<backspace> not bound properly in haskell-mode
by Keshav Kini 25 Jul '14

25 Jul '14

When I have a .hs file open in a buffer (i.e. with haskell-mode activated), it seems that typing <backspace> in <N> state actually deletes characters. Investigating a bit, I see that in other modes - such as message-mode, in which I'm typing this email - doing describe-key on <backspace> yields the following: DEL (translated from <backspace>) runs the command evil-backward-char, which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `evil-commands.el'. In haskell-mode, however, I get: <backspace> runs the command haskell-indentation-delete-backward-char, which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `haskell-indentation.el'. The difference I notice is that in the first, we have "DEL (translated from <backspace>)", but in the second, just "<backspace>". From this I gather that evil-mode probably traps the key DEL, but not the key <backspace>. Should evil-mode perhaps trap <backspace> directly as well as DEL? Or is this a bug in haskell-mode, i.e. should haskell-mode be trapping DEL instead of <backspace>? -Keshav

evil, agenda, list of all todo items (basic question)
by Andrew Forrester 08 Jan '14

Hi everyone, Question: (background below) I'm using Evil in Emacs Org Mode, and I'm having trouble in trying to do something simple in the agenda. I type ";a" to enter the agenda, then I type "t" to filter my file into just the non-finished todo items, but it doesn't filter and instead gives me some kind of status buffer or something that I can't figure out (see below). I've tried typing various things that it seems to be suggesting, including ("N", "r", "N r"), but it still doesn't do the trick. I've also done some googling and manual searching, without success yet. What am I doing wrong? What I see when I try to filter my file to see a list of non-finished todo items: ================================================== * DONE text * PROJ A title for a multi-step item. :@computer:... * TODO Say hello. * NEXT Buy socks. * Not a todo item. -UU-:----F1 test.org All L1 <N> (Org Ind EvilOrg) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Global list of TODO items of type: ALL Available with `N r': (0)[ALL] ================================================== Background: I'm new to Emacs, Vim, and Org Mode, but I decided I wanted Vim keystrokes and Org Mode for organization. So it looks like my best options are Evil or VimOrganizer. I'm trying Evil right now, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do basic things. Thanks for any help you can give! -Andrew

Fundamental mode and undo-tree-mode
by Linus Arver 05 Jan '14

05 Jan '14

Hello list, When I open a file with an unrecognized extension, my Emacs opens it in Fundamental mode (which is what I want). I have Evil enabled with (require 'evil) (evil-mode 1) but the file's buffer does not have undo-tree-mode enabled. I have to manually enable it with M-x undo-tree-mode . I tried adding (global-undo-tree-mode) in my ~/.emacs, but I get nothing. I also tried adding (add-hook 'evil-after-load-hook (lambda () (undo-tree-mode) ) ) but it doesn't help. If I set my emacs' default major mode to text-mode, then undo-tree gets enabled and everything works, but I don't want to use this workaround. I also tried deleting all of my ~/.emacs except for these lines (require 'evil) (evil-mode 1) , but I still get the same behavior. Interestingly, the *Messages* buffer has undo-tree-mode enabled with this same configuration. Does anyone have the same issues with Fundamental Mode + Undo Tree Mode when opening a file? -L

how to change key bindings for evil-ex interactive function
by jenia ivlev 30 Dec '13

I want to be able to scroll the ex history using \M-p key. That is if i press ":%s/blabla/helloworld/gcI" and later ":\M-p" i want the above to appear. So something like this: (define-key-evil minibuffer-local-map "\M-p" 'function-that-i-want-to-call) Thanks in advance.

I've seen my first solution also in some dotfile on github, thus i thought it is commonly used and should work. I've also seen some nifty tricks there like: (setq evil-normal-state-tag (propertize "N" 'face '((:background "green")))) which isn't mentioned in the documentation. Aren't those tag variables meant for use by the user? Maybe i'm wrong, but i suspect there are some evil functions and variables missing in the documentation. Anyway, keep on the good work! Finally turning the finger shattering editor inside a great OS into a shining component :). Greetings

Proper use of the clipboard
by Titus von der Malsburg 23 Dec '13

Dear list! I'm a bit confused about Evil's interaction with the clipboard. When I set x-select-enable-clipboard to t, visual selections are copied to the clipboard as well as yanked and deleted text. However, when I set x-select-enable-clipboard to nil, neither visual selections nor yanked and deleted text are copied to the clipboard. Both behaviors seem inconsistent with what other applications do under the X window system. My understanding is that visual selections should go into the primary selection while yanked and deleted text should go to the clipboard. Is it possible to configure Evil to behave this way? My googling didn't turn up anything useful. Titus

Hooks not working
by BoSa 22 Dec '13

22 Dec '13

Hello, I do have a problem with keybindings defined with evil-define-key and hooks. According to the documentation, i should use the following lisp code to enable special bindings for certain modes. (define-minor-mode evil-neo-org-mode "Neo+Evil+Org mode" :init-value nil :lighter " NeoEvilOrg" :keymap (make-sparse-keymap)) (evil-define-key 'normal evil-neo-org-mode-map (kbd "TAB") 'org-cycle) (add-hook 'org-mode-hook 'evil-neo-org-mode) But the hook won't trigger. If i open some org file, TAB is still bound to its old command. Only if i switch to the insert state, or switch back to evil mode by pressing C-z twice, TAB calls the 'org-cycle command. First i thought this is some org mode problem, but i have the same issue in other modes too. I did another test and commented out the (evil-mode 1) command in my init file. Thus after starting emacs and opening an org file, i called (evil-mode) interactively and then TAB as defined by evil-define-key above worked as expected. At the end it seems evil doesn't observe the bindings defined by evil-defined-key immediately after startup. Only if i reenter some state they take effect. I have no clue what i'm doing wrong. Greetings, Chilli

evil/incf/add-to-list

i have emacs 24.3.1, and until today i've been using evil 1.0.7: (add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/evil/lib") (add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/evil") (require 'undo-tree) (require 'evil) (global-undo-tree-mode) (evil-mode 1) now i'm using melpa: (require 'package) (add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/elpa/undo-tree-20131118.1744") (add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacs.d/elpa/evil-20131218.54") (require 'undo-tree) (require 'evil) (global-undo-tree-mode) (evil-mode 1) apparently evil 1.0.7 in turn made incf available. now, to use incf i also need: (add-to-list 'load-path "/usr/local/share/emacs/24.3/lisp/emacs-lisp") (require 'cl) and in the process i noticed that i don't need any of the add-to-list's in order to run the (require '...)'s manually (via ^x^e), but i do need them if i want the require's to run in my .emacs! can anyone help me understand or drop me a pointer? am i missing something?
