Dear all, please let me inform you of the screening of excerpts of Nelkengasse, my documentary film on the flight of Heinz Moldau and his family from Vienna in 1938, https://www.kanonmedia.com/nelkengasse/ by the Museum of London, in the framework of the upcoming exhibition Fashion City. How Jewish Londoners shaped global style [October 13, 2023 – April 14, 2024]: https://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/museum-london-docklands/whats-on/exhibiti…: "For the first time, this exhibition will uncover the major contribution of Jewish designers in making London an iconic fashion city. Discover the stories behind the Jewish fashion makers who became leaders in their industries, founded retail chains still on the high street today, and dressed the rich and famous […]“. If you are in the area, happy if you come and visit! I will be in London from October 10-16, do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in further information – :-) – for contact details please see below. — The film Nelkengasse is the portrait of Heinz Moldau who lived with his Jewish family in Vienna. His father ran a reputated leather goods factory in the 7th district of Vienna. In the interviews Heinz Moldau talks about his childhood and youth in Vienna, about the factory – which was aryanized; he reports how the family got threatened by the National Socialists, and how the family fled and built a new life in Great Britain. After his work life he retreated on an island north of the Scottish mainland where he lived for more than 20 years. In Vienna 1938-1945, the buildings No 4 and 6, Nelkengasse represent a particularly tragic location in the 6th district. In these houses, many so-called Sammelwohnungen were installed – group flats where Jewish families lived following evictions from their homes. From here, 31 people were deported to concentration camps and murdered there. This film tells the story of the Moldau family and features interviews with Heinz Moldau, only 16 when he fled Vienna.
