vimpulse: imap "jk" to ESC
by Linus Arver 29 Apr '11

29 Apr '11

Hello, I'd like to know how to map "jk" to act as the ESC key in insert mode. I have tried (vimpulse-imap "jk" 'viper-intercept-ESC-key) without success. -Linus

[implementations-list] issue with viper-escape-to-emacs
by Fabian Braennstroem 25 Apr '11

25 Apr '11

Hello, with the new vimpulse, I have a problem escaping back to emacs mode. I need this option to run some traditional 'M-x' functions. Up to now I used: (define-key viper-vi-global-user-map (kbd "\\\\") 'viper-escape-to-emacs) Unfortunately, this does not work anymore, as using M(Esc) for the next command cancels this escape and inserts the second of the backslash into the buffer... Would be nice, if you have a hint! Regards! Fabian

parsing search/replace regex to support function calls
by Justin Zhu 25 Mar '11

25 Mar '11

Currently, this command :s/.*/\,(upcase \&) it complains with: ex-substitute: Invalid use of `\' in replacement text Ideally the behavior should copy that of replace-regexp, which calls upcase on the provided parameter. Is this problem in the domain of vimpulse? Thanks, Justin

]_ viper commands broken? \ maps to viper-escape-to-emacs
by Justin Zhu 24 Mar '11

24 Mar '11

The viper command ]] should go to the next heading as defined here: http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_mono/viper.html#Move-Commands. However, it is undefined as is ]<a-z> to show contents of a register. There is the vimpulse \" command instead but \ binds to viper-escape-to-emacs for me. The ] behavior is caused by: (define-key viper-vi-basic-map "]" nil) ; delete `viper-ket-function' binding Not a big deal but would be nice for analogues to exist for the missing commands. -- [<a-z> to show contents of a text marker always complains with: "Text marker doesn't point anywhere". Not sure if its caused by vimpulse. -- I have an issue with macros where RET is not recorded. I have RET bound to comment-indent-new-line which I though was the problem. So I instead tried binding RET to vimpulse-autoindent, which does not produce a newline on RET as I'd expect. -- On a side note, I would add to vimpulse-window-map: (define-key map "=" 'balance-windows) as thats the behavior in vim Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Justin

Mapping ESC in minibuffer normal mode to keyboard-quit and autoindent woes
by Justin Zhu 14 Mar '11

14 Mar '11

I like to have ESC behave like C-g in normal mode in the minibuffer, I've tried to no avail: (vimpulse-map (kbd "ESC") 'keyboard-quit) (define-key viper-minibuffer-map (kbd "ESC") 'keyboard-quit) Another issue is vimpulse messing with comment indenting. I have RET bound to comment-indent-new-line so that in a comment, pressing enter inserts a comment prefix. However, with vimpulse on, it inserts an extra tab to the new line. Eg. Initially in insert mode, cursor at | //| RET // //| RET // // //| RET // // // //| .. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Vimpulse and vim-mode
by Frank Fischer 03 Mar '11

03 Mar '11

Hi, my name is Frank Fischer and I'm the maintainer of vim-mode, another package providing ViM-like key bindings for Emacs. I'm following the development of Vimpulse, too, and it seems to me that Vimpulse tries to drop its Viper-connections in the next releases. Well, not relying on Viper with its hard-coded commands was the main reason for me to start vim-mode about two years ago. Now vim-mode is quite advanced since then, all based around a relatively small core and a lot of commands and motions, freely configurable and so on. It has all I need in may daily workflow, but this does not mean it's complete or perfect or whatever. Because Vimpulse and vim-mode both seem to have the same goal or very similar goals, providing more of Vim's features, and somehow replacing the old viper-code by more structured core, the natural question arises if we should try to join both projects to a common one. I think both projects currently have their strengths and weaknesses and certainly both of us learned a lot about the difficulties when trying to make Emacs behave more like Vim, and sharing this experience may be a good idea. So, what do you think? Bye, Frank Fischer
