Interaction Records
by Mathieu ONeil 23 Oct '13

23 Oct '13

Hi all Hm, this sounds familiar (new project, not sure if genuwine reeal deal or a hoax)... "Interaction Records is the leading peer-commentary journal in the field of human-computer interaction. The current publication culture inhibits truly novel contributions. We therefore decided to start Interaction Records to make sure that your most original papers will get published and that they are being accompanied by peer commentaries. Papers submitted to Interaction Records must have been rejected by other publication channels at least three times. We will publish such articles together with the original reviews and a response from the authors." http://www.interaction-records.org/index.php/ir/index cheers Mathieu ps. Also checking to see if Maurizio is getting messages - can you please confirm offlist, thanks.

Advice page
by Mathieu ONeil 07 Oct '13

07 Oct '13

Hi all A while ago I agreed to implement Nate's suggestion that there should be an advice page on the website for special issue editors covering the whole process from CFP diffusion to release with of course a particular focus on Wordpress tips. Needless to say I have not done this yet (beyond setting up the page), but it will definitely happen, probably in the second half of October. Meanwhile if anyone who has edited an issue wishes to contribute their wisdom on any aspect of the process please send your thoughts. cheers Mathieu

CFP - Peer production, disruption and the law
by Mathieu ONeil 16 Sep '13

16 Sep '13

Special issue of the Journal of Peer Production Peer production, disruption and the law Editors: Steve Collins, Macquarie University and Angela Daly, Swinburne University of Technology The disruption caused by new technologies and non-conventional methods of organisation have posed challenges for the law, confronting regulators with the need to balance justice with powerful interests. Experience from the “disruptions” of the late 20th century has shown that the response from incumbent industries can lead to a period of intense litigation and lobbying for laws that will maintain the status quo. For example, following its “Napster moment”, the music industry fought to maintain its grip on distribution channels through increased copyright enforcement and the longer copyright terms it managed to extract from the legislative process. The newspaper industry has similarly seen its historical revenue stream of classified ads disrupted by more efficient online listings, and responded to its own failure to capitalise on online advertising by launching legal campaigns against Google News in various European countries. Though the law as it stands may not be well-equipped to deal with disruptive episodes, the technological innovations of the last twenty years have created an environment that generates disruption. The Internet, the Web and networked personal computers have converged into the ubiquitous post-PC media device, leaving twentieth century paradigms of production, consumption and distribution under considerable threat. The latest technology to be added to this group of disruptive innovations may be 3D-printing, which in recent times has become increasingly available and accessible to users in developed economies, whilst the manufacturing capacity of 3D-printers has dramatically grown. Although current offerings on the market are far from a Star Trek-like “replicator”, the spectre of disruption has once again arrived, with the prospect of 3D-printed guns inspiring a moral panic and raising questions of gun control, regulation, jurisdiction and effective control. In addition, 3D-printing raises a number of issues regarding intellectual property, going far beyond the copyright problems that file-sharing brought about due to its production of physical objects. This special issue of the Journal of Peer Production calls for papers that deal with the intersection of peer production, disruptive technologies and the law. Potential topics include, but are not restricted to: The threat posed by peer production to legacy industries The regulation of disruptive technologies through the rule of law or embedded rights management Lobbying strategies of incumbent players to stymie disruptive technologies Emergent economies or practices as a result of disruptive technologies Extra-legal norm formation in peer production communities around disruptive technologies Historical perspectives on the legal status of collaborative projects Critical legal approaches to technology, disruption and peer production The role and ability of the law (which differs across jurisdictions) in regulating autonomous production The resilience of law in the face of social and technological change The theories and assumptions which continue to underpin laws rendered obsolete by social and technological change 500-word abstracts are due by 15th November 2013 and should be sent to disruptlawissue(a)peerproduction.net. Accepted submissions will be notified during December 2013 and full papers (approximately between 4,000 and 10,000 words) are due by 12th May 2014. All article submissions are peer reviewed according to JoPP review policies.

JoPP "project" page: surveys & translations
by Mathieu ONeil 02 Sep '13

02 Sep '13

Hi all As was discussed in the past there are some projects connected to JoPP that should be mentioned on the site. To this end I created a new "projects" menu which at this point has two subpages: 1. surveys @Jarkko: could you please populate this page with a description of your "Surveys of P2P projects" project as well as link(s) to relevant pages on your website. Thanks. 2. translations @Jakob: could you please post the list any links to non-English language translations of your JoPP article. Thanks. @Nicolas: a few months ago you indicated on this list that you were proposing to translate some of our articles into Spanish https://lists.ourproject.org/pipermail/jopp-public/2013-March/000127.html Could you please advise us if that has been done and if yes, what are the articles and URLs? Thanks. cheers, Mathieu

by Mathieu ONeil 01 Sep '13

01 Sep '13

Hi all I am delighted to sponsor a (pardon the cringe) very special new member of our editorial board, Stefano Zacchiroli. Stefano was until recently project leader for the legendary FOSS distribution, Debian, which is as we speak celebrating its 20th anniversary! Stefano, over to you: thanks for briefly presenting yourself, your research interests and your intended contribution to the journal. cheers, Mathieu

