emacs ecb conflicts with evil-mode?
by Hongxu Chen 16 Mar '13

16 Mar '13

Hi all, I am new to Emacs(and evil-mode). Currently I have difficulties in using evil-mode when *ecb mode* is activated. The problem is that the *Enter *key is no longer available in any windows of ecb, so I cannot switch from the navigation window to the source code window at the right side. I also tried `(evil-set-initial-state 'ecb-minor-mode 'emacs)`, this time I can use the default key-bindings in ecb(and so is the *Enter *key). What annoys me is that when I switch to the source code, evil-mode key-bindings are deactivated. And even I now toggle ecb-minor-mode off, the key-bindings are still not available. So I have to `M-x evil-mode` twice to use the right evil-mode. I know this problem may lie in the fault of ecb, however I guess someone else has also come across this problem when using evil. Thanks in advance. Hongxu Chen

NEO and Evil
by Tempora Tempa 15 Mar '13

Hi all, I'm using the NEO keyboard layout, and i want to integrate it somehow with Evil. One case is to change the state bindings of the key 'r', because 'r' is assigned to 'k' on qwert(z|y). Currently i'm doing this by editing the global evil state maps directly: (define-key evil-normal-state-map "r" nil) (define-key evil-motion-state-map "r" 'evil-previous-line) Without setting 'r' to nil in normal state, i would call the evil-replace function every time, when i try to move one line up. I don't know whether this is the clean way of removing key bindings from a map. I've copied this solution from somewhere. Now this approach feels pretty dirty, because i think it's not intended by the developers to change the evil state maps this way. My second idea was to create a NEO minor mode with a sparse keymap and use evil-define-key, as described in the documentation. However, "unsetting" the 'r' keybinding in the normal state didn't work: (evil-define-key 'normal neo-mode-map "r" nil) ;; or 'undefine instead of nil (evil-define-key 'motion neo-mode-map "r" 'evil-previous-line) Pressing 'r' in normal state just doesn't do anything, but doing so in a motion only state buffer (like *Help*) worked. I've tried to understand how the auxiliary keymaps for evil work. It seems the keybinding of 'r' to nil or 'undefine is stored in the auxiliary map and takes precedence over the keybind for the motion state. Last i found the evil-make-intercept-map and evil-make-overriding-map functions, but i don't think they are solutions to my problem. I think the neo-minor-mode solution would be the best way, but i don't know how to completely remove a keybinding from an evil state during such a mode. I would be thankful for any advice. Deleting buffer without losing the split window
by Sanel Zukan 15 Mar '13

Hi all, I'm just curious how do you guys handle this case? I often have screen split with a couple of buffers and when I delete one of them, split got messed up. Vim have one cool trick for this: ':bp|bd #' and evil will only execute ':bp' part. Is it hard to add similar feature (this looks to me like piping the commands) or Emacs has something better under the belt? Regards, Sanel

M- commands no longer pass through
by Eric S Fraga 13 Mar '13

Hello, in the past week sometime, give or take, the default behaviour of evil seems to have change with respect to any key bindings *not* in the standard (normal, insert) maps. I first noticed this when trying to type M-q while writing; this key is globally bound to maybe-fill-paragraph, my own function. Now even M-x doesn't work. I have to switch to emacs mode first. The annoying thing is that C-h c M-q says M-q runs the command maybe-fill-paragraph but hitting M-q gives M-q is undefined Similar behaviour is observed for M-x, M-; and M-:, all of which are quite hard-coded into my emacs fingers and have no immediate evil equivalents in any case... Is there a change in the default configuration I have missed? I have gone through the git log but haven't noticed anything specific. I am using evil version 1.0-dev. Is there a variable I can tweak to allow these keystrokes to go through? Thanks, eric -- : Eric S Fraga, GnuPG: 0xC89193D8FFFCF67D : in Emacs 24.3.50.1 + Ma Gnus v0.6 + evil 1.0-dev : BBDB version 3.02 ($Date: 2013/02/16 14:37:17 $)

Selectively replace motion keys
by Ben Sanchez 13 Mar '13

13 Mar '13

Hi, I have made magit status mode start in motion state and it works well for most of the magit keys. However, evil state motion overrides a few magit keys such as F ("git pull") and instead expects a char to move leftwards. How can I make some magit keys selectively have precedence over evil motion keys? Thanks!

Thank you guys for replies: didn't know C-x k will keep window layout. Frank Fischer wrote: > Maybe we could add another parameter that determines whether the > windows should be closed and defaults to some customization > option. +1 Although this could start deviating from Vim's features (I'm not sure does vim provide similar option) it will make life easier for sure. Aside from that, solution like: (evil-ex-define-cmd "bdp" 'kill-buffer) is perfectly acceptable for me too ;) Christoph LANGE wrote: > The pipe is somewhat misleading; here's what the vim help says: > >--- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< > '|' can be used to separate commands, so you can give multiple commands > in one > line. If you want to use '|' in an argument, precede it with '\'. >--- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< --- %< Ahh, thanks for the tip! Regards, Sanel

Hi, > Now this approach feels pretty dirty, because i think it's not intended by the developers to change the evil state maps this way. > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Why do you fill this is dirty. If the function works it was certainly designed for this purpose. I am writing with evil using a bépo layout, and I did not create any minor mode, just rebinded the keys the way you do it and everything works fine… Of course you can make a minor mode, but it doesn't make sense to me if you are always using your Neo layout… I prefer the Keep It Simple, Stupid way: the less lines of code, the better… Damien Thiriet > Hi all, > > I'm using the NEO keyboard layout, and i want to integrate it somehow with Evil. Evil, emulate Vim gdefault option
by Giovanni Maggiorani 25 Feb '13

25 Feb '13

Hello, Vim has an option set gdefault to include the g option as default in the substitute :s command, i.e. to write: 1) :%s/pattern/replace but meaning instead 2) :%s/pattern/replace/g Also IIRC gdefault reverses the effect of g, ie. adding it results in command 1). Is there a way to set the same option in Evil? Thank you and great work with Evil, Giovanni Maggiorani

Advice that calls transpose-chars instead of evil-shift-right-line (C-t)
by Christoph LANGE 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

Hi all, on the one hand I welcome the new commands evil-shift-right-line (C-t) and evil-shift-left-line (C-d) in insert mode, as this has been one of the features I had always missed in evil. And it is good that evil-shift-right-line is bound to C-t instead of C-i as in vim, as C-i does other useful things in Emacs. However, one of my most frequently used Emacs functions in insert mode has so far been transpose-chars, which is what Emacs binds to C-t. (Transposing two characters in vim is a PITA; you'd have to do "_xp in command mode.) So I came up with the following for my .emacs: (defadvice evil-shift-right-line (around evil activate) "call transpose-chars if universal argument given" (if (equal current-prefix-arg '(4)) (transpose-chars 1) ad-do-it)) This gives me transpose-chars with C-u C-t, and evil-shift-right-line with C-t. The only drawback is that it unconditionally calls transpose-chars with an argument of 1, but so far I have never used it with different arguments anyway. Suggestions for improving this are welcome.
