Updates about JoPP special issue on Feminism and (Un)hacking
by sophie toupin 27 Sep '15

Dear all, I hope this email finds you well. I would like to briefly update you on where we are at with the Special Issue on Feminism and (Un)hacking and some of the thought provoking reflection we are having with this issue currently. At a more mundane level, we are pleased to inform you that the first round of peer review has been completed and we should start the second round in May. So all is good on that front. On a more thought provoking aspect, we have been pondering for quite some time now on how to handle the order of editors. So far in our communication we have been using a standard alphabetical order. Lilly in our group suggested to create a pen name out of our three names to have a single editor for the Special Issue. The idea of a pen-name is inspired in part by the work of radical feminist geographers J.K. Gibson-Graham who did just that a few years ago. We all feel our special issue is perfect for such experimentation as it is a hack on the academic publishing system and the hierarchical order it imposes on researchers. Our introductory article to the Special Issue will probably begin with an explanation of our own contribution to feminist hacking: That is a “HowTo” on how to hack academic standards and traditions from a feminist and queer perspective, while giving equal recognition to all for their work. Also, we feel that the choice of a pen-name does not erase our identities as individuals, but rather aim at questioning and initiating a discussion about the nature of work, scholarship, expertise, and authority from a feminist and queer framework. We are all super enthusiastic about the idea of resisting the traditional authorship structure in our special issue. We hope you will be as excited as we are about this experimentation. Very best, SSL Nagbot (SSL= Secure Sockets Layer, or if you prefer, Shaowen, Sophie, Lilly)

Well, it was never meant to be officially entitled so :-) Most importantly, the goal from the very beginning was to discuss the application of policies for the commons - and the principles underlying them - as something that extends well beyond any one country. -G. > (2) I am part of a COST action on the "dynamics of virtual work" ( > http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.com/) -- I'd like to promote the "Peer > production and paid labour" issue with Stefano Zacchiroli and Phoebe Moore > in that group (there is a meeting 3-5 June to put that on the radar); so it > would be perfect to have that call ready before 3 June > > Best / Peter > _______________________________________________ > JoPP-Public mailing list > JoPP-Public(a)lists.ourproject.org > https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/jopp-public >

JoPP update - May 2015
by Mathieu ONeil 19 May '15

19 May '15

Hi all Some news on the JoPP-front. *upcoming releases* After a lot of discussion between the special issue editors and the editorial team, it was decided that the issue on the "Ecuadorian experiment" (aka FLOK society) would come out as a regular issue, titled "Policy proposals for a Society of the Commons" or, in short, "Policies for the Commons". Since all their papers are ready and being copy-edited, they will start uploading them soon, and will come out as JoPP#7 in June. The issue on Feminism and (un)hacking will come out as JoPP#8 and will be released end of August. Both will be dated July 2015. JoPP#9 on Alternative Internets is scheduled for release in January 2016. *releasing two issues* We already released two issues close together (1 and 2) and it reinforced the notion that JoPP was a hive of productive activity. In addition FLOK and Feminism and (un)hacking are very different issues? so there is no risk of overlap. *copy editor* Bryan Hugill has offered to copy-edit JoPP. He has been the primary copy editor for the Asian Journal of Social Science for a number of years, and has copy-edited academic papers and theses. He also has a background in ecology and agriculture, and runs his own organic farm/business in Thailand. ?He has worked on the FLOK issue at short notice and seems to be great. Thank you Bryan! *new JoPP board members* Any JoPP board member can sponsor a new board member, who must be able to point to a publicly available record of research. Sponsored board members are invited to present their research interests and intended contribution to the journal to this list. If a week passes after being sponsored and no-one has objected, they are welcomed aboard. Board members are expected to review two papers a year (if called on to do so), and to take part in debates on this list.? Please do not hesitate to sponsor people who you think might like to contribute. *future issues* I have been working on putting together a CFP for an issue on "Peer production and paid labour" with Stefano Zacchiroli and Phoebe Moore (who I will propose as a new board member). CFP will go out in May/June 2015. The issue is meant to be released in July 2016. There is nothing planned after... ideas welcome! :-) cheers, Mathieu (on behalf of the editorial team)

[Pdworld] Serious Fun - Aarhus 2015 Workshop - Call for Participation
by David Hakken 14 May '15

