Hi all SSRN is being acquired by Elsevier... Reminds me of the discussions we had a few years ago about creating a distributed alternative to academia.edu. Too much work. I don't have much on SSRN but was planning (some day) to migrate all my publications from academia which I sort of got sucked into because of its ease of use etc - now I'm not so sure. cheers Mathieu ________________________________ From: Michael C. Jensen <admin(a)ssrn.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2016 20:12 To: Mathieu ONeil Subject: Message from Mike Jensen, SSRN Chairman [http://papers.ssrn.com/Organizations/images/ihp_ssrnlogo.png]<http://hq.ssrn.com/GroupProcesses/RedirectClick.cfm?partid=2319822&corid=40…> Dear SSRN Authors, SSRN announced today that it has changed ownership. SSRN is joining Mendeley<https://www.mendeley.com/?signout> and Elsevier<https://www.elsevier.com> to coordinate our development and delivery of new products and services, and we look forward to our new access to data, products, and additional resources that this change facilitates. (See Gregg Gordon's Elsevier Connect<https://www.elsevier.com/connect/ssrn-the-leading-social-science-and-humani…> post) Like SSRN, Mendeley and Elsevier are focused on creating tools that enhance researcher workflow and productivity. SSRN has been at the forefront of on-line sharing of working papers. We are committed to continue our innovation and this change will enable that to happen more quickly. SSRN will benefit from access to the vast new data and resources available, including Mendeley's reference management and personal library management tools, their new researcher profile capabilities, and social networking features. Importantly, we will also have new access for SSRN members to authoritative performance measurement tools such as those powered by Scopus<https://www.elsevier.com/solutions/scopus> and Newsflo<http://hq.ssrn.com/GroupProcesses/RedirectClick.cfm?partid=2319822&corid=40…> (a global media tracking tool). In addition, SSRN, Mendeley and Elsevier together can cooperatively build bridges to close the divide between the previously separate worlds and workflows of working papers and published papers. We realize that this change may create some concerns about the intentions of a legacy publisher acquiring an open-access working paper repository. I shared this concern. But after much discussion about this matter and others in determining if Mendeley and Elsevier would be a good home for SSRN, I am convinced that they would be good stewards of our mission. And our copyright policies are not in conflict -- our policy has always been to host only papers that do not infringe on copyrights. I expect we will have some conflicts as we align our interests, but I believe those will be surmountable. Until recently I was convinced that the SSRN community was best served being a stand-alone entity. But in evaluating our future in the evolving landscape, I came to believe that SSRN would benefit from being more interconnected and with the resources available from a larger organization. For example, there is scale in systems administration and security, and SSRN can provide more value to users with access to more data and resources. On a personal note, it has been an honor to be involved over the past 25 years in the founding and growth of the SSRN website and the incredible community of authors, researchers and institutions that has made this all possible. I consider it one of my great accomplishments in life. The community would not have been successful without the commitment of so many of you who have contributed in so many ways. I am proud of the community we have created, and I invite you to continue your involvement and support in this effort. The staff at SSRN are all staying (including Gregg Gordon, CEO and myself), the Rochester office is still in place, it will still be free to upload and download papers, and we remain committed to "Tomorrow's Research Today". I look forward to and am committed to a successful transition and to another great 25 years for the SSRN community that rivals the first. Michael C. I hope of interest of people in this list, Mayo ENGLISH - CATALAN - SPANISH ENGLISH Launching of the Declaration for a commons collaborative economy: Public policies recommendations to promote commons oriented models of the collaborative economy We are please to announce the launching of version 0.3 of the Declaration for a commons collaborative economy. The Declaration aims first to highlight the importance to distinguish several models of collaborative economy -depending on the type of economy, technology and knowledge access that are based on- , as well as the relevance of a commons-oriented model within the collaborative economy. Second, to provide policy recommendations for the public administrations, generally, and specifically for the design process of regulatory guidelines engaged by the European Commission and Committee of Regions of the European Union. In this regard, the document provides more than 120 policies recommendations. The Declaration is the result of a process of co-creation of public policies which included several channels of online consultation and participation, and the debate at an international event that took place in Barcelona in March 2016, which gathered more than 400 experts, citizens