Dear All, It is my pleasure to announce a webinar this Friday, Aug. 22, at 1 PM UTC (6:30 PM IST) which features a presentation by and interview with Somnath, an activist who has been engaged with Adivasi communities in India for a long time, working with them on projects of food and water security, afforestation and livelihoods. This is under the auspices of My Climate Risk Education Working Group. [ https://www.wcrp-climate.org/my-climate-risk | My Climate Risk ] is an initiative of the World Climate Research Programme. Details below and in the attached flyer. Please join us this Friday, and please forward to all your networks! Thanks so much! Best, Vandana Inspirations for Better Futures: Learning and Working with Adivasis in India 13:00 Hours UTC, Friday, 22 August, 2025 Registration link: [ https://zoom.us/meeting/register/JWouOF8tSOSuhsa-vNINLg | https://zoom.us/meeting/register/JWouOF8tSOSuhsa-vNINLg ] A Webinar by WCRP MCR Education Working Group, Hosted by MCR Himalayan Hub at the Himalayan University Consortium! At a moment when the world faces multiple existential threats, including climate disruption, what ways of thinking, being and acting might enable us to work for better futures? Somnath, a dedicated social and political activist, describes what he has learned from engagement with Adivasi (Indigenous) and forest-dwelling communities in India over the past twenty years. By foregrounding the experiences, perspectives and worldviews of marginalized communities, paying attention to issues of power and positioning, and building equitable and trust-based relationships over long spans of time, extraordinary transformations are possible, enabling the emergence of new ideas, concepts and actions. Somnath describes how this approach has led to Adivasi communities raising themselves out of abject poverty toward a resurgence of water security, local forests, livelihoods, traditional knowledge systems and dignity.