14 May '15

Dear all, Apologies for cross-posting this reminder. We want to invite you to join our workshop at the next Aarhus 2015 Conference on Critical Alternatives (17-21 August 2015). Best Mauri --- Serious Fun: Designing a Game to Promote Critical Computing Practices Beyond Capital A workshop at Aarhus 2015 Conference on Critical Alternatives (August, 17-21) Many of us grew up playing a game called Monopoly—it was about property, and winning other people’s money and land. But is that really the world we want? What if there were a different game? The original version of the game that became Monopoly was designed to reward very different behavior. Its aim was to be critique of capital. The creator, Elizabeth Magie Philips, called it The Landlord’s Game. Like Ms. Philips, we want a different game, one that will reward a different set of alternative, critical values. So, we need to articulate the different values that we want to inform our future. Toward which values would we re-orient what motivates future societies? How would we institutionalize these values in our future world? What kinds of practices and relationships will they encourage? If these values were to motivate people in a game, what would the game look like? At the Conference on Critical Alternatives, we want to make a different game—and we hope you will help create it. More information at http://computing-beyond-capital.ghost.io/ <http://computing-beyond-capital.ghost.io/> How to participate The workshop starts with a matter of fact: that contemporary societies are struggling to cope with the ongoing economic crisis and with the social problems caused by a crisis of capitalism itself. This fact suggests we need to articulate critical alternatives to capital in all aspects of social life. While computing professionals were in many ways responsible for the crisis, computing practices like Free Software and Participatory Design are also suggestive of alternative values. By building on these alternatives, people who compute can contribute to creating an alternative future. The Landlord’s Game was a critique of capitalism. With this inspiration, the workshop will identify key values and practices able to sustain the emergence of “beyond capital” computing alternatives. For example, real properties in Monopoly might be reversed into commons promoted by alternative computing practices, and groups of alternative institutions (like the groups of real properties in Monopoly). Creating a game could create the vision of ways of living “beyond capital. The workshop will build upon a group discussion of suggestions from participants about the appropriate set of values promoting critical alternatives, as articulated in papers (maximum 1000 words). In these papers, participants will make an argument for the inclusion of three values they think central for a future society, define these values, and describe their relations to actual computing practices. Group-work will then focus on how pursuit of these computing-related values can be built into institutions, and thus how they can be embodied in “chance” game activities. At the end of the workshop the game ideas will be combined in a mock-up of a Beyond Capital, forward-looking board game. If you want to participate please send a paper with ideas about new values (maximum 1000 words) to the workshop organizers at the email address beyondcapital(a)openmailbox.org Important dates: Deadline for position paper submission (max 1000 words): May 22nd. Notification to authors: June 7th. Deadline for early registration to the conference: June 25th. --- Maurizio Teli, PhD Research Fellow Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science University of Trento, Italy phone: +39 335 6148320 skype: maurizio.teli _______________________________________________ Pdworld mailing list Pdworld(a)listserv.uni-siegen.de https://listserv.uni-siegen.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pdworld

"Radical open access"
by Mathieu ONeil 12 May '15

12 May '15

Hi all Well well, look what popped up today... As far as I can tell the conference blurb (pasted below) does not discuss making things open or free in relation to the critique of commodities but I guess you can't have everything. ;-) cheers Mathieu PS. Nate Tkacz will be presenting in a panel on "Open': Alternative Genealogies?" ?=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "While open access has at long last entered the mainstream in the global West and North, it is a particular version of open access that is being taken up so widely. Open access is currently being positioned and promoted by policy makers, funders and commercial publishers alike primarily as a means of serving the knowledge economy and helping to stimulate market competition. This version has become so dominant that even those on the left of the political spectrum who are critical of open access are presenting it in much the same terms: as merely assisting with the ongoing process of privatising knowledge, research and the university. Rather than 'working with the grain' of neoliberalism's co-option of open access, the Radical Open Access conference will reclaim it by asking: what is the potential for supporting and taking further some of the different, more intellectually and politically exciting, ways of understanding open access that are currently available internationally? A particular emphasis will be placed on those that have emerged in recent years, in the arts, humanities and social sciences especially. Radical Open Access will thus provide the impetus for bringing together many of those currently involved in experimenting with 'alternative' forms of open access: both to discuss the long, multifaceted critical tradition of open access, its history and genealogies; and to examine a broad range of radical open access models. As part of its refusal to concede open access, the conference will endeavour to strengthen alliances between the open access movement and other struggles concerned with the right to access, copy, distribute, sell and (re)use artistic, literary, cultural and academic research works and other materials (FLOSS, p2p, internet piracy etc.); and to stimulate the creation of a network of publishers, theorists, scholars, librarians, technology specialists, activists and others, from different fields and backgrounds, both inside and outside of the university. In particular, the conference will explore a vision of open access that is characterised by a spirit of on-going creative experimentation, and a willingness to subject some of our most established scholarly communication and publishing practices, together with the institutions that sustain them (the library, publishing house etc.), to rigorous critique. Included in the latter will be the asking of important questions about our notions of authorship, authority, originality, quality, credibility, sustainability, intellectual property, fixity and the book - questions that lie at the heart of what scholarship is and what the university can be in the 21st century."
