Hola! I hope of interest of people in this list. In solidarity, Mayo English - Català - Castellano Commons Collaborative Economies: Policies, Technologies and City for an economy of the People An encounter which aims to highlight the relevance of the commons-oriented approach of peer production and collaborative economy, while proposing public policies and providing technical guidelines to build platforms for collaborative communities. www.procomuns.net<http://www.procomuns.net> Contact: <mailto:[email protected]> info(a)dimmons.net<mailto:[email protected]> WHEN & WHERE During the weekend of March 12-13th, 2016, with a locally-oriented event taking place on Friday, March 11th, 2016. Barcelona Activa<http://www.barcelonactiva.cat/> (Carrer Llacuna, 162 -164, 08018 Barcelona) GOALS 1. Highlight the relevance of the commons-oriented model within the collaborative economy, and project internationally the relevance of commons – oriented production in Barcelona and Catalonia. 2. Build policy recommendations for public administrations, specifically to be sent to the Plan of Municipal Action (PAM) for the next 4 years of the Barcelona City Council, and the consultation process of the European Commission, on public policies of promotion and regulation of the collaborative economy and the model of city. 3. Provide technical guidelines to build free and open software and decentralized technologies for collaborative communities. ORGANIZERS The is organized by Barcelona Activa – Department of “Other Economies and proximity” with the BarCola – Node on collaborative economy and commons production in Barcelona (associated to the Social and Solidarian Economy Commission of the Barcelona City Council), and the P2Pvalue European project<http://www.p2pvalue.eu/> (locally by Dimmons<http://www.dimmons.net/>– Digital Commons Research at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute of the Open University of Catalonia (Dimmons.net @ IN3-UOC) and the Institute of Govern and Public Policies of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (IGOPnet.cc<http://igopnet.cc/> @ UAB). Organizers collaborators of the event are Guifi.net<https://guifi.net/>, Goteo<https://ca.goteo.org/>, Pangea<https://pangea.org/>, Free Knowledge Institute (with the Digital DIY project<http://www.didiy.eu/>), the Reutilitza.cat<https://www.reutilitza.cat/en> and eReuse.org<http://www.ereuse.org/en/> projects, Amical Viquipedia<https://www.wikimedia.cat/>, and OuiShare<http://ouishare.net/>, among others. DEPARTING DIAGNOSTIC AND DIRECTION In the last two decades we have seen the emergence of Internet-enabled collaborative communities building shared and common resources. Commons-based Peer Production is rapidly growing, not just for the disruptive and very successful cases of software (with free and open software) and encyclopedias (Wikipedia) but also for information (OpenStreetMap, Wikihow), hardware (FabLabs, Open Source Ecology), accommodation (Couchsurfing) and currency (local coins). More recently, we have also seen the emergence and growth of hybrid models which retain some similar organizational logic, such as being based on collaborative principles, but privatizing others. This is the case in corporate-based peer production such as Uber or Airbnb. Are they truly collaborative economies?. This issue opens up a series of debates and opportunities about how to retain the commons and socially transformative dimension in the collaborative economy through the recognition of the distinctive values of these modes of production, beyond value approaches which focus on monetization, and new forms of open/peer/platform cooperativism. However, public debate mainly focuses on the controversies around large corporations entering the collaborative economy. Thus, the public is mostly aware of peer production through these few large corporations. There is a growing need to organize and raise the visibility of the commons and socially-oriented model, and to address which are the conditions that should be present in order to characterise an economy or enterprise as “collaborative”. Additionally, recent technological developments, such as emergent blockchain technologies, have opened up new avenues of commons production, management and distribution through more decentralized governance structures, which also open up very promising avenues for the evolution of the collaborative economy. The more important commons-based peer production becomes, the more that controversies emerge, attracting the interest of public administrations. Still, it remains largely unclear what the role of public administrations might be, which Public-Commons partnerships could be established, and what policy approach could be the most productive and beneficial. The event main goal is to highlight the relevance of the commons-oriented model within the collaborative economy, and build policy and technical resources to promote its scalability. The encounter will mix plenaries with unconference / open space working groups to achieve the targeted outcomes. Participants will have the chance to suggest other activities. Antecedents The event will follow up on the previous workshop FLOSS4P2P<http://www.p2pvalue.eu/floss4p2p-workshop-agenda>, organized by the P2Pvalue<http://www.p2pvalue.eu/> european project, this time expanding the focus to policy. It will provide an opportunity for policy people to interact with the technical teams of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) platforms for commons-based peer production communities, and to get a “deep dive” into how to promote the commons approach to collaborative economy from institutions. DIAGNOSTIC I DIRECCIO Les últimes dues dècades hem comprovat com gràcies a Internet sorgien comunitats col·laboratives i noves possibilitats d’utilitzar recursos comuns. CFP: DIGITAL FABRICATIONS AMONGST HACKERS, MAKERS AND MANUFACTURERS: WHOSE ‘INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION’? (4S Barcelona) We invite abstracts for a track we are organising on the theme of digital fabrications amongst hackers, makers and manufacturers, and which will take place in Barcelona over August 31 to September 3 as part of the international conference of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) and the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S). Abstracts can be submitted at this link: http://www.nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst_4s2016/panels.php5?PanelID=3870 More details below. Thanks, Johan Söderberg, Maxigas, Adrian Smith * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Our track brings critical analysis to the plurality of collectives, spaces and futures that are assembling around increasingly accessible digital design and fabrication technologies. Computer integrated tools hold particular historical ironies and contradictions: early introduction threatened skills, livelihoods and identities amongst manufacturing communities – while they are celebrated today as enabling agency, identities and communities for makers. Both processes has been promoted as ’Industrial Revolutions’. STS has much to contribute to understanding, engaging and bridging digital fabrications. Conversely, apparent historical turnarounds in digital fabrication, with tools spilling into new collectives and spaces, offers an opportunity to interrogate STS theory and methodology. Fifty years ago, social ecologist Murray Bookchin, like other commentators welcomed a future in which collectives would own tools and organise production non-hierarchically around ‘liberatory technologies’. Does grassroots appropriation of digital fabrication in hackerspaces, makerspaces and amongst user groups online, mean his future for egalitarian tool-based creativity arrived? Or do digital fabrication futures reinforce the automation, flexible specialisation, and globalised outsourcing documented by David Noble in the 1980s, and that has been a driver for the technology amongst manufacturing strategists since then? How do the collectives and spaces pursuing these different futures intersect, contest, and co-exist? In analysing digital fabrications, we are particularly interested in the critical voices posing unsettling questions: * Who controls the platforms underpinning these activities and their connections, and how does this influence the spaces for peer production, and the terms for private appropriation? * What senses of humanity are invigorated, and which excluded, from the political imaginaries, utopias, dystopias, and ideologies embodied in digital fabrication technologies? * How does the materiality of digital fabrications connect to the values of sustainable developments? * Where does the figure of the hacker – forever opening-up technologies – lurk in these collectives and spaces; and what has hacker culture mobilised and been appropriated by these collectives? * When and where will future industrial conflicts arise: what are the political and economic relations at stake between these collectives, spaces and futures? We welcome papers that provide critical reviews, original empirical study, and theoretical development relevant to digital fabrications. -- maxigas, kiberpunk FA00 8129 13E9 2617 C614 0901 7879 63BC 287E D166 http://research.metatron.ai/ In Solidarity with Library Genesis and Sci-hub http://custodians.online Share this letter - read it in public - leave it in the printer.
