CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw EASST 2018, 25-28th July 2018, Lancaster University, UK Convenors: Johan Söderberg (Göteborg University) Maxigas (Lancaster University) Deadline for submissions: February 14th 2018. Submit abstracts and contact the conveners at: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6286 We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our panel at EASST 2018 The panel investigates innovation processes driven by antagonistic relations between actors on both sides of the law. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. We encourage paper submissions utilizing diverse theoretical approaches and a wide range of case studies to explore the concept of the "outlaw innovator".

CFP: EASST 2018 Panel "Situating designs", Discussant: Alex Wilkie

**** apologies for cross-posting / please circulate this announcement widely **** Dear all, We welcome paper proposals for a panel on the situatedness of design practices and artefacts at EASST 2018 “Meetings - Making Science, Technology and Society Together” <https://easst2018.easst.net/home/>, 25-28th July 2018 in Lancaster University, UK. (B07) Situating designs Discussant: Alex Wilkie (Goldsmiths, University of London) Convenors: Peter Fuzesi (Lancaster University) p.fuzesi(a)lancaster.ac.uk <mailto:[email protected]>; Yana Boeva (York University, Toronto) yaboeva(a)yorku.ca <mailto:[email protected]>; Design, at the heart of creating new technologies, has a predominant existence and influence outside the theoretical framework of research as a professional practice. A plethora of practices identify as design. These range from traditional product design over design engineering to more recent conversions in UX/UI or design thinking. Simultaneously, the boundaries of design have become porous; research in the social sciences discloses that design is also practiced by those avoiding the term. Newer approaches at the intersections of design and STS, such as craft (Rosner & Fox, 2016; Pérez Bustos, 2017), critical technical practice (Agre, 1997; Boehner et al., 2005), hacking (Söderberg and Delfanti, 2015), repair and fixing (Denis and Pontille, 2014; Jackson, 2014), offer unconventional reconfigurations of both technological expertise and socio-political worlds. This diversity of locations and approaches makes it difficult to provide a definition what design means—something even design research has been struggling with. Rather than seeking a substantive definition, this panel makes an inquiry into the location, circulation, presences and absences of design practices. Part of this challenge to situate design, is articulating the geographical, organisational, discursive and material arrangements that converge at sites, where design is practiced and reflexively delineated. We welcome both theoretical contributions and practical case studies that follow along dialogues on what design means for design, STS, and beyond. To submit a paper please go to the panel website: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6280 <https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6280> Submissions should include: a paper title, a short abstract of max. 300 characters, and a long abstract of max. 250 words. The call for papers closes at midnight CET on February 14, 2018 (23:59 CEU). Best wishes, Peter & Yana Yana Boeva PhD Candidate Science and Technology Studies York University, Toronto Asst. CFP 4S 2018 - Open Panel: STS as method? (Meta)dimensions of the STS (trans)nations
by Martin Perez Comisso 06 Jan '18

06 Jan '18

Hello, I'm sharing this Call for Papers for a Open Panel 4S 2018 (Sydney, Australia, 29 August to 1 September 2018). A spanish translation is below. Please, share with researchers interested on this topic Best Regards, -- STS as method? (Meta)dimensions of the STS (trans)nationsConvenors: Martin Perez Comisso & Joshua Loughman Arizona State University; ENG Summary: Methodologies are a relevant question for Science and Technology Studies. As a transdisciplinary field, the codes and practices that researchers engage in with their own practices are diverse and plural. For a long time this question was tangentially discussed, giving an open space to creation and experimentation. But, in the fourth Handbook of STS (Felt, Fouche, Miller and Smith-Doerr, 2017), the editors focus on the field’s methods for first time. John Law (2017) introduces in the first essay the idea of STS as a method, looking in several dimensions of our own practices as case studies, rooted in the history of Science and Technology, trying to differentiate national and disciplinary traditions and influences. This panel extends this discussion and explores how we understand these methods (and others). Considering ourselves members of different ‘nations’ of researchers, we reflect on how the coexistence of diversity, for different nationalities and epistemic cultures and trajectories (Knorr Cetina, 1995), configures expressions about utility, reliability, participation, and hegemony that keep open to conversation and research about these scholarly practices for STS. Is STS a single method, as Law indicates? What are our present methods? Are all the methods situated in their countries and cultures? Who are the ‘nations’ in these methods? Where are the boundaries to ‘hidden’ methods? What is the future of these methods? We expect the panel to embrace these questions and to unravel, a bit, the questions that the focus on method(s) offers. *Fecha límite: 1 de febrero de 2018Presentaciones: https://4s2018sydney.org/call-for-papers-open-panels/ <https://4s2018sydney.org/call-for-papers-open-panels/>Más información: https://4s2018sydney.org <https://4s2018sydney.org>* -- Martín Pérez Comisso / @mapc <https://twitter.com/mapc> PhD student, Human and Social Dimension of Science and Technolgy SFIS 土龍 Oscillating from 1988 http://about.me/mapc / +56 9 7-7548114 (CL)

