A couple of questions

Hello, First of all, thank you very much for your great work on evil! I'm really pleasantly surprised at how active your development is :) I'm a vim user who is trying to learn emacs without losing the handy modal editing of vim (as I imagine many others on this list are), and evil seems to be exactly what I need. I have a couple of questions. First, I am wondering if evil-want-C-u-scroll is broken. I have set it to t using M-x customize-group evil-mode, which causes (custom-set-variables '(evil-want-C-u-scroll t)) to appear in my ~/.emacs , but I don't see any difference in the behavior of evil. Is there something else I need to do in order to make C-u call evil-scroll-up (as C-h k C-d tells me that C-d is bound to evil-scroll-down)? Second, I am wondering about the behavior of :q . It seems to me that it behaves more like :qa does in vim. According to vim documentation, :q[uit] should "Quit the current window. Quit Vim if this is the last window.". So I guess it should be similar to kill-buffer in emacs, no? Thanks again! -Keshav

Is undo-tree dependency strictly necessary
by Leo Alekseyev 21 Jul '12

21 Jul '12

I was wondering if undo-tree is only there to match Vim behavior, and if I could use Evil without it. I actually find built-in Emacs undo functionality intuitive and I'm used to how it operates. On the other hand, I've run into some cases where undo-tree didn't behave as expected. If there are no ill consequences in using original Emacs undo vs undo-tree, it would be nice if it were configurable. --Leo P.S.: Thanks Frank and Vegard for quick bug-fixing action!

1.0 release soon?
by Sanel Zukan 01 Jun '12

Hi all, I'm using Evil last couple of months quite actively and is got very stable (congrats to developers!). Is there any plans for official 1.0 release soon? At least with this, we will have option to choose between bleeding edge and something we can always return to if something breaks with the latest code. Also it can be useful for cases (like mine) where we have installed Evil on several computers and from time to time versions got out of sync. Not to say about increased interest for Evil after some official news got spread :) Regards, Sanel

rebinding C-w
by Bob Nnamtrop 31 May '12

31 May '12

I am used to the emacs windowing commands so I'd like to rebind C-w in normal state to the usual emacs binding (kill-region) or the evil "equivalent" (evil-delete). Is there a better choice here? However, the usual way does not work: (define-key evil-normal-state-map "\C-w" 'kill-region) It doesn't matter if it is before or after (require 'evil). What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Bob

insert a symbol
by Petro 30 May '12

Hi all. Is there a way to insert one symbol without entering into insert mode? I find it unconvenient to push "i <symbol> C-[" to insert one letter. Thanks. Petro.

IRC channel
by Keshav Kini 27 May '12

Hi, If I (or someone) made an IRC channel on freenode for evil-mode, would users/developers be interested in hanging out there to field questions or have realtime dev discussion? I feel that it might be more accessible to users than the mailing list, but for evil-mode's audience that might not be true, I guess. -Keshav

Sequence of custom-set-variables and Evil init
by Barry OReilly 25 May '12

25 May '12

I'm not sure whether to place the custom-set-variables call before or after initializing Evil. Some customizations only work before Evil initialization, some after. For example, (custom-set-variables '(evil-overriding-maps nil)) doesn't work correctly if after Evil init. (custom-set-variables '(evil-search-module (quote evil-search))) doesn't work correctly if before evil init. Which way is it supposed to be? If I leave them separated, Emacs consolidates them into one again when I use its customization interface.
