Exploring the impact of literacy in the making of ANTHROPOCENTRIC 'MODERN' HUMANS
by Jinan K B 30 May '22

hello I am sending the recording of the talk on the impact of literacy on the formation of 'beingness' https://youtu.be/pJebkr0DHKQ CONSEQUENCE OF LITERACY: Exploring the impact of literacy in the making of ANTHROPOCENTRIC 'MODERN' HUMANS Literates learn the WORD. Illiterates learn the WORLD. 1. Why the modern mind will find it difficult to understand this and how it will resist knowing facts. 2. Conscious Reasoning - the product of readymade knowledge, linearity, and sequentiality- the product of the printed word. 3. Formation of the mind: How do the world and the word shape the formation of illiterates and literates shape? 4. How does knowledge precedes knowing causing an ontological reversal? 5. How does it usher in the process of alienation - Body-mind fragmentation? 6. Indigenous and modern childhood: A Comparison, 7. Knowledge production and knowledge transfer, 8. Experiential language of illiterates and mentally created language of literates, 9. Presence and absence. Hope you will find time to reflect on the issues I have raised and engage in exploration with me. Every time I use this assignment the students go from being extremely skeptical - including saying things like what do I have to offer and how could one hour matter - to being opened to affirmations of worth and possibility. Perhaps we might do a joint essay? We've already begun exploring how we might match our students with each other in a future time bank experience. I feel certain we'll figure out how to do that for an extraordinary experience. I'll also report that from the PeDaGoG network, Sayan and I connected. One of his colleagues at WITS CDS spoke with my Ethnicity class this spring (as did Devika btw), and I spoke with folks at the center yesterday and we'll be meeting up again later today. Also met with Patrick Bond yesterday, Ashish, who I believe you know well. Building forward with inspiration from all of you. You are aware (mostly thanks to my own emails) that Sujit and I offered the first session in the new webinar series called 'Learnings for Alternative Futures' (designed in collaboration with several valuable networks) by presenting our initiative, 'Living Utopias' on April 1, 2022. It was a session with a small group and we had a very useful conversation amongst the participants. One of them , Melanie Bush (more on her in our google sheet<https://bit.ly/3MWczsB> ) reached out to us in the following week and we had a lovely conversation about pedagogies and experiential learning- making abstract values more tangible. And so I learnt from Melanie (with her generous sharing of ideas ) how to set up an assignment around a Time Bank in a classroom space . I was skeptical but my students in an Indian University (36 of them) rose to the occasion and exceeded the brief and more. They paired up on their own and shared their skills and gifts. So from bike rides to coffee evenings to cooking, a lake walk, a photoshoot, braiding hair, to watching a film together, playing childhood games - they completed their time sharing tasks in myriad ways. And just like that my University class transformed like magic . We had a whole unit on Solidarity Economics with the usual reading list but now each one of them came back to class with a different mind set towards learning. They were so much more engaged as participants in ideas around Living Utopias. Without ANY exception I had 36 reflections that spoke about the huge impact a small assignment made on the possibilities that friendships and connections bring, It was difficult to read their sensitive reflections without tearing up. These students are in the age group of 22-27 years. Coming out of COVID closures, and increased polarisation in the world around them, several are struggling to make and maintain real physical comradeship and friendships. Many are also very despondent about the future. In this context, thanks to such a simple assignment, I got to connect with my students in a very different and humane way. I wanted to publicly thank Melanie in this forum for this impromptu collaboration. Following our webinar was Dan Baron's fantastic session and a 3rd webinar in the series is on its way. I hope what is now set rolling continues and we do not stop soon. Because look how New York affected Bangalore!. A new article on the Radical Ecological Democracy website - "Development as service"
by Pallav Das 27 May '22

27 May '22

Friends, A new article, "Development as service" has been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website: https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/development-as-service/ Is nature an entity in its own right with intrinsic value to which one owes gratitude and respect, or is it a mere slave of human possession and exploitation? Dorine van Norren answers this question with deep reflection on traditional paradigms which have existed in indigenous cultures for thousands of years, and after having survived the centuries long onslaught of free market fundamentalism, are now providing viable alternatives to the fast crumbling ideas and practices of modern “development”. Delving into the tenets of African *Ubuntu*, Andean *Buen Vivir* and the Bhutanese precept of “Gross National Happiness”, van Norren asserts that these paradigms are paving the way toward establishing a society rooted in solidarity with one another and one’s living environment, with an enduring commitment to “development”, which is centered on service or reciprocity. Please take a look and join the discussion on RED Listserv and the website discussion forum. The author is copied here in case you would like to contact her directly. Best, Pallav