Thingiverse analysis [was: RE: JoPP-Public Digest, Vol 18, Issue 7]
by Mathieu ONeil 21 Aug '13

21 Aug '13

Hi Jarkko, Johan, I agree that work can improve if you bounce off another but this is not my area so must regretfully decline. If you want to work on licenses then a natural home for the paper could be the upcoming JoPP 'law and disruption' issue (official CFP will be released mid-Spetember)? cheers Mathieu ps. Sorry for being a thread fascist but its clearer if we keep the same title.. -- **** ________________________________________ From: jopp-public-bounces(a)lists.ourproject.org [jopp-public-bounces(a)lists.ourproject.org] on behalf of Johan Söderberg [johan.soderberg(a)sts.gu.se] Sent: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 23:59 To: jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] JoPP-Public Digest, Vol 18, Issue 7 That is a great initiative, Jarkko! I would have jumped on your proposal to co-write, had it not been for that I am trying to get into a new research field, and what keeps me from getting there is my previous engagement in the 3D printing scene. So I am writing just to complement your list of alternative repositories to Thingiverse. Already back in 2010, a challenger to Thingiverse was started by Peter Sunde, the forerunner of The Pirate Bay, called The Product Bay. I dont know for how long it was in up and running, probably not for very long, but maybe it left a trace in the way-back machine. Though before the launch of Replicator 2 and before the patent held by Bre Pettis et al had been revealed, there was a small controversy over the license scheme of Thingiverse, which, at the time, among other things, forbade deep-linking to the content of the site (presumably to protect future advertising revenue) despite the openness of that user-generated content. So what came after had been long in preparation. /Johan ________________________________________ Från: jopp-public-bounces(a)lists.ourproject.org [jopp-public-bounces(a)lists.ourproject.org] för jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org [jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org] Skickat: den 21 augusti 2013 12:00 Till: jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org Ämne: JoPP-Public Digest, Vol 18, Issue 7 Send JoPP-Public mailing list submissions to jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/jopp-public or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org You can reach the person managing the list at jopp-public-owner(a)lists.ourproject.org When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of JoPP-Public digest..." Looking for co-author - Thingiverse analysis (Jarkko Moilanen) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2013 15:57:16 +0300 From: "Jarkko Moilanen" <jarkko.moilanen(a)uta.fi> Subject: [JoPP-Public] Looking for co-author - Thingiverse analysis To: jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org Message-ID: <1377003436.4746.33.camel@kyyberi> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" [apologies if this not the right forum] Hi, This might sound a bit awkward later on. I have gathered metadata from about 117k Thingiverse.com models. Here's some graphs that I've pulled from the data: http://ossoil.com/thingiverse In my experience writing together with another scholar results always to better outcome. This time I thought to try this forum :) Therefore I'm looking for someone who might be interested about the same topics - in this case 3D modelling community & licenses used - and who would like to co-author an article about the results that have already been found and what else (ideas welcome) could be found. About the article: 3D Printing is still a hot topic. More 3D printers are being developed which can be seen for example in the amount of Kickstarter 3D printer projects. Having an opportunity to use 3D printer is not enough though. Digital 3D models are needed too and sharing the models is said to be common among the community members. For long time Thingiverse has been the de facto service to store digital 3D models for others to use. According to Wikipedia Thingiverse.com "is a website dedicated to the sharing of user-created digital design files." It is said to be "the most widely used 3D model repositories in the Maker community". Some say that "Thingverse is built on the concept of giving back. In other words, as a responsible community member, you should not only download models but also upload and share your creations to repay the community". Other digital 3d model sharing services Yet, not all share the same positive image of Thingiverse, which is mostly due to issues that has been tangled around Replicator2 and Terms of Use for Thingiverse. What connects the two items (Replicator2 and Thingiverse) is that both were owned by same company, Makerbot Industries, before it was acquired by 3D Printing industry giant Stratasys in June 2013. The topics were so hot that even a 'occupy' movement was born and some took their 3D models down from Thingiverse.com. Around the same time, an alternative for thingiverse was born. It is based on GitHub and is labelled as githubiverse described by Gary Hodgson. Another alternative candidate for thingiverse is cubehero.com. Neither githubiverse or cubehero.com seem to be popular. Their impact, if none, on digital 3D model sharing remains to be seen. Inspired by the discussions about the future of Thingiverse and other activities around the topic, I decided to do some analysis on 'things' in Thingiverse.com. Is it really about sharing? What kind of licenses are used? .... -- Jarkko Moilanen, M.Soc.Sc PhD Candidate School of Information Sciences http://www.uta.fi/sis/en/index.html Blog: http://blog.ossoil.com ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ JoPP-Public mailing list JoPP-Public(a)lists.ourproject.org JoPP: http://www.peerproduction.org End of JoPP-Public Digest, Vol 18, Issue 7 ****************************************** _______________________________________________ JoPP-Public mailing list JoPP-Public(a)lists.ourproject.org https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/jopp-public