CfP Technologies and Improvisation, Conference 7-9 feb 2018, Göteborg
by Johan Söderberg 02 Jan '18

CALL FOR PAPERS: Technologies and Improvisation: Tools and theories for uncertain futures Nordic Summer University Ad Hoc Symposium February 7-9, 2018, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Hosted by the Cybioses: Shaping Human-Technology Futures Group of the Nordic Summer University, together with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, at University of Gothenburg. We invite scholars, artists, technologists and other professionals working or writing on future technologies to take part in our first Nordic Summer University symposium. The aim of the symposium is to bring together theorists, designers and technologists. Together we want to discuss practices of making and the social and cultural impact of future technologies. How can philosophical questions support the development of technologies? How in turn can technological practices and development inform philosophical and sociological theories? And how can both making and theorizing help us imagining future technologies and their impact on societies? Guided by these questions we want to develop a philosophy for makers and a better practice for philosophy. Our first symposium investigates the role of improvisation in technological development and philosophy. As technologists and theorists, we improvise when we don’t know how to continue. We improvise when we move in unknown territory or when time does not allow for a systemic investigation. And yet, improvisation follows patterns. Is there is good and bad improvisation, and good and bad improvisers? What role does improvisation play in the development of technologies? How can technologies improve improvisation? And what can different practices and theories of improvisation tell us about future technologies? We explicitly want to foster exchange between humanities-based researchers, makers and artists. The interdisciplinary discussion of technological futures has yet to find its forms within and outside of academia. Our aim is, therefore, to test different forms of presentation. We encourage participants to briefly present one particular technology or one particular theory about a technology. The individual presentations will be complemented with open discussion rounds and documentation rounds. The focus on brief showcases, together with the small format of the workshop allows for extended and deep discussions, and prevents endless boring paper sessions. Topics we hope to discuss during the symposium include: • philosophy of improvisation • the relationship between technology and improvisation • designing for improvisation • improvisation, technology and survival • technology and improvisation in conflict and crisis management • improvisation in design • design fictions • improvisation in previous futures (historical case studies) • cognition and improvisation • improvisation and AI • improvisation in engineering • prediction and improvisation in future studies • improvisation in the art world How to participate We are looking for brief technological and philosophical showcases limited to 20 minutes. You could either present a particular technology, particular theory or case study you are working on. To submit a proposal please send via email to the coordinators: Palle Dahlstedt: palle (dot) dahlstedt (at) gu (dot) se Rafael Dernbach: rkd32 (at) cam (dot) ac (dot) uk Johan Söderberg: johan (dot) soderberg (at) sts (dot) gu (dot) se 1. A written short proposal (max. 300 words) with a title 2. A short bio (max. 200 words) It is possible to attend the symposium without presenting. In this case, please just email a short bio. The deadline to submit proposals is January 5th, 2018. Notifications of accepted presentations will be sent before the preliminary program is announced on January 8th, 2018 on www.nordic.university. Registration and Fee Students, freelancers, unemployed: 30€ Those associated with institutions: 45€ This cost includes meals (lunches, coffee breaks, and conference dinner) as well as conference materials. Arrival: 7.2.2018 Departure: 9.2.2018 Scholarship A limited number of participants with low income (i.e. students and unemployed) can ask to have the fee waived. Subsidies are conditioned on available funds. A limited number of free accommodations in private homes are also available. Please mention in your application, if you want to be considered for a scholarship and/or private accommodation, together with a motivation. The Nordic Summer University (NSU) is a Nordic network for research and interdisciplinary studies. NSU is a nomadic, academic institution, which organises workshop-seminars across disciplinary and national borders. Since it was established in 1950, Nordic Summer University has organised forums for cultural and intellectual debate in the Nordic and Baltic region, involving students, academics, politicians, and intellectuals from this region and beyond. Decisions about the content and the organisational form of the NSU lay with its participants. The backbone of the activities in the NSU consists of its thematic study circles. In the study circles researchers, students and professionals from different backgrounds collaborate in scholarly investigations distributed regularly in summer and winter symposia during a three-year period.