Urgent Help for El Cambalache / Ayuda Urgente Para El Cambalache
by Erin Araujo 23 May '22

23 May '22

***ESPAÑOL ABAJO*** ***PORTUGUÊS ABAIXO*** ***FRACAIS EN BAS*** Dear Colleagues, I am writing to share some challenging news. My name is Erin Araujo, from the Department of Decolonial Economics at El Cambalache, located in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. This is a call for your help and support. In early April the project was notified that WE WILL BE EVICTED from our home, the heart of our community in the next 3-9 months. As a collective we have a local project that is a space for de- and anti-colonial economic practice, theorization and international education. As a space of de- and anti-colonial struggle we practice knowledge creation and shifting our subjectivities through exchanges of knowledge, things, abilities and mutual aid. We are a small collective of seven women from the Americas. We are facing a crisis. Since 2019, the El Cambalache Collective has provided online and in person workshops to support learning about the wide range of de- and anti-colonial economic practices throughout the Americas that have been (and continue to be) part of many indigenous and rural communities’ resistance to the imposition of capitalism, coloniality and modernity. We share practices about how to create and support decolonial economic projects with students, professional academics and activists around the world. Our space is one of the few that anti-colonial in form and function. It has not been easy to start a space that realizes non-oppressive forms of research methodology and knowledge creation. To see our video about the situation: https://youtu.be/k2R_XAtuW6o <https://youtu.be/k2R_XAtuW6o> We live in a state that is imbued with constant violence in myriad forms. In reality, we have a right to this space because through the Mexican legal system we have lived in and worked in our home for enough years that it should already be ours. However, we fear that if we were to pursue a legal avenue we would be killed. So, our option at the moment is to try to fundraise enough money to purchase the house. Normally we fund our project through these workshops but our yearly budget is around $20,000 USD a year. We also have a small store that sells solidarity products produced by collectives and local communities in resistance. Our income is normally enough to provide small stipends to each of the members of the collective, pay rent and utilities. However, it is not enough to buy a permanent home for our project. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Could you support us with a donation LINK and sharing this letter with your colleagues, students and friends to help El Cambalache keep our home and continue sharing, learning and acting through decolonial practice? Any size donation is a huge help. If you would be interested in collaborating with us to strengthen our networks and build this movement please get in touch. If you would be interested in joining our community, we have set up a Patreon site LINK where we will run monthly conversations around decolonial practice. Please help us support this movement towards decolonization so that we, as a community, can continue creating and supporting knowledge and practices around all of the beauty and complexity that is most of the world. We thank you from the heart of El Cambalache for all of your support. El Cambalache, the Swap in English, is a space for moneyless exchanges of all different kinds. We believe that each person has a great deal to exchange, teach and share. In Chiapas most women have very low access to money but our riches lie within our hearts and minds. The project provides a space where people exchange all different kinds of things- clothing, shoes, cell phones, computers, tools, construction materials, movies, cooking appliances, jewelry, self care items, and much, much more. People also exchange knowledge through workshops on- embroidery, electrical repair, permaculture, cooking, yoga and exercise, computer repair, clothing repair, gynecology and lactation, herbal medicine, fermenting, design, chess classes, language classes, and so much more. One year ago we began a library and we have been collecting books for our community. Our project also regularly supports individuals and communities in crises such as forced displacement, natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, fires), domestic violence and pandemic relief through donations of food, clothing, mattress, medicines and we maintain a place to stay for people in need. Our work is local. Women are mostly responsible for clothing, feeding, caring for and ensuring the education of our families. However, with low access to money, racism, and oppression many women find themselves in desperate situations on a day to day basis. By creating a space for moneyless exchanges and decreasing people’s dependance on money people raise their quality of life from the first day that they participate in El Cambalache. We have spent the last seven years building community connections, supporting each other, and strengthening networks across our city and region. People all over the city of San Cristobal de las Casas visit our project and the beautiful space where we do our work. Our project is international. Through the Department of Decolonial Economics we have shared practices and ideas about how to start similar projects with people from every continent except Antartica. All donations will go to purchasing our home and the urgently needed renovations that the current owners have negated to do. If we are able to raise $500,000 we will also begin the purchase and construction of our dream center for exchanging knowledge and practices so that we can host people from around the world to learn about how to create their own decolonial economies. Someone has done an inventory of the traditional knowledge of their community, the ethnic Nahua people in Mexico, and is interested in getting it published on- or off-line. Suggestions anyone please? __ Christian Stalberg Doctoral Student Anthropology & Social Change CIIS, San Francisco, CA "I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change.