and sector representatives, ending in this joint statement of public policies for the collaborative economy. Complete version: http://procomuns.net/en/policy/ Summary of Declaration for a commons collaborative economy: Public policies recommendations to promote the commons oriented models of the collaborative economy Collaboration means Economy Collaboration in achieving shared objectives and the provision of goods and services that meet the needs of the population and ensure a decent life is, or should be, the purpose of the economy. The adoption of new information technologies and communication has greatly reduced coordination and collaboration transaction costs, generating a universe of new opportunities. Commons as a third productive model Commons-based production is accomplished by communities who work for mutual and collective benefit under the principles of participation and shared governance, resulting in collective property and open access resources and services. Commons is a third model that breaks with the binomial market-state notion, formed -allegedly- by the only two organizational models able to meet the needs of the population; it aspires to have a more respectful balance between the conventional replication system and that of a caring social economy, as well as looking after the Environment. The most renowned and highly successful cases are Free Software (which dominates over proprietary software in many fields, including for example Internet servers) and Wikipedia (a global leader in free knowledge and online participation), which demonstrated that the commons model can succeed and have more presence than traditional proprietary economic models in sectors where it operates. Commons-based production is growing at a fast pace, expanding into many areas. What economy do we want? Extractive and privative collaborative economy vs social, solidarity and commons economies Recently, we have seen the emergence and growth of hybrid models that adopt the same ethos and present organizational rationales that are similar to the collaborative commons economic model, based on principles of collaboration, but which in turn -at the same time- privatize other aspects and layers (that are privately owned and which do not allow people who contribute to intervene in its governance model). This is the case of Uber and Airbnb, multinational corporations based in Silicon Valley, which behave in the style of the prevailing globalized capitalist economic model, based on extracting profits through networked collaboration. The collaborative economy has been on the one hand readapted to a deepening process of economic models, driven primarily by profit and speculation (Internet as the new bubble, like real estate in the past), creating severe inequalities and loss of rights, and on the other hand, it is a reality that allowed the principles of a cooperative, social and solidarity economy to ascend and gain centrality, with great potential for economic transformation and innovative solutions for social and political exclusion problems, as well as environmental sustainability. It is time to choose what type of collaborative economy -and in the end what kind of economy- we want. An economic model for a different economy: from privatization to “commonification” The commons collaborative economy also represents a different public policy model. Organizational commons models can be an inspiration for public administrations, becoming more efficient and making better use of public resources, as well as opening new channels for the participation and activation of civil society in solving common problems and public needs through commons-private partnerships. It is a way of moving from prevailing privatization -within the globalization crisis cycle- to "commonification", through the involvement of citizens and democratic institutions in the provision and production of public goods and services, without having to fall into a private framework or state re-centralization, but via the activation of citizenship. Now is the time for promoting public policies for changes towards a commons based collaborative economy Now is the time for administrations and governments to join and strengthen this type of collaborative economy, ignoring the one that is appropriating its name, taking action to stop the enclosure of knowledge and digital commons. Now is the time because the emerging role of cities and municipalities as operating systems of change is coming together, as well as the need to advance towards shared solutions against inequalities, participation in and with institutions, testing of new formulas in which economic activity is understood in a holistic way and at the service of the people. The collaborative commons economy: what are we talking about? Guiding principles The guiding principles of the collaborative commons economy approach, and the things we can do, therefore, in order to address the initiatives designed to promote and foster a collaborative economy (taking into account the different actors involved) would be: What kind of economy? * One that seeks to provide a service or resource that is economically sustainable, without putting profit above the purpose of service or entering into speculative dynamics. * One that recognizes beyond monetary value through governance procedures adopted to