skype duke4701