ensure the control of value generated by users and community members. * One in line with company procedures related to the cooperative, social and solidarity economy, such as cooperative tradition and the third sector (e.g. foundations representing the community). * One which is attentive and responsible for externalities generated, both in terms of environmental and social reproduction. * One that includes principles of equality and justice in the development and distribution of work, focusing on the welfare of people in the governance of the community. What kind of knowledge? * Open knowledge through the use of open licenses (such as Creative Commons licenses). One that seeks to promote access and reclaim the resources generated through public or collective ownership. What kind of technology? * Technology options that favor the transparency, participation and freedom of citizens, taxpayers and users. In this sense, one based on free software, open standards and if possible on decentralized architectures. >From the Barcola group (Barcelona Col·laborativa) and the collaborative peer production initiatives under its umbrella, informed by the research developed by the Dimmons.net group at IN3-UOC and the P2Pvalue European Project, in connection with the procomuns.net conference (March 2016 Barcelona, which had more than 400 participants), and as a result of an open parallel process of participation in the co-design of public policies, we propose this set of recommendations, followed by specific measures: General principles * Economic policy: To support SMEs following the rationale of a cooperative economy, social solidarity and the companies with production and consumption patterns which take care of the environment, social reproduction and which are inclusive. This means adapting business methods and the role of the citizen as a producer in the collaborative commons economy . * Technology policy: To support free and decentralized technologies. * Political knowledge and innovation: To support open knowledge and ensure that innovation is funded by public funds available under free licenses. * Public policy (public administration / public services): To encourage the creation of partnerships between public administrations and the collaborative commons economy, within the strategy to move from privatization to "commonification". Among more than 120 proposals generated, these 10 measures below are an example of the ones with more support from participants at the procomuns.net event, which were prioritized and subsequently joined an extensive collection of policies in a working document which is available here <http://procomuns.net/en/policy/> <http://procomuns.net/en/policy/> http://procomuns.net/en/policy/ 1. Improving regulations for a commons collaborative economy: Explore new forms of legislation on legal / economic subjects, beyond multinational profit models, that promote participatory governance, a social mission and / or environmental sustainability. 2. Promote the incubation of new projects and initiatives in the collaborative commons economy: Create an incubator with physical and technological infrastructure designed for commons, and facilitate access to resources for collective commons entrepreneurship, which -apart from the positive social impact- would promote viable projects meeting the criteria of openness, reusability, transparency, etc. 3. Promote existing formulas or enhance new ones for financing commons initiatives: Create a call to fund innovative pilot projects co-financed by a match-funding model, which in turn creates a “pool” for projects with commons criteria, ultimately combining individual crowdfunding with seed funding, which multiplies each citizen’s input. 4. Adopting or reassigning the use of spaces and other public infrastructures for this sector: Enable joint management of workspaces and empty premises for the work and development of collaborative commons production projects, facilitating mobility and the sharing and promotion of sector professionals and stakeholders. 5. Change how public administrations operate internally on some fronts linked to commons: Conduct a pilot scheme in which public bodies and governments use community actors or services as commons companies, such as guifi.net infrastructures for digital communication. 6. Combat malpractice and corruption in government policy in the field of technology and knowledge: Mandatory registration of meetings and contacts with lobbyists and lobbyists representing the economic interests of large telecommunications and technology services corporations. 7. Assist in promoting cities and neighbourhoods in order to bring their economies and other related sectors closer: To promote a network of open manufacturing spaces, such as FabLabs, makerspaces, libraries, community centers and other municipal bodies or educational programs with municipal participation, focusing on economic recovery, reuse and stimulus. 8. Expand city brands in terms of the external visibility of local initiatives: Promote organic, social, repairable -with no planned obsolescence-, transparent, open and free source product seals. 9. Making sure investments in major technological events contribute to promoting local commons: Promoting conferences and major events in cities to give visibility and support to the collaborative commons economy, ensuring the promotion of open technology and local commons experiences. 10. Encourage and support the research and understanding of this phenomenon in order to move forward: Provide open access to public data on economic and social aspects, entrepreneurship, support actions, results, etc. (always respecting privacy regulations). * Quina tecnologia? * Política tecnològica: donar suport a tecnologies lliures i descentralitzades. 8. Ampliar el segell Barcelona en clau de visibilitat exterior de les iniciatives locals: promoure segells de producte ecològics, socials, sense obsolescència programada, reparables, transparents i de codi obert i lliure. 9. <http://www.procomuns.net>www.procomuns.net<http://www.procomuns.net> Contact: info(a)dimmons.net<mailto:[email protected]> -- «·´`·.(*·.¸(`·.¸ ¸.·´)¸.·*).·´`·» «·´¨*·¸¸« Mayo Fuster Morell ».¸.·*¨`·» @Lilaroja «·´`·.(¸.·´(¸.·* *·.¸)`·.¸).·´`·» Faculty Affiliated. hi, Please find below our exchange with Denisa Kera on working towards including JoPP in the ERIH database. maxigas > From: Denisa Kera <denisa.kera(a)gmail.com> > Date: Fri, 06 May 2016 12:11:48 +0000 > Subject: Re: Journal of Peer Prudction on ERIH? > To: maxigas <maxigas(a)anargeek.net> > Going to the airport, but the base line is that when you apply for jobs, > tenure, evaluation etc you will run into a problem... change of release dates
by Johan Söderberg 07 May '16

07 May '16

Hi everyone, As you know, the official release dates for JoPP issues are January and July. Many times the actual dates when issues have been release have been a month or two off the target dates. As the actual release schedule have been further skewed from the official one, we propose from the editorial board's side to adjust the official release dates accordingly, to March and September instead. The chief argument for such a shift is that July is in the middle of the academic summer break on the northern hemisphere (and January likewise on the southern), thus it does not help for getting exposure when new issues are released. We want to air this proposal for a general discussion, if anyone has a strong opinion against? Johan Söderberg

Journal of Peer Production #8, “Feminism and (Un)Hacking”
by Mathieu ONeil 02 May '16

02 May '16

Hi everyone JoPP #8 is out. Congratulations to the editors for a really great issue (and a thousand apologies for the delay in publishing). Thanks to Peter for his work on resuscitating and improving the site (signals and metadata now available on every peer reviewed article page). I see that Lilly has posted a short statement to AIR but have not seen anything anywhere else (including here). So unless otherwise advised I am planning to post the following to CITAMS; Fibreculture; ACS; and ICS. Others could post elsewhere. @SSL: please let me know asap if this is OK. cheers Mathieu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= We are delighted to announce the publication of the Journal of Peer Production #8, “Feminism and (Un)Hacking” The issue is available here: http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-8-feminism-and-unhacking/ >From the Introduction, "Feminist Hacking/Making: Exploring New Gender Horizons of Possibility" by SSL Nagbot (a.k.a Lilly Nguyen, Sophie Toupin, and Shaowen Bardzell) This special issue of the Journal of Peer Production shows a growing body of work that brings together feminism with hacking and making. To date, feminist thinking has been taken up by hacking and making researchers to reveal the gendering of techno-labor, to facilitate emancipatory efforts, to cultivate alternative perspectives, and to make visible the infrastructural relations of technology. This combination of visualization with emancipatory alterity demonstrates the ways that feminism in hacking is largely based on a politics of visibility; that is, hacking and making serve the broader objectives of bringing to light the invisible infra/structures of power that render technological achievement possible. In this special issue, we see that the extant forms of feminist research and practice critique gendered forms of marginalization in hacking and making in several ways. First, many feminist hackers and makers seek to redress the lack of gender diversity within these techno-communities through the designs of women, queer, and trans-friendly spaces for hacking and making or addressing women-centered concerns such as improving breast-pumps for nursing. Second, we also see that hacking and making comprise both a method and a framework to introduce new kinds of expertise, such as craft and care, into conversations of information technology. These configurations of hacking and making as a method and framework depart from the strict focus on technology associated with the masculinity of hacking. Instead, we find that the feminist inquiry and interventions within the essays in this special issue alter the very notions of hacking and making and thus introduce alternate values of inclusion and intimacy. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= or - short version >From the Introduction, "Feminist Hacking/Making: Exploring New Gender Horizons of Possibility" by SSL Nagbot In this special issue, we see that the extant forms of feminist research and practice critique gendered forms of marginalization in hacking and making in several ways.
